HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from Hartley Row, a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In the late 1940s and into the 50s playing in the Basingstoke League, the club was successful despite having to play on a farm field with just a small wooden shed; this was Causeway Farm adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding secretary, Fred Cook, who did every job that needed doing. Fred Cook's hand written minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 were discovered after his death and make fascinating reading, including the change of the club colours from blue squares to tange-rine in July 1956. The club moved to its present ground in Green Lane - The Me-morial Ground - in 1953. A pavilion was erected and the team continued to play in the Basingstoke League, and later in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which had replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club ap-pointed Ian Bedford as First Team Man-ager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Dur-ing the 80's these included several nota-ble ex-pros: Mick Travers (from 1980/81

to 1986/87; his other clubs included Reading, Portsmouth and Aldershot); Richard Walden (1985/86 & 1986/87; formerly with Aldershot, Sheffield Wed and Newport County); and Steve Fin-nieston (1985/86 to 1987/88; previously with Chelsea, Cardiff and Sheffield Utd). Within Ian's three years in management, the team gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (1981-82). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-83) and Aldershot Senior Cup (1981-82).

During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, then Secretary and Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted excep-tional hours in the embryo stages of this venture. In 2007-08 under manager

Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division, but 2008-09 ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, fin-ishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 2009-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. A new management team of Neville Roach, assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for 2011-12 and it was a notable season with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was damp-

ened even before the champagne bub-bles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left en masse to join Thatcham Town. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, belief and the introduction of a talented group of play-ers quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row's place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie joined the existing coaching setup and the 2013-14 season started well. There were wins in the FA Cup to set up a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished a cred-itable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new club crest was commissioned, designed by Philippa Bell, incorporating several elements tracing the village back to the 13th century when known as Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", hence the tree and stag motifs. 2014-15 saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier, finishing a

comfortable 9th, after which Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers, with Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manag-er. It was a very eventful 2015-16. After a memorable FA Cup win away at Mer-thyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep in injury time. In the FA Vase, The Row broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual final-ists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points. Promotion, howev-er, was denied due to ground grading. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the 2016-17 season under co-managers Dan Brown-lie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. Pro-pelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Sen-ior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time. To top off a wonderful 2016-17, Luke Tuffs' Youth team won the Hamp-shire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. The team took life at Step 4 in their stride and 2017-18 was to prove even more remarkable. The Row sat within

the top four for much of the season, nev-er dropping below 8th despite the loss of key players to other clubs. The man-agement team responded with some astute signings. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against higher division Gosport Borough and Farnborough be-fore going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists, Bromley FC. As the league campaign risked petering out, the signing of Nic Ciardini helped to keep the momentum going. Hugely im-portant was also the strong central de-fensive partnership of Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. Incredibly, a play-off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cam-bridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and The Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3. The final season highlight was in lifting the Alder-shot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC. Having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons, it's fair to say the club was collectively still pinching itself as the first game kicked off in the Evo-Stik League South Prem-ier South, 2018-19 getting off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win away at Poole Town. Dan Turkington was now co-manager with Anthony Millerick, with Sam Rafique, Keith Benjamin and Mark Hurst joining Head Coach Luke Tuffs on the coaching side. Come late September, Hartley even found themselves top for a week, but sustaining the early results proved diffi-cult. After a spell of poor results, the club found itself briefly in the relegation

zone, but more astute signings stiffened the defence and a superb late run saw Hartley finish 8th on 63 points, a hugely impressive achievement. To remain at the level also required another substan-tial round of ground grading improve-ments which stretched the club and its volunteers to the limits, but that too was achieved by the required deadline. The efforts on and off the pitch means Hart-ley Wintney can truly consider itself a Step 3 club as it prepares for its second season in the Southern League Premier Division. For season 2019/20, Manager Anthony Millerick takes sole charge of team se-lection with Dan Turkington no longer in a position to assist in the capacity of joint manager. After his huge contribu-tion over recent seasons, Head Coach Luke Tuffs departed at the end of 2018/19 to begin a managerial career. Neil Woodyer joins the coaching staff for 2019/20, the back room team com-pleted with the introduction of Sports Therapist Mark Povey. Hartley Wintney Reserves begin a new season in the Suburban League under new manager, Sean Hayes, who captained the A Team in clinching the Aldershot & District Football League Senior Division champi-onship last season. MILLERS

Welcome to everybody connected with Fareham Town for this evening’s Hampshire Cup game.

Today is important on many fronts. Firstly it’s a cup competition that we like and want to succeed in. And after the disappointment of Saturday’s loss it’s vital we get back to winning ways asap after our mini-run of 5 unbeaten came to an end.

After any defeat there is always an in-quest and today presents a few of the lads within the squad the opportunity

to impress, as I will be refreshing the line-up tonight.

Enjoy the match. Looking forward to seeing you all in the bar after the game.

MATCH REPORT: TIVERTON TOWN

Hartley Wintney v Tiverton Town, BetVictor Southern League Prem-ier South, Sat 14th Sept 2019 Report by David Graham

An assured performance from Tiverton Town saw them claim all three points against a subdued Hartley Wintney and keep themselves in the upper reaches of the league.

The visitors had an early chance on 8 minutes when Jordan Bastin and Josh-ua Key combined to set up Tyler Elliott. The winger's accurate shot lacked pow-er and the Row keeper, Luke Williams, saved.

Hartley took the lead on 19 minutes following a good break down the right from Sal Abubakar. The winger's cross was converted from close range by Dean Rule. (1-0).

Tivvy almost pulled level three minutes later when a cross from Key was al-most forced in by Bastin, but Williams just held on to the ball on the goal line. Four minutes later, on 26 minutes, an-other chance for the equaliser came after a slick move between Key and Noah Smerdon set up River Allen. The midfielder was unlucky to see his shot hit the underside of the crossbar.

However, after a period of pressure, Tiverton deservedly equalised on 39 minutes when a corner from Bastin caused a scramble on the line and Hartley's Matt Drage touched the ball into his own net. The Row claimed a foul on keeper Williams but referee Shane Mansfield was unmoved. (1-1)

HT: HARTLEY 1 TIVERTON TOWN 1

It took Tivvy just two minutes to take the lead at the start of the second peri-od. A Hartley free kick on the right into the area was cleared. A quick break

saw Elliott feeding Allen who set up Bastin and he fired home from the edge of the box. (1-2)

On 53 minutess, a free kick for Tivvy saw Joshua Key's effort go just past the post, but the visitors stretched their lead on 62 minutes . A move down the middle created space for Jared Lewing-ton who shot home from the edge of the box with another clinical finish. (1-3)

Hartley came into the game and a Josh Webb corner on 66 minutes saw a headed effort saved by Lewis Williams. The Tivvy keeper was called into action again on 80 minutes when a cross from Nathan Smart found the head of Shane Hollamby who saw his effort saved.

Two minutes from time Key combined with Lewington and the latter's effort brought out a good foot save from Luke Williams. However, the visitors added a fourth goal in the last minute when Key set up River Allen who curled an effort beyond Luke Williams and into the net. [D Graham]

The Row have a break from league football for the next two fixtures. On Tuesday evening they entertain Fare-ham Town in the 2nd Round of the Hampshire Cup. Then next Saturday they return to FA Cup action with a 2nd Qualifying Round match against Chich-ester City.

David spoke with Hartley Wintney Man-ager, Anthony Millerick, after the match.

"For the most part, the play was too long and too central. The score line was about right."

Millers was disappointed Tiverton's opening goal was allowed to stand, but was frank about his side's performance on the day. "I felt the Tivvy opening goal from the corner was a clear foul on Luke Williams. But we did not per-form in the second half and did not fulfil our game plan. We must become mentally stronger for the forthcoming matches."

Hartley Wintney v Spelthorne Sports, The Emirates FA Cup, First Round Qualifying. Sat 7th Sept 19 Report by David Graham

Hartley Wintney progressed into the 2nd Qualifying Round with a comforta-ble win over a workmanlike Spelthorne Sports, who have started their season

well in the Combined Counties League Premier Division and won away at Southall in the previous round.

The Row settled quickly. On 2 minutes Ty Smith set up Tom Bird for a shot which went narrowly over from 20 yards. Two minutes later the visitors put together a decent move. Jake Flat-man crossed to Billy Frost who shot wide. On the quarter hour, good link up down the right between Louie Paget and Nathan Smart saw a cross from the latter find Sal Abubakar. The young winger shot from point blank range and visiting 'keeper Henry Poole - who was to have a very impressive game - brought off an excellent reflex stop.

On 20 minutes, a corner on the right for the 'Spelly' saw a delivery from Billy Frost find the head of Lewis Flatman, whose effort went over the bar.

On 27 minutes the Row should have taken the lead. Paget and Smart again combined well down the right and Smart's cross landed on the head of Mickel Platt. The young striker headed down in classic style but his effort bounced up and over the crossbar.

With 34 minutes on the clock, a Bird corner found Jack Ball who headed back across the goal. Alex Albert rose highest but his close range header brought out another smart, point blank reflex save from Poole. However, the long overdue goal duly arrived three minutes later. Once again Paget and Smart combined well to create a chance for the latter. The Row skipper saw his effort parried by Poole but only into the path of Platt, who tapped home from close range. (1-0)

On 42 minutes, Platt created a chance for Dean Rule, who saw his goal-bound, close range effort again well saved by Poole.

MATCH REPORT: SPELTHORNE SPORTS

Spelthorne were quick out the blocks in the second half, with Jake Flatman try-ing his luck from 20 yards, but he found Luke Williams in the Hartley goal well positioned and he made a comfort-able save. Two minutes later, Abubakar managed to get free on the right and his low shot from a tight angle went across the Spelly goal.

On 54 minutes there was a scrimmage in the Spelly penalty area. Matt Drage forced his way through and saw his effort blocked. Dean Rule was quick onto the rebound but also watched his effort blocked by brave defenders. However, the second goal was only delayed by one minute.

Steven Duff, who made an impact when coming on as substitute, forced his way down the line before setting up Ty Smith. The midfielder saw his fierce drive parried by Poole. Rule was alert and headed the rebound over the stranded goalkeeper. (2-0)

On 61 minutes the visitors almost pulled a goal back. Lewis Flatman cre-ated space for himself on the edge of the penalty area and his effort went narrowly past the post with Williams beaten.

Hartley resumed on the attack and on 70 minutes Duff created a decent chance for Bird, which saw the full back shoot wide. But the Row made the game safe on 75 minutes. A Duff cross caused a scramble in the goalmouth. The ball went to Abubakar who crossed for Bird to fire home from close range. (3-0)

A minute later Platt had a good effort which brought out another save from the outstanding Poole in the Spelly goal, and on 82 minutes Poole was called into action again as Hartley had a chance of a fourth goal. Abubakar

was hauled down just inside the penal-ty area and a penalty kick awarded. After a conflab, Abubakar dusted him-self down but saw his spot kick bring out yet another good stop from Poole.

Hartley move into the next round and the win earns them £4,500 from the FA Cup fund. The draw for the next round will be held on Monday. [D Graham]

David spoke with Hartley manager, Anthony Millerick, after the game.

"We did not play particularly well in the first period but got well on top during the second half and I felt the gulf in class showed itself during that period. This match was always going to be a potential banana skin, being mindful of the tie three years ago. "Steven Duff did well when he came on for the second half," Millers continued, "he gave us an extra dimension. We want a good cup run and we will see what Monday's draw brings."

MATCH REPORT: DORCHESTER TOWN

Dorchester Town v Hartley Wintney, BetVictor Southern League, Premier South. Saturday 31st August 2019 Report by David Graham

Hartley Wintney travelled to Dorset and held off a late rally from Dorchester Town to claim all three points.

The Row started the brighter but it was the Magpies who recorded the first ef-fort on goal after 5 minutes. Billy Lowes was able to deliver a cross from the right and the header from Samuel Lana-han brought out a comfortable save from the well positioned Hartley 'keeper, Luke Williams.

Hartley started to apply a stranglehold in midfield and pressed for the opening goal. On 13 minutes, a crisp move down the right saw Sal Abubakar and Mickel Platt combine to feed Josh Webb, who in turn set up Tom Bird whose effort went close.

Abubakar was at the heart of many Row moves down the right and teamed up well with his two fellow youngsters in attack, Dean Rule and Mickel Platt. Hart-ley forced a number of corners as they dominated proceedings, but were just unable to get the breakthrough.

In a rare Magpies attack on 32 minutes, Antonio Diaz delivered a cross which Lanahan managed to reach and forced a good save from Williams.

The Row resumed on the attack and the pressure finally told on 44 minutes. A Josh Webb corner on the right found the head of Alex Albert at the back post and his header found the net despite the best efforts of Dorch 'keeper, Shane Murphy, to keep it out. (0-1)

Hartley almost doubled the lead on the stroke of half time when Platt chased a

long ball and saw his parting effort go just wide.

HT: DORCHESTER TN 0 HARTLEY 1

Hartley continued where they left off in the first half. On 47 minutes, a fluent move down the left saw Webb and Bird combine well and the latter's cross found Abubakar, who saw his effort go wide. However, the second goal was delayed by just one minute. A left wing corner from Ty Smith found Jack Ball at the back post and his header back across the 'keeper found the net. (0-2)

On 53 minutes, a good run from Dean Rule saw him combine with Abubakar, whose cross found Webb but the mid-fielder shot wide when well placed to score. Six minutes later, another Smith corner on the left again found Ball, whose header was just over the bar.

The Magpies started to edge back into the game, with Thomas Blair giving them an added threat. On 67 minutes, a cross from Kyle Egan for the Dorch on the right found Callum Rose, who brought out a good save from Williams.

On 70 minutes the Row looked to have made the game safe with an excellent goal. Abubakar, coming in from the right, found Jack French. The midfielder laid the ball off to Tom Bird who fired in a fierce shot from 25 yards which went into the top corner of the net, leaving Murphy with no chance of stopping it. (0-3)

There was a long delay ahead of the game resuming as Callum Rose for the Magpies required treatment to a neck injury following a collision with a fellow defender. Rose was eventually able to walk back to the changing room and was replaced by Luke Winsper.

The home side pressed hard to get back

into the match and on 73 minutes a cross from the dangerous Blair was just missed by Tom Bath as it sped across the face of the goal.

Constant pressure from the Magpies was rewarded. Winsper fed Blair on the left who cut in to the penalty area. The substitute made space for a shot and rifled home from 15 yards. (1-3)

The Row almost restored their two goal cushion a minute later when a snap shot from French went just wide.

The home side, buoyed by the goal, piled on the pressure and forced sever-al corners. However, the Row held firm and on 90 minutes Nathan Smart fed Platt, who turned quickly and saw his parting shot well saved by Murphy.

Due to the long injury to Rose, 9 minutes were added. In the last of the added time minutes the Magpies scored a second goal. Egan made good progress down the right and into the Row box. His cross found Bath who shot home from close range.

David spoke with Hartley Wintney man-ager, Anthony Millerick, afterwards.

"I felt for 70 minutes we completely dominated the game. Dorchester played well in the last 20 minutes and put us under some pressure, but it was one of our better performances so far this season and we probably should have won by a greater margin.

"For most of the game we looked solid and played a lot of good football. Sal Abubakar had probably his best game for Hartley and continues to improve apace.

"I was pleased that at long last we con-verted two goals from corners," Millers continued. "The deliveries have been good and we have been unfortunate on occasions not to score."

FAREHAM TOWN FC HISTORY

Fareham Town FC - A History of The Creeksiders There has been organised football in Fareham since the 1880's, but Fareham Town Football Club in its present form was formed in 1946 from an amalgamation of three lo-cal clubs. The new club played initially at Bea-consfield Meadow (now housing) before moving to Bath Lane and progressed from the Portsmouth Senior League to the Hampshire League, reaching the First Division of the latter in 1953. During our time in the Hampshire League the club won every honour within the County - the League on eight occasions including five con-secutive seasons from 1962/3 to 1967/8; the Hampshire Senior Cup was claimed three times, and every other County Cup once.

A successful Sunday side, the Fare-ham Centipedes, won the FA Sun-day Cup in 1974. There are local newspaper records going back to the very early days where the club applied to the local authority in 1946 to move to a pur-pose built sport stadium at the cur-rent location at Cams Alders, but it wasn't until 1975 that the club moved to Cams, and Fareham joined the Southern League in 1979, gaining promotion to the Premier Division in 1982. In 1989, despite achieving 51 points, they were relegated from the Premier Division - still a record for a relegated club. In 1998 the club, for financial rea-sons, made the, at the time, con-troversial decision to play at a lower

level and joined the Wessex League Premier Division, where they have remained to the present day. The club have reached the FA Cup First Round Proper on four occa-sions, the last occasion being in 1988 when, after holding Torquay United to a 2-2 draw at Plainmoor, they were defeated 3-2 in the re-play at Cams. Fareham reached a semi-final of the FA Trophy in 1986/87 before losing 2-0 on aggregate to the eventual winners, Kidderminster Harriers. During the run to the semi-final stage, Conference Clubs Scar-borough and Barnet were both beaten on their own grounds... and these two went on to top the Con-ference table at the end of the sea-son! The club's last major honour was a shock defeat of odds-on favourites Farnborough Town to win the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1993. Now under current Manager Pete Stiles, the club is looking ahead to the future with optimism and ex-citement and to becoming a pivotal pillar of the community in the Bor-ough of Fareham. The Club has a flourishing youth section with teams aging from 6 through to U18's, and have obtained full FA Charter Standard Status for both their Adult and Youth sections, awards the Club is immensely proud of.

Previous Fareham Town Play-ers to have moved to play in the Football League: Kevin Bartlett - Notts County, WBA Steve Claridge - Too many to list! Darren Foreman - Barnsley, Scarborough Ray Hiron - Portsmouth David Leworthy - Tottenham Hot-spur, Oxford United Kevin Maddock - Willem II Tilburg (Netherlands) Paul Moody - Southampton, Millwall, Fulham, Oxford Domenyk Newman - Reading Alf Wheeler - Blackburn Rovers

FAREHAM TOWN PLAYER PEN PICS

Ross Casey (Goalkeeper) - Ross is a vocal keeper who commands his area and instills confidence in his defence. He's previously played for Horndean and Lymington. Luke Douglas (Goalkeeper) - Dougal first played for the club as a 16 year old and passed 300 appear-ances towards the end of last sea-son. Also scored once v Folland Sports. In the same Southampton Youth team as Gareth Bale and Adam Lallana. Shawn Benjamin (Defender) - There's not many Internationals playing in the Syd-enhams League, but Benji played for St Vincent & The Grenadines in their World Cup campaign for Rus-sia 2018. Archie Wilcox (Defender) - Experienced centre back who joined the club last summer. Formerly played for Petersfield, Moneyfields and Eastleigh. Ethan Jones (Defender/Midfield) So composed for one so young. A bright future is on the cards for this likeable young man who is also at Pompey ITC. Garry Moody (Defender) - Another new to the club last sum-mer after previously playing for AFC Portchester and AFC Totton. Pete's

no 1 target at the time who has terrorized many a forward in previ-ous seasons. Leigh Shadbolt (Midfield) - Lon-doner Leigh returned to the club after a brief spell in the Hampshire league. A manager's dream who's guaranteed to always give 100%. Tom Froggatt (Midfield) - A solid, no nonsense player who

wears his heart on his sleeve. Crowd favourite. Tom Settle (Midfield) - A new face at the club last season, Tom has set-tled into the side well. Spent two sea-sons at Portsmouth FC. He has plenty of experience at our level for Blackfield & Langley and AFC Portchester.

Ashley Tattersall (Midfield/Forward) - The heartbeat of the side. Ash has previously won the supporters’ Player of the Season for 3 seasons in a row and it's easy to see why. Defenders never get a minute's rest. A crowd favourite who's played over 300 games for us. Lewis Stockford (Midfield) - Joined from Baffins Milton Rovers. Deadball specialist Leigh was at Pompey and Hawks. His arrival is a statement of intent by the club.

Curt Robbins (Forward) - Another to join from AFC Portches-ter where he was a prolific scorer for their reserves, but rarely got a look in at first team level. His goals to games ratio to date for us sug-gests he can also score freely at this level too. Scott Hamilton (Forward) - Joined the club from Sunday foot-ball and his all action performances have quickly made him popular with team mates and supporters alike. Previously played Hampshire League football for Fleetlands. Aaron Kirby Dixon (Midfield) - Promising young midfielder who numbers Gosport and Sholing as his former clubs.

Pete Stiles (Manager, above) - Pete was part of the back room staff at AFC Portchester, doing eve-ry job possible except manage the first team... and aren't we delighted we gave him his opportunity to manage at this level. Pete took over in January 2017 and was instru-mental in a remarkable turn-around of the club’s fortunes. When he joined we were bottom; come the end of the season we finished 12th and had the 2nd best record in the Wessex League for the last 20 games. Pete is assisted by Matt Powell, Mark Jones and Sam Dixon.

THE NLP COLUMN

This week’s NLP programme column was written by David Richardson The demise of Bury should be the turn-ing point for football regulation across all levels in the country. On Sept 2 The Football Supporters’ Association met with the Alliance Committee – the Na-tional League, Northern Premier League, Southern League and Isthmian League - to put forward proposals on how to protect football clubs. The FSA’s proposals – which they believe should apply to all levels of football including Steps 1-4 in Non-League – have two key principles: the community signifi-cance of football clubs and avoiding conflicts of interest in regulation. The FSA believes The FA should be the overall regulatory body following the failure of clubs self-regulating under their respective leagues. It would eradi-cate conflicts of interest in the way that rules and regulations are set and ad-ministered by the leagues, and espe-cially where some of the decisions on the conduct of owners and directors of clubs are taken by the owners and di-rectors of other clubs. “We want to protect clubs and protect football’s assets from speculators and chancers coming into the game,” Andy Walsh of the FSA told The NLP. “Football clubs in this country still rep-resent the biggest expression of com-munity identity of any organisation in towns and cities up and down the land. Some football clubs sit on very healthy assets, pieces of land that their ground has been built on and have been in the club’s ownership for generations. That is quite an attraction to some specula-tors. Those assets deserve some pro-tection. The FA can provide that. “The leagues are privately owned entities owned by the football clubs themselves and they are

going to be less likely to vote for stronger regulation. “If The FA doesn’t step in then it should be government because football clubs are not just like any other busi-nesses, they are cultural and communi-ty assets in their local towns and cities and therefore they deserve a greater level of protection.” The FSA are also calling for the Own-ers’ and Directors’ Test to be strength-ened, with a more stringent process put in place. “The provisions within the Owners’ and Directors’ Test we believe to be inade-quate,” said Walsh, referencing the ownership of Steve Dale at Bury and Bolton’s Ken Anderson. “Those tests clearly need to be strengthened. “We also believe there should be great-er scrutiny of spending at football clubs to ensure they are being run in a sus-tainable manner. Stewart Day, who owned Bury before he sold to Steve Dale, racked up millions of pounds worth of debts incurred because of over spending. No action was taken by the Football League or The FA. There needs to be a review of the finances in the game. We would argue there needs to be a fairer distribution of wealth but that should be done within a regulatory framework because we equally do not want to see owners such as the Oys-tons, who took advantage of their stewardship of Blackpool to enrich themselves. One thing is for certain, we cannot stand still.”

Winchester City v Hartley Wintney, Hampshire Senior Cup 2nd Round. Tuesday 9th October 2018 Hartley Wintney progressed in the Hampshire Senior Cup following a pen-alty shoot-out against a Winchester City side that have been in good form in recent times, having reached the fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, which included a 4-1 win at Merthyr Town. In front of a sparse crowd, Winchester started the stronger and had the first effort on 4 minutes when Jamie Bar-ron’s shot was tipped round the post by Row 'keeper Adam Desbois. Hartley responded and on 12 minutes Nic Ciardini set up Jack French, who saw his effort go wide. On 22 minutes, the strong running Sim-ba Miambo latched on to a through ball and forced a good stop from Desbois. Almost immediately, a Josh Webb free kick found the head of Jack Ball, but his effort was wide. Miambo then showed a good burst of pace to get behind the Hartley defence and, as Desbois came rushing out, the City forward saw his lob go narrowly wide. All square at the break. City started the second half on the front foot and soon had the Row's goal under siege. On 49 minutes, Miambo got free on the right and Hartley did well to clear the ball off the goal line following a scramble. Six minutes later, Tyrell Mitford set up Jamie Barron on the edge of the box and his parting shot was well saved by Desbois. A goal seemed inevitable for City. Sub-stitute Joe Cook unleashed a fierce drive from 20 yards which crashed off the crossbar. Eight minutes later, Desbois was called into action again as he pushed another effort from Cook around the post, and shortly after-

wards, a home corner led to a scramble in the Hartley area, in the middle of which Desbois pulled off another good save. Adam’s evening was to get even busier. On 83 minutes he came out to the left edge of the penalty area and pulled down Mitford. Referee Mike Des-borough pointed to the penalty spot but Desbois atoned for his indiscretion by pulling off a marvellous save. The rebound was followed in by the City players and an almighty scramble en-sued from which came two goal line clearances, another remarkable save from Desbois, and Mitford heading against the post. Late chances came for both sides. Pryce was called into action when he blocked a shot from Claudio Herbert, before Nic Ciardini’s follow-up shot was also blocked. And in the last minute, Oli Bailey got in behind the Row defence but his lob over Desbois lacked eleva-tion, allowing Adam to paw away. So to penalties, Hartley going first: 1) Nic Ciardini & Mitford score (1-1) 2) Herbert & Barron score (2-2) 3) Webb & Miambo both score (3-3) 4) Paget & Cook score (4-4) 5) French & Hayward score (5-5) 6) Jack Ball & Brad Gale score (6-6) 7) Mikey Campbell scores; Oli Bailey sees his pen saved by Adam Desbois! Hartley won 7-6 on penalties thanks to some good, solid defending and in-spired goalkeeping. [Graham/O’Byrne] HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Louie Paget, Nick Hutchings, Tyron Smith, Jacques Kpohomouh, Jack Ball, Claudio Herbert, Josh Webb, Michael Campbell, Nic Ciardini (c), Jack French. 15 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2004-05) 18/9/2004 Hartley Wintney 2 Chessington Utd 2 Combined Counties League Premier Division Coming from a 5-1 drubbing away at Merstham, just 38 were at the Memorial Ground to see us draw against Chessington, our goals coming from Bennett and an own goal. A week later we were in FA Vase action, but not for long, going out 2-1 at home to Petersfield Town in the second qualifying round. Sheppard scored our solitary goal. It was not to be a season fondly remembered by The Row faithful.

10 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2009-10) 19/9/2009 Hartley Wintney 1 East Grinstead 2 FA Vase Second Qualifying Round After a very decent start to the league season, in which we scored a bag full of goals, games began to get away from us around this time 10 years ago. We’d been booted out of the Hampshire Senior Cup the week before by Whitchurch Utd at their place (3-0) in the first round of the competition. A nice little run in the Vase was in our sights, but we went down 2-1 to East Grinstead in front of a crowd of 82, our goal coming from Danny Weeks (pictured here on the right).

5 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2014-15) 16/9/2014 Hartley Wintney 5 Andover New Street 2 Hampshire Senior Cup First Round From the archive of the online version of the Basingstoke Gazette: HARTLEY Wintney cruised into the second round of the Hampshire Senior Cup, as they beat visiting Andover New Street 5-2. The village side were 4-1 up at half-time in the tie, after Ian Jones, Craig Barker, Lukas Burt and Ryan Stephens had all scored. Andover pulled a goal back after the break, but Steve Noakes added a fifth, which earned his side a trip to Conference South side Gosport Bor-ough in round two. We lost the evening game in round 2 at Gosport 3-1; but we were competitive and it wasn’t a bad result for a CCL club at the time.

Junior Football Club Hampshire Cup Results The First Round of the Junior Saturday and Sunday Hampshire Cup competitions were held over last weekend – we’re proud to have five of our sides going into the Second Round draw. Results on Saturday and Sunday were as follows: Sunday U18 Cup: Hartley Wintney 5 – 2 Fleet Spurs Trojans Saturday U15 Cup: Hartley Wintney Harriers had a bye U14 Cup: Hartley Wintney JPL 6 – 2 Sherborne St John Hartley Wintney Falcons 2 – 6 Badshot Lea Titans U13 Cup: Shooters Youth Blue 2 – 4 Hartley Wintney Hawks U12 Cup: Hartley Wintney Falcons 8 – 1 Waltham Wolves Hurricanes Hartley Wintney Eagles 0 – 6 South Coast High Performance Well done to all of our teams – and we wish the senior team the best of luck this evening in their tie against Fareham Town. [DS] HWJFC U15 Harriers pre-season update The 2018/19 season for the HWJFC U14 Harriers was another good season for the Harriers. We didn't quite match the heroics of our season at U13 (League and Cup double) but with promotion to Division 3 and a tougher Cup draw we ended the season with a 3rd place in the League and making the Semi Final of our Cup competition. We also took part for the first time in the Hampshire Cup. Hoping for a fun away trip to a team from the Isle of Wight or similar, we ended up drawn against a team based in Surrey who play in the East Berks League! Sadly we fell at the first hurdle, losing 5-3. Our third place finish was enough to secure promotion for the second season running, so for our (now) U15s it's another step up as we will be competing in Division 2 this coming season. We'll face tougher ties both in the League and League Cup (with some familiar foes moving up to Division 2 from Division 3 with us), and have again entered the Hampshire Cup; in the latter we got a first

round bye, so have at least progressed further than we did last season! We've had some personnel changes pre-season too. We've sadly said goodbye to Joseph Morris and Archie Dowie, who leave the team after 6 and 7 seasons respectively. We've added to the squad though, looking to strengthen in two key areas / afford us movement of a couple of players into new positions. Jonah Bharat joins us from within HWJFC (he was playing a year up) and will help strengthen the core of our defence with his strength, speed, aerial ability and calmness when in possession. Nayal Hashmi joins us from arch-rivals Hook (great choice Nayal). Technically excellent, Nayal will play through the centre of our midfield; his ability on the ball, with a strong touch, skill and imagination, will help us immensely. The rest of the squad remains as is, although at the time of writing we are captain-less; Tom Jarman having broken his collarbone pre-season and sidelined for another 3 weeks or so! So I mentioned "this coming season" earlier, and you may be wondering why we haven't started our fixtures already?! Reason is that we have 5 young Mike Dean-wannabes who are currently training to be FA-qualified referees; and the early course modules have been on game days to date. As Co-Chair of HWJFC I am delighted that we as a Club will have 5 players as new referees amongst our ranks in the next month or so; joining the pool of all the many other referees (young and old alike) who take on the (sometimes thankless) task of referring Junior Football (and perhaps higher levels in the game in coming years). So it's a big good luck and bravo to Finley Auchterlonie, Lewis Flower, Reece Gerard, Finn Lewington and Harry Saunders as they look to earn their ref stripes in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for a further up-date on our young refs' progress in a future Row match day programme. Finally, delighted to have the superb Luke Tuffs training the boys again this season. 100% sure that he will get the best out of the U15s and here's hoping for a successful season for our young Harriers.
