Siemens is a global company with a focus on electrifi cation, automation and digitization, making it one of the world’s largest providers of energy-effi cient and resource-conserving technologies. The Siemens Karlsruhe site is mainly focused on process automation and is a large part of the Digital Industries division. Siemens Digital Industries is a leading provider of continuous software, automation and digitalisation solutions for the industrialisation of additive manufacturing (AM). In addition, Siemens uses AM across its production sites, reducing time-to-market and achieving higher productivity and fl exibility.

Manufacturing Karlsruhe (MF-K) manufactures products for process automation, industrial communication and identifi cation as well as robust, customer-specifi c industrial PCs.

In October 2018, the Innovation Laboratory was founded, tasked with the testing and developing of solutions using disruptive technologies. These are explored in order to improve and accelerate processes, aiding employees in their work.

The daily business of the MF-K is characterised by the production of a high product variance and small quantities. In order to achieve cost-effective mass production, it is necessary to reduce the complexity of the production system. This is attained by continuously improving processes, increasing the fl exibility of production, reducing throughput times and implementing innovative automation solutions quickly and cost-effectively. To achieve these goals, Stratasys FDM® and PolyJet™ 3D printers are used in the MF-K Innovation Laboratory.

As an electronic plant, the MF-K works with components that are electrostatically sensitive on a daily-basis. Their functionality can be impaired or even destroyed by electrostatic discharge, making it is essential to comply with the necessary ESD standards.

The MF-K uses Stratasys systems to print assembly fi xtures, product-dependent trays and robotic grippers.

For robot grippers, additive manufacturing has advantages over conventional methods. The grippers can be designed compactly and applications such as complex vacuum channels in the basic body can be realised.

Siemens uses additive manufacturing within its company sites, reducing time-to-market and achieving higher productivity and flexibility.

The Fortus 450mc is known for the manufacture of durable and dimensionally stable additive components made from high-performance thermoplastics, which are ideally suited for use in a production environment.

These components for automation solutions are developed and tested in the Innovation Laboratory. The MF-K uses Stratasys systems to print assembly fixtures, product-dependent trays and robotic grippers.

“Especially with regards to the robot grippers, additive manufacturing has advantages over conventional methods. The grippers can be designed compactly and applications such as complex vacuum channels in the basic body can be realised. It is also possible to print flexible structures,” said Heller.
