February 18…Waukaubec Celebration in 7th grade! Wii/Playstation/XBox games and pizza to eat! Waukaubec is a goal setting program for the 7th grade students. We usually set a goal for students to turn in their work on time in order to qualify for the Waukaubec. For our first Waukaubec, the students were rewarded with donuts for having minimal assignments turned in late. For this last Waukaubec, students were only allowed to turn in one late assignment per class and were rewarded with a video game party after school where we had Mario Kart, American Idol karaoke, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, and more! We ordered pizzas and waters to celebrate! For the last Wauk, we make it an even bigger surprise and the requirements are even stricter!

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word:

and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers, and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. Did that one crack you UP? We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP or mess UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now .........my time is UP !

If you like this, you could send this to everyone you look UP in your address book…or not...it's UP to you. Now I'll shut UP.

5th Annual Little Dreamers Book Drive April 1 -30, 2011

This is the fifth year of our Little Dreamers Book Drive which is held each April. We collect books for children whom might not otherwise have them, in order to increase children's literacy. The books do not need to be brand new, just gently used. Every book donated goes to a family who cannot provide books for their children. Then books we collect are distributed through the READy to Learn program of The Rockford Literacy Council. We have been very successful in gathering books to support the success of this program with 4,342 books donated over the past 4 years. The look on the council member’s faces when we drop off book donations is incredible. Helping out the community, even by donating one book or two, truly makes a significant difference. We appreciate the community's willingness to help us in our mission of helping to share the joys of reading and learning. Book drop off locations include Rockton Grade School, Whitman Post, Stephen Mack, and also the Big Sky box located outdoors at 309 E. Union St. With your donation, you could help change America, one book at a time. We appreciate any help you can provide and are excited for another successful year.
