SANDERSON ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

Tyreck Knox ATHLETE 1991-1995

HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2013

Tyreck Knox (SHS Class of 1995) was an outstanding basketball player who

was the Cap Seven Conference Player of the Year as a junior and as a senior.

He helped the Spartans earn three consecutive regular season conference

championships. The Spartans were the 1992-93 Cap Five Champs under

Coach Tom Kinkelaar and the 1993-94 and 1994-95 Cap Seven Champs under

Coach Doug Benton.

Knox led the Spartans in scoring and rebounding as a junior but would not

rest on those laurels. He had a stellar year as a senior. He was named to the

Holiday Festival All-Tournament team. He led the Spartans to a 19-9 record

while leading the team with 12.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. He scored

the winning bucket at the buzzer in the sectional finals at Sanderson to defeat

Garner 58-57. That victory propelled the Spartans to meet undefeated Rose

High School in the regional semifinals at Minges Coliseum at East Carolina

University. The Spartans played a great game but lost a heartbreaker, 63-61.

Tyreck was selected to play in the NCCA East-West All-Star Game in the

summer of 1995.

As a collegian, Tyreck played basketball for one year at Lenior Community

College before transferring to Campbell University. After a red-shirt year at

Campbell, Knox played for the Camels under Coach Billy Lee. In three

seasons he played in 62 games, started 30, pulled down 154 rebounds,

blocked 42 shots, had 33 steals, and averaged 4.3 points per game.

Tyreck graduated from Campbell in 2000 with a degree in Trust Management with a minor in Financial

Planning. He has been with BB&T in Greensboro since graduation. He and his wife, Ingrid, are expecting

their first child in July.

HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2013

Sanderson High School opened in 1968 with three full classes of students in grades 10 through 12. Since construction on the building ran well behind schedule, the entire Sanderson student-body attended classes simultaneously with the Broughton students on the Broughton campus until Thanksgiving. Students and faculty who were there at the time still tell stories about the controlled chaos that took place during the transition. With students from three full classes assigned to Sanderson, the school╆s athletic program was popular from the very beginning even though there weren╆t as many sports or junior varsity team for boys as there are today and girls╆ sports were just getting started. Sometime around the fourth year of Sanderson╆s existence ゅなひばな-72), a group of fathers of football players who knew each other from friendships built through youth and junior high football started talking about pooling their resources to help the Sanderson athletic program ‒ especially the football program ‒ gain success. New schools with new programs always have needs ‒ financial needs and manpower needs - and this group of dads wanted to help address them. Three gentlemen who were reportedly among the ╉dreamers╊ during this time were Ralph Heres, Bob Hawkins, and Sonny Shaffer. Visits to other schools that had healthy boosters clubs helped shape the plan for Sanderson. By the next year (1972-73) the Sanderson Athletic Club was up and running and had a constitution and by-laws. As best as can be determined, Bob Hawkins was the first president of the club. Ralph Heres was the instigator and brains behind the first fundraiser ‒ a car raffle ‒ designed to raise a profit of $4000 to purchase a Universal weight machine. The car was presented just before Christmas of 1972 and the weight machine was in place for all athletes and physical education students to use before the end of the school year. It is impossible to be certain about giving credit to precisely the right group of ╉Founders╊ forty years after the fact┻ We have sought and found some documentation that makes the history of the club apparent. Unfortunately much of the earliest history is not documented. We have done a considerable amount of research by interviewing people who played a part or who were the spouses or children of those people. To any deserving ╉Founders╊ we may have missed, we apologize.

It took very little time for the club to grow from a football-centric group of dads to the all-sports boosters club that the constitution and by-laws intended it to be. Parents of students who played other sports got involved. Moms joined dads on committees. The committee system became the vehicle to involve many people. Only workers needed to apply to be on a committee. There were plenty of willing volunteers, so those who didn╆t work were replaced!

Some of the hard-working and influential leaders of the club during the first ten years of the club were Joe Brueck, George

Coats, Bob Hawkins, Ralph Heres, Gene Lilley, Harry Marchant, Max Powell, Sonny Shaffer, Bill Touchberry, and Jerry

Weekman. Some of them were club officers, some of them were not. All of them played crucial roles that helped establish the Sanderson Athletic Club as an integral part of the culture of Sanderson High School and planted seeds that enabled the club to grow to what it is today ‒ a valued partner that enhances the athletic experience for every student-athlete in every sport at the school. At the time of their induction, Joe Brueck and Bill Touchberry are the only two men who are still alive. All ten of them left their mark on Sanderson. There is little doubt that they would all be proud to see the fruits of their labor ‒ a vibrant present-day Sanderson Athletic Club.

This photo was taken in December のぶぴは in Ralph and Collie Heres╆ kitchen┻ It was taken on the occasion when the winner of the car raffle (a Toyota) was invited to the house

along with members of the Sanderson Athletic Club and their Sanderson student-athletes

for the presentation of the car. The gentleman who won the car is in the tuxedo, just

right of center.

Believe it or not, Sanderson had a senior class the year it opened in 1968-69.

Sanderson was a three year high school for the first 14 years. Ninth graders began attending Sanderson and the other Wake County high Schools

for the first time in 1982-83.

The Sanderson Athletic Club began its Letter Jacket program in 1982-83 and its Sponsorboard program in 1990-91.

Sanderson has had three athletic directors since it opened. Jim Brown was the director for 14 years, Bob Catapano was the director for 28 years,
