CALLED TO THE WATERS OF BAPTISM Last Sunday, MARY

ANTOINETTE PARISE AND MELANIA LUCILLE PARISE were presented at ourbaptismal font and became children of God and new membersof our parish. We offer a warm welcome to them andcongratulations to their parents and families.

QUESTION FOR THE RIDE HOMEIf you were the leper, would you have told others about what

Jesus did? What does it mean to be clean on the insideversus the outside?

ASH WEDNESDAY THIS YEAR IS VALENTINE’S DAY The romantics may have practices associated with the one, while the faithfulembrace the discipline of the other. We leave it with you to sort that out. Remember to observe strictly the first day of Lent whileaccommodating the commendable Valentine tendernesses, by taking unusual advantage of Mardi Gras. Simply do the Valentine thingon “St. Valentine’s Eve” which, in any event, is a traditional party day. Hopefully, piety and romance will thus both be served.

RENEW + REBUILD CAMPAIGN PLEDGE PAYMENTS Remember to stay current with the reminders that are being sent from the centraloffice. Income tax statements have been mailed. If you still haven’t received one, please call Linda at the parish office.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

For their fiftieth wedding anniversary, their children andgrandchildren surprised them with a party at a localrestaurant. The kids rented a beautiful function room, planned a terrific dinner and invited family and friends.

Just before dinner was served, mom and dad were escortedto their table. Then the grandkids went to work. The lightsdimmer and on a large screen appreared their weddingpicture from that unforgettable day fifty years ago. Thencame picture after picture, memory after memory, of fiftyyears of joy, of struggle, of learning, of growth – the blessingsand challenges that are the story of every marriage. Withevery picture, the voices of sons and daughters andgrandchildren and friends shared touching memories andstories of what this couple meant to them. Some touching, some poignant, some funny – but all expressing heartfeltgratitude for the blessing this couple had on their lives. Eventhe restaurant staff – who have heard it all before – stoppedserving and listened and watched these images and storiesof God making his love known in and through his marriage.

Their generosity of spirit and greatness of heartmake this couple’s golden wedding anniversary an occasionof gratitude and joy for all the people in their lives.. In theirlove and care for each other, so many others realized the loveof God in their own lives. We all possess within us that samekind of love that calls us beyond our own needs and wants, the kind of compassion that can transform the darkestsituations by the light of hope. Such love is the very life andlove of God that the healed lepers felt when the encounteredthe loving Jesus in their hopeless lives. As we approachanother season of Lent, Christ promises us the grace to bethe imitators of his compassion and forgiveness wheneverwe are ready to take the first step in healing the wounds andcleaning the ‘leprosy’ that afflicts us and divides us from oneanother.

9:00 MASS MOVING TO IMMACULATECONCEPTION FOR THREE WEEKS During thedays when the new air conditioning system willbe installed in the church and in order to make

the best use of time, 9:00 Mass during the week (Mondaythrough Friday) will be moved to Immaculate Conception. Thedates are February 20-21-22-23-26-27-28-March 1-5-6-7-8-9.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK On Saturday, whenthe Church keeps the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, once again we turn our eyes to those who suffer and callattention to the incurably ill, many of whom are dying fromterminal diseases. As we pray for them, may they beencouraged to contemplate the sufferings of Christ crucified, and to know that their sufferings, united to those of Christ, will prove fruitful for the needs of the Church and the world.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT North Rockland parishes join hands again thisLent as we offer our people the opportunityto pray the stations of the cross at various

times throughout the day. This handy schedule is sure to meeteveryone's needs. Stations will be offered on the Fridays ofLent at 9:30 AM at St. Gregory Barbarigo, at 7:00 PM at St.Peter and at 7:30 PM at Immaculate Conception. We expect tobe collaborating with each other much more as we continuewith the planning process called Making All Things New.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED Beginning on the first Sunday of Lent(March 5) we will begin using this at Mass instead of theNicene Creed. The church particularly recommends its useduring Lent and Easter because the words of this ancient creedhave been used for centuries as the basis of our baptismalpromises, and these seasons put a strong focus on baptism.During Lent we prepare those who will be baptized at Easterwhile readying ourselves to renew our own baptismalpromises. As we recite the Apostles’ Creed, it will stir up inour hearts our commitment to Christ which was first made atour own baptisms and prepare us to renew our promises thisEaster.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS is the world’s largestCatholic fraternal service organization foundedin1882 by Father McGivney in New Haven and

Make a difference working with a group that activelycontributes to our parishes, promotes Catholic causes andsupports our community and students. Come and form newfriendships with brother knights that will last a lifetime.Information is in the pews today and next Sunday. Membersfrom Haverstraw Council #581 will be on hand in the narthex.

THE SEASON OF LENTPurification and penance are recommended to us by the Church, not to make us hurt, but to make us whole. Those areas of our spiritual life whichhave not reached maturity or which have fallen back into childishness are where Lenten practices are applied. These forty days have been set asideto help us draw closer to the Christian way of life.

ASH WEDNESDAY + FEBRUARY 14 + A DAY OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE

When you plan your Ash Wednesday, don’t just dash in and get your ashes and run. For the best results, you have to give yourforehead time to unwrinkle, and you shouldn’t immediately expose the dust to any passing breeze. What we recommend is that youarrive early for Mass or the prayer service and stay for the entire event. Let your head and your heart be touched by a lasting grace!Baptized individuals who have reached the age of reason and catechumens may receive ashes. Babies and young children who havenot yet received the Sacrament of Reconciliation need not be presented to receive ashes which are intended for those who are capableof personal sin.

The distribution of ashes will take place after the homily at the Masses at 7:00, 9:00, 10:00 AM (with the children only if school is insession), and at the prayer service at 7:30 PM. The children in religious education will receive ashes during class time. Only one fullmeal may be taken with two smaller meals for Catholics ages 18 to 59. Those over 14 years of age are obligated to abstain from meatand poultry. This may include some of our eighth grade students.

LENTEN SCHEDULE OF MASSES

Monday through Friday at 7:30 at Immaculate Conception and 9:00 AM; Saturday at 9:00 AM. Sunday at 5:30 (Saturday eveninganticipated Mass), 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 AM.

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION is available every Saturday afternoon from 4:00 - 5:00 and anytime upon reasonable request. Thechildren of our parish will go to confession by classes in early Lent. If you have been away for whatever reason, we assure you of awarm welcome home. Reconciliation Monday will be held on March 26 from 3:00 to 9:00 PM in every parish of the archdiocese.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14 and ends on Holy Thursday, March 29. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. This is a serious matter within Church law. Fasting means only one full meal a day may be taken. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain strength but together they

should not equal another full meal. Catholics ages 18-59 are obliged to fast. Abstinence forbids the eating of meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain from meat or

poultry on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Remember all Fridays of the year are designated as Days of Penance during which we are encouraged to practice self-denial out

of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us. The time for fulfilling your Easter Duty extends from the First Sunday of Lent (February 18) to Holy Trinity Sunday (may 27).
