There's an interview segment inMartin Scorsese's film NoDirection Home: Bob Dylan inwhich Dylan is almost blowingoff the idea that he is special. He speaks in a nonchalantmanner, shrugs his shoulders, and tells the camera that he hasno clue where his ideas camefrom; they were just there. TwoGallants, San Francisco's mostpotent and perhaps mostimportant band, speak in muchthe same way. On a recentevening in a dark bar tuckedinto SF's Mission District, I satwith guitarist/vocalist Adam Stephens and drummer Tyson Vogel and spentthe better part of the night trying to uncover how these two young men (Adamis 24 and Tyson 25) are able to produce such emotional, visceral, intelligent, timeless, and original music. What I wound up learning was that theseburgeoning troubadours have no idea how good they are.
For example, when I pushthe issue with Adam, askinghim how his songs are ableto tap into the universalstruggle of the humancondition and how he's ableto channel the pain of mentwice his age, he shrugs justlike Dylan did and tells me,"I think whatever emotions itmight bring out, anyone canfeel that. I think thedifference is that for themost part, the older you arethe more developed it is andthe more comfortable you
are with it, and you kind of have a better understanding of your mood swings. Ijust think it's kind of there for anyone at any age as long as you pay enoughattention to how your situation affects you. I think it's credited to older folksjust because older folks are more familiar with pain." He's so fucking un-assuming that I almost think he's trying to be humble, but by the end of his 24oz. Tecate and our game of billiards, I believe him.

oz. Tecate and our game of billiards, I believe him.
Two Gallants are a special band, receiving incredibly high marksfrom MOJO, Rolling Stone,Pitchfork, Paste, Harp, Vice,NME, Rough Trade, CBS News, and the list just goes on andon. In fact, I don't know thatthere's been a negative piece ofpress yet - quite anaccomplishment for a couplekids who cut their teeth playingimpromptu gigs outside publictransportation terminals in SanFrancisco's seedierneighborhoods. Speaking loud tobe heard over the blaringjukebox, I question Tyson andAdam about those early dayswhen they used to play the nowlegendary "16th St. BARTshows" not far from where wehave chosen to gather. Adampulls himself from a distant glare and smiles as if he's remembering an oldfriend, "I think it just kinda brings it back to the primitive, original reason forplaying music in the first place. Music from the beginning was sort of created asa communal thing that brought everyone together. And that's sort of whatthose shows were like, that's the most communal gathering imaginable.Everyone's welcome, it's completely free. There would be grandmothers there, families, little children running around, homeless men, junkies, and kids thereto see the bands, just everyone. That's how music should be, and that's musicin its purest form, just directly to the people."
