Welcome to our rd issue, another bumper pager! There is so much going on in Rossendale this summer, you cannot fail to have ideas with which to entertain your children.

In this issue’s Out & About section we have included Singleton’s Maize Maze and Spaceport on the Wirral. Not quite local, I grant you, but well worth the journey, especially when that fantastic summer weather comes along! Closer to home, try to keep an eye on upcoming events at The Whitaker or the enormously successful Fun4Families holiday programme, or a family favourite, Week of Wonderful Things (which is now two wonderful weeks!). We must mention the ever-popular Family Fun Theatre week being held at Fearns, Bacup. They are planning the most amazing activities and fun days for children and families, all at fantastic value. Please go along and show your support, and don’t forget to have fun!

We also take a moment to think about those of our children moving from primary to secondary school; it must be nerve-racking, more for us than them, I bet! So we have included an article written by a 1 year old girl to help soothe the nerves of our youngsters and reassure mums, dads and carers!

As we complete and distribute each issue, it never fails to surprise me how much positive feedback we receive, so once again, many thanks.

Bring on the sunshine and have a great summer holiday!Tracey

Driving in a car in hot weather can be a trial for both driver and

passengers. When our new-born baby arrived last year, it was so uncomfortable that we needed to get the air-conditioning working again- and fast.

Many people have air-conditioning or climate control in their which doesn’t work- and the reasons can be simple and cheap to fix.

If your air conditioning has got less effective over time, a simple re-gas of the system could get you cool again for £40+VAT. Most car manufacturers recommend a service and re-gas every years.

We can also diagnose and fix your air conditioning if it has not worked for a long time, or has suddenly stopped. Many problems are caused by a coolant leak. One cost effective solution could be re-gas and the addition of a leak-stop additive for £70+vat. Or if your air conditioning has not been used regularly it can develop an unpleasant odour; we can eliminate this with an anti-bacterial treatment for £0+vat.

Nick, owner and proprietor of

Ian Knight Automotive is a qualified air conditioning technician. If anyone knows what’s cool, he does!

Lifelong aviation fans Steve and Vicky Everson might not have opened

an airport just yet but they can offer the next best thing with new Rossendale business ‘Flightdeck Experience’.

What began as a hobby based in their home has now expanded into a fully-fledged flight simulator experience where individuals and corporate groups can come and find out what it’s like to pilot a jet airliner complete with a 1 seater cabin, airbridge and departure lounge.

‘I started out with a desktop computer and some flight simulator software when I trained as a glider pilot so that I could practice my flying at home but I had always had a keen interest in Commercial Aviation since visiting the cockpit of an airliner on a trip to Spain as a child.

My desktop setup soon expanded

until it eventually became a complete cockpit replica of a Boeing 77 in our spare room at home. It got to the point where we had to cut a door in the bathroom wall to access the flightdeck’ says Steve

After having lots of friends and family visiting the flight deck the couple (who incidentally married on Concorde in Manchester), realised that the experience might appeal to a wider audience and secured a business unit in Stacksteads .Then began the massive task of assembling the simulator and cabin which was fitted with many parts rescued from disused airliners around the country.

Flightdeck Experience opened for business in January and so far the response has been excellent with customers ranging from a 1 year old would be pilot to a Business owner who brought along his family to enjoy him captaining a flight to Allicante.

Where do you fancy jetting off to!

During the last long summer break, I wanted to try something

completely different with my older children, rather than another park, castle, theme park or museum; something we could all enjoy together. I remembered visiting a maize maze years ago and so I searched for one that was reasonably local. The one I decided on was at Singleton, just outside Blackpool, about 40 minutes away by car. What a great choice! What a great day!

A maize maze is a confusing series of paths created within a field of corn that is between eight and ten feet tall. This is definitely a weather-dependant summer activity. These crop mazes typically open each year in July, but by October the maize season is coming to an end and the plants are harvested, usually for animal feed.

The Maize Maze at Singleton changes every year, with a different theme and new challenges. I thought this would be just the activity to entertain my then six and eight year old but, as it’s situated on a 1 acre site, I thought it would be too hard going for my four year old. I was right on both counts.

So I packed up a picnic and filled the car with everything; wellies, waterproofs, sunhats, sun cream and lots of drinks.

The Maize Maze is situated at Mount Farm, which was well signposted. It is a working farm which you drive through to get to the parking area. Parking is free.

First of all, adjacent to the car park area, there are some free activities.

Ideal to explore and keep your group entertained should the weather ‘turn’. There was an indoor and outdoor play area, pedal go-karts, a trampoline, even a mini-maze for those who don’t want to walk far. But we had come for the main attraction so, not letting the other activities distract my explorers, we all agreed to go for it, and get lost!

We paid our entrance fee and were given a flag, an option to buy a maze map (in a sealed envelope at £1) and a clue sheet. The flag is in case things get too much and you really are lost; you wave your flag and the helper, who is permanently situated at a lookout point, ‘guides’ you to freedom. I seriously recommend you buy a map or you may not emerge at the exit for a week! The clue sheet is this year’s challenge. You find ten pointers hidden in the maze, each with a question. The completed answer sheets can then be entered into a prize draw.

And so the adventure begins…I carried a little rucksack full or

drinks and energy snacks; my son had the map and was chief navigator and my daughter led with the flag. The walking was quite bumpy in places (it is farmland), so sensible footwear is necessary.

Halfway through, when we had got six out of the ten clues, we needed a break. We navigated our way back to the entrance and found the main play area and a number of picnic tables. I fetched our lunch and we rested our feet for a while.

After lunch we ventured in to the maze again to find the final clues. We were getting the hang of it now and we actually discovered the last pointers quite easily.

We emerged from the maze at the exit, victorious in our efforts. To celebrate we had a delicious homemade ice cream from the farm shop. There was time for some of the extra activities although we decided not to try the mini-maze; we had seen enough maize for one day!

Food, drink and ice cream prices were reasonable and the toilets were basic but clean. Some families had chosen to split themselves up, with one parent looking after the younger ones in the play area, while the other was in the maze with the older ones.

All in all it was a fantastic day out, definitely made better by the sunshine and a great way of spending quality time with the children.

We’re going again this year, go on, I dare you. Go and get lost!

This year the Maze opens daily 10.00am – 5.00pm Friday 18th July until Sunday 7th September, followed by weekends for the rest of September. There are some Friday nights being special torch-light nights. More details are on the website.

Fun 4 Families

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge for children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice – fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books just as long as they are borrowed from the library – during the holidays. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at any one of our local libraries from the end of

June onwards and all materials are absolutely free. The start

date for the Summer Reading Challenge will be 1th July and will

run until September. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all school children and

is designed for all reading abilities. Our Rossendale libraries will work with local schools and give

out information to encourage children to take

part, also the Early Years settings for pre-schoolers.

This year’s theme – Mythical Maze, challenges

children aged four to eleven to find their way around a labyrinth

that introduces them to fantastical creatures, collecting stickers of each character along the way.

Head to your local Rossendale library during the summer holidays and enrol. It’s completely free and anybody can take part.If you’re a parent or carer then take a look at the Reading Agency Family Leaflet to find out more and join them on their Facebook page for all the latest news.Children can chat, get reading recommendations and enter competitions on the Summer Reading Challenge website. If you’re a teacher take a look at the resources available to help you support children’s reading for pleasure.

Anne Sarrag, Summer Reading Challenge director for The Reading Agency, says: “Mythical Maze is all free fun, which is top news for parents. So mums, dads and carers, pop down to your local library and find out more about what supporting activities are happening in the area; and help your children discover a love of stories this summer whilst they

maintain and develop their reading skills over the summer holidays. ”

Sarah McIntyre, the illustrator of Mythical Maze, is a British-American illustrator and writer of children’s books and comics. Sarah was awarded the Sheffield Children’s Book award for Best

Picture Book and Overall Winner for her illustrations in the book Morris the

Mankiest Monster in 010, which also won the

Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award 010. She says: “A group of kids at Leith Library brainstormed some

hilarious, often outrageous, ideas for local how to draw our mythical creatures, and I was able

to bring some of their ideas into the drawings. It’s vitally important

that children are engaged with reading and I hope the Mythical Maze will inspire many more children to take up The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge with libraries next summer.”

Once again this year, children’s publishers are supporting the Summer Reading Challenge, and there are also large print Summer Reading Challenge materials available for visually impaired children, or visually impaired parents/carers; thanks to the support of the RNIB National Library Service.

Libraries across Rossendale are getting ready to introduce children to a fantastical world of legend and mythology that will keep them reading throughout the school summer

holidays .... with Mythical Maze, the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge™ run by independent charity The Reading Agency.

Primary schools in England are currently sharing an extra £150m per year

for sports education. This ring-fenced funding became effective in September 2013, and will continue until 2020.

This funding, worth approximately £8,000 per school with an extra £5 top-up per pupil, is allocated directly to primary school Head Teachers, but it must be used to improve the provision of P.E and school sport in general; a continuation of the sporting legacy of the Olympics.

Not only is sport considered a means of promoting good healthy life-styles in our children, it also has an important part to play in building confidence and a sense of achievement. According to Change4Life, the increase in sporting activities in schools can ‘have a

significant impact on many whole school priorities such as behaviour, attendance and attainment’.

The fund was established after repeated warnings about childhood obesity and a general lack of exercise in primary school-aged children. Also, there have been repeated calls to improve school sport, with Ofsted warning that there is too little strenuous exercise in PE lessons. A cross-party Education Select Committee also reported that many schools lacked the facilities needed for youngsters to get involved in sport.

This money is currently, and should be, being spent on improving sports lessons and improving the standard of these sessions; paying for specialist coaching or equipment or helping to set up after-school clubs. The PE funding should also assist with the cost of additional support for children who usually receive extra help in class but not after school. This should mean that

after school sports clubs have become more inclusive and all children should now be able to enjoy the activities.

In order to ensure all schools explain how the funding is making a positive impact, Ofsted will be monitoring the effect of this funding on primary PE and school sport.

It is hoped that these improved sports activities and clubs help young children develop a sense of belonging and improve their confidence as well as competence as they grow as young people.

Very few people will deny that sport is essential in encouraging children to be active, helps demonstrate a healthy lifestyle, assists in developing friendships and above all else….. lets them have fun!

Here comes the school summer holiday. Day after day of time to

fill with activities and good quality time with the kids... Yey! Wait! Do I hear some boos?

Some parents look forward to spending time with their children over the holidays and want to make sure it’s as positive as possible. Do you want to strengthen what you do best and further your skills in understanding your child in order to help bring out their best and enhance your family life? We may be able to help.

For others life’s not so rosy. Do you dread trying to sort out childcare arrangements and think of hundreds of things to do to keep your children entertained, to reduce the risk of temper tantrums and tears?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! A survey commissioned by Hobbycraft in 01 of 000 parents found 40% dreaded the summer holidays and 47% stated that they find it hard to keep their children entertained for the whole summer.

Spending more time with your children can highlight issues that you have tried to push to the back of your mind e.g. when you have the time and energy, you’ll try getting them to bed on time (and staying in bed!), eating their greens, playing nicely etc. etc. For many parents the list is endless and may seem that any time you have off from your ‘job’ is going to be spent doing the ‘jobs’ you may not have had the

time, energy or inclination to sort out. Relishing that opportunity, are you?

Parenting is hard and tiring work that can be rewarding for some, at times. What would a job advertisement read like for parenting, I wonder? What would the working hours be like, or the bonus package? What would the training manual look like? How many of us get training for motherhood?

Would you like help to strengthen what you do best and learn new ways to better your skills as a parent? Would you love to ‘pick the brains’ of a trained, experienced, clinical psychologist? Someone who is non-judgmental in her approach and has a genuine desire to support others to be the best version of themselves as parents and further develop their understanding of their child? If you do then why not pop along to one of the family focused workshops that I am hoping to facilitate in Rossendale?

We’re hoping to run a series of five sessions:

Strengthen Positive Relationships with Your ChildrenChild-Centered Play Encouraging Positive Behaviour Helping Your Children Build Self-EsteemWho Cares for You? - Managing the Demands of Parenthood

You can choose to come to however many you wish, although coming to the series in this order would be most helpful.

Groups are open to anyone who wants to improve their parenting skills, as well as develop new ways

•••

to understand family life, children’s behaviour and, most helpfully, manage potential challenges and nurture positive relationships. Who wouldn’t want that? Sessions are open to parents and carers of children aged of -11 years. Groups will last one hour and have between 15-0 participants. They will cost £8.50 an hour per person. They will be fun, informal and informative. No one will be forced to do anything they do not want to do. We have availability to run groups on a weekday evening and Saturday mornings.

There will be time at the end of sessions for informal chat with anyone who would like to ‘pick my brains’ as well as have a well-deserved brew and slice of cake. My company has a great network of professional associates e.g. a children’s nurse and a health visitor and a primary school teacher. They will be invited to certain sessions to offer advice and guidance too. We are really sorry but we can’t offer a crèche facility so we cannot accommodate children.

I offer individual therapeutic sessions and consultation so if you can’t make our groups and would still like support please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Some of you may be wondering about your children starting a new school after the summer and may like support managing this transition effectively; we may be able to help.

We visited Spaceport with Lily, age 9 and Eliza, age 4, during

recent school holidays. Lily had been learning about space and the planets at school and was very keen to find out more. It is an easy drive from Rossendale and there is plenty of free parking on site.

On entering Spaceport you are given the option to double up your tickets with a trip on the Mersey Ferry and / or the World War U-boat story. We decided to stick with just Spaceport on this occasion but if you had a full day you could easily have time to visit the other attractions as well.

Even though it was the school holidays, Spaceport didn’t feel overcrowded and this may be due to the fact that admission is staggered to enable everyone to see the displays properly. Spaceport’s leaflet says “Imagine a whole galaxy under one

roof, where learning about space has never been so much fun.” This is a fair reflection of the exhibitions, displays and interactive attractions that you work your way around.

The first area is a showcase of significant

dates, historical facts and experiments which gets you in the mood for finding out how and why space is the way it is. There are lots of levers to pull, buttons to press and timed computer challenges. Then it was time for a ride on the Supersonic Space Simulator which was great fun and enjoyed by all of us. This is only available at certain times so make sure you don’t miss it.

We also liked the 60o Space Dome Planetarium. You recline in the large seats and watch an astronaut’s journey through space. Again this is only available at certain times. You can wander around the rest of Spaceport at your own speed. We saw the world’s largest robotic telescope and learned lots of interesting facts such as the average distance of the earth from the sun is ninety three million miles. Something I didn’t know beforehand!

When we visited there was a Time Travellers Exhibition on for a limited period. This included a Tardis, Cybermen and Daleks, so really good for all Dr Who fans.

As it was the school holidays there were also additional drawing and stencilling activities available free of charge.

There is the usual gift shop and Spaceport also runs children’s birthday parties.

A family ticket for Spaceport ( adults and children) costs £0.50 which we felt was a reasonable price. The site is wheelchair and pram accessible. We enjoyed the visit and the children definitely found out a lot about space. I wouldn’t take children under the age of four as even though they are free, it is aimed at school age children.

If you chose to, you can start your Spaceport

experience with a trip on a Mersey ferry!

Mersey Ferries is a must do North West attraction and the only way to see and enjoy Merseyside and Liverpool’s iconic waterfront and UNESCO world heritage site.

From the decks of the legendary Mersey Ferry visitors on the 50-minute cruise will discover the well-loved legacy of Liverpool and the River Mersey, with its musical and maritime past. Visitors can ‘Hop On & Hop Off’ at each terminal and combine their trip with attractions and hidden gems on both sides of the river.

All sorts of problems can arise, like being split up from lifelong friends and suddenly turning from being the oldest in school to the oldest over the course of the summer holidays. Then there’s the added pressure you’ll be expecting. After building a foundation for your education at Primary, you’ll be assessed in every subject before moving up to serious stuff like GCSE’s and A levels. It’s all a little bit daunting, not to mention the vast difference

between the two education systems. Taking all this into account, it’s hard to even contemplate the importance and growing imminence of this school change.

This is how I felt going through what you’re going through now. There’s stress and there’s worry, but there’s also excitement. After many years in the Primary education system, a change is very refreshing, and if you do have uncontrollable nerves, take a step back and think about

the millions of people who have done this before and come out the other end unscathed. While you would have heard this said many times when looking around schools, realise that it’s true: it’s amazing how quickly you adapt to your new surroundings. I only remember getting lost one time in my first few weeks of Secondary School, and it was along with the rest of my new class. We all looked for our room together, and had a laugh about it afterwards. It’s a good idea for you and a group of friends to stick together when walking from class to class at first, to avoid getting lost by yourself, but even that isn’t likely to happen. Schools are designed to be navigated easily, and pretty soon yours will be like a second home. Plus, it’s most likely they’ll equip you with a map to get you started anyway, not that

you’ll need it for long.Personally, when I moved to my

new school, not many from my old one came with me. Whether this is the case for you or not, it’s important to mix with others as soon as you feel comfortable. I’ve made some friends for life who I didn’t even know a year and a half ago, while still keeping the old ones.

Another important piece of advice I’d give to you is to take any opportunity that comes your way, because you never know where it may lead. This is probably something you’ve heard said many times before, but really consider it for a second. The most interesting people you’ll meet are the ones with many stories to tell. They’re also the people who get higher acclaim in job and University applications, which you’ll have to think about sooner than you’re

probably expecting. From the get-go, if a notice comes up on your class board for an extracurricular opportunity, apply, because it never does you any harm, and most of the time, you’ll be surprised at where it leads you. I’ve tried to follow this advice, and so far, it’s working. Joining various clubs and applying for different schemes has led me to many interesting opportunities, including writing this article.

All I would say, is I’ve had such a great time in Year Seven, learnt many things, and done many things I’ll be talking about for years to come, and any inhibitions I had feel miles away now that I’m here. It’s the same for everyone I know and it’ll be the same for you. So just have fun and trust your instincts, because this next year will be one of the best of your life.

new school, not many from my old one came with me.

Authorised and Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority,

No matter how hard we try, we cannot always avoid having accidents.

Driving at the right speed, watching where we walk and even having the right training at work cannot always prevent the inevitable from happening.

There is no embarrassment or shame in having an accident, it’s just a fact of life. We can help people who have suffered personal injury and financial loss due to an accident, by taking away the stress and anxiety of bringing a claim.

Should I Make A Claim? It is purely a personal matter whether

you decide to bring a claim but it is not just financial loss that needs to be considered. One of the main considerations when deciding whether to bring a claim is the extent and length of your injury. Think to the future; will the injury affect you or your family in 5-10 years’ time? Is there a permanent disability / problem? People often regret not making a claim when those injuries flare up or get worse. If in doubt, seek advice because there are time limits to bringing a claim.

Remember, it is FREE for us to assess your claim and give initial advice

Do I Need To Use A Solicitor? The Law Society recently published

documentation to confirm that you are likely to recover - times more compensation using a Solicitor than trying to claim directly from an insurer.

It is very important to have your personal injury claim assessed by a qualified Solicitor and not by a claims company or middle man. Just remember: a Solicitor is NOT allowed to cold call, so rest assured- those telephone calls you get about your accident are not from qualified Solicitors!

Should I get a second opinion? If you have had a potential accident

claim rejected by a Solicitor, make sure you seek a second opinion. We have taken on many claims rejected or closed by other Solicitors and reached a successful outcome. It does make you wonder how many have taken initial advice and given up.

Page 29: The Scallywag - Summer 2014

I will be brutally honest with you. I don’t come from a camping family. The closest

thing I’d ever got to the Great Outdoors was a static caravan in Wales when I was aged six.

That was until I was and my boyfriend, now husband, convinced me to spend a week in the Lake District with him in a tent.

Never again! I lasted all of one night. I lay there terrified that I was being crawled on by mini beasts and crossed legged because I refused to tramp through a pitch black field with nothing but a torch to light the way to the toilet block. I was damned if I was going in the bushes!

As I unzipped my sleeping bag the next morning, I realised I was covered in dew and given that there was no handy electrical socket for my hairdryer, I would be spending the day bearing an uncanny resemblance to the farmer’s scarecrow in the neighbouring field.

“We’re going to a B&B,” I announced. And that was that, I had not entertained the idea of camping since.

Then last year, now married with three children, it dawned on me that my fears and preferences for home comforts may be depriving my own children of some all-important life experiences.

I wanted my kids to climb trees, sit round camp fires, get mucky, connect with nature and enjoy their childhood but I still couldn’t face another night in a tent.

So, after hours of trawling the internet, looking at yurts and tepees, I stumbled upon The Dandelion Hideaway – luxury canvas cottages located in the Spinney Field, a picturesque five acre plot in the heart of a working Leicestershire farm.

It offered comfortable beds, a wood burning fire, vintage furnishings, a flushing loo and a roll top bath all under canvas. Step outside and you’re confronted with miles of countryside. Now, that’s the kind of camping I can relate to, I thought.

We booked for three nights in August and I can honestly say it was one of the best family holidays we’ve ever had.

No television, no radio, no computer games (and no hairdryer)… just quality time together as a family.

We played outside for hours, enjoyed family meals cooked on the wood burning stove, collected eggs each morning from the farm’s chickens, visited the goats, groomed the Shetland ponies, explored the surrounding fields and woodland on long walks, watched the sunset, gazed at the stars and talked to each other – simple activities that we often don’t do enough of when at home.

It really is a nature lover’s paradise with skylarks, kestrels, hawks, tawny and barn owls all resident along with an active badger sett nearby which can be viewed from a hide.

There is now also a chance to learn bushcraft including skills such as making fire and building a shelter. Move over Ray Mears.

There are lots of attractions nearby too but we enjoyed the peace and quiet so rarely wandered further than the nearest village.

As we left the farm, Crowded House’s ‘Private Universe’ started playing on the car stereo and I couldn’t help thinking, that’s what childhood should be like.

The Dandelion Hideaway, run by John and Sharon Earp, is a real idyll. My children have not stopped talking about ‘Farmer John’ since. We enjoyed it so much that we’re heading back this year.

In Australia protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays is a part of

everyday life. ‘Slip, slap, slop’ is a daily mantra – that’s slip on a t-shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some sunscreen. We might not be lucky enough to enjoy the same climate as those Down Under but taking care to protect ourselves and our families from the sun is just as important wherever you might be.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and the number of people who get it is increasing. Most skin cancers are caused by damage from UV (ultraviolet) rays in sunlight.

There are more than 75,000 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year in this country. The number of cases has almost tripled since the early 1980s and, worryingly, more than ,00 people die from skin cancer here each year. In fact, there are more skin cancer deaths in the UK than in

Australia, even though Australia has more cases of the disease.

Young skin is particularly delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children should be protected from it and babies under six months old should be kept out of direct sunlight, especially

around midday. SunSmart is the UK’s national skin

cancer prevention campaign, run by Cancer Research UK.

Heatwave warnings for this Summer! Be SunSmart

Tips for protecting children in the sun:

Remember you can burn in the UK – The British sun is quite capable of burning your child. Take extra care at home as well as abroad.Use shade – Keep babies in complete shade: under trees, umbrellas, canopies or indoorsCover them up – Dress children in cotton clothing that is baggy, close weave and cool. Oversized T-shirts are good for covering most of their skin.Use dry clothing – Remember that wet clothing stretches and can lose up to half of its UV protection – put children in dry clothing after playing in water.Protect shoulders and necks – Don’t put children in vest tops or sundresses if they are spending a lot of time outdoors – shoulders and backs of necks get easily burned.Wear sunglasses – Buy good quality, wraparound sunglasses for children, as soon as they can wear them. Sunglasses don’t have to be expensive brands, but toy ones can do more harm than good.Find hats they like – Encourage children to wear hats with brims, especially if they are not wearing sunglasses. The wider the brim, the more skin will be shaded form the sun.Use sunscreen wisely – Apply factor 15+ sunscreen before children go outdoors. Then reapply often to be sure of good coverage. Don’t forget their shoulders, nose, ears, cheeks and tops of their feet.Remember sunscreen washes off – Always use waterproof factor 15+ sunscreen when children are swimming or playing outdoors with water. Reapplying after towelling.Don’t forget school times – Remember playtimes and lunch breaks on summer school days too. Give a child a hat to wear and, if they can’t apply sunscreen at school, cover their exposed skin with factor 15+ before they go.
