• Predictable
• Set tools
• Serviceable
• Comfort level
• (Costly)
BYO
• What machines?
• What tools?
• Maintenance?
• Teacher comfort?
• (Cheap?)
CONTROL CHAOSvs.

Defying Logic
• Population already had access
• Plethora of free tools
• Not about the tool – about the content
• Teacher doesn’t need to be the expert
• Students working on/with what THEY are comfortable with
• Changes the dynamic
• It is the REAL world
2011-2012
• Teachers were ready & asking• Guest network in place
(installed controller and upgraded to Nstd)• Focus on PD• Formed teacher committee• Revised AUP• Conducted Parent
Showcase• Set Expectations• All worked well
PD
• Site visits/shadowing• 21c skills• Summer Offering• Lausanne Laptop Institute• Provided more PLC time
Will parents
support it? (Seniors?)
Will we have
enough loaners?How do we
distribute loaners
efficiently?

Here we go!
• Teacher work day focused on immediate tools (Evernote, Google, etc.)
• Had 5 carts available to borrow– used <2!50 addl for those in need – distributed 10!
• Week 1- had students registerdevices on google form (to ease in tracking)
• Week 1 - borrow when needed in a class• Moved to borrow before school/return by end of day
• Continued Teacher Committee

“I am headed to the copier”…mid September
“They are moving at their own pace..andfaster!”
“So much easier. You need them on, they are
on!”
“I used to stand at the copier for over an hour at the end of the
day”
“Online tests give me immediate
info to go directly to problems”
Cut paper use by half!
What teachers tell me…
LOVE the immediate feedback.
I am SO much more organized. LOVE
Evernote.
I am carrying much less in my backpack.
First week of school –I’ve done something
other than take notes in EVERY class.
Won’t we have to manage distractions @
college and jobs?
I can’t imagine
doing school without it
now.
What students tell me…
Managing distractions
Learning new toolsChanging how we do things
Managing disparate equipment
Studentresponsibility
Moving everyoneforward
AUP compliance
Work with parents
Media Center ->Learning Commons
Student downloadscausing issues
Dealing withexternal systems
Cut paper usage by half
Need half the machines we previously used
Students working independently
Online working well
Overwhelming support for this
Lessons learned
What we liked
• Informal start year 1
• Parent meeting in May
• Handout for parents
• Students registering their own machine
• Partnership with Foundation
• Library as loan-central
• Student round-tables
• Parent round-tables
• Access to so many tools
• Students really do “own” their own computers
• Laptop institute in Summer
Lessons learned
What we’d do differently
• More planning for school supply list
• More understanding about the teacher work upfront with students
• More communication with ITC
• Talk about what happens if a teacher damages a student machine
• Not do this when we are also switching to a new operating system everywhere
• More student involvement after startup
