Today’s coaching spotlight is on one of our veteran CanSkate
coaches, Debby Norris. Debby started as a youngster with
KWSC and ended up with the title of Canadian Novice Pair
Bronze Medalist. She spent time touring with “Ice Follies”
and later in the TV production of “Stars On Ice”. Debby
returned to the club as a STAR and Competitive coach
during the 80’s. She now has a full time job outside of
skating but still continues to coach in the club on our
Saturday and Sunday sessions. Debby gives up her spare
time to coach so she can “see the smiles on the skater’s
faces.” This tells her they are enjoying their time on the ice.
Debby, we are honored to have you as part of our coaching
team!
Congratulations to the following
Gold Test Recipients:
Carolyn Moss Gold Dance test
Rachel Gojmeric Gold Dance test

TCHSS– Staying until Power 4
Twin City Hockey Skating School (TCHSS) is a technique based
power skating program run by certified coaches. Power-skating is a
critical part of a young hockey player’s development. With a strong
skating platform, other skills such as stick handling and shooting are
much easier to develop. As a player continues through the Twin City
Hockey Skating School program he/she is introduced to new skills
which develop and improve the speed and accuracy of their play.
Continuing to improve skating can make the difference later on so
skaters are encouraged to stay in the program till Power 4. For more
information on our programs visit us at www.twincityhockeyskating.ca
Spring! At Albert McCormick
KWSC will be delivering its skating programs from the Albert
McCormick arena for 8 weeks in the spring. This is to avoid the
usual congestion that occurs at RIM Park during Volleyball and
Skills sessions that are run out of that location. Further
information will be sent to our membership during the winter
President’s Message
As always, this issue of The Rink Link is filled with exciting
events and impressive skating accomplishments. I am amazed
by how much we can achieve when we work together. Thank
you to our volunteers, coaches and staff for your tireless
work. You provide much more than an opportunity to
improve our skaters’ fitness, skills and coordination. To those
who train with passion and seriousness, skating also builds
important life skills such as perseverance, goal setting, mental
focus, achievement, and self-confidence. Our coaches, staff
and volunteers aren’t just supporting our sport. They are
building the future leaders of tomorrow. If you haven’t
already joined our volunteer team but want to make a
difference, please contact me. I would love to hear from you.
As the saying goes, “I can’t…but WE can”.
Update on Competitive Group Training Sessions
Kris Wirtz, who runs the new competitive group is happy to
report that the group sessions have been going great. The
skaters have been working hard and since sectionals everyone is
working on either triples or new jumps for the skaters who are
not yet doing triples. “The team is bonding nicely” says Wirtz.
All coaches involved are happy with the skaters progress to
date. With sectionals behind us the focus will be on stretching
each skaters’ limits with a focus on new skill development.
KWSC 75th Ice Show
The KWSC 75th Ice Show will be presented on April 12th, 2014 at the Waterloo
Memorial Recreation Complex. We very excited to have Figure Skating
Boutique as our presenting sponsor. Skaters across all of our programs are
welcome to join the performance. Registration forms and ticket information
can be found online at www.kwsc.org/iceshow or in the KWSC office. The
cost is $20 for which you receive a credit for one adult ticket. Skater
registration deadline is January 15, 2014. To see a snippet of the last Ice
Show, please watch the video on our web site KWSC.org

Santa Claus Parade
On Saturday November 16th, our skaters and supporters rode the
KWSC float and waved to a crowd of thousands in the Kitchener-
Waterloo Santa Claus Parade. KWSC members Kirsten Moore-
Towers and Dylan Moscovitch led the float along with long-time
KWSC volunteer Carolyn Fedy. Many thanks to Martha
D'Agostino and her team for their hard work building the float.
The skaters had a great time at this event.
