Feast of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Feast Day: February 22ndOn Ascension Day, 1920, Pope Benedict XV bestowed the honors of sainthood on a youth who is rightly called the Aloysius of the 19th century. Francis Possenti was born in Assisi, March 1, 1838, known in religion as Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. He joined the Passionists, a religious congregation dedicated to the veneration of and meditation on the passion of Jesus Christ in 1856.Saint Gabriel did not stand out from his community in any extraordinary way. His heroism lay in his obedient attitude. He conformed himself to his community in complete humility. Pius X and Leo XIII desired that he be the patron saint of young people and novices in religious orders, as their model in the interior life. He died in the year 1862.Saint Gabriel Possenti wrote: “Love Mary!... She is loveable, faithful, constant. She will never let herself be outdone in love, but will ever remain supreme. If you are in danger, she will hasten to free you. If you are troubled, she will console you. If you are sick, she will bring you relief. If you are in need, she will help you. She does not look to see what kind of person you have been. She simply comes to a heart that wants to love her. She comes quickly and opens her merciful heart to you, embraces you and consoles and serves you. She will even be at hand to accompany you on the trip to eternity.”

OMPH PARISH MASTER PLANPlease see Fr. John’s January 26, 2021 Letter to Parishioners on our website omphchurch.com for information regarding OMPH Parish Master Plan.

Dear Friends,

What image comes to your mind when you think of Lent? Penance? Fasting? Sacrifice? A time to do something difficult and severe, or perhaps a time to give up or abstain from something dear to us? Though all of these may have their place during the Lenten season, Lent is primarily a time of preparation and growth through anticipation of and celebration of Christ’s saving sacrifice. Marilyn Gustin points this out so aptly in her book “Living the Liturgy,”

“It is a time for our own conscious, deliberate effort to cooperate in our own transformation. If our life in God is to become vital in our experience, we must be involved in ongoing and repeated transformation. It does not have to be forced, but it does have to be real. God’s grace will do most of it, but our cooperation is required. During Lent, we make our cooperation as conscious and disciplined as we can.”

This cooperation can take many forms, from extended time reading the Scriptures and praying, to various forms of fasting – to make us conscious of Christ on whom we should focus. We see in the gospel today, how important it was for Jesus to be alone with His Father in prayer before He begins His public ministry. Jesus was divine, but He was also human. He, too, needed to spend “special” time with His Father to be strengthened for what lay ahead.

While Jesus was in the desert, He responded to each temptation of the devil with a quote from Scripture. This intimate acquaintance with God’s Word strengthened His resolve and provided the answers to combat each alluring temptation.

The Sacred Scriptures are available to us, to enlighten us and through its inspired words, to assist us in our transformation of becoming holy. Most importantly, reflecting on the New Testament and particularly the gospels, hopefully, we become more like Christ.

So whatever else we do during this Lenten season, we need to make sure that our hearts and minds are available to His transforming presence through the Sacraments, prayer, and reading and reflecting on God’s Holy Word.

As Catholics, we can readily take pride in the fact that we have preserved, defended, and venerated Sacred Scripture for centuries. On the other hand, we must acknowledge that many of us as Catholics are undeniably ignorant of both the Scriptures and the teachings of the Church. Sadly, for some, Catholics’ commitment to know and study God’s written word is often less than that of many non-Catholic Christians.

During this season of Lent, perhaps Sacred Scripture can become more central in our day to day lives as Christians, so we can be transformed by the Living Word of God who heals, consoles, encourages, and strengthens us for the journey ahead.

May you grow closer to Christ this Holy Lenten Season, and may Mary, our Mother, watch over you and protect you always,

Father John

CHURCH OF OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP – THE REDEMPTORISTS EPHRATA, PENNSYLVANIA

BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCHVenerable Augustus ToltonThe miraculous journey of the first black priest in the U.S., who escaped slavery as a child. Father Augustine Tolton was the first “known” American diocesan priest of African descent. (Tolton Collection-Brenner Library-Quincy University)

Tolton was born enslaved in Missouri in April 1854. His parents, Peter and Martha Tolton, had him baptized Catholic, the faith of the family that “owned” them. When the Civil War broke out, Peter Tolton joined the Union Army. Martha Tolton also fled with her three children, a bid for freedom that nearly ended in capture. The Toltons were chased through the woods by Confederate slave catchers, but were smuggled by Union soldiers and ended up in Quincy, Illinois, where they joined a Catholic church.

Tolton’s mother took him to a Catholic school and asked the priest to allow Augustus to study there. He was eventually kicked out because he was negro. However, Fr. Peter McGirr, was impressed by Tolton’s billiance and mentored him, teaching him Latin and Greek. He encouraged Tolton to enter the priesthood, although no seminary would accept him because of his race. Then Fr.

McGirr wrote letters to Rome, saying Augustine was brilliant. In 1880, Tolton was sent to Rome, where he entered the seminary at Collegium Urbanum de Propaganda Fide. Six years later, on April 24, 1886, at the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome, Augustus Tolton was ordained a priest.

Tolton wrote that he thought he would be sent as a missionary to Africa, but the Vatican ordered him to return to the United States, becoming a popular pastor of St. Joseph Church in Quincy. In 1891, he was sent to Chicago, where he opened St. Monica’s Church, built with donations from philanthropists Anne O’Neill and Katherine Drexel. “It is the first Catholic church in the city to be built by colored people,” a January 15, 1894, article in the Chicago Tribune reported. But just three years after St. Monica’s dedication, Tolton was on his way to the church on a hot day when he fell to the sidewalk, apparently suffering from heatstroke. He died at Mercy Hospital in Chicago at the age of 43.

Tolton is one of six African Americans and three formerly enslaved being considered for sainthood — a process that can take decades.

Lenten Activities at OMPH School

OMPH School’s Lenten theme for the year, “Love Leads the Way,” reminds us that our loving words and actions during Lent lead us to Jesus, The Way. During Lent, our school community practices the Three Pillars of Lent in various ways. We begin the school day with daily Lenten prayers during our morning Newscast, and the Middle School students reflect and respond to the Seven Last Sayings of Jesus. Our students actively participate in the Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent, led by our 8th Grade class, and we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a community of believers. In addition to prayer, we practice almsgiving by donating to the Missionary Childhood Association using Lenten boxes provided to each of our students. These donations help children in many countries to know Jesus through both physical and spiritual support. During Lent, we sacrifice our time and energy for others in many loving ways, giving ourselves

to Jesus through these sacrifices. We focus on sacrificing our love to Jesus through our words and actions for others. At the end of the Lenten season, the OMPH School 2nd Grade class performs a Passion Play to remind us of the greatest sacrifice of love, Jesus’ Passion and Death, and the hope that He gives us in His Resurrection.
