Happy Holidays

The January Newsletter will contain a synopsis of the 2014 Legislation pertaining to Dogs in Maine and New Hampshire.

A conference call with the representatives of the Maine Federation of Dog Clubs centered around the topic of E-Collars. Opinions were varied.

Electronic collars have been banned in England. In response to this on September 13, 2014 the FOX network (Fox and Friends interviewed AKC

Assistant Vice President Ms. Gina DiNarodo. Apparently Ms. DiNardo misrepresented the AKC's position on training, especially the use of electronic collars. The AKC subsequently issued a policy statement indicating that the views expressed in that interview do not completely represent the position of the AKC.

The concern of the federation is this interview could provide ammunition to animal rights activists to seek legislation to ban the use of Electronic collars.

I would greatly appreciate any comments and concerns from our club members. If you have the opportunity contact your breed parent club and share with us their opinions on electronic collars.

I have contacted FOX for a transcript of the DiNardo interview and hope to have it for our next meeting.

Happy New Year Eileen Kelly

United Dog Sports of Northern New England Presents:

A Beginner’s Introduction & Workshop on UKC

Open to dogs of any size, breed or mix!

Slightly curious about the sport of Canine Weight Pull? Think your dog is made for it? How about

an individual sport for Total Dog opportunities? This workshop will cover the basics of UKC weight

pull, the rules, methods of training, health and mental benefits, and proper exposure to equipment. Dogs will

have the opportunity to pull different equipment using positive motivation and handlers will learn how to safely train and

practice for sport or fun!

In addition to titles, awards and a physical outlet, trying new sports can enhance the bond with your companion, build

confidence, help build muscle and conditioning and offer an alternative exercise option. Trained dogs are happy dogs!

Dogs will not be pulling massive weights at this workshop. Dogs will progress on an individual basis and at the instructors advice. Modifications

will be made for growing puppies, dogs with known injuries and prior orthopedic surgeries.

Beverages and light snacks will be provided, however you may want to bring a brown bag lunch.
