A DAILY PRAYER for the WEEK

Christ is the Head of his body, the Church, and we are the members of that body; gathered this evening to pray in his name, we say: – Your kingdom come!

May your Church be a light to the nations, the sign and source of your power to unite all people: may she lead humankind to the mystery of your love. – Your kingdom come!

Guide our Primus and all the bishops of your Church: grant them the gifts of unity, of love, and of peace. – Your kingdom come!

Lord, give peace to our troubled world; and give to your children security of mind and freedom from anxiety. – Your kingdom come!

Help us to bring your compassion to the poor, the sick, the lonely, the unloved; lead us to find you in the coming week. – Your kingdom come!

We pray for all people in their need: let your loving presence be known to them, bless and uphold them. – Your kingdom come!

Awaken the dead to a glorious resurrection: may we be united with them at the end of time.

– Your kingdom come!

In a moment of silence, call to mind the concerns of your own heart and lift them up to God.

Conclude with the Lord’s Prayer.

SAINTS THIS WEEK -

St Robert McDonald (Canadian Calendar 30 Aug) On Thursday the Canadi-an Church honours Robert McDonald, an Episcopal/Anglican priest who ministered in the western Arctic from 1862 until his retirement forty years later. McDonald was the son of a Scottish father (Neil who has immigrated to Canada and worked with the Hudson’s Bay Company) and an Ojibway mother (Ann Logan).

He based himself at Fort McPherson, a trading post in the Yukon, and journeyed westwards into Alaska, ministering to the various Kutchin tribes who inhabited the re-gion. His greatest achievement as missionary and pastor was to train and support native ministers. He regarded himself more as a resource for their work than as a master clergy-man who had to keep all authority in his own hands.

He also proved to be a serious ethnographer, with several ground-breaking studies of native life and language to his credit.

Because of this “mixed blood” background his superiors in the Church Missionary Society treated him as a second-class priest. Their reports on work in the Arctic always referred to “the European missionaries — and Archdeacon McDonald.” He knew of this prejudice and deeply resented it, but he never let it affect his love of Christ or deter him from the work of helping native people come to feel the same love.

We remember him — because he was a priest whose devotion to the gospel sur-mounted prejudice for the sake of enabling the native people of the Arctic to become full partners in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. (A street is named for him in Winnepeg, Mani-toba!)

information

Dear All, I hope that you are all well following the lovely hot summer that we have had. I wanted to let you all know that we are planning to re-start The Black Isle Youth Fellowship fol-lowing the summer break. Last year was very encouraging, with around 8 young people regularly coming along to the group. All the young people who came had connections with local churches, but we hope that the programme is also accessible to young people who are not from a church background. We would really appreciate if you would pray for the year ahead. Our hope is for the young people who know Christ to grow in their Faith, and that others would come to know Him. We also hope that the Children would be an encouragement to one another in their Faith within their local and school setting. This term we will aim to hold the YF on the first Saturday evening of the month (although this may change on 3rdNovember due to Bonfire night). We’re going to be looking at the Gospel of John this term. The First YF will take place on 1st September in Fortrose Town hall from 7:00-8.30 pm. We would also be grateful if you would pass the details on to anyone who you think may be interested. Please use the flier below that can be printed out.

With Kind Regards,

Dave and Sally Knight
