Dear Parents,

The South Charlotte Middle School PTO would like to welcome all students and families to a new and exciting school year! The PTO is an integral part of SCMS and is dedicated to supporting students and their families, teachers, and staff. However, the PTO cannot achieve this without YOUR involvement. There are many ways YOU can contribute to the success of South Charlotte Middle School and your child.

Volunteer! We have many committees that can use your time and talent no matter how great or small. A volunteer sign-up form will be sent home with your student on the first day of school. Please consider volunteering for one or more of these committees.

Contribute Financially! Join the PTO, contribute to the Annual Fund, save your General Mills Box Tops, and link your Harris Teeter VIC Card and Target REDCard. Every dollar makes a difference. Please refer to the fundraising article on page 3 to learn more about how PTO funds were spent last school year.

Stay Connected! Join the “ Parent Email ListServ” and receive the weekly Shockwave with Mrs. Bailes’ weekly message, school announcements and happenings, grade-level news, school information and this PTO quarterly newsletter, The Shocker. Register online at http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Pages/JointheParentEmailListserv.aspx. In addition, the PTO website includes board member contact information, a PTO calendar, SCMS forms, and The Shocker PTO newsletter. You can access the PTO website directly from the SCMS homepage or at http://scmspto.cmswiki.wikispaces.net.

Please be sure to read this newsletter, The Shocker, published four times per year by the PTO. Finally, important infor-mation is also relayed via Connect Ed (automated telephone network). All PTO forms will be sent home with your stu-dent on the first day of school. A detailed description of each form is on page 6. Please return all forms to your child’s homeroom teacher no later than September 16. PTO board members will be available to answer your questions during the 6th grade and new student open houses on August 21 or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your sup-port of the students and staff at SCMS.

6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls. Marc Cantor, tennis pro at Raintree Country Club, will coach the team. Thank you Mr.

Cantor for bringing tennis to SCMS this year!

Student schedules are being adjusted and will soon be finalized. All students will receive a schedule in homeroom on

the first day of school. Teachers will review the schedules, assist students with questions, and provide directions to all

classes.

Of course, to prepare for learning, students should spend time reading and writing this summer. Reading is the key to

writing well, and vice versa. Both are essential skills for success in all other academic areas (including mathematics).

Students should read/write for at least 30 minutes each day.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon! Please be sure to reach out to us if there is an issue that needs resolution or if

you have a question or concern. We will always work together for viable solutions that ensure student success and

well-being. Thank you in advance for allowing us to serve your students.

Kindest Regards,

Lisa Bailes, Principal

The Shocker

Summer 2015 3

South Charlotte Middle School is known for providing a high quality learning environment. With a

rigorous academic program and access to the most current technology and materials, our students

will continue to be successful.

The South Charlotte PTO is committed to maintaining this level of excellence by supporting teachers,

purchasing innovative technology, keeping our Media Center updated, providing funds for continuing

education classes, and beautifying school grounds. Last year, we raised $42,000 that helped fund

these initiatives. In order to continue this support of our teachers and

classrooms, we need your financial help.

As a SCMS family, participation in our Annual Fund campaign is your op-

portunity to provide a one-time, 100% tax-deductible donation that will di-

rectly benefit all students. With that thought in mind, we ask that all fami-

lies make a donation. Large or small, every single dollar counts toward this

year’s $35,000 goal.

Corporate matching gifts will double donations. If your company offers a matching gift program,

please take advantage of their generosity and submit any paperwork necessary for us to secure this

extra funding. You will receive instructions on donating by check or PayPal on the first day of school.

A PayPal link will also be provided on the SCMS PTO website.

Your valuable donation will allow our students and teachers access to technology and materials they

need to continue the strong South Charlotte academic tradition. Thank you for supporting our stu-

dents.

Transportation Q: How will parents know the bus their child needs to take to school? A: Bus stickers will be sent home to every family during the second week in August. The sticker includes:

Child’s Name Address

School Assignment

AM/PM Bus Numbers

Stop Location

Estimated Pickup and Delivery Times Please have your child at the bus stop at least 10 minutes before pickup time.

Q: How can families request alterna-tive bus stops for their child? A: CMS will provide transportation to alternative stop locations, including li-censed daycares and/or relative’s ad-dress, only if the stop is in the child’s at-tending school boundary. Parents may call the school office to determine if their alternative stop is within their school’s boundary. Forms to request an alterna-tive stop are available at every school.

Q: If my child is late arriving home, how can I inquire if his/her bus is late? A: Parents should call 980.343.3670 if their student’s bus is unusually late. Someone is in the office until 4:30 PM. If we have been notified of a late bus, stu-dents will be given the opportunity to call you. Please remember the most efficient routes are generally determined during the first two weeks of school.

Q: Should I drive my child to school during the first week? A: Although bus transportation can be frustrating during the first several days of school, if you registered for a bus stop, your child needs to ride the bus. Other-

wise, your stop might be eliminated for nonuse. Bus routes are refined during the first few weeks of school. Q: If I routinely drive my child to school, what are appropriate arrival and pickup times? A: Students are not allowed in the building before 8:00 AM. School dis-misses at 3:30 PM. Students can re-port to their homerooms beginning at 8:15 AM. Students who are not in their seats and prepared for class by 8:30 AM are considered tardy. Parents are asked to be prompt in collecting their children in the afternoons. Parents who do not routinely pick up their students within 30 minutes of the close of school (4:00 PM) or within 20 minutes of any school-sponsored activ-ity are considered negligent. The ad-ministration will take appropriate ac-tion, if necessary, regarding this issue.

Q: What is the procedure for the car-pool line? A: The carpool line is a two-car flow. Parents are requested to pull up to the crosswalk to let their children disem-bark. Students should NOT leave their cars and walk through waiting automo-biles to get to the sidewalk. Q: What if my child is not waiting for me on the sidewalk? A: Carpool students and students who walk are dismissed before bus stu-dents. It is the student’s responsibility to go directly to their car. Cars without waiting students are asked to circle around to Strawberry Lane and rejoin the carpool line until their child ap-pears.

Q: I noticed that South Charlotte Middle School has an entrance and

an exit. Can I sneak in the exit to wait for my child? A: No. As stated, the carpool line is a two-car flow. Both lanes of the school exit are used for exiting vehicles. Q: Where do I park when I visit or volunteer at the school? A: Please use the parking spac-es facing the school cafeteria and parking spaces 24 – 31. ALL other spaces are for staff parking only. Overflow parking is in the grass near the bus lot.

Curriculum Q: Where can I find the summer reading list? A: The summer reading lists for each grade level can be found on the SCMS website: http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Pages/SummerReading2015.aspx.

Q: Where can I find the grade- level supply lists? A: They, too, can be found on the school website.

Q: Does my child really need a calculator? A: Yes. Q: Was the summer reading re-quired? A: There is one expected book for each grade level. Once school begins, students will participate in an activity based on their book. In order to prepare for grade-level language arts and social studies programs, students are encour-aged to read two additional books from the list.

Page 5: The Shocker - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schoolsschools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Documents... · The South Charlotte Middle School PTO would like to welcome all students and families

Q: Can I change my child’s schedule? A: Scheduling is a very complex pro-cess. With over 850 students, it is impos-sible for every child to receive his/her first choices. However, class changes can be made during the first 10 days of school for academic reasons. Change forms are available in the Guidance Of-fice. All schedule changes must be ap-proved by the Assistant Principal.

Q: How was my child placed in honors' math and language arts? A: The CMS rubric was used as a placement guide for all students.

Q: Is Physical Education (PE) re-quired? A: The State Board of Education re-quires all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to take one semester of PE per year. More PE questions are answered on page 9.

Q: Where can I view homework assigned by my child’s teacher? A: Every teacher has a website. These websites include homework assign-ments.

Communication Q: I understand that the Principal, Mrs. Bailes, sends out a weekly mes-sage to parents about upcoming events. When should we expect to receive this message? A: Mrs. Bailes' weekly message is sent to par-ents each Friday at 6:00 PM via email and phone. Mrs. Bailes also sends a weekly newsletter via email entitled, The Shockwave. Mrs. Bailes encourages all families to sign up to receive this newsletter as her goal is to ensure parents are informed of South Charlotte "happenings" at all times.

Q: How do I sign up for The Shock-wave? A: Go to the website and choose “Join ListServ” on the side tab. Pick the grade you would like to receive information about during the 2015-2016 school year. You will receive a message confirming your addition to the list. We currently do not print The Shockwave, but if you do not have In-ternet access, please let the Front Of-fice know.

Attendance Q: When can I collect my child for early dismissal? A: Students are required to bring a note from their parent notifying the school of the need for an early dismis-sal. These notes are to be taken to the Attendance Office in the morning, and the student is given a dismissal pass. There are NO early dismissals be-tween 3:00 and 3:30 PM. Students will be dismissed at class breaks. Dismissals during scheduled class time will not be allowed unless it is an extreme emergency. Classroom interruptions affect classroom engage-ment and ultimately can negatively af-fect student performance. Please con-tact Mrs. Bailes if you have questions. Dress Code & Book Bags Q: Does South Charlotte Middle School have a dress code? A: Yes. Information regarding the dress code will be sent to parents, and it will be posted on the SCMS website.

Q: Why is my child’s book bag so heavy? A: It is the nature of the middle school child to carry everything for fear of forgetting something. Teachers work to lessen the load in the book bags, but parents are encouraged to follow up at home.

Frequently Asked Questions (continued)

Q: Can my child carry a book bag to class?

A: Yes, students will be issued a

Chromebook and will be allowed to

carry book bags to class. Book

bags must have two straps, and

students are required to have both

straps on their shoulders at all

times. Students will still visit their

lockers, and books can be ex-

changed so that the book bag is as

light as possible throughout the

day. Book bags should have a spe-

cific area for the Chromebook so

that it is not damaged. Chrome-

books have a protective cover, but

a book bag with a specific area for

the Chromebook will ensure there

is no damage.

SCMS Fine Arts Network Supports Students

South Charlotte Middle School (SCMS) offers six Fine Arts programs: Art,

Band, Chorus, Dance, Drama, and Orchestra. Did you know most stu-

dents at SCMS participate in at least one Fine Arts class each year?

That’s almost 1,000 students a year who — novice or seasoned — are

exposed to Fine Arts within our walls. Among those 1,000, many are

picking up a musical instrument, paintbrush, costume, or script for the

first time; many are honing their craft; and, many are advancing to

upper-level competitions. It’s all happening right here, thanks to our

incredible Fine Arts teachers and your support of the Fine Arts Net-

work, also known as FAN.

Your support keeps our Fine Arts Department among the best in the

state. Thanks to your donations, FAN was able to fund all of the follow-

ing (and more) last year:

FAN sent students to district and regional competitions in ALL SIX of the Fine Arts programs!

FAN provided new equipment for all programs including: select instruments for band and or-

chestra, a keyboard for chorus, supplies and glazes for art, iPods for dance and drama. In addi-

tion, FAN maintains all of this equipment and funds repairs as needed.

FAN enabled the Fine Arts teachers to attend professional development workshops.

FAN funded the production of the annual musical, which combines teaching and student talents

from drama, dance and chorus.

FAN purchased all music (band, orchestra, chorus, dance) and plays (drama) along with the

rights to perform them.

FAN funded costumes for dance performances and the musical.

FAN hosted multiple performances for band, orchestra, chorus, and dance.

These are just a few of the many important needs your

FAN donations support. Please consider joining FAN and

helping us continue advancing the arts at SCMS. You will

receive a Membership Form once school begins. We would

love for you to join FAN as a contributor or volunteer! If

contributing, please note that FAN accepts matching cor-

porate contributions too. If you have any questions or

concerns, please contact FAN President Abbe McCracken

at [email protected]. And, remember, all contributions

are tax-deductible! Thank you!

Can you imagine your school without a football team, a cheerleading squad, or pep rallies? Even if your child doesn’t play sports, cheering for their school and their teammates at sporting events fosters a sense of community, camaraderie, and school pride. South Charlotte’s Booster Club, a nonprofit volunteer organization, was established to promote school spirit and provide support to our student ath-letes and coaches. Thanks to the parent support during the 2014-2015 school year, the SCMS Booster Club made stellar accomplishments, including:

Upgraded football equipment

Sponsored the fall, winter, and spring sports banquets

Hosted fall pep rally

Provided programs during football games, highlighted corporate sponsors, and much more!

Our 2014-2015 sports teams were amazing! Congratulations to our softball team who had an undefeated season and were the Southern League Champions! Our membership drive will kick off shortly. All of our students are in need of sup-port, so please consider becoming a member of the Booster Club, regardless of whether or not you have a child in a sport. If you are interested in helping with the Booster Club or being a corporate sponsor, please contact Jeff Sprenger at [email protected]. As always, thank you for your consideration and support!

Attention Parents of Rising 7th & 8th Graders,

As part of the CMS athletic eligibility requirements, student ath-

letes must receive a medical examination each year (365 days) by

a duly licensed physician. The summer break would be a perfect

time for you to schedule a physical examination for your child if

they are interested in trying out for a sport during the 2015-

2016 school year. Getting a physical examination in the summer

will ensure that your child meets this requirement for all sport

seasons and will prevent him or her from missing school to get a

physical examination prior to tryouts.

Students must have a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in order to try out and participate in athletics. The student’s previous se-mester GPA is used to determine eligibility. (Example: We will use the spring semester GPA to determine eligibility for fall sports — i.e. football.) Students must also have 85% attendance from the previous semester to qualify.

Fall Sports Season

Tryouts will start Monday, August 31

Female sports offered - cheerleading, softball, volleyball

Male sports offered - football

Co-ed sports offered - golf

Winter Sports Season

Tryouts will start mid-November

Female sports offered - basketball, cheerleading

Male sports offered - basketball

Spring Sports Season

Tryouts will start in late February

Female sports offered - soccer, track & field

Male sports offered - baseball, soccer, track & field

SPORTS INFORMATION FROM COACH SPRENGER

SCMS will once again offer Cross Country in the fall for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Practice will be Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:30-5 pm. There will be four meets. The fee is $50, and there will be no cuts. There will be an informational meeting for parents and students on Tuesday, September 1 after school. Practices will begin Thurs-day, September 3. Spread the word and start doing some walk-ing/running. The goal is to be able to run a mile at any pace by the first day of practice. Try 20-30 minutes of walking/running three to four times a week.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE’S PHYSICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

South Charlotte Physical Education is a program that shapes positive attitudes towards fitness,

achievement, teamwork, and student responsibility. Maximum participation is expected,

necessary, and revered as a foundation for fitness goals and the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Physical Education is REQUIRED for every student by the state of North Carolina.

South Charlotte Physical Education Teachers: Jeff Sprenger and Kristin Kissmann

Students will need: A white short-sleeve crew neck T-shirt, dark color athletic shorts, running or athletic shoes, a small clear water bottle, a one-subject spiral notebook, and a combination lock. (See below for specifications.)

Shirts - white short-sleeved crew neck T-shirts, may have writing as long as it is appropriate for school, must be long enough so that we cannot see any stomach when arms are stretched above the head.

Shorts (GIRLS)- dark color shorts must be athletic shorts (no buttons, zippers, snaps, pockets), NO cotton gymnastics or cheerleading shorts (ex. Soffe) will be allowed, NO shorts with writing on the behind, shorts may not be rolled and must not exceed

mid-thigh (school-length policy).

(BOYS)- dark color shorts must be athletic shorts (no buttons, zippers, snaps, pockets), shorts must end just above the

knee and stay up on hips.

*Shorts are the discretion of the teacher. If shorts are deemed too short (girls) or too loose to stay up on the hips or too long (boys), the student may be required to borrow school PE shorts for class for a loss of 5 pts on their grade. We will show examples the first day of class. Shorts and shirts sold by the PTO (school store) for PE are appropriate for class.

**Inexpensive and appropriate mesh shorts can be purchased at WalMart and Target for $10-$15 and 4-packs of white plain T-shirts can be found at the same stores for $10. Do not spend a lot of money on clothes that are easily misplaced.

We will hit the ground running – literally. To give your child the best chance for success in this challenging course, practice daily strength and conditioning. Staying active and playing outside, as opposed to indoor video games, will allow your child to experience a bit of confidence on day one. We are a fitness-based program that gets results while focusing on student self-motivation, pride, responsibility, adhering to deadlines, and other real-world applicable skills. Results are not achieved without dedication and hard work. Inactivity and obesity have become an epidemic and, with your support and a little hard work, we will return your children to you in better shape than when they entered our class. PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS YOUR BEST HEALTH INSURANCE!

9 Summer 2015

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held Monday, September 14 through Friday, Septem-

ber 18 during school hours, with extended evening hours during Curriculum Nights. We

will be joining forces with Scholastic Books (who recently merged with Cardinal Lane)

to bring you another fantastic year of reading. The Book Fair will offer all required

reading for 6th-8th grades. Please look for the blue form in the packet your student will bring home the

first day of school. Twenty-five percent of all book purchases will go to SCMS PTO. Last year, we sold more

than $14,000 in books — nearly $3,600 in profit for our school. Thank you for your continued support. We

look forward to seeing you again this year.
