THE ROMANS IN BRITAIN

Page 2: The Romans in Britain

Julius Caesar first went to Britain in August 55 BC as part of his Gallic wars, but he withdrew to the continent because of the horrible weather. He took with him two Romans legions.

In 54 B.C, Caesar came to Britain again landing at Walmer near Deal in Kent. This time he brought with him no fewer than five legions but he went back to Gaul (Gallia) to put down a rebellion.

The actual Roman Invasion of Britain took place about a century later, when Claudius invaded the island in 43AD.

The romans spoke Latin. English origin is not Latin, but it has a strong influence from Latin.

The calendar that we use nowadays was also invented by the Roman emperor Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago.

The Roman Empire had millions of people, and to make sure how many people lived in it, they counted them, so they were also the inventors of the census.
