The Shalom

Rabbi Heifetz’s Monthly Word Dear Friends, I know that a great many of you share my deep concern about the rising tides of anti-semitism, misogyny, homophobia, xenopho-bia, and religious discrimination around us. Our country faces an important juncture. This historical moment offers a choice between two possible directions: we either defend the essence of democracy, civil rights, voting rights, social inclusivity, ethical governance standards, and international stability, or we capitulate to the growing forces of 21st cen-tury fascism, which feed upon and accelerate the erosion of long-nurtured alliances, hard-won individual liberties, rule-based institu-

tions, cherished political norms, and solidarity across social lines of race, gender, religion, sexuality, etc. Each of us can help to forge a path forward in a more sensible, compas-sionate and democracy-oriented direction. Letters to the editor, calls to our congressional delegation, donations to advocacy organizations, and all sorts of local action can make a difference. Margaret Meade's famous words ring true: "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have." I'm working on several forms of advocacy at this time. For example, I re-cently signed a letter, together with nearly 2,000 other rabbis from across the USA, calling on our elected officials to open our doors to refugees. This goal hearkens back to the words of our Torah, which tells us to ‘welcome the stranger’ 36 times, more than any other commandment. If you want to get involved with efforts to give safe harbor to refugees, please check out the resources and action steps recommended by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). I hope that each of us can find and sustain efforts to secure our country’s path as an inclusive, compassionate democracy, supporting a world of greater freedom, order, and prosperity. Shalom, Rabbi Doug Heifetz

From the Executive Director Welcome to the March issue of the Shalom.

The new security camera sys-tem has been installed. This Internet capable system was made possible through a grant from Homeland Security, which I’ve previously written about. We have 360 degree coverage of the perimeter of the building and can now see

those at the front door and other key locations. The Internet access the system offers us allows the Jew-ish Federation of Greater Washington’s Security De-partment, as well as members of our Oseh Shalom leadership, to check live camera views on mobile de-vices and PCs.

This project is another major milestone for Oseh, particularly at a time when congregations are being cautioned that increased security is the best defense against prospective threats.

In other news, the Torah scroll renovation is in full swing. We have begun having appointments with those who have chosen to participate in the project, hosted a workshop for adults and two workshops for the Religious School, with another where the stu-dents will be writing letters in the scroll on the morning of Sunday, March 5th. Our sofer (scribe) Jeffrey Shulevitz is going to be at one of our Purim Palooza tables, offering to teach people how to write letters in a Torah scroll—and offering prospective member families the opportunity to come to Oseh and write a letter in our Torah. (This is being made possible through a generous gift to the Torah Appeal project.) Speaking of the Torah Repair Appeal, as of February 15th it has raised almost $28,000.

Additionally, we are planning to host five community Torah Repair days beginning the afternoon of Sun-day, March 29, in conjunction with an extensive marketing plan. We are offering an Interfaith Family Day, Ecumenical Day, LGBT Day, Jewish Deaf Day, and a Community Day.

This is a unique project, so if you know someone who may want to participate, invite them to learn more about our project. You do not have to be Jew-ish to participate; we are a rather inclusive congre-gation, after all. Consider gifting the experience be-tween now and the end of March, so they experi-ence the Torah as never before. The program con-cludes in the beginning of May. The renovated To-rah will be read as part of the Saturday, May 13th Adult Bnei Mitzvah.

In another bit of news, “Toast and Roast the Rabbi”

This year, we have been trialing a new program in our third and fourth grade classrooms. The religious school has been using ShalomLearning, a values-based curriculum that incor-porates online elements. Each week, the third and fourth grade teachers spend an hour of their class time teaching around a the-

matic unit. The seven units are:

• Teshuva (taking responsibility for your ac-tions) • B’Tzelem Elohim (honoring the image of G-d in ourselves) • Gevurah (using one’s strength for good)

• Achrayut (making the world a better place)

• Hakarat HaTov (being grateful)

• Koach HaDibbur (understanding the power of words) • Shalom (creating a peaceful world)

These units spiral from year to year, meaning these seven units are taught every year, but the content within the unit changes as students de-velop. For example, third graders who are learn-ing HaKarat HaTov focus on being grateful for family. They learn about giving complements, the family bonds within Exodus, and the morning prayer Modeh Ani (which is about being thank-ful). Fourth graders, in the Hakarat HaTov unit, focus on being grateful through their own ac-tions. So, they focus on Derech Eretz (being a mensch), the Ten Commandments, and text studies on jealousy and coveting (Jacob and Esau, Cain and Abel).

It’s astonishing to see the students make deeper connections to these Jewish values and apply them to the modern world. Every lesson includes videos from the news or from Israel that illustrate the values. The lessons also tie the values to To-rah and our history. In this way, students see how these core values are interwoven into the fabric of Judaism and remain our guiding princi-ples.

We plan to expand ShalomLearning’s curriculum into more grades next year and train more teach-ers on this dynamic curriculum.

RABBI SEARCH UPDATE I have been working closely with my vice-chair, Jean Silver-Isenstadt, with our co-presidents Allison Holtz and Andy Friedman, and with the placement office at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, to develop a search enterprise for our new Rabbi that is transparent, diverse, and truly representa-tive of our congregation, but also nimble and efficient enough to effectively engage in the task of finding the Rabbi who can both creatively and responsibly lead Oseh Shalom into the next phase of our schul’s evolution. With this in mind, we have established a Search Committee that will have four components: • An Interviewing/Selection Committee, charged with reading resumes; interviewing candidates by

telephone, Skype, and/or in person; following up on letters of reference; and ultimately recom-mending a preferred candidate to the board.

• A Communications Committee, charged with ensuring that the congregation as a whole, and its

various components—including the religious school—are kept well-informed as the search pro-cess unfolds.

• A Candidate Relations Committee, charged with designing and coordinating the visits of those

rabbis who pass through the first two rounds of interviews and are invited to spend a weekend at Oseh leading services, teaching classes, and meeting congregants.

• An Administrative Committee, charged with financials and record-keeping. All congregants will be encouraged to remain in contact with Jean and/or me, as well as with any members of the Committee, with their thoughts, questions, ideas, and recommendations through-out the process. In addition, when candidates do eventually have the opportunity to visit Oseh and to display their strengths and talents as spiritual leaders and as teachers, feedback from our mem-bership will be absolutely crucial when it comes to determining Rabbi Doug’s successor. At this point, we have received eight resumes from the RRC’s placement office, and the Interview-ing/Selection Committee has begun reading over these resumes and determining an initial tele-phone interview schedule. From a timing standpoint, it would be optimal for us to have a replacement for Rabbi Doug immedi-ately after his resignation date, to begin August 1, 2017, and in time for the Yamim Noraim, and from a chronological standpoint, we are positioned to do that as we forge ahead. However, I be-lieve we are all in agreement that our main priority is to find the right person, and we are fortunate to have the ongoing presence of Cantor Charlie, as well as the energies of numerous talented lay leaders, the combination of which will enable us to be patient and persistent as we proceed. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to Jean or me, at any point. Thank you, Brad Sachs Chairperson, Oseh Shalom Rabbinical Search Committee [email protected] [email protected] Jean Silver-Isenstadt Vice-Chair [email protected]

Would you like to participate in a very special gift for Rabbi Doug?

On March 25th, Oseh Shalom is "Toasting and Roasting Rabbi Doug" and we'd like to provide him a very special gift from the membership and friends of our congregation.

We'd like to dedicate one of the remaining Books of the Torah as part of our Torah Repair Project to him for his years of service.

Rabbi Doug and his family would therefore have the honor to be the last people to write the final verses needing to be rewritten in our congregation's first and oldest Torah scroll in early May. We’re rededicating the scroll the Shabbat of May 13th at the Adult Bnei Mitzvah/B’Yachad, which Rabbi has been leading.

All donations (of any amount) will be acknowledged to Rabbi Doug and his family, who will be sent a lovely Torah Repair Gift acknowledgement card for each and every contribution made in the Rabbi’s honor.

Gifts can be made online selecting Torah Appeal - and simply noting in the comment line “For Rabbi Doug,” and you can note in the dedication line a specific tribute. Otherwise, checks can be sent to the Oseh Shalom office with “For Rabbi Doug” in the memo.

Help us create a memory book for Rabbi Doug to have as a keepsake from Oseh!

Please send us photos or short videos you have of Rabbi Doug that capture some of your favorite moments and special occasions with him. Maybe he officiated your wedding or your child's naming. Maybe it was him juggling or one of his great Purim costumes.

You can also send a note of appreciation (with or without photos) to him that would be included in the memory book.

This will be a beautiful keepsake for him to see how he has touched our lives over the years.

Submissions should be sent in by March 7 to [email protected]

Torah Project News Haven’t decided to take part in this amazing experience of writing in our oldest Torah, helping us bring long faded letters back to life? Haven’t scheduled your appointment yet, perhaps hesi-tant to?

You and/or your family, Jewish or not, can help us renovate our congregation’s first Torah scroll, written in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century. You’ll first participate in a workshop where you’ll learn your writing technique (no Hebrew required), learn about the process it takes to write and clean the scroll, then you, your family, and friends will come up to the Bima, take quill pen in hand and draw or fill in the outlined letters.

To learn more about the project, visit the Oseh Shalom website.

And since pictures are said to be worth a thousand words, see how much fun working on this project has brought to young and the young at heart to date:

Thank You Dear Oseh Shalom Family,

Thank you for all the caring, love and support that you have shown our family during the challenging and sad times last month when my mother passed away. You were there for us through your presence, your phone calls, your visits, your donations, and most importantly your thoughts and prayers. You made this challenging time much easier and helped us at a time of need. We really appreciate all your love, help and support.

Although we have not lived in Maryland for almost four years, Oseh Shalom is still very much a part of our extended family, and you are the people that we most want to be with at happy, sad, good, and challenging times. Your caring, love, and support mean so much to us. Please continue to be in touch! Although you can't see us, we live stream services and classes on a regular basis and feel as close to the Oseh Shalom community as we did when we lived there.

Thanks again for being there for us. We look forward to our ongoing relationship with all of you. Please keep in touch and visit when you are on the Eastern Shore.

B'vracha,

Monday, March 6, 2017 at 7:15 pm: When Jews Were Funny

Insightful and often hilarious, this documentary surveys the history of Jewish comedy, from the early days of Borsht Belt to the present, ultimately exploring not just ethnicity in the en-

tertainment industry, but also the entire unruly question of what it means to be Jewish.

2013, English, 89 minutes.

Sponsored by the Lifelong Learning Committee. For details contact Judy Katz, [email protected].

Oseh Shalom is a vibrant, inclusive Reconstructionist synagogue, with members throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, dedicated to providing a supportive community for celebrating

Jewish life through prayer, learning and social action.

is being held on Saturday evening, March 25th, 7:00 p.m. at Oseh Shalom. We will be honoring Rab-bi Doug Heifetz for his over 10+ years of service with a concert by Rabbi Hannah Spiro and a lightly roasted chicken dinner (with roast vegetable and a Vegan main course roasted option, of course). Cost is $25 for adults and $12.50 for children (ages 4-12). This dinner is being catered by Men’s Club and is our annual fundraising dinner.

Special thanks must go to Helen Metzman who drew the wonderful sketch of Rabbi Doug on the “Toast and Roast the Rabbi” invitation.

Oh, before I forget, if you have any family pictures with Rabbi Doug at a wedding, bnei mitzvah, or an Oseh event, we would like to create a “wall” at the March 25th event. Please watch for further information on how to participate.

Before concluding, I would like to thank all those who have helped in the office: Mona Davis, Doris Kirschbaum, Mariyan Kolev, Pauline Pivowar, and Shelly Sypes.
