Office of Highway Safety awards
SADD grant to Baldwin High School
JMA enjoys Tropical Friday
Contributed photo
The Georgia’s Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded Baldwin High School a $6,200 grant to aid the school’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club to continue and maintain its efforts to educate the students and the commu-nity about the hazards of destructive decisions, particularly as it pertains to highway safety. This includes, distracted driving, seat belt usage, speeding, illegal use of alcohol or drugs and cell phone use while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle, along with other destructive decisions. The Baldwin High SADD club will use these funds to continue to implement programs designed to raise awareness about teenage vehicle crashes, which is the leading cause of death among teenagers in America. The grant will enhance Baldwin High School’s existing SADD chapter through the idea that student input into the solution will help alleviate the problem of teen driver fatalities in Georgia. Baldwin High School’s chapter president Aaliyah Mitchem will be representing Georgia and Baldwin High at the SADD National Conference to be held in Phoenix, Ariz. on June 23-26, 2019. For more than 30 years, SADD has been committed to empowering young people to lead education and prevention initiatives in their schools and communities. Pictured: SADD Student president Aaliyah Mitchem presents the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) grant award to Ja-son Flanders, principal of Baldwin High School and Crawford Finley, SADD advisor.

At JMA, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Fietkau cre-ated a fun way to review math skills by creating a crime scene to find out who stole their teacher’s calculator. Students had to solve five sets of place value ques-tions before observing the crime scene. Congratulations to all the students who solved the mystery. They used their in-ferencing skills to determine that it was a mouse.

Contributed photos
Georgia College Theatre students recently presented Jim Knable’s play ‘The Truth About Dinosaurs’ to Lakeview Academy third-graders. LVA students were highly engaged and entertained by the work, which presented facts about different dinosaurs while also gently teaching about empathy, com-passion and character. The presentation was made possible by Communities in School site coordinator, Christi Tyson, in cooperation with the GC Theatre Department. The play, directed by Aspen Brown and stage managed by Ela-na Wilson, was produced as their senior Capstone project.

In order to meet the increasingly rigorous demands of a 21st century education, Lakeview Academy has implemented a curriculum that includes a STEM explor-atory class. To date, students have created online avatars and digital cartoons, engineered wallets, built towers, and raced personally designed and engi-neered hovercrafts.
