Tim
Join us at the COA this holiday season and enjoy some fun with your friends with all of the
great things happening in December!
The Craftamania is back again this year in both Sturgis and Three Rivers, this was so much
fun last year; I was very impressed with the craft items that all of you created! I thought I
might drown in glitter and the vacuum got quite the workout last year, but definitely worth
it to see the beautiful craft pieces and the enjoyment on so many faces.
Just a quick update on the conversion
of the former TR Inn; we had a
community wide forum in November
and received excellent suggestions
and feedback from those that
attended. We are moving forward
with our plans for the building and
should have final design plans in
December. Thank you to all our
seniors who have been so supportive
of this project. If anyone was unable
to attend the community forum and
have some questions or comments,
please contact us at the COA, we
welcome your thoughts. In the
picture at right is architect Mike Flynn
going over the conceptual design
during the community-wide forum.
Just another reminder about the
satisfaction survey that we
mentioned last month; coming in January/February we will be asking for your feedback on
all of our services. There will be a couple ways to complete the survey; the survey will be
coming in the mail to the senior citizens that we have an address for; and for any others we
will have the survey available for completion online. Please keep an eye out for the survey
early in 2018 and encourage your friends who are senior citizens to complete it as well!
I hope everyone has a blessed Holiday season and enjoys this special time with family and
friends!

tasted pretty darn delicious. A big thank you to all who participated
and congratulations to our winners, First Place - Carol Pursel, Second
Place - Paul Pursel and Third Place - Alice Martinez.
For anyone who might want to do it next year the good news is that
you have just over 300 days to start perfecting your recipe!
In Home Services Department Starts Employee Recognition Program
The Gold Star program was started as a way to recognize home care aides and chore workers who go above and beyond in their work. The COA has 18 aides and chore workers who are helping seniors in their homes with such services as personal care, homemaking, respite care and chores.
Winners are chosen every three months and the first winners were: Rebecca Chiddister, Monica Robison, and Cindy Jacobs.
The winners receive a certificate and a gift card.
“I’m proud of the work that the aides and chore workers do each and every day,” said In-Home Services Manager Sherry Swartz. “They really demonstrate that they understand the mission of the COA and how we are committed to keeping seniors healthy and safe in their homes.”
Students from Howardsville Christian
School visited the Three Rivers COA in
November to participate in the St. Joe
County Legacy Project, a multi-
generational writing project that COA
member Catherine Brady created and
developed.
The project puts seniors together with
high school students who are then
tasked with writing a story
highlighting some aspect of that
senior’s life whether it be memories
of his or her childhood, career, or
experiences in a war for example.
The students interviewed the seniors,
they shared lunch together and then
the students will present the seniors
with their stories in December.

8 Three Medicare Mistakes to Avoid Not knowing could cost you, but here’s how to avoid them
By Joe Garcia, MBA, CLTC
For most people aging into Medicare can be stressful. There is so much information targeting 10,000 people every day
that are aging into Medicare. Learning how to “avoid” the most common mistakes can be the difference between having
coverage and not having coverage.
Assuming you don’t qualify for coverage.
You automatically qualify for Medicare Part A if you have earned 40 credits by paying payroll taxes for 10 years; this
ensures that you will not have to pay any Part A premiums. Part A helps cover most of your hospitalization but there are
still deductibles and co-insurances left to pay. Part B coverage is not based on work history and it covers your outpatient
services and medical equipment. There is a monthly premium for Part B and in 2017 people aging into Medicare can
expect to pay $134 dollars monthly.
So what if you haven’t earned 40 credits? You still could be eligible through your spouse’s work record. If that is not
an option, you are also entitled to sign up for Part A and pay a premium. One mistake that people make is going back to
work to earn the credits and if you are 65 or older, this could be costly because you will have to pay late penalties.
Failed to enroll in Part B
It is critical that you sign up at the right time for Medicare Part B. If you fail to sign up at the right time, you could risk
having late penalties that last a lifetime, your coverage could be delayed or more importantly, your open enrollment
period could end possibly leaving you without coverage.
So when should I enroll in Part B?
When you first turn 65 you have three months before your birth month, the month of your birth month and three months
after. If you are still working you can delay taking out your Part B until you retire.
Not reading your Annual Notice of Change
This document comes every year in late September if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescrip-
tion drug plan (PDP). It will specify the changes in the plan like deductibles, co-insurances, cost and coverage for the
upcoming year.
So what should I do?
You should read this notice every year to understand what the new
cost and changes are going to be. You can compare them to other
plans from October 15th –December 7th and switch if necessary.
If you fail to read the notice you could be surprised with more out
of pocket cost then you can afford.

Our Dinner Night Out program is going strong
and everyone seems to be enjoying the food
and entertainment.
In October, the Three Rivers German Band,
pictured at left, performed several greats
songs for us at the Sturgis Elks Club.
November Dinner Night Out was packed at
the Eagles Club in Three Rivers. Guests dined
on prime rib while listening to some great
songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s.
In December we are going to the Sturgis VFW
to enjoy a ham dinner and will hear some
wonderful holiday songs performed by our
very own Meals on Wheels Driver, Fernando
Garcia.
Fun Fact: From August-October, the TR
Walk With Ease Group walked a
combined 129.5 miles and the ST Walk
With Ease Group walked a combined
123.4 miles. Great work for both groups!

Self Defense for Seniors
Self Defense for Seniors takes place each
month at our centers. Topics will include
prevention, threat assessment, and
physical defensive techniques, including the
use of the cane. Refuse to be a victim - learn
to fight back.
In Three Rivers, the group meets the first
Monday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and in
Sturgis on the first Tuesday of the month at
10:30 a.m.
All COA members are welcome to
participate and there is no cost. You also do
not need to sign up in advance; just show up
and learn how to feel more secure in your
home and other places.
We had so much fun celebrating Halloween with our Halloween Costume Contest at both
our centers. No one in Sturgis could figure out who that masked panda was. Our
Receptionist Danielle and our Life Enrichment Coordinator Kelsey got into the spirit and
looked great in their costumes.
A big thank you to Pinnacle Health Care for donating prizes to the contest winners!
