10Stand out from the restWe provide opportunities for learning experiences beyond the classroom including:
Working with members of the public and local charities in our ‘FreeLaw’ voluntary law clinic. You could gain valuable work experience in a professional environment, honing your legal skills and working under the supervision and guidance of practicing solicitors.
Seminars and workshops given by professionals from law, criminal justice and academia. These are offered on a range of topics to enhance your educational experience, allowing you to meet experienced professionals and be introduced to new information and ideas.
Mooting in our own Moot Court. You could end up mooting in national or even international competitions, meeting members of the judiciary and have the chance to win mini-pupillages.
Working to overturn real life cases of wrongful imprisonment in our Miscarriages of Justice Review Centre. This fascinating scheme allows you to research prisoners’ cases with a view to overturning their original conviction. Previous students have had the chance to travel to other cities to attend conferences and visit Chicago on a placement to study criminal justice in the US. Barristers working on key cases or areas of criminal justice also give extra-curricular seminars on their work.
The annual Legal Fair, held on campus, allows you access to a wide variety of law firms and other legal employers to present your CV and gain advice on applying for jobs and training contracts.
Joining the Sheffield Volunteering scheme and other university initiatives, such as training to become a Sheffield student ambassador, to help you build a CV that really stands out.

We are multidisciplinary. You can study law, or law with an international and European dimension, law with French, German or Spanish law, or criminology in its sociological context.
Our staff are award winners, as voted by our own students for their excellence in teaching and support.
Our students are high achievers. Year upon year, approximately two thirds of our students graduate with 2:1 honours, or above, in their degree classifications.
We’re rated “excellent” for teaching, by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. You’ll experience a variety of innovative study methods across the various modules we offer and you’ll be taught by leading academics, including professors.
Our student law societies. A friendly community of law students is ready to welcome you and offer a student-mentoring scheme to help you settle into your studies, trips abroad, the Law Winter and Summer Balls and a wide range of social events.
Regular sessions with your Personal and Academic tutor for support and guidance. As a member of the teaching staff here they understand your needs as a law student.
Global agility. We run a very well-established study abroad scheme and send more law students abroad for a year than any other law school in the UK, just one of the ways our graduates distinguish themselves in the job market.
We are an international community and welcome international students to the School, typically hosting students from over 30 countries each year. We also have members of staff from other countries and welcome the cultural diversity and enrichment that this brings to all.
We are the only Russell Group law school in England to offer solicitor training through the Legal Practice Course, providing you with the opportunity to gain a seamless legal education here.

AlumniWe have an impressive array of former students who are now at the very top of their legal careers. Recent graduates also do well in securing training contracts or pupillages. While some students gain contracts with the “Magic Circle” law firms, according to independent research carried out by www.chambersstudent.co.uk we supply more former students to regional and national firms than any other law school.
Here’s a testimonial from a recent LLB graduate now working at an international commercial law firm:
• Addleshaw Goddard• Allen & Overy• DLA Piper• Freshfields Bruckhaus

“I find that the support that students are given by the academic staff is far beyond what I had expected or hoped for. Besides a huge range of studying materials provided, we also have the opportunity to consult lecturers and seminar tutors and also different forms of assessments besides written examinations. This ensures that the teaching is holistic and learning is made more interesting. Instead of just intensive essay writing throughout the course, we are sometimes assessed through group presentations which facilitate learning”
Tan Hui Zhen
There are many optional criminology subjects to choose from.To gain a qualifying law degree, Law and Criminology students study the compulsory first year, followed by at least five foundation modules in years two and three. On our four year courses you take a year abroad as an integral part of your degree course. If you take our LLB Law with French, German or Spanish Law, you’ll study abroad in the relevant language. However, if you take LLB Law (European and International), you’ll study abroad in English, and will be given priority for destination choice.
If you enrol on LLB Law, or LLB Law and Criminology you can choose to extend your studies by a year and spend your third year abroad. Again, you’ll study in English in some fantastic locations.
You don’t have to decide right now, and there are always plenty of destinations to go to. It’s not as expensive as you may think and full details are available at www.sheffield.ac.uk/law.
If you go for a year abroad in Europe you may also qualify for an Erasmus grant. Our academic tutor and dedicated Law Erasmus and Overseas Support Officer will provide a host of useful information and guidance.

Teaching and Learning You can expect to have approximately 8-10 hours per week of formal contact hours in lectures and seminars. We also expect you to spend time engaged in independent study, preparing for lectures, seminars and assessments and self-study is your key to success.
You will be taught and assessed in a number of different ways. Lectures are delivered to large cohorts of students and you will be given an overview of a particular subject by a specialist in that field. Seminars are up to 20 students with a member of academic staff; you will discuss and present on a specific legal topic and will need to prepare in advance.
Our Personal & Academic Tutor system provides 1:1 support and advice from a member of academic staff throughout your studies. Each member of the academic team has weekly office hours, providing you with the opportunity for further discussion on individual academic topics, seminars and assessments.
The Faculty Challenge is designed to give you new skills and improve your employability, working with other students to come up with a solution to a real world problem. You will develop skills in some of the areas that are most important to employers: communication, presentation, teamwork and research.
