Commander Commander’s Corner
Legionnaires:
Wow, what an exciting time this summer has been for Post
160. New changes abound at the Post. I sense a renewed spir-
it of enthusiasm and love for the Post from all Legion Family
members.
The "State of the Legion" is ... better. Not yet well, but defi-
nitely better.
Let me start this column by saying how proud I am of our Le-
gion Family. Everyone has stepped up and helped. The dona-
tions made at the August General Membership meeting far
exceeded expectations. The following weekend we had the
Variety Benefit Show fund raiser in the Lounge, and the reve-
nue again far exceeded expectations. The Post also received
individual donations from many members and friends, and this
continues.
Thank you to everyone who helped us! This includes members
of all our Legion Family.
I must give a special "shout out" to Sandra and John Keating
for the Variety Show Benefit fund raiser event in mid-August.
When they came to me with the idea, I put the full responsibil-
ity on them to plan, organize and conduct the event. What
they did was simply amazing! Everyone in attendance had
fun, the performers were excellent, the food was very good,
and the camaraderie was great.
They are a wonderful example of selfless service to the Post.
They love the Post, they love Veterans, and they are called to
serve. How cool is that? Answer - very cool. Please thank
them when you have the chance.
Many members of all the Legion Family organizations have
found it in their hearts to donate to the Post. We are blessed
with many donations of food, beverages, supplies of paper
goods and plastic utensils, oven mitts for the kitchen, and I
could go on and on. These donations have made all the differ-
ence in the world to us. Again, thank you!
I wish I could name everyone who donated money, food, bev-
erages, supplies, and time to the Post. That simply is not pos-
sible.
I also must mention the donations of funds to pay for our fa-
vorite KJ in the Lounge, Regis "Reggie" Davis. After the Post
no longer had the funds available to pay for his services, many
individual members stepped forward, by themselves or as part
of a group, to fund his performances. We are blessed with
members who are generous and who love the Post. Once
again, all I can say is thank you!
I want to remove the burden on
these individual members to fund
the Lounge entertainment. What
is enjoyed by all should be paid
for by all. That is the fair thing to
do.
Starting Friday night before Labor Day, September 1st, the
Post is implementing a $5 cover charge for the Lounge. At
approximately 7 PM (1900 hours), customers in the Lounge
will be asked to pay the $5 charge or close their tab and leave.
All new customers will be required to pay the cover charge.
Funds collected from the cover charge will be used to fund the
entertainment for the following weekend. Any excess funds
will go to the Post General Fund.
In other news, I have formed an Entertainment Committee. It
will be chaired by Executive Committee member Ed Brown-
lee. Junior Vice Commander - Lounge John Copeland will
serve as a member. Other members will be selected by the
Chair.
I have tasked the new Entertainment Committee with assisting
the Junior Vice Commander - Lounge with planning and
scheduling appropriate entertainment options. Also for fund-
ing such entertainment via a cover charge or other means.
They are also tasked with planning, organizing and conducting
entertainment fund raiser events for the Post.
For the Post to remain viable we must have a good fund rais-
ing event every 6-8 weeks or so. Planning is just commencing
for an event in October...stay tuned for news about it.
Based on the outpouring of support from the membership, I
have decided to keep the Lounge open. Your patronage will
be the most important factor in keeping it open.
Revised beverage prices are in place, and the hope is that we
can operate on funds generated through sales. A new food
menu is in place and again the hope is that the items will sell
and generate revenue for the Lounge.
Italian Night on Wednesday nights is still in effect, and it is
very popular. The "Picking and Grining" crew entertains and
is a lot of fun. Two weeks ago we began Taco Night on
Thursday nights, and it is growing in popularity. SAL mem-
ber Harold Leverette delights everyone with his "oldies" col-
lection of tunes. Please come these two nights and enjoy the
evenings at the Post with your friends.

We hope to introduce new food specials on Friday and Satur-
day nights. Please share your suggestions with John
Copeland.
Speaking of John Copeland, in early August the Junior Vice
Commander - Lounge resigned. We thank Eugene Wear for
his contributions and willingness to help. Faced with a sudden
vacancy, Sergeant At Arms Copeland immediately stepped
forward to volunteer. Thank you John! He was confirmed in
office at the August General Membership meeting.
In his place as Sergeant At Arms, member Dennis Dumas of-
fered his services to the Board. Thank you Dennis!
Another critical Post Board vacancy took place with the resig-
nation of the Finance Officer, effective September 1st. We
thank Sarah Parker for her contributions and hard work, and
wish her well. Another Post member, Ray Metts, has agreed
to step forward and fill this vacancy. Member Frank McLeod
has offered to assist him as he is able. Thank you Ray and
Frank!
These last 2 Board position changes will be on the Agenda for
approval at the September General Membership meeting.
Your Board still has 3 open positions that need someone to
step forward and take over. First is the Senior Vice Com-
mander, responsible for membership recruiting and retention.
Next is the Historian. There is also one Executive Committee
Position open. If you heart calls you to serve and help the
Post in this way, please contact me.
Don't forget the Labor Day BBQ on Monday, September 4th.
Information is found elsewhere in the newsletter. I hope to
see you at the Post that day.
There are several interesting events being worked on for the
month of September. More information will be announced
once the details are firm.
Regarding Post finances...as I said at the beginning of this
message, things are "better." Looking back, June and the
months before it were awful. In July the Post was barely in
the red ink. The changes being implemented were taking good
effect. At this writing the August financial numbers are not
complete or prepared. I expect to report at the September
meeting that the Post was well into black ink for the month of
August (meaning we made money).
Having said that, remember what it took to get us there. It
took a renewed dedication from the members of the entire Post
160 Legion Family. It took sacrifice, dedication, volunteer-
ism, and a willingness to do what was in the best interests of
saving the Post and helping Veterans. We must not fall back
into the old ways or the bad financial results will resume.
To borrow a phrase I used at the August meeting, at that time
the proverbial wolf was at the door. Not just at the door, he
was clawing and scratching and about to force his way inside.
Today, through your actions and help, the wolf has been driv-
en back into the tree line. The wolf is still there, watching and
waiting, so we must remain vigilant - meaning we must all
continue to do the things that drove the wolf away.
I am blessed to be associated with everyone at Post 160, in
every Legion Family organization. Thank you for giving me
your support and confidence. I am working hard to not let you
down. It is an honor for me to serve you.
For God and Country,
Wade Lnenicka [email protected]

Chaplain
Dear Florence! And Jerry!
“To you it is glorious history now You know
where, when and how we hit. I mean the Invasion,
of course.”
“To me, now, it is still a dreaded ominous suspense.
Sort of like waiting in the ante-room of a dentist -
only much worse!”
“The last mail in or out is over with for an unde-
termined period. We have all written our mothers,
wives, or sweethearts our last letter for a quite a
while – or forever. It was, of course, happy-go-
lucky and carefree so as to not worry them or let
them suspect our mission. A GI worries more about
his folks worrying than he does about himself.”
We are reading a letter written 1 June 1944, by
Corporal William “Bicky”Kiesssel, to two college
friends right before D-Day on the shores of France.
It offers a revealing glimpse into the thoughts and
emotions of a young man about to go into harms’
way. Bicky had survived the invasion of Italy and
he knew he was “pushing the odds.” The letter is
taken from Andrew Carroll’s book, “Grace under
Fire.” The letter continues…….
“We’ve separated from most of our friends. Noth-
ing dramatic in parting but a casual “see yuh soon”
or a careless “take care of yourself, fella.” But we
both feel the sincerity of it and respect each other’s
“meet again” attitude. To a great extent, unfortu-
nately, we have lost our sensitiveness; there is a
cold calculating air. We have gone through and ex-
perienced what men should not. But at times like
these we are mother’s sons once more.”
“I don’t pray, nor do I want others, to pray for my
safety or return. That is not of prime importance.
In life we too often emphasize the wrong things.
We don’t put first things first. We become satisfied
with the good and don’t press on to the best values
in life. No, safety isn’t the ultimate goal. But true
exemplary conduct is. What is important is that
whatever does happen to me I will play my part as a
man and do absolutely nothing that will shame my
character or my God. To me the supreme words,
the finest and highest commendation in the whole
wide world is, “Well done thou good and faithful
servant. Thou hast fought the good fight, thou hast
kept the faith. Enter thou into the Kingdom of
Heaven.”
“Sorry if I seem to be getting dramatic. Don’t
mean to. I fully expect with God’s Holy Will that I
shall come through. I wanted you to know my reac-
tions preceding this greatest of all invasions. Let’s
hope and pray that the lives lost will be worth it; as
if any price can pay for a life. I want to get home;
we all want to go home and though it will mean
never for some, for most this will mean a much
closer path through time to those whom we love and
love us so dearly.”
Corporal Kiessel survived the war. We all can
learn so much from those that, thru circumstances,
have faced with harsh reality, their own mortality.

Queen of Hearts
Drawings on Wednesdays
@ 7 PM All members of the American Legion Family
(AL, ALA, SAL, ALR) from any legion post, as a
member in good standing with a valid member-
ship card, will be eligible to play. Guests who are
signed in by members are not eligible to play.
Tickets are $2.00 each with no limit on the number
of tickets purchased. Tickets may be purchased
immediately after the weekly drawing and up until
the next drawing.
All tickets sold are single stub tickets. You must
legibly print your name and telephone number on
the back of each ticket. There can be only one
name per ticket. Once your name is on the ticket,
return it to the Bartender or person running the
Queen of Hearts for that drawing, to be placed in
the raffle drum.
If you will not be present for the drawing, you
also need to designate a card (envelope) number
from 1through 54 to be turned if your entry is
picked. If you would like to donate your winnings,
you can use any reference to Post 160 organizations
(i.e. Post 160, ALA 160, SAL 160, or future Riders
160). If you are not present, and have not designat-
ed a card (envelope) number to be turned, a card
chosen at random will be turned.
The Queen of Hearts drawing will occur every
Wednesday at 7 PM. The draw will be from the
tickets purchased since the last drawing. Tickets
will be drawn by the bartender, a member of the
Post 160 Executive Committee, or a designee of the
Staff.
If a ticket is drawn with no name on it, it will count
as the allowed draw for that session. If you show
up at 7:01 PM, and your name was called 3 times,
you will be considered not present. Being consid-
ered not present it will have an effect, per on the
payout. Drawings will not be held on any Wednes-
day that fall on a National Holiday (e.g. Christmas)
and / or whenever the Social Quarters are closed.
THE CLUBROOM CLOCK IS THE OFFICIAL
CLOCK.
If your name is drawn, you
will have the opportunity to
search for the Queen of
Hearts on the game board.
You will select a card (en-
velope) from the game
board noted on the back of
your card or open at ran-
dom. If the card chosen is
the Queen of Hearts, the
winner, if present, will re-
ceive fifty percent (50%)
of the jackpot. Of the remaining fifty percent
(50%), thirty percent (30%) goes back to the jack-
pot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs at
the Post, and ten percent (10%) goes to the Post 160
General Fund. If the winner is not present, the
winner will receive twenty-five percent (25%) of
the jackpot. Of the remaining seventy-five percent
(75%), fifty-five percent (55%) goes back to the
jackpot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs
at the Post, and ten percent (10%) goes to the Post
160 General Fund.
Additional prizes will be awarded as follows, but
only for players who are considered Present for the
Drawing: JOKER – $ 50.00; ACE OR ANY FACE
CARD – $ 25.00; ALL OTHER CARDS – $ 5.00
Each card selected and turned will have the winning
ticket attached and that card will remain on the
board. Once the “Queen of Hearts” is selected, the
board will no longer be in play and will be placed in
storage, with the attached winning tickets for a pe-
riod of three years. A new board will be placed in
play. Once a card is selected, it will be removed
from play. This will be done by placing the card
face up on the board. Each week, after the drawing,
all non-winning tickets will be destroyed.
All winners are responsible for payment of any and
all taxes. Prizes over $600.00 will be paid by check
and the winner will be issued a W2-G (1099). NO
prize over $600.00 will be paid until the W2-G
(1099) information is completely filled out. If a
winner is unwilling to fill out a W2-G (1099), the
prize will revert back to Post 160.

President Trump Signs Bill for
Veterans at American Legion
Conference in Reno
VA secretary, David J. Shulkin, detailed the new
bill streamlining disability claims.
President Trump signed what he called a “historic
bill” for veterans on stage during the American Le-
gion’s national convention in Nevada on Wednes-
day, 8/23/17.
“No longer will veterans be kept waiting for years
to get an answer to their appeals,” Trump said in
Reno. “They will receive timely updates and they
will get decisions much more quickly in a fraction
of the time.”
The legislation signed by Trump – H.R.2288 - Vet-
erans Appeals Improvement and Modernization
Act of 2017 - streamlines the process of veterans
appealing claims over disability benefits.
More than 470,000 veterans are in limbo as they
wait for a decision on their benefits.
Trump noted during his speech that the Ameri-
can Legion “pressed so hard for that legislation”
and said, “they have a lot of power, a lot of pow-
er, and they use it well.”
During his speech, the president also referenced his
decision, announced earlier this week, to send more
troops to Afghanistan – a reversal of his campaign
promise to withdraw troops that follows months of
deliberations with advisers.
“We will pursue an honorable and enduring out-
come in Afghanistan worthy of the tremendous sac-
rifice our troops have already made,” the president
said. “We will give our men and women in uniform
the tools they need, and the trust they have earned,
to fight and to win.”
