Foreign affairs: a Journey through the Best ofForeign-Language cinema5 weeksAre foreign-language pictures superiorto our own movies? The answer maynot be as simple as either/or. Lecturerand film critic Kevin Courrier investi-gates the timeless work of directorslike Carl Dreyer (The Passion of Joanof Arc), Jean Renoir (The Rules of theGame), Vittorio de Sica (umberto D)and Ingmar Bergman (Smiles of a Summer night), as well as contempo-rary foreign-language filmmakers work-ing in their shadow, to illustrate howinfluential their work was.

woody allen Past and Present 5 weekswhen woody Allen first began makingmovies in the late sixties (Bananas,Take the Money and Run), he became a heroic voice of the counter-culturewho satirized popular stereotypes ofwasp ideals and images. He continuedto be an artist of his time through Loveand Death and Sleeper, but after thesuccess of Annie Hall (Academy Award, Best Picture), he began todoubt that voice. He started makingsolemn dramas (Interiors, Anotherwoman) as opposed to comedies.while he continues to work on his ownterms, audiences still wait and hopeand respond - as they did with Midnight in Paris.
