VC winner’s heroism tobe honoured by statueA STATUE to mark 100years since a First WorldWar soldier earned the Vic-toria Cross will be unveiledthis Saturday, October 27.This follows a £100,000fundraising effort launchedby the Newton and Earles-town Community Group in2016 to create a memorial toVC recipient Private Nor-man Harvey at Newton-le-Willows’ Mesnes Park.Norman was 19 when hehis actions on October 25,1918 in Ingoyhem, Belgiumearned him the honour.Despite his age, when Nor-man’s battalion was held upand suffering severe casual-ties from machine-gun fire,he ran forward and engagedthe enemy single-handed,killing two, wounding oneand capturing 12 men andtwo guns.He later used a hiddenma-chine-gun to put the enemyto flight. When night fell,he went out alone and gath-ered important informa-

tion. Throughout these ac-tions, Norman was limpingas he had a sprained ankle.The two-metre high stat-ue, capturing the momentjust after the action thatwon him the honour, will beunveiled at Mesnes Park’sremembrance meadow at3.45pm.
