We were in the middle of our staff meeting monday afternoon,
when my phone beeped a text message. it was from Karen: “bombs at the finish line of the boston marathon.” everyone around the table grabbed their phone, as with the rest of the nation we watched the first pictures from the marathon finish line. the orange explosion—twice, just a block apart. the surreal pause. then mayhem. And now the casualty count this morning—3 dead, 183 injured, 13 amputations. our hearts and prayers reach out to boston and the grieving families.
but haven’t we dreamed this nightmare before? “Déjà vu all over again.”
And yet, have you noticed, our shock levels seem a tad depressed? granted, 9-11 was a tragedy of epic proportions. but the steady drum beat of subsequent global terrorist

o lord, the infinite and eternal living god, who makes and keeps
his promises and pours out mercy to those who love him and keep his commandments; we have sinned and done wickedly, we have rebelled against You by ignoring Your servants the prophets who spoke in Your name. o lord, You are righteous altogether, but to us belongs shame and reproach for ignoring the special instructions You have given for us in these last days.
You have shown us the way to physical and spiritual health, but we have slighted the health principles. like israel who so often did not consult the urim and thummim, we have ignored Your messages. Your holy Word and other books gather dust as the time of our visitation passes us by. We are rich and our eyes bulge with the fatness of our possessions. We feel we need nothing more because we have everything our hearts desire! Yet we are like drunkards laying in the gutter, half clothed with rags, and crusty scabs over our eyes. through our negligence we have given the ungodly excuse to ridicule and blaspheme Your Holy name and character.
o lord hear and have mercy, o lord see and help us, o lord—our lord, reach out Your loving hand and wake us up! We have been proud and deluded ourselves saying, “the plans we have made are exactly what is needed for the salvation of the world.” but You have said, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit . . .” help us admit our shortfall and turn from the
fascinations of this earth. give us the eye medication we so desperately need and the courage to stand for right though the heavens fall. lord do not delay, for Your own reputation is on the line. time is fleeting and we must awake out of our pious stupor.
We do not pray because of any virtue we possess but because of Your great mercy. You have promised that Your people will shine as the sun and turn many to righteousness. give us Your holy Spirit that we may hour by hour and day by day replicate Your character as You have promised, and that we will not give the ungodly any excuse to scorn Your name. –Dennis Hollingsead

please pray:
• That the God of all Comfort willmend the aching hearts and make himself known to those who grieve the recent death of loved ones. We especially remember howard’s (pseudonym) family from last week and those from the attack in boston this week.
• That we will have the heart andattitude of Daniel to pray for our church and to see our great need to rely totally upon christ, the true and Faithful Witness.
• That the students on campus willcome to know the reality of Jesus christ.

congratulations to our evergreen pathfinder club as they progress in
the pathfinder bible experience (pbe), the official North American Division (NAD) pathfinder bible bowl program. this is a team-based challenge to test the pathfinders’ knowledge of sections of Scripture. So far our evergreen team has placed first at the local, conference, and union levels.
members of the evergreen pbe team are: Abigail pribisova (captain), Jonathan logan (scribe), caleb capps, Samuel clough, Jamison moore and coulter Slikkers with their coach, peter pribis, and assistant coach ryan clough. the team has been preparing
since November, studying the books of Acts, 1st thessalonians and 2nd thessalonians. they have memorized Scripture, quizzed each other and held “mock meets” with pmc pastors and seminary students. they are ready to answer specific questions from these books. each question is worth points. For example, the question, “According to Acts 18:24, how is Apollos
described?” would be worth 4 points. the correct answer would be “a Jew, born in Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in Scripture.”
pbe is a new pathfinder event that NAD started last year. this is
the first time pmc has participated. today our pbe team is in lincoln, Nebraska, to take part in the Division level of the challenge. thank god for this program that encourages young people to hide god’s word in their hearts! –C. Roxanne Maxwell

Were you able to attend the
Andrews university passion play? if not, you missed out on a powerful event. there’s just something about witnessing the life and story of Jesus that is powerfully transformative. You probably noticed that there were a few changes to the passion play. For one, the groups were smaller. in the past, the groups have been rather large, and people have not been able to see all the scenes. that’s why the decision was made to have the event over two days with more rotations so that people could have a more intimate experience. A few scenes were also tweaked to highlight the great controversy experience that Jesus went through. Finally, the closing two scenes—the crucifixion and the resurrection—all took place in the gym.
As people left the final scene they were led to the pmc hospitality tent, where water and hot chocolate were served. on the chilly mornings like
we had, the hot chocolate went a long way towards warming people up. We also gave away a special version of the Desire of Ages to all who wanted one. A “memory” table was available where people could write down special memories they had of the event. Finally, instead of having a prayer corner like we had the previous year, several people from our prayer ministries teams at pioneer and Andrews circulated throughout the tent and prayed with people. through your financial support of the master plan of evangelism, as well as giving sacrificially of your time as a volunteer, we were able to make this a positive and warming experience for thousands of people. thanks! –Rodlie Ortiz

ruth murdoch elementary School has a lot of great traditions and
events, but one of the best is our Wednesday morning assembly.
our entire school, students, faculty, staff, and often parents and friends, gather in the gym for an hour of worship and praise. With approximately 300 people ages 5 – 95 in the same room, it can be an uplifting and interesting experience for sure!
each class leads the assembly by providing praise songs, Scripture, our school pledge, and more. then a special guest provides a worship thought for the day. our guests this year have shared many different aspects of god’s love. Dr. Andreasen, president of Andrews university, kicked
off the year at rmeS with a pop quiz for our students. Your Story hour visited, showing us how the sound effects are created in their stories. ADrA told us about the importance of helping others. rich Aguilera from one mustard Seed told us all about creation and let our students participate in a game show! FlAg camp, missionaries who have traveled the world, and more have spent time telling us all about god.
but more important than these special guests are the guests that we invite into our assembly worship on these days. We always begin by inviting Jesus and his angels to be with us, to fill us with his love, and to stay with us for the entire day. What an awesome way to begin the day! –Wendy Keough

acts—london, madrid, bombay, Kabul, baghdad, Jerusalem—has beaten down our once painful sensitivity. Add to the international carnage this past year’s twin tragedies in our own homeland—the mass killings in Aurora, colorado, and Newtown connecticut—and it may explain a collective freezing or at least diminishing of our emotional acuity. the repetition of evil numbs our perception of it and depresses our response to it. After all, how many times in a row can the human heart be triggered by inconsolable grief?
“‘This is my Son, whom i love. listen to him!” (mark 9:7) What would christ say to boston, to our nation, to the world? What word from him could assuage our pain, our fears? Would it be a healing word for our beaten emotions? or is there any healing left for us?
if as is evident our civilization is retrograding—if this steady drum beat is but a harbinger of that which is to come—then does it not follow that those who hear christ most clearly (his followers, his disciples, his friends) will be his Kingdom’s
most natural frontline to advance a word of hope and promise in the midst of this emotional carnage? Wouldn’t it follow that besides educating our young, our most significant resources should be invested in communicating the healing word of Jesus to as many alive today as possible? in every nation on earth?
What if we raised up a generation of young, within this generation of earth, to be trained, equipped and mobilized to personally take that message of healing into this world?
today. the gYc and AYc movements, and other such similar spin-offs, may yet prove to be the godsend the church has been languishing for. otherwise, if the institutional church simply keeps processing its young through its universities, with degrees but minus the passion and equipping of radical young disciples, what have we done to advance the Kingdom agenda in a society now desperate with fear and hopeless confusion?
At some point, somebody is going to say, enough is enough. god help it to be you.

the Seal lullaby, a composition for wind symphony by eric Whitacre
(b. 1970), derives from a poem by rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), a tender tale of parental protection. American composer Whitacre has said that Kipling wrote of “ the mother seal singing softly to her young pup.” Whitacre has further commented, of his simple song from which today’s composition derives, and perhaps
a bit whimsically, that he “…sang it to [his] baby son every night to get him to go to sleep. (Success rate: less than 50%.)” A stanza of the Kipling lyric provides context: “Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow, / oh weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease! / the storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, / Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas!”
therefore i tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. are you not much more valuable than they?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

here at pmc we are blessed to be able run a large-scale media
ministry each and every week. this is possible in no small part to the army of dedicated volunteers who donate their time on a weekly basis. electronic media is an important part of worship here at pioneer. From hearing the speaker via the p.A. system, to seeing images on the screen, technology is at the heart of everything we do. making this technology work requires a team of dedicated volunteers—15 each week.
can you picture yourself minister-ing through technology? this sum-mer, we are looking for new volun-teers to join the media team. No experience is needed, but a passion for excellence in ministry is required. if you would like to consider be-ing a camera operator, helping with the audio system, or creating power point contact:
