This week:- Meeting with Broadbeach Rotary. Police awards night

From Rhonda Tossers It was great to be able to share some lighthearted fellowship last night and toss our hats into the ring for Australian Rotary Health and mental health awareness. Construction worker Merv took out the well-deserved prize for ‘closest to the pin’ and walked away with a gourmet hamper. Members said they wanted more fun in Rotary, so watch this space for more.

Plant a tree Tam and Simone are co-ordinating our plant-a-tree-for-every-Rotarian, which will be held in Robina on Saturday 21 October starting at 8.45am. Next week No ‘normal’ meeting next week as we join forces with Broadbeach Rotary for their annual Police Officer of the Year awards. Contact Marion if you would like to attend.

Scribe’s report.

President

Rhonda

Chair and Opening

Chair Lea called the meeting to order at 6.15 pm.

We recited the Four Way Test and paid homage to the Queen and Australia with a toast.

International Toast

Greg gave an interesting talk on Rotary's involvement in China. First chartered in 1919, with 42 Clubs

by 1949, with a combination of locals and expats. Due to the unofficial negative influence of Mao, by

1952 all Rotary clubs had disbanded. However in recent years Rotary have been able to reinstate 11

clubs.

President's welcome noting guests and visiting Rotarians:

Rhonda welcomed visiting Rotarians Andy from Burleigh and Joachim from Hamburg.

June and Kathleen from Rosie's were presented with a certificate from Rhonda, and were delighted to

accept a donation from the carousel funds to continue the wonderful work they do with the charity for

the homeless. They have plans to buy a new coffee machine, tables and chairs with the funds.

Announcements and Directors' Reports.

Marion reminded us of the combined meeting next Tuesday with Broadbeach Rotary for the Police

Awards Night.

Greg spoke of the forming of an ad hoc committee to find a President Elect and a President nominee

for next year. He mentioned the possibility of several members sharing the position.

Tam invited us to join the tree planting on 21 October at Robina, with holes already dug and all we have

to do is plant. (See flyer this Rotator)

Merv passed on a report from Steve Penfold re Carousel. An audit has been done and the cost to repair

is substantial. Details will be going to a full council meeting on 14 November, for a decision.

Marion. Attendance and Secretary's Report

20members attending and 2 visiting Rotarians plus 1 guest. Total 23.

Sergeant :

Hugh asked everyone with a hat to come up and try to throw their hat into a large ring.

Members were fined for the privilege with funds donated to Australian Health. There were keen eyes

and steady hands and impressive attempts, but then Merv bowled a surveyors hard hat and got a

bullseye! And walked away with the picnic hamper kindly donated by Rhonda.

Raffle Winner : Merv Powell. Heads/tails Winner : Kathryn Russell

Guest Speaker: District PR Chair Andy Rajapakse

Andy spoke about ideas to increase our profile in the community and increase our membership. His

enthusiastic presentation and multiple good ideas ended with the Rotary International new slogan

"Rotary - People of action " See a problem and see a solution.

Vote of thanks: Merv P presented Andy with a Literacy Kit in thanks of his presentation tonight

President Rhonda closed the meeting at 7.40 pm

It was also decided that Rhonda, Graham J and myself will make recommendations of people our Club should so recognize, and I would appreciate you all giving it some thought and make suggestions to us confidentially, of members or people in the broader community who you believe are worthy for consideration.
