This year, the evening was again held at the St Kilda Town Hall, and attended by over 250 guests, including the Italian Consul General Dr Marco Mattacotta-Cordella, the Director of the Italian Institute of Culture Dr Carmela Panetta, Federal members of Parliament Mr Michael Danby and Mr Josh Frydenberg, members of State Parliament, and other distinguished guests. The evening was an opportunity to yet again highlight all things Sicilian: the Sicilian style food, prepared by chef Michele Usci, Sicilian wine from the region of Trapani, a photographic display showing sights of Sicily was projected during the evening, and the art of Marcello D’Amico was on display. The evening included some traditional Sicilian music, and the highlight of the evening were the performances by the Australian Young Opera singers, who enchanted the guests with their voices, performing amongst the tables, giving all present ‘the best seats in the house’. The band ‘Envy’ ensured that there was plenty of opportunity to dance the night away, which many people did. The committee thanks all present for their support and looks forward to that support continuing for future events. On Sunday 2nd of June the TSAA hosted the screening of a wonderful and moving documentary at the University of Melbourne Law building.

The documentary, titled Lo Sbarco Alleato in Sicilia 1942, gave a detailed account of the Allied landing in Sicily, which was a major turning point of World War 2. American, British and Canadian forces landed in Sicily in the Summer of 1942 in order to secure the island as a strategic point in the allied counter-attack against the German forces occupying Europe.

The local population were, in general, very welcoming, seeing the allied forces as a liberating army and not an invading one. The documentary showed the slow but steady progress from the south of the island towards the straight of Messina. Although quite moving, the drama of the bombardments and destruction was at times interlaced with some light relief, such as the staged scene of an American soldier of Sicilian origin being embraced by his father's elderly aunt. The documentary was followed by a brilliant dissertation by Dr Mark Nicholls, a senior lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Melbourne and an expert in Italian cinema.

The audience of about 140 were then given the opportunity to comment and reminisce on stories handed down from parents and grandparents who had been eye-witnesses to the remarkable events described in the documentary.

The screening was followed by light refreshments and, no doubt, further animated discussion.

The Sicilian Association of Australia (TSAA) held its third annual “Vesperi Siciliani” dinner and lecture at Mezzo Bar and Grill Little Bourke Street Melbourne on the 27th March 2013. The dinner celebrates the Sicilian uprising against French ruling on Easter Monday, March 30, 1282, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, on the outskirts of Palermo. A full house of 125 members, family and friends enjoyed traditional Sicilian dishes including prawn and swordfish skewers, macaroni with cauliflower, sultanas, pine nuts and sundried tomatoes as well as Sicilian cassata. The entertainment included a performance from TSAA member Dominic Esposito, an accomplished violinist. The attendees were further entertained by a humorous performance by TSAA President, Massimo Petterlin (speaking in Sicilian) and Mr. Michael Bula (speaking in French), who demon-strated how, contrary to the historical records, the uprising may well have been sparked by a simple mis-understanding caused by people speaking different languages. Members and guests who attended includ-ed the Association’s Patron Supreme Court Justice Tony Pagone and Supreme Court of Appeal Justice Mark Weinberg. Mr. Petterlin commented that the event was a great success and everyone greatly enjoyed the company, food and entertainment.

A Taste of Sicily Wines

Wine review

TSAA held another SWAG evening on 7th August at the Sicilian Res-taurant in Richmond. Thanks to your continued support, the even-ing was again a sellout. On this occasion the wines tasted came from Eagle Range Estate, a small winery from the famed northeast of Victoria. As usual, Giuseppe provided a great meal to compliment the wines we were tasting. TSAA was able to give the evening a different slant, as we were able to arrange for the wine maker, Frank Ivone, to present the wines himself. He spoke with great passion about the wines and the particular aspects of each wine, but also gave us all a unique look into the world of wine making and the aims of a wine maker. He shared his knowledge of cork versus screw top, various blends, the importance of airing a wine and a range of other topics raised by those present. Indeed it was not just a great evening with good food, wine and friends, but an informative con-versation about wine itself enjoyed by all present.A good time was had by all!
