n 1972, St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer entrusted the creation of a new translation of the Bible to the University of Navarre with the hope of making the Holy Bible available to as many Spanish- speaking people throughout the world as possible. The five-volume Sagrada Biblia was published in 2004. It was the work of more than twenty specialists providing a translation from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, as well as comprehensive explanatory introductions and commentaries on the Biblical text. In 2006, Midwest Theological Forum (MTF) proposed the publication of an abridged, one-volume edition of the Sagrada Biblia with shorter commentaries. The University of Navarre agreed to the proposal, and with their permission, the Biblia de Navarra (Edición Popular) was published in March 2008. In keeping with the original goal to provide an inexpensive but quality edition of the Sagrada Biblia to the Spanish-speaking public, many people generously cooperated in the production of the Biblia de Navarra, donating their time, talent, and effort. In addition, to keep the sales price as low as possible, all royalties to the Biblia de Navarra have been waived, and generous donations have been made by various foundations.
