The Summary of the February 17th Meeting

The Event Committee formed the Reception line for today's meeting. This is one busy committee what with our Club's AnnualEvent just 17 days away but more about that later.

At 12:30 President Rod rang the bell signaling the two minute warning and as you might expect two minutes later he rangthe bell starting the 4779 meeting of our beloved Rotary Club. Notice that President Rod has reverted back to using thetraditional Rotary Bell. Does anyone miss the train whistle? Just asking.

Phil Strong and Paul Tumason lead us in singing God Bless American and John McLeod did his usual stellar job with the newsand humor. By the way, after a noisy start this reporter was pleased to see the audience listening closely to John, whodeserves all of our undivided attention every week- in my humble opinion. John's humor included some "observations ongrowing old" such as:

- You realize you're never going to be really good at anything- especially golf;- Your kids are becoming you and you don't like them;- When people say "you look great" they always add "for your age";- You get 100 pages into a book before you realize you've already read it;- When you do the "Hokey Pokey" and put your left hip out- it stays out; and- While you're sitting on a park bench a Boy Scout helps you cross your legs.

Red Badger Jennifer Simmons followed with the Wisdom for the Day with a quote from the founder of Habitat for Humanity-Millard Fuller (betcha thought it was Jimmy Carter): "It's not your blue blood, your pedigree or your college degree. It's whatyou do with your life that counts" Pithy and short- perfect.

Next, Red Badgers Jennifer Niklaus and Dan Caputo handled the traveling microphones for members with guests and visitingRotarian introductions.

This was followed by Christine Backhouse introducing our newest member- Shishir Doctor who is an Electrical Engineer withWinzler&Kelly. Shishir was born and raised in Mumbai India where he received his Bachelor in Electrical Engineering Degreeand a subsequent Masters Degree in 1971 at North Dakota State University after moving to the USA in 1968. Shishir ismarried to Charoo who has been his partner and wife for 37 years. They have two children- a Son named Vishal and adaughter named Payal. Vishal is an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon with the US Air Force and is currently serving inAfghanistan. Payal is working on her Doctorate Degree at the University of Liverpool in England. Shishir and Charoo are alsoproud Grandparents of 2 Grandsons aged 4 and 1. Shishir is a past member of the Rotary Club of Lenexa in Kansas City for 9years during which time he served as President in 1986-87. Shishir was also a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosafrom 1999 to 2008. All together Shishir has 18 years of perfect attendance at his two previous Rotary Clubs. In addition toRotary, Shishir has contributed to his community through his involvement in numerous nonprofit organizations. Wow! Whatan impressive resume for our newest member. Congratulations Shishir and welcome to our Club.

Speaking of impressive resumes our own President Elect-Elect Shirley Lewis was next up at the podium to talk about ourupcoming Event. In case you don't know Shirley has chaired our Event more times than I can remember and always does aphenomenal job. Shirley announced that there are only 15 tickets left for our March 6, 2010 Event. So if you want to go (andyou should) you'd better act fast or else you'll miss out on a terrific and fun time. Shirley thanked everyone who hascontributed their time, money and/or auction items for the Event. Speaking of auction items Shirley said we have somespectacular items this year such as: numerous dinners, a Sharks Box for 12, a private movie showing for 50, a week ofGiants tickets for 6, several wonderful vacation packages, lots of golf packages, fabulous wines and a tequila tasting for 10-just to name a few. So make sure to come to the Event and as Shirley said "bid high and often".

Kathy Wiley followed Shirley with an update on our Club's latest Rotaplast trip to Oaxaca. Kathy has spent countless hoursand significant amounts of her own money on several Rotaplast trips. Her dedication is truly amazing and exemplifies what itmeans to be a "Rotarian". Kathy told us about Professor Dolores Laguardis's class at Santa Clara University that chose as aclass project a fund raiser for Rotaplast called Team Saving Face. The fund raiser was held last Wednesday at SinoRestaurant and included a raffle that netted $1360 plus a $500 pledge and the proceeds from all the food purchases. EmilyBordallo was the driving force behind this fund raiser and is the daughter of our own Lisa Jafferies. Kathy also noted thefoundation grants from the Kieve Foundation, Cilker Family Foundation, Myra Reinhard Foundation, Fed Ex, E Bay, JosephGeorge, and the Mary Ellen and Mike Fox Foundation as well as a large donation from Joseph Wynne- a Rotarian whose WifeColleen is going on her forth Rotaplast trip. Of the $65,000 raised to cover the cost of the trip 40% came from foundationsand non-rotary sources, 15% came from the Rotary Foundation and 45% came from individual Rotarians in our Club- manyof whom are past donors. Next Monday at 4:00AM 9 of our Club members will leave the San Jose Airport for Oaxaca. The

members of our Club making this trip include Karen Sinunu-Towery and her Husband Jim, Steve Ladowitz, Carmen Siegler,Cyndie George, Colleen Wynne, Ivonne Montes de Oca, Norma Manchester and Kathy Wiley. Thank you all and have a safetrip.

David Ginsborg was next at the podium to introduce this week's program presenter- Laura Carstensen PhD. Dr. Carstensen isa professor of Psychology and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity which explores innovative ways toimprove the well-being of people of all ages. The National Institute on Aging has supported Dr. Carstensen's research formore than 20 years. She has published over 100 articles on lifespan development including her latest book A Long BrightFuture which she signed in the lobby after her presentation for those who purchased a copy. Dr Carstensen is a member ofthe MacArthur Foundation's Research Network on an Aging Society and has won numerous professional awards and honorsincluding a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gerontological Society of America's Distinguished Career Award and StanfordUniversity's Deans Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Dr. Carstensen delivered an excellent presentation on the aging of the USA. She cited numerous antidotes and statistics thatreally boiled down to one inescapable conclusion- we are getting older as a nation. For example, the life expectancy in theUSA increased from 35 to over 65 in the 20th century alone. In fact, the worldwide life expectancy increased more in the20th century than all the rest of millenniums in human history combined. Much of that increase in life expectancy can beattributed to 20th century advances in preventing early childhood deaths. Believe it or not, at the beginning of the 20thcentury 20% of children died before the age of 5. Incidentally, there is a difference between life expectancy and lifespan. Lifeexpectancy is how long you are expected to live while lifespan is how long it is possible for a human to live. According to DrCarstensen many of the members in our audience will live into their 80's, 90's, or even their 100's (my money's on BobKieve). She also said that a fellow expert on aging predicts that a human will someday live to be 1,000 (Yuk). Can youimagine the candles on that birthday cake but I digress. Dr Carstensen also said that by 2030 about 22% of the USApopulation will be over 65 years old. This compares to 1900 when only 4% of the population was over 65. Of course livinglonger is only part of the goal. The real trick is to live a productive and healthy long life as well. Dr Carstensen thinks thatthe same effort that produced healthier babies and children needs to be applied to our aging population. As a member ofthat aging population I couldn't agree more. Dr. Carstensen also sounded the clarion call that an aging population will createmany ethical, moral and economic dilemmas for the USA and the rest of the world. All in all a very good program that wasrelevant for all of our members.

Next week our program will be Kevin Nelson and "The amazing Story of California and the Automobile."

Your Duck is Dead

A woman brought a very limp duck into a vet. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet..

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner lookedon in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He thenlooked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head . . .

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and alsodelicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry . . . If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it'snow $150."

End Polio Now

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Theresulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbingthem of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. By donating now, you canhelp Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

You can down load the End Polio Now bimonthly news letter by Clicking On This Link. This is a separate download. It was updated Jan. 2010.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk. You can track progress on theinternet at this link.

The Four Way Test

Over 1.2 million Rotarians can't be wrong! In all the things we say and do . . .

Is it the TRUTH?Is it FAIR to all? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
