February 2019 Board Background Information/ 1

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF NORTH FOND DU LAC

BOARD BACKGROUND

February 25th, 2019 – Board of Education Meeting

“Working Together for the Success of All”

J. Superintendent’s Report

1. Treffert Way Charter School Update – Working on Contract The Treffert Way Team will be at the meeting to update how enrollment, contract development

and staffing are going. I included the document from last year in February – a great reminder of

the potential of this great charter school!

2. Referendum – Building Update – ELC Plans – FLC Move – Safety Raptor The building is going fast and furious! During this time I will share the plans that we will look

to put out for bids on the ELC project, updates on FLC and Kerri jo will share the plan for

transition to FLC at the beginning of April. I will also show a video of the Raptor Visitor and

Background Check/Volunteer Background Check services that the District will be investing –

3. Personnel Update - Postings We are already looking at 2019 – 2020 Staffing – we already hired one educator for next year

and I have a school psychologist on the agenda for your approval today! With the retirements of

4 incredible educators we will be posting some jobs this week, along with a new 2nd Grade

educator position. I look forward to sharing more on our great staffing opportunities.

4. Review of State Board of Education Convention The Board will share information and experiences from the WASB State Convention.

5. Review AASA Governing Board and Convention I was fortunate to go to Los Angeles two weeks ago and participate in AASA National

Governing Board meetings (I am one of 5 Wisconsin representatives) and learning sessions at

National Education Convention. I was also honored with an award for being the Superintendent

of the Year in Wisconsin (one of 51 people recognized, all 50 states and Canada). I will share

insights of the state of education in on country and how Wisconsin is dealing with educational

issues and opportunities. One of the best sessions I attended was about before and after school

programs that could have a great positive impact on our schools – the company that provides the

programs is called Right at School – CLICK HERE for the website.

February 2019 Board Background Information/ 2

6. School Start Time After receiving input from staff, administration and reflecting on research and information, I

have a new path that I want to share with the Board about changing the school times at BAMS-

HMHS to 8am – 3:10pm and ELC-FLC to 8:45pm – 3:45pm. Although I believe that this

change will have a positive impact on achievement and growth (or at the minimum, not

negatively impact), I believe the main reasons we should consider changing times are:

Safety – specifically in the winter months for more sun light and more time for roads and

sidewalks to get plowed and “hopefully” warmer temperatures

School Attendance – specifically less 1st hour tardies and more alertness

Enhanced Opportunities for Staff Development and Student Opportunities – at all levels

staff will have more time to get meetings and learning accomplished before and possible

student course and training opportunities before school

I look to sharing ideas, looking for input and want guidance on how to proceed

7. Discuss Possible Cell Tower I met with the representative from US Cellular and worked out a contact that I believe, along

with the attorneys, would be amicable to both parties. The question is do we want to have that

built there? We would receive around $12,000 a year for a 20-year lease term. If we want to

continue and pursue this opportunity, a special meeting would need to be called specifically for

this decision. I look forward to the conversations.

K. New Business

1. Discuss and Consider Contract for the 2019-2020 School Year for Rachel

Polacek – School Psychologist I am very excited to recommend Rachel to be our next School Psychologist. Chris and her

team did a great job finding Rachel! I look forward to sharing more about Rachel.

I recommend the Board’s approval Rachel as a school psychologist in our District.

2. Discuss and Consider Establishing an Activity Account for INCubatoredu

Student Awards Establishing this account allows the students in INCubatoredu to access funds to develop

their Most Viable Product (MVP) and keep on their journey as an entrepreneur.

I recommend the Board’s approval of establishing this activity account.

3. Discuss and Consider Changing the March Board meeting from Monday,

March 18th, 2019 to April 1st, 2019 Thank you for considering this date change.

I recommend the Board’s approval of changing the March meeting to April 1st, 2019.

4. Discuss and Consider Adding 10 minutes to the HMHS-BAMS School

Daye Starting Monday, March 4th, 2019

By doing this, and having school on the previous two make up days and on Friday May 3rd,

we will be incompliance with the State Statutes for hours of instruction. At the 5K – 5th

grade level we are good and do not have to add time. We have communicated with Johnson

Bus and the change will not be an issue.

I recommend adding 10 minutes to each day starting March 4th at BAMS and HMHS.

5. Discuss and Consider Resignation of Educators This is a bittersweet recommendation to approve 4 educators to move on the next chapter in

their lives. I am proud and happy for each of them and also know they will be missed greatly

– Once an Oriole, Always an Oriole! Thank you Paul, Ginnie, Connie and Gerry!

I recommend the approval these 4 educators retirement requests.

February 2019

✓ Meaningful Assessments

○ All Grade 1-5 classroom teachers and reading intervention teachers participated in individual reflection conversations with STAR Champion Jenny Grafton, Literacy Coach Karlie Sawitski and Principal Kerri jo Patten to review student, class and grade level data from the Winter F&P and STAR benchmark assessments

○ Teachers are assessing for growth and proficiency

✓ Growth Mindset ○ Student report cards will indicate student growth and achievement for the entire school year

● Common grade level data should originate from priority standards and assessments that measure attainment ● Working on a guiding document for evaluating and refining our current common assessments

● What is the assessment? ● Who takes the assessment? ● Who administers the assessment? ● When do we administer the assessment? ● How do we use the data from the assessment? ● Who do I contact for support or if I have questions about the assessment or data?

○ Objective is mastery of priority standards by the end of the school year ● Developing a plan for those who don’t achieve mastery: summer remediation/extended school year; next year’s teacher continues

to instruct and assess; intensive intervention ● Developing a plan for those who attain mastery before end of year: enrichment

✓ Targeted Professional Learning ○ February embedded professional learning with Karlie Sawitski focused on the Fountas and Pinnell Continuum

✓ Data-Informed Decision Making ○ The majority of students are doing an excellent job demonstrating their belief in the Oriole Way. We had one new office referral for 1st

Grade students, six new office referrals for 3rd Grade students, three new office referrals for 4th Grade students, and three new office referrals for 5th Grade students. The total number of office referrals to date is 171, with 3% (18) of our 504 students in Grades 1-5 having three or more office referrals. We are exceeding expectations for great citizenship and we are very proud of our positive student culture!

○ Growth projection charts for students in reading interventions are being discussed for measuring the efficacy of current practices in classroom and small group instruction

✓ Culture, Celebrations & Acknowledgements ○ 1st Grade performed “Happy, Healthy, Totally” for a nearly full house on February 5. Here’s a link for your viewing pleasure. Kudos to

Heather Fauska for her dedication to our students and the fine arts! ○ At last count, FLC students raised $3441.82 in the Pennies for Patients campaign, smashing the school-wide goal of $3000. Thank you to

all Student Council members, families who contributed, and to Jenni DalleNogare and Jenny Grafton for serving as our Student Council

 January 2019

✓ Meaningful Assessments

○ January assessments included STAR Early Literacy, Reading, Math; Words Their Way (Grades 2-5); Fountas and Pinnell (F&P); Sight Word Reading; and wrapping up any ACCESS testing as needed

○ Special Education Case Managers at FLC worked on scheduling and assessing students on their caseload for STAR and F&P in collaboration with classroom teachers

○ Classroom teachers are assessing their student independent, instructional and frustrational reading levels with the F&P Benchmark while students attend three days of Literacy Camp organized by Karlie Sawitski and Angie Long

○ Site Assessment Coordinators - Expanding and Enhancing by naming site-based individuals to be lead teachers/point of contact for scheduling, problem-solving and supporting specific assessments

✓ Targeted Professional Learning

○ January inservice agenda and participant feedback . Site-based collaboration and learning works very well for K-5 system since we do not have significant blocks of common time throughout the day, and we have teachers and staff working E3 before and after school.

○ January embedded professional learning with Karlie Sawitski focused on refresher sessions for administering F&P and goal-setting ○ January workday presentations included "Stress and Work Balance" by Dr. J from Dynamic Chiropractic and Wellness Center; “Treffert

Way” by Beth Dardis, Karen Bartelt and Tiffany Dolan; and “Language Differences” by Morgan Pelot

✓ Data-Informed Decision Making ○ Teachers are gathering data about student reading behaviors through the F&P assessment and will be writing new instructional and

individual student growth goals for the remainder of the school year. I will confer with all classroom teachers to review progress to date and projections for May, and this will be reflected in Frontline/My Learning Plan (the tool used to document professional growth)

○ Students are doing an excellent job demonstrating their belief in the Oriole Way. We had two grades that had no office referrals in the month of January - way to go 1st and 2nd Grade Friends! We had three new office referrals for 3rd Grade students, three new office

Page 58: The School District of North Fond du Lac Board of ... · 2. Referendum – Building Update – ELC Plans – FLC Move – Safety Raptor 3. Personnel Update – Postings 4. Review

referrals for 4th Grade students, and six new office referrals for 5th Grade students. The total number of office referrals to date is 148, with 3% (17) of our 504 students in Grades 1-5 having three or more office referrals. We are exceeding expectations for great citizenship and we are very proud of our positive student culture!

✓ Culture, Celebrations & Acknowledgements ○ With regret, we are saying farewell to Liz Legler (K-5 School Psychologist), who is relocating to DeForest and will be greatly missed! In

addition to serving students and staff in problem solving, testing, evaluations and consults, Liz has been an integral member of our Allies in Mental Health (AMHE) K-5 Team, our Oriole Way (PBIS) Tier 1 team, and our Equitable Multi-Level Systems of Support (RtI) process work.

○ It was a privilege to be part of the celebration honoring Aaron Sadoff as WI Superintendent of the Year! Photo link :) ○ Links for our Monday Morning Meetings are posted under FLC Announcements

December 2018

✓ Meaningful Assessments

○ As we prepare for the January assessment window for STAR and F&P, we reflected upon the +/Δ (Plus/Delta, or Keep Doing/Change) from previous assessment plans. Jenny Grafton is developing the STAR schedule for classroom teachers and Lindsey Pietrowski is developing the list and groupings for individual students who will be taking the STAR assessment 1:1 or in a small group in a separate setting to ensure the best outcome for measuring student growth. Angie Long and Karlie Sawitski are developing a Reading Camp that will provide engaging and educational activities for three days per grade level to allow for classroom teachers to test students 1:1 without interruption, free from lesson planning. Here is a link to more information .

✓ Growth Mindset ○ Student Growth Conference Forms (in English and Spanish) were shared with families during face-to-face conferences in November 2018

and parents had the opportunity to weigh in on home/school communication during our November Family Engagement Night. We heard that the amount of information on the conference form, coupled with the face-to-face conversation, was preferable to a cumbersome report card. Parents shared that they appreciated the acknowledgement of their child’s strengths as well as what their goals were. One opportunity we can grow is communicating ways that families can support the growth goal at home as well.

○ Given the feedback, work is now underway on the elementary report card. Pam Ciha is championing this change as our teacher facilitator, doing an outstanding job of seeking input from the entire faculty on when to meet, using our change management and Improvement tools effectively, and capturing and communicating the thinking to everyone in a very timely fashion. Here is a link to our current progress . One consideration that was raised was whether or not a mid-year report card was appropriate in January, as the Winter benchmark assessments are underway and new information would be forthcoming just a few weeks later. Families who provided input indicated that they would be satisfied with the two conference updates and one comprehensive summative report at the end of the year. Thoughts?

○ Special Education needs of our students determine how we support individuals, classrooms and staff. With leadership from Chris Schultz, Judy McKeough, Liz Legler, Kristen Eide, and Lauren Biolo, we have captured our Continuum of Specialized Student Services at FLC . We have also updated our Primary Response Team protocol to further clarify expectations to ensure students and staff remain safe.

✓ Targeted Professional Learning

○ Classroom teachers engage in up to three days of professional learning each week, embedded in the school day.

Page 59: The School District of North Fond du Lac Board of ... · 2. Referendum – Building Update – ELC Plans – FLC Move – Safety Raptor 3. Personnel Update – Postings 4. Review

○ Teachers of Grades 1-5 will engage in two F&P Assessment refresher learning sessions prior to administering the Winter benchmark. Kindergarten and any other teachers not involved in administering the Fall F&P assessment will engage in four or five learning sessions before school prior to administering the Winter benchmark. Karlie Sawitski will lead these sessions to support common assessment practices, projections and goal writing.

○ As part of the mid-year review of annual goals, all classroom teachers in Grades 1-5 will meet with me, Karlie Sawitski and Jenny Grafton to analyze classroom-level Winter F&P and STAR benchmark data, focusing our conversation on student progress, planning for new instructional and student growth goals for the next trimester, and reflecting upon their own professional growth before updating their SLO and PPG as part of the annual review cycle.

✓ Data-Informed Decision Making ○ Students in Grades 1 and 4 are following Oriole Way and have the fewest number of office/major referrals thus far (17), followed by our

5th Grade (23), 3rd Grade (35) and 2nd Grade (44). The total number of major referrals to date is 136, with 16 of our students having three or more referrals.

✓ Culture, Celebrations & Acknowledgements ○ Welcome back Amanda Weed, Tiffany Dolan and Colleen Anhalt, all returning from maternity leave and ready to start the new year! ○ Teri Grabbe and Erica Harbath are once again leading Adopt-A-Family, and have close to 100 students already identified as needing a

merrier holiday through the generosity of community and private sponsors. Donations can be forwarded to FLC (payable to School District of NFDL ℅ Adopt-a-Family)

○ Linda Schultz, Penny Serwe and Kelly Schaefer ran another successful Scholastic Book Fair, with Scholastic Dollar profits coming in at $3076.04

○ Student Council members, under guidance of Jenny Grafton and Jenni DalleNogare ran an extremely successful candy cane sale, with proceeds of $787.25 benefiting Adopt-A-Family. Way to go Student Council and FLC Families!

○ Jane Mongin created our FLC video honoring Aaron Sadoff as WI Superintendent of the Year during a recent school-wide Monday Morning Meeting. Links for the video and our previous MMM are posted under FLC Announcements

November 2018 ✓ Meaningful Assessments

○ Proficient readers and writers display recognizable behaviors at every phase of literacy learning. When teachers notice, teach, and support these behaviors, they link assessment to responsive teaching. Classroom teachers in K-5 are working on identifying the reading behaviors for the F&P levels typically represented within their grade, creating a checklist that can be used to measure incremental growth between benchmark assessments. Teachers will be able to use these checklists for those students who are significantly above or below grade level as well, due to vertical alignment of this assessment.

✓ Growth Mindset ○ Student Growth Conference Forms (in English and Spanish) were shared with families during face-to-face conferences in November 2018 ○ Special Education needs of our students determine how we support individuals, classrooms and staff. We are working to develop a

structured learning program called the NEST, which will focus on nurturing social-emotional thinking for students who are experiencing barriers to accessing their education due to trauma or mild mental health challenges that can still be serviced within the school setting. Kristen Eide will be the lead teacher, and we anticipate there will be two students participating in this learning environment in December

Page 60: The School District of North Fond du Lac Board of ... · 2. Referendum – Building Update – ELC Plans – FLC Move – Safety Raptor 3. Personnel Update – Postings 4. Review

(the vision is to maintain a ratio of no more than 4 students to 1 teacher and an aide due to the level of student need).

✓ Targeted Professional Learning

○ The Trauma-Sensitive Schools (TSS) team (Terri Jagodzinski, Amy Walters, Ashley Kreiter, Judy McKeough, Lauren Biolo, Liz Legler, Erica Harbath, Amy Martin and Erin Luther) developed and delivered professional learning for ELC and FLC teachers and staff on October 26. Teachers learned about the implementation of safe spaces, the effects of trauma on how students access their education, as well as how parents and other adults could and should respond to build resilience in affected children.

○ Classroom teachers engage in personalized Literacy coaching conversations every other week, and have Karlie Sawitski (K-5 Literacy Coach) work with them on individualized conferring goals within their classroom weekly. Teachers are using their work from the F&P benchmark analysis and continuum to plan and guide their instruction and coaching sessions.

✓ Data-Informed Decision Making ○ Students in Grade 1 are following Oriole Way and have the fewest number of office/major referrals thus far (13), followed by our 4th

Grade (16), 5th Grade (18), 3rd Grade (28) and 2nd Grade (34). The total number of major referrals to date is 109, with 14 of our students having three or more referrals.

✓ Culture, Celebrations & Acknowledgements ○ Teri Grabbe and Erica Harbath are once again leading Adopt-A-Family, and have close to 100 students already identified as needing a merrier holiday

through the generosity of community and private sponsors. Donations can be forwarded to FLC (payable to School District of NFDL ℅ Adopt-a-Family)

○ Linda Schultz, Penny Serwe and Kelly Schaefer ran another successful Scholastic Book Fair, ringing up more than $5000 in sales during conferences ○ Lauren Biolo, Dean of Students, serves our students and staff with a smile and has been a great addition to our leadership team ○ Judy McKeough has stepped in to support Kindergarten students receiving special education support until Trisha Krueger is able to assume this role full

time in December (Trisha is currently covering Amanda Weed’s maternity leave at FLC)

○ Jenny Grafton and Jenni DalleNogare have our student leaders engaged through a candy cane sale, with proceeds benefiting Adopt-A-Family ○ Jane Mongin creates the best slides and videos for our weekly Oriole Way Monday Morning Meetings - links are posted under FLC Announcements ○ Morgan Pelot has been very flexible, filling in for classroom teachers when we have had teacher shortages due to last-minute illnesses or cancellations

October 2018

✓ Meaningful Assessments

○ STAR Reading and Math results will be shared with parents in January and May in order to show student progress over time ○ STAR Reading and Math data has been reviewed during 1:1 conferring sessions between the classroom teacher and Jenny Grafton ○ Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) benchmarks were administered 1:1 between the classroom teacher and student, and analyzed with support

from K-5 Literacy Coach, Karlie Sawitski. While analyzing individual student F&P results, teachers considered strategic reading behaviors each child needs to learn as well as areas that they are consistent in. Teachers used the Continuum to write specific goals for each student using the following guiding questions from Karlie: What strategic actions do I know this child needs more instruction in? How do I know that? What behaviors did I observe? What do the numbers mean? What patterns do I notice in their data?

What is inconsistent about their data? What goal should we work on first? How would I prioritize the goals?

Page 61: The School District of North Fond du Lac Board of ... · 2. Referendum – Building Update – ELC Plans – FLC Move – Safety Raptor 3. Personnel Update – Postings 4. Review

✓ Growth Mindset ○ Student Growth Conference Form (in English and Spanish) will be shared with families during face-to-face conferences in November 2018

and February 2019. Families who are unable to attend conferences will be invited to meet with the classroom teacher on an alternate day ○ Grade Level Teams meet weekly to plan instruction and review student work

■ 1st Grade Team meets from 1:30-2:00 on Thursdays ■ 2nd Grade Team meets from 12:20-12:50 on Fridays ■ 3rd Grade Team meets from 10:10-10:40 on Thursdays ■ 4th Grade Team meets from 12:20-12:50 on Wednesdays ■ 5th Grade Team meets from 10:50-11:15 on Thursdays

✓ Targeted Professional Learning

○ K-5 Teachers, Literacy Interventionists (Margaret Logemann, Rachel Martinez, Lindsey Pietrowski), Literacy Instructional Aide (Angie Long) and Literacy Coach (Karlie Sawitski) engaged in Lucy Calkins Reader’s Workshop professional learning with Christy from Teacher’s College, focusing on grade-level specific strategies for anticipating student reading behavior challenges and how to instruct so students overcome the challenges and move levels; reviewing the key components and structure of a successful workshop; improving stamina; helping students create their individual reading identities; and exploring teacher options for small group instruction and read aloud. Aaron Sadoff participated in the 5th Grade session, learning alongside the team.

○ Teachers in Grades 1 and 2 participated in a webinar to learn more about implementing Keyboarding Without Tears, and began instructing with Chromebooks (students spend approximately 50 minutes per week learning this online tool which teaches through game-based tools for finger dexterity, finger-key association, and typing letters and words). Teachers in Grades 3-5 received professional learning for Keyboarding Without Tears in August.

○ Teachers in Grades 2-5 participated in Words Their Way professional learning with Sam from Pearson, and are using the data from the Fall assessment to place students in the proper spelling stage for formal word study

○ Karlie Sawitski planned and executed this Professional Learning Plan to prepare classroom teachers for administration of F&P Benchmark

✓ Data-Informed Decision Making ○ We believe in assessing, not guessing. ○ Liz Legler (K-5 School Psychologist) is monitoring K-5 student assessment data in eduClimber to ensure data integrity and quality measures

are in place prior to, during, and following educator data entry and analysis ○ Students in Grades 1-5 who screen in the 0-9th percentile rank in STAR Reading or STAR Math are flagged for further data analysis which

may lead to an intervention in literacy (Margaret Logemann, Rachel Martinez, Lindsey Pietrowski) or math support (Teri Grabbe) ○ Students in Kindergarten completed the PALS assessment and Liz Legler will work with Margaret Logemann and the Kindergarten teachers

to determine groups for Title I intervention in literacy ○ All classroom teachers' individual Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) should be written as "80% or more of my students will demonstrate a

year (9 months) or more of growth in their F&P instructional reading level." The evidence for the baseline data is each student’s current instructional level from Fall 2018, and then teachers use the projections (5 jumps for mid-year/January and 9 jumps for end-of-year/May) to set the growth target for each student, recording it on the projection/goal sheet . Teachers scan and upload the student projection/goal sheets when submitting their SLO, and once per month, teachers will review their student literacy data (conferring notes, reading records, running records) with the Literacy Coach and/or Principal. Classroom teacher Professional Practice Goals (PPGs) need to be related to conferring, set in partnership with Karlie since we are all aligning our professional learning to the district literacy goal. to choose another topic for their professional growth may do so, but would be working on that as an additional PPG. ○ Students in Grade 1 are following Oriole Way and have the fewest number of office/major referrals thus far (4), followed by our 4th Grade

(9), then 5th Grade (13), and finally 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade (14 each). The total number of major referrals to date is 54, with seven of our students having three or more referrals.

✓ Culture, Celebrations & Acknowledgements ○ The Allies in Mental Health Education (AMHE) team (Julie Shafer, LPN; Katie Baumgartner; Deanna Lemke; Kim Jodarski; Erica Harbath; Liz

Legler; Kristen Eide) is developing an action plan to better serve K-5 students who may be experiencing difficulties with mental health. ■ The team AMHE mission: Creating and providing a systematic way for identifying and matching students and staff with the mental

health supports they need to feel connected and safe at Friendship Learning Center. ■ The team AMHE vision: Collective happiness and connectedness brings academic and emotional gains for all. ■ The AMHE team has selected a social emotional learning screener to pilot with 2nd grade students. The screener is administered

by the teacher to all students whole group, and is intended to be used with a curriculum that, at the elementary level, is delivered universally 30 minutes, three times per week for ten weeks. Then, for students who screen for an intervention, there is additional instruction. We can accommodate the universal and Tier 2 through our school guidance program.

○ The Trauma-Sensitive Schools (TSS) team (Terri Jagodzinski, Amy Walters, Ashley Kreiter, Judy McKeough, Lauren Biolo, Liz Legler, Erica Harbath, Amy Martin and Erin Luther) is developing upcoming professional learning for all ELC and FLC teachers and staff on October 26

○ Students in Jamie Johnson’s class invited teachers and staff to attend their Author Celebration on October 5 (see pictures at the end of this report) ○ Teri Grabbe, Lindsey Pietrowski, and Rachel Martinez worked to create a Master Services schedule for all students in Grades 1-5 who receive at least

one support outside of the classroom (speech, social skills, literacy, math, self-regulation, OT/PT, etc.). Currently, students are receiving a total of 309 specialty services in addition to universal instruction from their classroom teacher

○ Our behavior support team (Deanna Miller, Renee Schnell, Natalie Rosas, Amy Martin, Nate TeStroede, Trish Krueger, Kristen Eide) are working hard to help all students be successful in school; for those students who need additional support outside of FLC, Amy and Trish are meeting their needs as well

○ Students in Jackie Krupp, Rashelle McCallum, Amber Coats, Katie Baumgartner, Julie Kremer and Kim Jodarski’s classes participated in the Pillowcase Project on October 19, presented by Nick Cluppert and Jesse Coates. The project is a free one-hour preparedness program sponsored by the Red Cross, which informs students about fire safety and another disaster topic (flooding, tornado or winter storm). The students learned how to be better prepared for a disaster and received an activity book to work on with their family. They also got a pillowcase to design with fabric markers and take home to start building their own disaster preparedness kit with their family.

○ The NFDL Firefighter and Rescue Team visited FLC students on October 15 to share a presentation about fire safety and to check out the vehicles ○ Jamie Johnson’s brother-in-law, Alex Crockford, grows pumpkins for her family’s Grampa’s Farm fall festival. The family donated a small pumpkin to

each student at FLC, which Jamie delivered in two farm truckloads to ensure that each student received one. Thank you Jamie and family!

○ Alex Schumacher, better known as Big Al on 107.1 The Bull, visited FLC classrooms to record our students saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Recordings will air at or close to 9am, with FLC students leading the pledge on air each weekday from November 7 - December 6. Here is the specific schedule.

○ Erin Luther continues to coordinate some delicious and creative potlucks for staff bonding each month. We have excellent cooks and shoppers at FLC! ○ Kelly Schaefer, Penny Serwe, Ali Sharpf and Linda Schultz are keeping our students safe with close supervision and gentle reminders on the playground! ○ Lauren Biolo (Dean of Students) and Judy McKeough (Program Support) are doing an outstanding job in their new roles and Co-Coordinators of E3. ○ Jenny Grafton and Jenni DalleNogare have our student leaders engaged through Student Council, Heavenly Hats, and as morning greeters ○ Jane Mongin creates the best slides and videos for our weekly Oriole Way Monday Morning Meetings - her work may win a PBIS video award this year! ○ Morgan Pelot has been very flexible, filling in for classroom teachers when we have had teacher shortages due to last-minute illnesses or cancellations

ELC/FLC SLO/Action Plan 2018-2019 Building SLO: 80% or more of K-5 students will demonstrate a year (9 months) or more of growth in their F&P instructional reading level as measured by the Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) Benchmark Assessment System 2, 3rd Edition, with growth projected by this research-based chart from Fountas and Pinnell.

Action Steps Responsible Timeframe Resources Potential Barriers Result

If we do these steps, we will meet our goal.

Who will do it?

By when?

What do you need to complete this step?

What could get in the way of task completion? How will you overcome them?

What is the outcome of the task?

We will administer Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (Grades K-5).

Teachers

3 times a year

Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment 3rd Edition

Assessment data is only as good as the information gathered, since this is 1:1. Teachers need to be able to devote their full attention to the student they are assessing, and this is difficult when the teacher is also expected to manage and provide meaningful instruction to the remaining students. To overcome this barrier, a schedule has been created to provide three days of instruction by a guest teacher so the classroom teacher can focus on the assessment. The guest teachers are FLC teachers, so there is no additional cost to the district.

Fountas and Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment will be administered to determine student reading baseline for Independent, Instructional and Frustration Levels. Students will make 1 or more year’s growth from the start of the year to the end of the year.

We will use baseline data to make projections of where students should be in Winter and Spring, and set goals that will move students along the reading continuum.

Teachers Reading Specialists

Teachers will not have an adequate amount of time to analyze the student data. Teachers will not have a deep enough understanding of the assessment and/or how to analyze the results. Schedule time for Individual teachers/ teams to analyze their student projection/goal sheets. To overcome these barriers, we have developed a professional learning calendar that involves all classroom teachers three days per week during the school day. Professional learning is developed and provided by our Literacy Coach. Each teacher also gets an uninterrupted hour of 1:1 support from the Literacy Coach to gain deeper understanding of the Fall F&P benchmark assessment results, including the review of projections; write individual student goals; learn more about analysis, including MSV; or plan next steps for instruction based on this evidence.

We will grow teacher capacity, which will result in increased student achievement!

We will focus Instructional decisions based on student data.

Teachers Reading Specialists Instructional Assistants

Ongoing Time to analyze student data. Time to plan instruction to meet all student learning needs. Time to reflect on instruction that was delivered and formative assessment (conferring) to inform our next steps in instruction.

To overcome potential time barriers, we have developed a schedule for biweekly 1:1 coaching conversations with the Literacy Coach and weekly 1:1 conversations with the Principal. We have embedded focused professional learning time and team time within the school day as well.

Instruction will respond to all student learning needs OUR ULTIMATE GOAL - differentiation!

A great group of 10 young men represented Oriole Nation in amazing fashion this weekend taking 2nd place out of 100 teams at the 2019

WIFA State Championship held on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, WI! There were over 900 high school anglers competing in this

event!!

Our guys worked together to near perfection, catching a total of 38 out of 40 possible fish over 5 different fish required fish species. Our

If you see or know these gentlemen please congratulate them on a great tournament: Wyatt Ziemer, Coltin Lamb, Dakota Krupp, Conor

A special highlight was sophomore Zack Wendt catching a 20.25" Largemouth Bass, which was the biggest Bass caught in the tournament.

Keep in mind there was over 850 students participating in the State Championship!

DISTRICT GOALS PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE CORNERSTONES

Maximize Student Learning in Literacy for ALL Provide High Quality Instruction for ALL Focus: Feedback to Students Promote a Happy Culture for ALL District Instructional Focus Areas: Not what we are teaching, but what students are learning. February 2019

Early Learning Center

The 4K programs (Treffert, Arts for Kids and Advocap) will be hosting Registration for 4K on March 14 from 6:00 - 7:00 at the Early

Learning Center. Parents are invited to attend and complete paperwork, tour the facility, and ask questions. In order to register a child, two

pieces of information must be provided: the child’s birth/baptismal certificate and proof of residency. Refreshments and child care will be

provided. Questions can be directed to Kim Sales, special education secretary and ELC receptionist, at 920-929-3762.

Bessie Allen Middle School and Horace Mann High School

The Horace Mann special education staff gathered as a team following ACT testing on Wednesday, February 20 in the library. The group

enjoyed lunch together and participated in a team building activity, Totem, focused on discovering personal strengths through the eyes of

others. Following the activity, the group toured the Friendship Learning Center special education program offerings. The purpose of the tour

was to grow understanding and gain perspective of the district continuum of services beginning at the elementary level. When we look at

the big picture, it reinforces the philosophy that “we are better together.”

The administrative team, specialists, teachers and paraprofessionals are engaging in conversations regarding our NFDL Continuum of

Services. As we grow as a district, this continuum will fluctuate with varying needs of the students we serve. The purpose of this living

document is to serve as a starting point with the understanding that it is tool to capture and assess current and potential needs.

CCOT is hosting a Q&A session for parents of children with disabilities nearing the transition from high school to adulthood from 9:00 -

10:30AM on March 30 at the Department of Community Programs located at 459 East First Street, Fond du Lac. A continental breakfast will

be provided. There are many changes and resources available that many parents may not know about. The goal is to help families navigate

confidently through the transition process. Any questions can be directed to Angie Liner, ADRC, at 920-929-3460 or Mrs. Weigandt, Horace

Mann special education teacher, at 920-929-3740.

Special thanks to Jana Weigandt for creating and sharing the February Special Education Newsletter with Horace Mann students and

families!
