JACKSON, MISSISSIPPIThe Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the

From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank you for all the support

you give to The Salvation Army of the Greater Jackson Metro Area. Without you,

The Salvation Army could not be the hands and feet of Christ to aid the hurting

people of this great community.

Matthew 6:33 instructs us to “Seek first the Kingdom of God…” Since the

Kingdom of God has always been about the hearts and souls of all mankind, this

is what we strive to address here at your Salvation Army. Twenty-four hours a day

and 365 days a year, we meet not only physical but also spiritual needs in an effort

to assist complete healing.

This 2019 Annual Report provides an overview of the many services we offer

to the wonderful people in Rankin, Madison, Hinds, Scott, Copiah, and Yazoo

Counties. God continues to bless this ministry, and we are excited to share with

you the ways in which your support changes lives every single day.

We, along with our amazing staff, Advisory Board, Women’s Auxiliary, Echelon,

and church wish to say thank you again for your continued support of this

amazing ministry!

To God Be the Glory!

Our social services programs strive to provide assistance in the Greater Jackson

Area with dignity and respect to the individuals involved. No one should have

to choose between paying bills and providing food, but this is the unfortunate

reality for all too many. The Salvation Army Jackson Corps provides balanced

and nutritious meals to address the immediate symptoms of food insecurity while

helping to identify and treat its root causes. Over time, this holistic approach to

physical, mental, and spiritual needs helps move many from “hungry” to “fully

healed.”

Additionally, our social services programs offer hope through clothing and/or

furniture vouchers that can be redeemed at our Family Store. We also partner

with Entergy to provide assistance with energy bills for their customers who

currently receive Social Security and/or disability coverage.

Through these social services programs, we hope to bring about change and

healing in the lives of those in need in our community.

Mississippi has one of the highest poverty levels in the nation, and the Jackson

community is no exception. When options are limited, The Salvation Army’s

Center of Hope shines as a beacon of light for men and women with nowhere else

to go.

The center has 82 beds and provides nutritious meals for all residents. However,

it is much more than just shelter and a meal. Community leaders offer financial

seminars, Bible studies, and other life skills classes to give our residents the

knowledge and skills they need to enhance their quality of life.

Residents can receive emergency shelter free of charge for up to ten days while

they search for alternate housing. After ten days of emergency shelter, residents

may be enrolled in our transitional housing program. This extended ministry of

the Center of Hope houses residents on site while giving them long-term case

management. The Center of Hope is just one more way The Salvation Army

strives to be a healing ministry that assists people physically, challenges them

mentally, and transforms them spiritually.

Utilizing programs like our summer day camp, performing arts conservatory,

and developmental sports, we strive to make positive life change for younger

generations that will carry-on into adulthood. By offering theater, dance, and

music lessons families might otherwise be unable to afford and youth athletic

programs, we foster potentially life-changing skills. These programs also show our

boys and girls there are caring adults willing to mentor them and teach them to be

better people, not just better students or athletes.

Our goals to encourage life-long healthy habits and cultivate talent continue

in our summer enrichment program. The Salvation Army Summer Day Camp

focuses on providing physical education and recreational activities in a safe and

fun environment. Campers have meaningful and challenging experiences that

foster active participation and celebrate diverse cultures and abilities.

As part of our multi-generational approach, senior adults gather at our center

three times a week to socialize. To combat the loneliness and loss of independence

that often accompany advanced age, they have fun while empowering themselves

to learn, laugh, and thrive among like-minded friends.

Outside of our Community Center, The Salvation Army summer camp teaches

kids new skills, healthy attitudes, and great values. Camp Hidden Lake in

Lexington, MS, offers sports, music, Bible study, arts, swimming, fishing, and

other activities for school-aged youth in our community.

The Salvation Army offers healing and hope in what can be an especially

stressful time of year. As part of our mission to foster community and fight

hunger, we serve Thanksgiving meals to families, our shelter residents, those with

limited mobility, and the general public. In 2019, we servied over 1,200 meals on

Thanksgiving Day.

Through the generosity of the Jackson community, our Angel Tree program

delivers Christmas magic to children and seniors by putting new clothes and toys

under the tree.

We also partner with the Air National Guard and The Radio People on Flight

to North Pole, where a group of 60 Angel Tree children visit the “North Pole” on

a military aircraft. This is a magical night during which children play games and

receive their Christmas presents directly from Santa Claus and his elves.

Our Red Kettle is a Christmas tradition dating back to 1891 and remains a staple

around the world. Money raised through the Red Kettle is then used to fund our

programs for the following year.

In all holiday endeavors, our priority is to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ

and celebrate Him by serving those in need.

Residents of Mississippi understand the true meaning of community in disaster.

Tornadoes, flooding, and hurricanes are common occurrences in the South, and

nearly everyone has been affected in one way or another.

Officers of The Salvation Army have a saying, “Need knows no season.” This

statement rings especially true in the Southern Territory where natural disasters

often strike without much warning. We take steps to ensure we are ready to jump

into action on short notice. In the past few years, our corps has responded to

national disasters like Hurricanes Irma, Harvey, Florence, and Michael, as well as

floods, tornadoes and other local disasters in our six counties.

It is our mission to serve without discrimination and show the love of Jesus Christ

in everything that we do. Our disaster teams offer food, clothing, shelter and other

basic necessities for survival. Emotional and spiritual care are also available for

those coping with grief, loss and trauma associated with the disaster event. We’re

known for being the first service agency to arrive and the last to leave—committed

to helping people through to the end.

Our Pathway of Hope program provides individualized services to families with

at least one child under 18. This is a long-term program (at least 18 months) that

provides willing families with the tools to become self-sufficient.

No matter the circumstances, be it unemployment, unstable housing, or lack

of education, our goal is to create a stable household and break the cycle of

generational poverty. Participants in this program will work with a case manager

whose sole priority is to help them gain skills needed to be able to take care of

their families’ needs.

Through involvement with Pathway of Hope, families will be introduced to both

Salvation Army and other services that are available within their community that

offer a network of support, a sense of community, holistic programs, and spiritual

guidance. This may include GED classes, resume/interview building skills,

counseling services, financial assistance and more. The path to self-sufficiency can

be a long road but one well worth taking.

Thank you for supporting this organization. Thanks to you, people are continuing

their education, getting job training, learning life skills, and turning their lives

around. Without your continued generosity, The Salvation Army would not be

able to change the lives and hearts of people right here in the Jackson area.

Thanks to your support, thousands were fed, comforted, and counseled after

numerous natural disasters. Underprivileged Mississippi kids were able to attend

Christ-centered after school programs, and a unique summer camp filled with

positive, life-affirming lessons, and thousands of people were not left hungry and

lonely on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Through your generosity, The Salvation Army was able to answer the call to help

the people of central Mississippi in their time of need.

Finally, I am grateful for the anointed, inspired, and dedicated leadership

of the Lyles. We are truly blessed to have them here in Jackson.

May God bless you, your families,

and the mission of The Salvation Army.
