regions
OutlineOutline
BackgroundBackgroundThe Security Council:• Urges IROs to inform the
1540 Committee as appropriate of areas in which they are able to provide assistance and to provide the 1540 Committee with a point of contact for assistance
• Calls upon IROs to designate and provide the 1540 Committee with a point of contact or coordinator for the implementation of resolution 1540
• Adoption of Res. 1977 (credit photo UN Devra Berkowitz)
BackgroundBackgroundThe Security Council:• Encourages IROs to enhance
cooperation and information sharing with the 1540 Committee on technical assistance and all other issues of relevance for the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004)
• Requests the 1540 Committee to continue to organize and participate in outreach events on the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004) at the international, regional and subregional levels and promote the refinement of these outreach efforts to focus on specific and thematic issues
BackgroundBackground
“The contribution and cooperation of IROs is key. By putting the specialized expertise of international organizations into a regional context, real benefits for Member States can be achieved. Hence maximizing the complementarities between the specialized expertise of some international organizations and the mandates of other regional organizations seems to be important”
