Scouters,

Wow! It is hard to believe that this is my last

Commissioner’s Corner. The past four years

have seen many changes; new Area and

Council crests, new uniforms, new training

requirements, new recognition process

“Thanks” and yes, we cannot forget My

Scouts. Communications have improved with the addition

of Scout Scene emails. Hamilton-Wentworth has seen the

introduction of Scouts in Schools. It gave several hundred

youth a brief introduction to scouting programs and a visit

to Camp Nemo. Hamilton-Wentworth Scouting made its

mark on the social media with the “Girls in Scouting” vid-

eo - Jake Chisho lm, Megan Winchester and Zoe Shepherd

made us extremely proud! It is amazing what our youth

can accomplish.

I would not have been able to fulfill my duties without the

assistance and support of many leaders. I would like to

thank and acknowledge the Hamilton-Wentworth DACs,

Group Commissioners, Help Desk, Revenue Development

Committee, Scouting Auxiliary, Camp Committee, Banquet

Committee, Apple Day Committee, Dispatch, Popcorn Co-

ordinators, trainers and special events camp chiefs. With

your commitment and support, Hamilton-Wentworth pro-

vided the youth with great opportunities and program-

ming - creating positive memories for all involved.

In addition, I would like to acknowledge the support I have

received from the key three over my term, Tom Morrow,

Stephanie Childs, Mickey McPherson, Cale Hubber and

Catriona McCready.

It has been a challenge as well as an awesome experience;

growing in knowledge and friendships.

YiS,

Sandra Taylor, AC [email protected]

Hamilton Area Scouters,

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a

restful holiday.

This January our 2014 Bring a Friend

week from council, took place on Jan-

uary 19-24.

Group Commissioners: you will have received email bulle-

tins reminding your groups how to prepare each week

leading up to that event. Alternatively, groups can find all

the resources they need to run this event at:

w w w . s c o u t s . c a / J S 2 G . Finally for all Groups/

Sections please remember to submit to me the “BAF report

and redemption form”. This will ensure your youth re-

ceive their Scout bucks and crests.

As many of you know, Victoria and I were in a horrific vehicle accident on No-

vember 2nd. Many Scouting volunteers banded together to take on tasks to keep

both Hamilton Scout House and Camp Nemo running.

I am very grateful to all who have helped. At this time I will do my best to thank

those personally and I hope I don’t miss anyone - if I have, please contact me and

let me know.

I would like to thank Colin and Joan Barty, Mark Winchester and the Help Desk

volunteers for looking after the day to day things at Scout House. Also I would

like to say thank you to Jim Bryce, Bob and Sharon Miller, Bob Pissey, Elizabeth

Barrow and Mark Winchester for their quick response to the flooding at Scout

House.

During my absence at Camp, Gerry Bluhm, Sharon Miller, Rick Provo and Cam Napholc stepped in to take care of

maintenance and the factors. As many know, the ice storm hit camp and knocked out power for several days, not to

mention many trees came down from the ice. Many people stepped up to clear trees and cut them up into fire wood -

Cam, Rick, Linda, Elaine, Amanda and Peter, just to name a few. Also I would like to thank Linda, Elaine and Brent

who helped me clean out the wood shed on the Scout Basics weekend.

During the power outage, Gerry, Cam, Harold and Rick worked hard to rewire the furnaces to generators and install

heaters where needed to ensure the water lines did not freeze - THANK YOU!!

I would like to thank my Rover Crew for heading out to camp before the holidays and rounding up fallen trees in the

lower area of camp for firewood. Firewood does not just appear - several people worked hard to ensure there is fire-

wood for the colder months. Typically Cam and Gerry cut the wood into small pieces then Linda and Elaine split the

small logs into pieces. There is now firewood at camp - please use it responsibly. I remind you that, by order of the Bur-

lington Fire Department, camp fires are not allowed to be more than 3 feet (1 M) high.

Also at camp you will find program items for your groups - just ask the factor for one of the 2 bins. And don’t forget the

HICOP centre: the volunteers are there to help you by providing great programing for the junior sections, from Beavers

to Scouts. As always, they welcome anyone who would like to help them. This is a great good turn or service project for

the Venturer or Rover sections.

As a last reminder, I ask that anyone making camp bookings to read the terms and conditions that can be found on the

SWO booking site. Maybe this can be a put on your next group committee agenda to review as there have been a num-

ber of late and last minute cancelations in the past couple of months.

Thank you to all who use Camp Nemo.

Yours In Scouting

BOOKING EQUIPMENT AT THE HELP DESK?

Be sure to speak with a Help Desk Volunteer who will

ensure the booking is recorded at the Help Desk.

Have you thought about the Scout Guide Parade yet? Have you thought about the

annual Scout Guide Parade food drive? Well this year is the 25th anniversary of the

food drive at Parade. As in all years past, there is a need of food and monetary dona-

tions to help keep food on the shelves of our local food banks. This year we are trying

to get more food bank locations involved, to make donations easier and neighbour-

hood localised. As we get more details of locations to make donations, we will let you

know. The 88th Hamilton Venturers will again be collecting along the Parade route

this year. Our donations were down last year both in weight and in dollars. Let’s work together to change that this year.

To celebrate our 25th anniversary as part of the Parade, the food drive competition is going to be back on again but with an addition.

The group that raises the most for the food drive will again earn the right to march first in the Parade after the party, but all mem-

bers that participate in the food drive will earn a crest for their camp fire blanket!

The competition will run from January 1, 2014 through May 1, 2014. After May 1, donations will still be accepted, but it

will not count toward the contest totals. We are asking that groups obtain a receipt of donation, including the weight of the food and

your group name. This is so that we can track who has made the highest donation

How can you make this more challenging? Perhaps you can challenge your youth to collect the weight of one of your lead-

ers in food or even better yet, the collective weight of your leadership team! When it comes to hungry stomachs of our city's youth,

we cannot do enough.

18,600 people per month turn to a food bank

8,157 (44%) are children under the age of 18 These statistics are from HAMILTON!!!

Let’s do our best to help to feed our future in more ways than one.

25th Annual Parade Food Drive ** Need we say more **

SCOUT & GUIDE PARADE SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2014

Planning is already underway for the parade in May. Last

year's parade and anniversary party were both great successes

and we hope to achieve, or exceed, that high standard again

this year.

The 2014 parade line up will be as follows:

Hermitage Springs, Mohawk Trails, Albion Mills, Dundurn,

Kingshead and “Out of Town” groups.

Finally, now is the time to incorporate the Parade Food Drive

into your program. We are very proud that the 2014 Parade

will host the 25th consecutive year of helping our fellow citi-

zens through your donations to Hamilton Food Share. Please

remember: “Poverty is complex. Helping is not.”

SCOUTERS FIVE

I WISH I WERE THAT BROTHER

Upon graduation from college, a few years

back, a young man received a gift from his

older brother. It was a shiny brand new Pack-

ard. The car of his dreams! One morning as he approached the car he saw a young lad of 12 peering through the win-

dows into the car! Obviously enthralled with the car, the lad didn't hear the young man approach. "Is this your car?" the

lad asked when he noticed the man. "Yes it is!" the man responded! "Wow! This is a nice car!" remarked the lad, "How

much did it cost?" "I don't know!" answered the man. "It's your car, but you don't know how much it cost?" exclaimed

the young lad. "No," stated the man, "you see, my brother bought it for me!"

"I wish...I wish...I wish" stuttered the lad. The man thinking he's going to say, I wish I had a car like this. "I wish I was

like that brother!" finished the boy! Amazed at the lad’s response he offered to drive him around the block! As they

were driving, the lad requested if he would drive him home. Thinking he wanted to show off that he was riding in a

new car to his friends, the man agreed! They drove more than a few blocks to where the boy lived and as he turned onto

the street the man noticed that it wasn't the best kept neighborhood! The houses were dirty and broken. He pulled up in

front of the boys house. "Please wait," the boy yelled as he ran into the house! "Oh, he's probably going to get his family

to show off the new car", the man thought to himself.

The door to the front door opened and out came the young lad. In his arms he carried a small boy,

crippled from birth! The lad brought him out to the car, and stated, as he hugged his younger broth-

er, "See, just like I told you! It's a brand new car! And someday, I'm going to buy you one just like it!"

How unselfish this boy was....to be the kind of brother that looked after others first!

What kind of Scout are you...are you like the older brother?

Plan your journey to ADVenture 2014, the National Venturer Scout Jamboree, taking place Aug. 2-9, 2014 in beautiful Newfoundland and Labrador. The program details are still being planned, howev-er, we can guarantee a program that will challenge you, and provide you with new experiences in a truly unique part of Canada. Some of the exciting activities the team is busy working on include:

Biking • Hiking • Canoeing • Sea Kayaking

SCUBA • White Water Rafting

With pieces of the program taking place in beautiful Terra Nova National Park, nestled on the Atlantic Coast. For our Venturer Advisors – In partnership with Paddle Canada, you will have an opportunity to complete the Waterfront Canoeing Instructor course. The successful Waterfront Instructor candidates are considered canoeists who have the knowledge, experience, and skill to teach and demonstrate all the necessary skills for the Waterfront program. The Waterfront Instructor will be able to safely imple-ment a Waterfront Program for novice level canoeists in a designated calm flat-water environment.

This will provide our Scouters attending ADVenture with great training and it can have a real impact on your outdoor program!

Registration for ADVenture is NOW Open! In the meantime, you can check the website and start making your plans to attend – you don’t want to miss out on this fantastic Adventure.
