What is Islam?

•Monotheistic , Abrahamic religion.

•Muslims believe that the faith was revealed at many times and places before, including through Abraham, Moses and Jesus, whom they consider prophets.

•Those prophets, however, either altered or misinterpreted God’s message.

Who Was Mohammed?

•Lived from 570 – 632 A.D.

•Born in Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula

•Worked as a merchant and trader

•At age 40 he believed he had been chosen by Allah to preach a new faith.

•He is believed to be the last of the great prophets.

•One day, Mohammad was meditating on Mount Hijra when the angel Gabriel (the angel who speaks for God) appears•Gabriel also spoke to Abraham, Noah, Jacob, Daniel, and Mary and Joseph

•He continued to receive revelations about Islam and converted many people.

The Story of Mohammad…

•In 622, the ruling tribe of Mecca exiled (kicks out) Muhammad for being too influential among citizens

•He and his followers traveled around Arabia searching for a home

•The city of Medina, 275 miles away from Mecca, accepted them

•In Medina, Muhammad solved problems for the city and many people converted to Islam

•Right before he died, he made one last trip (pilgrimage) to Mecca

•When he died, his revelations were collected into the Quran and Muslims established the 5 Pillars of Faith

The Five Pillars of Islam1. Shahadah: give testimony.

Every Muslim must repeat the Muslim creed in Arabic: “There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet.”

2. Salat: prayer.

Every Muslim must pray five times a day

3. Zakat: alms

Every Muslim must give charity to the poor

4. Sawm: fast

Muslims must fast during the month of Ramadan

5. Hajj: pilgrimage

Every Muslim must make a pilgrimage to Mecca once in their lifetime

The Kaaba: the place of pilgrimage and the direction Muslims pray to.

Islam Spreads• After Mohammed’s death

Muslims, under the rule of caliphs, conquered Arabia, Persia, Egypt, northern Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula (Spain)

• As Muslim armies moved Islam spread

• Muslims soon also won converts in India, China, and the Philippines

Legacy of Islam

•Almost 20% of the world’s populations is Muslim

•Led contributions to math, science, and learning

•Muslim Arabs established colleges, libraries, and hospitals that inspired the west
