• To be able to describe the different types of Romans that made up Roman society

• To understand the concept of polytheism

• To learn information about major different gods that Romans worshipped

• All students will know 2 types of Romans that made up Roman society

• Most students will know what polytheism is

• Some students will know 3-4 different types of gods the Romans worshipped

• Work with others who’ve been assigned

the same type of Roman/part of Roman society &

exchange information about what you’ve read.

• Then, get back into your original groups from

the previous week & share what you’ve learned.

• Last, choose a group leader to share interesting information that you’re group has learned.

Religion in Ancient Rome?

1st with a partner discuss :

• What religion means to you & your family

• What religion might mean to people around you

• The different kinds of religion that you know about (ex. Christianity, etc.)

What did Ancient Romans believe?• in many different gods/goddesses, demi-gods

(half-humans and half god), and spirits

• each god had specific powers and controlled parts of the world

• the gods showed their unhappiness by sending earthquakes, hailstorms, and other natural disasters.

• the main god was Jupiter

- he was similar to the Greek god, Zeus.

• their emperors were god-like

Ancient Romans built :• temples for each of the gods and goddesses- the temples were filled with beautiful treasures- priests looked after the temples and took part in the religious ceremonies- people regarded the temples as a sacred and holy place- only priests were allowed inside the temples. • Romans statues that represented the god's human form

Activity: Who am I?(to learn more about Roman gods)

• Steps: Don’ t need to incl directions

• 1st Everyone will get a cheat sheet (names of different Roman gods – study that for 3 minutes).

• 2nd Everyone will get a sheet of paper with the name of

a Roman god on it.

• Put that on the back of the classmate to your left (use tape).

• 3rd Walk around the class & ask & answer questions

Task: to find out the name of the god that you are

- 1 question per classmate / Time 5 minutes

- Ex. Am I a male/female god?
