The Salzburg Orchestra Soloists

Great music for a small ensemble

“The performance of each solo musician, completely exposed in such a small ensemble, was remarkable“

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Founded in 2005, the Salzburg Orchestra Soloists (SAOS) are all members of major Austrian or German orchestras. Until 2007, the ensemble performed under the name of "Salzburg Soloists".

In the center of the artistic work are symphonies of the Classical and Romantic music era, that are performed as edited versions by solo artists. Also, a wide repertoire of music selections of classical, romantic and above all the 20th century - here specifically written for solo occupied Chamber Music Ensemble of the IGNM-founder of 1922 - is a great musical concern of The Salzburg Orchestra Soloists. SAOS – SYMPHONIC With the 2012/2013 season, the Salzburg orchestra soloists also perform in the size of a symphony orchestra under the name of SAOS-SYMPHONIC. To provide an exceptional ensemble, the main cast of the Salzburg orchestra soloists is enhanced by equally ambitious colleagues from Austrian and German tradition orchestras, who can look back on many years of orchestra experience. So the soloists follow the requests and needs of organizers to offer the subtle sound idea, the dynamic way to make music and not least the positive professional attitude - that the public has noticed very well in recent years in numerous concerts of the Salzburg Orchestra Soloists - also in the occupation of a symphonic orchestra.

Excelent Chambermusic-Ensemble

Salzburg Orchestra Soloists open the Festival de Nerja - 17.07.2012 It was a long program with which the 53d Festival de la Cueva de Nerja opened the day before yesterday. There are six different performances to see this week from Tuesday to Sunday. The first concert has been played by the Chamber Ensemble "Salzburg Orchestra Soloists", consisting of 12 instrumentalists. The instrumentation of which varied from a trio to the complete instrumentation as needed for the pieces. The long program, of which we spoke at the beginning, was not only characterized by its length, but also through various changes of the stage - Lecterns, lights, instruments. (...) The Salzburg Orchestra Soloists are an excellent ensemble, the existence as soloists has been proved especially in the brilliance of the bassoonist Philip Tutzer and saxophonist Peter Rohrdorfer and the precision of the double bass player Hermann Stützer and the spectacular play of the marimba played by Andreas Steiner. The pieces have been all composed in the 20th Century and reflected both, the modernity and the tradition. Moreover, different aesthetics have been applied, such as the famous "Scaramouche" by Mihaud. Finally Piazzolla could be heard, the late Argentine composer, with "Liber Tango". After a fulminate applause an encore concluded concert.

Eltville 28th of August 2010 – Parish Church St. Markus Program: Joseph Haydn Symphony No, 105 Hob. I/105 in B-flat major “Sinfonia Concertante“ Ludwig v. Beethoven Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 ************************* Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 “Italian”

Gripping and vital 30.08.2010 – ERBACH By Richard Hörnicke - Wiesbadener Tagblatt (German newspaper)

RHEINGAU SUMMER Salzburger Solisten (Salzburg Soloists) in Erbach Two years ago there was unanimous enthusiasm after the guest performance of the Salzburg Orchester Solisten (Salzburg Orchestra Soloists). Once again, at this year’s performance at the so-called “Burghofspielen” in the Parish Church St. Markus in Erbach, the ensemble has been welcomed with rousing approbation even from the beginning with their interpretation of van Beethoven’s First Symphony in C major. This first symphonic work by the composer still reveals the influence of Mozart and Haydn, yet one can feel the “claw of the lion”. The soloists made this “claw” be heard evidently in the extremely tight, urgent intensive and resolutely gripping accentuation, a kind of musical design, which completed the cantabile evoked Andante. The trio generated a voluminous minuet, giving the finale remarkable contour. An interpretation of Beethoven, which one can hardly imagine to be more gripping. Thus the direction was given. Also, Haydn’s Symphony Concertante No. 105 in B flat major was determined by this well-defined and vital way of making music, according the Andante with swing and sublime implementation. In perfect harmony, the soloists orchestra conductor Markus Wolf (violin), Florian Simma (cello), Kai Rapsch (oboe) and Philip Tutzer (bassoon), accorded the final movement, with its recitative hints, compelling format. In the end, they performed Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Fourth Symphony in A major, the so-called “Italian”. You could feel the work’s spirited “Italianity”, tangy and fresh as a summer night. Throughout their performance, jubilant applause, bravos and rhythmic clapping could be heard. To finish the show, the excellent Salzburg guests shone with their encore, a polka by Johann Strauss.

Diabelli Sommer Mattsee 30th of July 2010 Program: Musical direction: Kai Röhrig First violin: Judith Steiner Mezzo-soprano: Michaela Selinger Richard Wagner Wesendonck-Lieder

Adaptation by Andreas N. Tarkmann Instrumentation for high voice and chamber orchestra

************************* Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 1 in D major “Titan”

Adaptation: Klaus Simon/Johannes Krall

Mahler in the magnifying glass DIABELLI SUMMER MATTSEE / GUSTAV MAHLER FOR THE 150th BIRTHDAY 01/08/10 BY HEIDEMARIE KLABACHER The First Symphony by Mahler performed with a string quintet? It’s possible! Gustav Mahler’s Symphony in D major was recited at the Collegiate Church Mattsee in a chamber orchestra version: no oddity, but an exciting and enlightening experience of Mahler at its best. “The chamber orchestra version of the violinist and composer Johannes Krall does not mean to rival the original, but a chance to hear the work in special clarity in more intimate spaces,” writes Gottfried Franz Kasparek, the artistic director of Diabelli Summer Mattsee, in the almanac. So much modesty would not have been necessary. It was simply an electrifying concert experience: from the mysterious sounds of the slow introduction and gluttonous energy bursts of the first movement, to the famous “Frère Jacques” canon in a minor key and the touching song about the Lindenbaum in the third set, up to the final to apotheosis. Kai Röhrig conducted on Friday (30.7.) the “Salzburg Orchester Solisten” (Salzburg Orchestra Soloists) in the Collegiate Church Mattsee. Precise in detail, intense in the cohesion, pressing forward in the attitude and “naturally” transparent in the sound: these are the coordinates of the show. It was very appealing to follow every voice and trace musical developments at each stage. As if you read a score without a score. The ensemble consisted of simple wind instruments, percussion, harp and the string quintet. The fascinating, indeed striking element of this performance, in the small ensemble, was actually not necessarily the transparency, but the richness of tone and intensity. It must have been a physical and mental effort for the musicians. In addition to the clever set by Johannes Krall, the venue might have also made its contribution. The Collegiate Church Mattsee has a music-friendly acoustic without being particularly reverberant: a space that “carries”, but where the sounds can develop fully. In fact the difficult Scherzo with its “Landler” always remained a big symphony set, but never turned into (what could be expected) “Tanzl” or “Schrammelmusik” (a style of Austrian, especially Viennese folk music). Again and again the irony of Mahler seemed to tilt even into delusion, which was very exciting. At the other end of the scale, there was energy and power rather than pure volume. It was an excellent achievement to keep the balance like Kai Röhrig did and how the musicians knew to adapt to these challenges. Also, a memorable experience in chamber orchestra instrumentation were Richard Wagner’s “Wesendonck-Lieder”. The soloists from Salzburg did not perform the famous version by Felix Mottl, but the even more concentrated contemporary version from 2003 by Andrew N. Tarkamnn. Michaela Selinger guided the audience, with her strong and finely woven mezzo, into the highly emotional sound worlds of Wagner and his (presumably) absent lover.

************************* Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 60 in C major, Hoboken I/60 “Il Distratto“

Impressive concert Murtaler Zeitung (Austrian newspaper), 3rd of December 2009

The orchestra “Salzburg Orchester Solisten”, a chamber ensemble consisting of renowned Austrian and German orchestral musicians, produced a brilliant performance. The first part of the concert was devoted to representatives of classical modernism. In “Ciranda das sete notas” by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, in particular Phillip Tutzer shone as a bassoonist. On the occasion of the Haydn anniversary year, the Symphony in C major, Hob I: 60 “Il Distratto” by Joseph Haydn was featured as the grand finale.

Dornbirn 4th of October 2009 – Kulturhaus (House of Culture) Dornbirn Program: Gioachino Rossini Serenade in E-flat major “per piccolo complesso“ Joseph Haydn Symphony No, 105 Hob. I/105 in B-flat major “Sinfonia Concertante“

************************* Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 “Italian”

Vorarlberger Nachrichten (Austrian newspaper) 06.10.2009

Great music for a small ensemble "Salzburg Orchester Solisten" with Florian Simma from Dornbirn offered a perplexing concert experience. What does a classic-romantic repertoire sound like if you reduce the performers to a minimum? With such an amazing sound experience, the SAOS knew how to fill the audience with enthusiasm at the season opener of Dornbirn Klassik in the Kulturhaus (House of Culture). Mendelssohn’s exuberant “Italian Symphony”, which one normally hears in the form of an approximately 80-strong orchestra with about 50 strings, was played here with only 14 musicians. The clever arrangement by Johannes Krall reduces with a sense of proportion, sets free structures, which often go unnoticed in the original, while moving Mendelssohn’s work close to his “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” A fascinating performance!

Close-knit troupe It certainly requires such a close-knit troupe, as concertmaster Markus Wolf has gathered around him and which he guides in order to endure such an experiment without prejudice. The orchestra performs without a conductor. Thus everyone will eventually be a soloist. The fact that Florian Simma from Dornbirn, who has recently become a solo cellist with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, is part of the ensemble, evokes Dornbirn’s local patriot pride. The orchestra performed a serenade by Rossini and Haydn's demanding Sinfonia Concertante in B flat, in which in addition to Wolf and Simma, also Kai Rapsch (oboe) and Phillip Tutzer (bassoon) were added as the technically accomplished Concertino to the minimized “orchestra”. With Strauss’ “Tritsch-Tratsch”-Polka as encore finished a short, but eventful evening, which also raised questions. How can it be that in Vorarlberg’s largest city, in the only half-full Kulturhaus, less than one percent of the population was interested in such an exciting offer? Cultural Office director Roland Jörg could not have programmed it more attractively.

Personal Word of Prof. Alfred Prinz to Ferdinand Steiner (Former Solo-Clarinettist of the Vienna Philharmonics)

One of the best for the Clarinet-Concert

The first CD of the "Salzburg Orchestra Soloists" has been presented on Sunday, November 26th in the atmospheric column foyer of Petersbrunnhofs. Mozart is the first CD. Fine, as chamber music by audible and yet musically in the best sense come the overture to "La Clemenza di Tito" and the C major Symphony, K. 551, therefore. Ferdinand Steiner, currently one of the best players of

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is another strong argument for include this CD in Christmas gift ideas. So naturally and fluently the piece is not heard very often. Andreas Aigmüllers jazz cadenza sets a subtle current contrast. Nice that in the the Mozart year the most popular pieces of the honored are not only recorded new, but also music is played in a new style and that it is possible to listen to them in a new way.

Fachzeitschrift "Rohrblatt" November 2007

Mozart - mutig und fast neu After 68 minutes of music enjoyment of this CD can be the following noticed: the three works receives the thrifty small cast of fourteen Salzburg Orchestra Soloists very well with five string and all brass items individually occupied instruments including drums creates a gorgeous airy and transparent sound: no Note lost, every voice can be traced to do each cycle of works such as blueprints, each nuance of expression in each instrument is clear.

An example of this, the "Jupiter Symphony" is where to make the implementation of the first movement which often results in a thick tangle votes melody patterns split into individual threads hear how they are not as familiar. The soloist of the clarinet concerto plays on his basset clarinet melodies enchanting and sensitively decorated boldly and imaginatively several repetitions, alternates captivating between almost inaudible pianissimo and powerful Forte, allowed himself while striking rubato that match but lose surprisingly in the third set - in manuscript is a cadence not planned! -Almost two and a half minutes into on its own captivating and technically tricky trip to the jazzy modernism that has to do

with Mozart certainly nothing, but then finds back to the familiar topic, and to the subsequent closing bars. To rediscover often the overused trite, you should quickly acquire this CD and Mozart - well, almost - completely new experience!
