THE SNIPERBY:LIAM O’FLAHERTY
In 'The Sniper'; Liam O' Flaherty suggest the horror of war not only by presenting its physical dangers but also by showing its psychological effects. The story takes place in Dublin around the beleaguered Four Courts in the middle of the city where gunfire of heavy guns, machine guns, and rifles break the silence around the sniper because of a civil war that is especially dangerous because the enemy looked similar to yourself
The Sniper• the sniper is the main character in the
story . He is the member of the republican army. The Sniper has been positioned atop the roof in Dublin .. , picking off people as he chooses. He seems calm at times, but he is also tired of the killing.
• Eventually, another sniper, an enemy, discovers his hiding place when the first sniper has shot at an old woman who was giving away his hiding place.
The first sniper is able to trick the second sniper into thinking he has been shot. When the second sniper stands up on the roof of the house across the way, the first sniper takes aim and kills him.
The first sniper jumps off the roof and his curiosity wins. He goes over to the dead sniper and when he turns him over, he realizes he has shot his own brother.
THE ENEMY SNIPERA member of the Free State army The Enemy Sniper wants to kill the Sniper. He appears to have the advantage after shooting and injuring the Sniper. He makes a fatal error, however, when he falls for the Sniper's ruse. Once he thinks he has killed the other man, the Enemy Sniper stands up on his rooftop, thus making himself a clear mark. The Sniper shoots him, and he falls to the street below,
THE GENREThe genre of “The Sniper”
Is fiction. it is one of Liam ö’ Flaherty’s first works of fiction.
The resolution of the Sniper is also the climax because the Sniper ends up out of trouble for the time being and finds that the enemy sniper is in fact his brother.
The PlotThe plot of the short story, "The Sniper" deals with the clash between two opposing groups in Ireland: the Republicans and the Free States. It is a civil strife, set in 1922.
THE THEMESWar reduces human beings to mere objects. They have no names, no faces. They are targets, nothing more, to be shot at from a distance. To support this theme,
Liam o’ Flaherty refrains from naming any of his characters.
THE POINT OF VIEW
"The Sniper" in limited third-person point of view, in which he presents the thoughts of the IRA sniper but does not present the thoughts of any other character
