The Secret River AnalysisThe Secret River, an enthralling, vexing, and stereotype-negating novel by Australian author, Kate Grenville, explores colonial relationships between European settlers and the original owners of Australian land, the Aboriginal people, by telling the story of William Thornhill, an emancipated convict, and his settlement of land on the Hawkesbury River. Grenville more subtly and thoughtfully challenges traditional views of Australian history, which see Australia as being settled peacefully by the English and which consider Aboriginal culture, as it existed during Australias colonial era, as culturally and technologically inferior to European culture and so inevitably superseded.
