SummaryThe eighth chapter of The Siege gives an idea of the hard work, the loss of time and

priorities of the war. The chapter starts with Anna finding herself digging out anti-tanwith Evgenia and the others, realising the hard work and the pain brought by the expefinding herself unnerved by the shelling over Leningrad. She finds herself in a strangenvironment of the war. At this point, the curiosity of the well being of Kolya makes hreasons for joining the war. This leads to a flashback of the period during which, Maridacha and requests to spend a few nights in Annas house until she could live at her frWhile her stay, Marina tries hard to make Anna accept her as a part of the family. Thisleads to her ending conversations with a reference to Annas mother. As days pass by,unable to move to her friends house as their children havent been evacuated. The effMarina to change her image on Annas mind is clearly portrayed in this chapter. Evenleaves Kolya behind, in the hands of Marina, to join the war. The atmosphere of the stswitches back to the defence lines in which Anna is situated. The loss of time is carefuwithin the last few paragraphs of the chapter with characters like Katinka, who dies antime to bury her and Raisa Fyodorovna.

-Marina Petrovna She is described to be a caring figure, who comes to live with Ain taking care of Kolya when Anna joins the war.

-Evgenia Said to be the leader of the girls. She tries her best to lead the girls to digtrenches.
