Welcome to St. Katharine’s
A Hidden Urban Oasis
Communal Sitting Area
St. Katharine’s is a hidden urban oasis amidst London’s urban turmoil where people can meet together away from the rush of daily life to discuss, think and plan about matters that concern them. The Foundation is firmly committed to its Christian roots but aims to reach out to the wider society in which we all live.
St. Katharine’s, one of the oldest religious foundations in Great Britain, was founded in 1147 by Queen Matilda, the wife of King Stephen, as a hospital for the poor, outside the walls of the Tower of London. It remained there for 678 years until the construction of St. Katharine Docks in 1825.

Subsequently after 123 years in Regent’s Park, it moved back to East London about one mile from its original 12th century location. Down its long history, the Patronage of the Foundation has been reserved unto the Queens of England. H.M. Queen Elizabeth II is the Foundation’s present Patron.
A Place to Meet
Our modern conference facilities are available for groups of up to 70 people to hire. From small gatherings to large conferences, we have a variety of spaces to suit most events.
Our largest space is The Queen Elizabeth Room which is air conditioned and enjoys fantastic views of our garden. We have six other rooms including the Chapter and Queen Matilda rooms which are located on the ground floor of the Master’s House.

The Chapel
The Chapel was built in 1951 on the site of the bombed parish church together with the residential extension to the Master’s House.
Simple, rectangular and brick-faced, reflecting post-war austerity, it was substantially re-ordered in 2004, in memory of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (Patron from 1953-2002), to create a brighter and lighter interior with its enlarged windows, increase its capacity and flexibility for worship and integrate it with the expanded residential accommodation and garden. The chapel is suitable for some seminars and concerts and has a capacity of 100. Worship takes place daily to which guests are most welcome to attend.
