Workshop no.25:

Fast/Slow Organic Geometrics:

Create Stunning Geometric

Digital Textile Patterns from

Organic Structures and Traditional

Techniques

Attend in person2pm til 5.30pm May 19th 2012

(code W25) from £40.

All materials and refreshments included.

Learn from the twentieth century master of observational and deconstructivist painting, Piet Mondrian (1872 - 1944), and develop your own library of organic images inspired by nature.

In class, we practise thinking about looking and new ways to do so and, together, we practise observational painting and deconstructivist mark-making.

We upload these paintings and marks and transform them into digital patterns and

compositions for digital printing, silkscreen-printing, 3D printing, lazer-etching, routing, translating into appliqué and embroidery

and or making into movies (which you can try out at the

Nov 3rd 2012 workshop, Transform Textiles into Short Films (code

W27)).

This workshop offers you the chance to practise new techniques in a guided way

with tasks laid out over the afternoon.

You practise techniques that can be used in a variety of ways and get you thinking about

the marks you make and why.

The afternoon’s work leaves you with a large body of work to refer to later and develop in a variety of interesting ways.

Guidance on digital printing, silkscreen-printing, 3D printing, lazer etching, routing, is also given to prepare you for the next

creative stage, should you so desire!

Hands-onWorkshop no.26:

Pop Art Geometrics:

Translate Pop Art Geometrics into Stunning Digital Repeat Patterns

(code W26)

Attend in person2pm til 5.30pm on

July 14th 2012 (code W26)

from £40.

All materials and refreshments included.

You can see all the

Taking inspiration from Pop Art geometrics, from Victor Vasarely (1906 - 1997) to Sol Le Witt (1928 - 2007), learn to go beyond the purely deco-rative and use geometric form as a receptacle for thought, structure and internal dynamics.

Experiment with outline, fill and colours – both in paint and in Adobe Illustrator.

Make digital outlines that can then be experimented with for further digital development and colour experiments, printing, lazer etching, 3D printing and or making into geometric animations (ready for class on Nov 3rd 2012, see below)!

This workshop offers you the chance to practise new techniques in a tutored

space with tasks laid out over the afternoon.

You’ll practice techniques that can be useful in a variety of ways and get you

thinking about line, form, geometry, symmetry, pattern and effect.

The afternoon’s work leaves you with a significant body of work to refer to later

and develop in a variety of interesting ways; for instance, lazer etching wool,

routing acrylic, 3D printing nylon, templates for appliqué and more!

We show you how.

If you are enrolled on the Slow Design School Programme, the class also offers an experiential introduction to working with geometrics and an opportunity to

start some research and potentially publish a paper in tandem with the

Slow Textiles Group’s The Geometrics exhibition.

Learn to transform any pattern or motif into animated sequences for dynamic digital film.

Learn to move motifs, distort them and create colour change, shape, symmetry and composition over a timeline.

Film offers a powerful com-munication tool for express-ing your 2D vision kinetically and online.

This process allows a narra-tive in otherwise static and semi-static surfaces and also brings to light the role of story-telling (both conscious and unconscious) in the creation of cloth, pattern, form and composition.

As New York Times journalist, Cathy Horyn, wrote on July 4th 2011,

“All sorts of weird vibes...have a way of surfacing in

clothes. A runway is like a shrink’s couch;

stuff just comes out.”

If you have a narrative to share, film can bring your

design story to life in a way that communicates

culturally to millions of people online.

This might be important to you for all different reasons;

for instance, it may serve to create an international

Textiles in Film online community representing a

new genre, new field applications, research and

opportunity for cultural exchange.
