THE ROMAN EMPIRE –
AN OVERVIEW
The Ancient world vs. the Modern world
• Ancient world: 5,000 years ago BC – 476 AD
• Modern world: 476 AD/CE – today
• BC – Before Christ
• ANNO DOMINI – Latin: in the year of our lord
• CE - Common Era
OUR FOCUS: Ancient Rome
753 BC – 476 AD
Where to start? Its origins?
• The story of Romulus & Remus – did that.
• Next: Rome’s geography
• Founded on 7 hills
• Located on the banks of the Tiber River
• In the center of the Italian peninsula
• About 30 km from the Mediterranean Sea
• All of which helped Rome’s rise to power
• Now, let’s jump ahead and take a look at The Roman
Empire at its height – when it had the most power and
land – to the year 117 AD.
• What can we notice about Rome’s geographical location?
Where is it located in Europe? How do you think it helped
Rome’s rise to power? – Discuss with a classmate???
