Whoever you are, wherever you come from, whatever joys or burdens you carry, you are welcome at Calvary Episcopal Church. And we are honored that you’ve chosen to say your prayers with us.

Calvary is an eclectic bunch of Christian people. We don’t all think the same thoughts, or dress the same way, or vote for the same candidates, or even believe all the same things about the mystery of God and what it means to be human. But, with St. Paul, we believe we need each other because of our differences, not in spite of them. God calls us out of estrangement into unity, not uniformity. A body made up of identical members can’t do much work in the world. Thumbs are so much more useful with fingers to push against, are they not?

So, I invite you to join in the life of this congregation with all that you are, in all your splendid uniqueness, maybe just for today, but maybe for the rest of your days. We are a fuller expression of Christ’s body because of your presence. And has our world ever been more needful of Christ’s reconciling, loving, and merciful body than now?

The Rev. Scott Walters Rector

I invite you to join in the life of this congregation with all that you are, in all your splendid uniqueness, maybe just for today, but maybe for the rest of your days.

Welcome to Calvary

PSALM 105:1-6, 37-45, standing, chanted by cantors Tone II/

1 Give thanks to the LORD and call upon his / Name; * make known his deeds a/mong the peoples.2 Sing to him, sing praises to / him, * and speak of all his / marvelous works.3 Glory in his holy / Name; * let the hearts of those who seek the / LORD rejoice.4 Search for the LORD and his / strength; * continually / seek his face.5 Remember the marvels he has / done, * his wonders and the judgments / of his mouth,6 O offspring of Abraham his / servant, * O children of Ja/cob his chosen.37 He led out his people with silver and / gold; * in all their tribes there was not / one that stumbled.38 Egypt was glad of their / going, * because they were a/fraid of them.39 He spread out a cloud for a / covering * and a fire to give light / in the night season.40 They asked, and quails ap/peared, * and he satisfied them with / bread from heaven.41 He opened the rock, and / water flowed, * so the river ran in / the dry places.42. For God remembered his / holy word * and Abra/ham his servant.43 So he led forth his people with / gladness, * his chosen with / shouts of joy.44 He gave his people the lands of the / nations, * and they took the fruit of / others’ toil,45 That they might keep his / statutes * and observe his laws. / Hallelujah!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy / Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be fore/ver. Amen.

THE LESSONS

THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 16:2-15 The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your complaining against the LORD. For what are we, that you complain against us?” And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening

Page 6: The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 20, 2020 10 ...calvarymemphis.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/...Let go of distractions and let the silence and music be gifts as we create

6

and your fill of bread in the morning, because the LORD has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the LORD.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the LORD, for he has heard your complaining.’“ And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. The LORD spoke to Moses and said, “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’“

In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.”

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

CANTICLE 9, The First Song of Isaiah: Ecce, Deus, read in unison, standing BCP p. 86Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and he will be my Savior. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;Make his deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his Name is exalted.Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, * and this is known in all the world.Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The people sit.

THE SECOND LESSON Philippians 1:21-30 To me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well—since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

THE THIRD LESSON Matthew 20:1-16 Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will be alway praising thee. The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper thou the work of our hands upon us. Clergy and Eucharistic Ministers will sanitize their hands immediately prior to consecrating and before distributing Eucharist. Only bread will be offered at this time. Reserve your spot at calvarymemphis.org/connect and click on the Sign Up for In-Person Worship button. We hope to see you there! Morning Prayer will continue to be offered at Calvary at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

Early Morning PrayerEarly morning prayer is offered live on Calvary’s Facebook page each day at 6:30 a.m. This prayer service is modeled on Daily Devotions (p. 137 in the Book of Common Prayer) and lasts about 10-15 minutes. All early risers (by preference or necessity!) are invited to come pray together.

Morning PrayerThe Calvary clergy lead weekday Morning Prayer, which is live-streamed on Calvary’s Facebook page Mondays through Fridays at 8 a.m.

Wednesday Noonday PrayerNoonday Prayer is offered in-person in the Calvary chancel on Wednesdays and features a reflection by one of our priests. The church doors open at 11:45 and close at noon. It is not necessary to make a reservation. Distancing protocols are the same as for Sunday morning worship:

• Parishioners attending worship services in-person will be seated at least six feet from other households.

• All attendees will be asked to wear masks (one will be provided if you do not have one). • Parishioners also will be asked to review the COVID-19 symptoms and to stay home if they have

experienced any of the symptoms in the previous 24 hours or if they have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19.

Evensong“Choral Evensong is a 45-min long peace-inducing church service in which the ‘song’ of voices sounding together in harmony is heard at the ‘even’ point between the active day and restful night, allowing listeners time for restful contemplation–church members, agnostics and atheists alike.” (from choralevensong.org)Calvary’s next Evensong is Oct. 4. In this extraordinary time, Calvary is still offering services with music. Now, more than ever, an opportunity to lean on our faith in word and the beauty of music is essential. You may join us in person by registering; only one spot needs to be reserved per household. Reserve your spot at calvarymemphis.org/connect and click on the Sign Up for In-Person Worship button. We will also live stream the service on the Calvary Episcopal Church Facebook page and the Calvary website.

Compline

The Calvary staff lead weekday Compline, a simple service of evening prayers which is live-streamed on Calvary’s Facebook page Mondays through Fridays at 8 p.m. The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning ‘completion’ (completorium). It is above all a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day.

FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES

NEW Gleanings Formation ClassBeginning Sept. 30, Scott Walters’s “Gleanings” class is moving to Wednesdays for a study of Francis Spufford’s “Unapologetic: Why, Despite Everything, Christianity Can Still Make Surprising Emotional Sense.” The book set out to be a defense of the Christian faith in the face of the so-called “New Atheists.” But many Christians have found in it a fresh and compelling description of why the Christian faith can still be so life-giving and sustaining to people like us in a world like ours. The book can be ordered at novel., or wherever you buy books. We will discuss a chapter a week, about 25 pages. Voracity not required. Just an open heart and a willingness to engage truthfully and lovingly with others on Zoom. Contact Scott Walters to sign up: [email protected].

Children and Youth: Hit the Road Passport BookFrom 5:15-6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, children and youth will be able to get their “Hit the Road” passport booklets stamped and pick up materials for the following week’s lesson. This is your chance to get out there and find God in new ways in the world. Every week, you’ll find different activities. You can do as many as you want and each one completed earns you a stamp. In order to understand the activities, you’ll have to read the two passages of Scripture first. Then dive in! There’s no wrong way to Hit the Road!

Wednesday Evening Yoga at Calvary via Zoom: 5:30-6:30 p.m.Thanks to Calvary teaming up with Yo Clark (via Zoom!), we can once again practice yoga together. Classes are for all levels including beginners and taught by one of the best. Yo, a well-loved yogi in Memphis, is the owner of Any Body Yoga Studio: Where Everybody Is Somebody. She is known for her intelligent instruction combined with a sense of humor, and for her rare ability to create both a sense of community and a true, deep welcome to newcomers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and fitness levels. New to yoga? You can buy a mat at Target or just use a large towel or folded blanket. Find a quiet space at home to get settled in before class starts and maybe have a chair, table, or wall nearby for balance. Join the Zoom meeting a few minutes before class starts and from there you can just follow Yo’s directions. Be ready for some zen and some friends and a teacher who makes it easy for all of us to laugh at ourselves while we try something new! Classes are free but you’ll need to sign up with Ardelle Walters, [email protected], to get the Zoom link.

Our City, Our StoryMIFA is committed to convening key stakeholders to promote discussions of the issues that challenge our city. This year’s Our City, Our Story will build on last year’s conversation about homelessness to educate and engage our community around this important issue that affects so many of our neighbors. MIFA is delighted to welcome Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, for a virtual event on Oct. 7, to broaden our community conversation about housing inequality. Visit community.mifa.org/ourcityourstory for more information.
