The start of the trailer to the 2002 movie The Ring, begins with what seems like an animated scene. It looks like what seems to be the inside of a video player. To the audience they will not understand why this is being used, however it does link to the movie further into the trailer. Therefore the use of this helps create enigma codes making the audience ask questions of what is happening.

Writing then fades onto the page ‘There Is A Videotape’, this statement allows the audience to straight away get an idea of what this movie could be about and what type of horror movie it is, however they will still question what significance this videotape has to the movie. Whilst this is happening synchronous non-diegetic sound is used to create the sound that the inside of a video player would make. This simply helps emphasise the fact that this videotape is very significant to the movie.

In the next shot once again non-diegetic sound is used to make the sound of a television which is not on a specific channel (the fuzzy sound). We are brought to a hallway where the focus is a door at the end of the hallway. This creates enigma as it tells the audience that something important to this film is behind the door, this is emphasised due to the use of tracking to show that the door is the focus.

The next shot we come across a still image of (what looks like a horses eye, but may not be) over the eye it says ‘if you watch it’. Us the audience will obviously assume that this links with the videotape and that the people whom watch the videotape something happens to them. However the audience still do not know what this movie is about

We see the little boy watching TV (which we assume is the 'videotape’ however we do not know for certain’. In the shot we see it seems very innocent however due to the setting being very dark it helps reinforce the genre to the audience. The shot reinforces many ideologies of emphasising the innocence of children which helps show that they will soon be corrupt within the movie.

Through each of the scenes a quick cut is shown of a screen of television fuzzing, this simply emphasises on the theme and significance of the videotape

This shot to the audience gives the idea that this trailer is telling a story of what the movie is about or what will happen. In this shot we see a dark setting once again (which reinforces many stereotypes of the ideological horror genre setting). Over the top of the image text saying ‘Seven Days Later’ this doesn’t give the audience much information it simply gives them more interpretations of what could be happening in the movie. The assumption we get is that whom ever watches the tape seven days later something bad happens go them.

By seeing the little boy in the shot we assume he is watching this supposed tape. We also gather the idea that the movie is centered around him as in the time the trailer started we have seen the little boy feature 2-3 times already. The scene is quite iconic as the little boy in his pajamas in an ideological view represents innocence and childhood, however contrasting this with the fact that we know this is a horror movie, simply emphasizes on the fact that this movie is the total opposite.

The close-up on the video player helps show that the child is in fact watching the ‘videotape’ which is the highlight of the movie.

The trailer so far is showing a linear narrative. We have now found out that the boy has or is watching the videotape and something will happen to him,. Therefore this shot clarifies w hat is going to happen to the little boy ‘you die’. The audience finally know what happens in the movie, the little boy watches a videotape where he will die. However even know the audience now know the storyline they still have many questions like ‘Will the little boy die?’ ‘What is on the videotape?. So in conclusion it may work well in letting the audience know what the movie is about as then they will want to watch it in order to find out what will happen or why certain things are happening.

In the next shot we see a short scene from the film however it is silent, we see the mum run up to her son screaming for him not to watch the movie, this therefore reinforces what the audience thought would happen (the boy watches the film which will then lead in chaos). Voiceover is used in order to give a creepier feel to the movie, the voice over says ‘Help Me’ which the audience can get many different interpretations from.

Special effects of montaging is used in this shot. This many emphasize on the time the woman has been sat their for a long time contemplating what to do.

After some short cuts we come to another scene within the movie. All the scenes to which we do not really give us any knowledge on what is actually happening, It simple allows the audience who see the film, know certain parts and know what certain parts in the trailer are significant. Semi-high pitched music is used to show creepy music.

Throughout the trailer since the last shot very many quick cuts are used to show different scenes within the movie. All these quick shots help fasten the pace, making the movie seem more hard hitting and a lot going on in the movie. It also makes the audience more interested as they are seeing all the interesting shots in the movie to which make the movie seem more interesting. In all the shots they are very dark as low key lighting has been used in order to reinforce the theme. No music is being played in the background just voice overs, the voiceovers are said by a creepy females voice which she simply says stuff which does not give much information yet helps reinforce the theme and make the audience want to see the movie even more.

More iconic scene are shown giving us slightly more knowledge on what will be happening within the film. In this shot we see a little girl (who looks evil or possessed). This shows binary opposites or innocence vs. evil. The creators have used the stereotype of children in movies being the focal point in the sense that they are the ones who become possessed who find the evil fi rst.

After many quick cuts we finally come to the iconic TV fuzzing page that has been going on throughout the trailer. This obviously ends the trailerSimply emphasising the fact that the videotape is the most significant part to the movie.

The page then changes and we get the in famous title page at the end of every trailer that simply gives the name of the movie with the logo, therefore the audience will recognise this style of writing wherever they see it.

Lastly we are shown the institutional logo. This is used at the end of the trailer in order to allow the audience to make assumptions on the film as they will base it on other movies this institution has made. If they like the previous movies made by the institution then they will like this one.
