Interesting, carrots in Yiddish is merrin, which means to increase and we therefore beseech Hashem to “to increase our merits”. At first glance this is most difficult. Can we sit back and He will increase our merits? I saw a sharp answer by the Admor Torahs Chaim of Kosov zt’’l, Reish Lakish in Yuma (86b) teaches that Tshuvah is so great, it can transform our willful sins to merits. There is however one condition that we do Tshuvah B’Ahavah , repent with love. Our eating the carrots and it’s accompanying prayer is our fervent desire that we be privileged to repent with love, to our Father who awaits us with love.
