    News BriefThree Separate Incidents of

Violent Intimidation of Demsby Republican Extremists in

One Single WeekBy Brad Friedman; 1/27/2012; From the Brad Blog

Violent Republican extremism?! Whatviolent Republican extremism?! Oh, thisviolent Republican extremism...from justthe past one weekalone... A campaign manager for a Democraticcongressional candidate in Arkansas camehome to find his family's cat killed, withthe word "LIBERAL" painted on it. His 5-year old son made the gruesomediscovery. Five Democratic Missouri state Senators--- four of them African-American women--- discovered rifle crosshair stickersplaced on the door of their capitol offices.(Maybe they're just "surveyor's marks"though. Right Sarah Palin?) A veteran 14-yearpolice sergeantfromPeoria, Arizona (near Phoenix), proudlyposted a photo he took of a bunch of guys

with automatic rifles holding a bulletriddled t-shirt featuring an image ofBarack Obama on it.No, we didn't go looking for these stories, just happened to come across them. So

perhaps there are others out there that wemissed this week. Perhaps there isevidence of Democratic extremistssimilarly targeting Republicans with brutalviolence and threats of brutal violence. Ifso, we haven't seen it.This all takes place on the very same week

    in which Arizona's Democratic

Congresswoman Gabby Giffords wasfinally forced to resign from the U.S.House of Representatives while sheattempts to continue recovering her brain

function after being shot in the head andnearly killed just over one year ago thismonth in Tucson, AZ (Not far from wherethe cop near Phoenix proudly posted thebullet-ridden photo of Obama). While sixothers were killed during the same incidenin Tucson, as the shooter used a legalweapon allowing him to get off some 30shots per clip, federal and state lawmakershave failed to do a damned thing about any

of it.And the election year is just beginning.

The Obamas vs the Romneys: The

Republican Mind and Visions of Whiteness

and Race Suicide on Dr. King's HolidayMonday, January 16, 2012; From The We Are Respectable Negroes Blog

The road to the world imagined by Dr. Kingremains long.

Some four decades after his murder, andthe inauguration of the Southern Strategy, thesweet appeals of racial code words, and thesuccor offered by white racial resentmentremain undeniable to the Republican Party. When Santorum, Gingrich, and Romney talkabout lazy, parasitic African Americans whoshould pick up mops to learn about hard work, and where "the blacks'" exalted leader wants to

turn America into a "Socialist-Communist-Fascist European welfare state," the signals towhite racism are beyond dog whistles. They areblaring air raid sirens.

Dog whistles can also be subtle; they canbe visual cues which speak to the faithful. For example, some Americans see MittRomney's much publicized family photo as oneof homogeneous whiteness and WASP glory.Whether in rust belt towns, gated communities, poor white rural America, or the nondescript

    FBI: Cyber threat might surpass

terror threatBy: Alicia Budic; Face the Nation (CBS News); February 2, 2012 3:22 PM

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3460_162-57370682/fbi-cyber-threat-might-surpass-terror-threat/

Today, FBI Director Robert Mueller told the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee onIntelligence that he believes "the cyber threat will equal or surpass the threat from counterterrorism in the foreseeable future." He elaborated on the breadth of the threat, saying "there is

very little we do in this day and age that is not on or somehow associated with the internet. Thetheft of intellectual property, the theft of research and development, the theft of the plans andprograms of a corporation for the future, of all which are vulnerable to being exploited byattackers." On Tuesday, Mueller testified at the Senate Select Intelligence committee's hearing onworldwide threats. He had similar warnings about cyber security, and elaborated on three ways theFBI and intelligence agencies need to address the concern. He said that within the FBI, they haveto change their organizational structure "in the same way we changed to address terrorism."

Secondly, he noted that intelligence agencies "have to share information" in the same way"we had to share intelligence in the wake of September 11th...we have to build up the collectiveaddressing of that threat, in the same way that we did so and broke down the walls in the wake ofSeptember 11th." Finally, there is legislation the FBI would like passed to help combat the cyberthreat. He said there has to be a national reporting requirement for data breaches, and that "weshould be the recipients of that reporting." Built in that legislation he thinks there needs to be "theability to share the information indicative of a crime with the bureau and others who have thatresponsibility."

This comes just over a month after CBS Justice and Homeland Correspondent Bob Orrpredicted "cyber security catches terrorism -- maybe even passes terrorism -- as our top domesticsecurity concern. And I think we're about due for the first true cyber-attack on a piece of criticalinfrastructure, so we should watch for that." Orr made this prediction on the Dec. 25 edition ofFace the Nation during the show's annual CBS Correspondents end-of-year roundtable. NationalSecurity Correspondent David Martin, Senior Business Correspondent Anthony Mason,Congressional Correspondent Nancy Cordes, Chief White House Correspondent Norah O'Donnell,Political Director John Dickerson and Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer all made predictions aswell - some of which might just be on their way to coming true. Read theirs.

And, for the record, Orr is now two-for-two in his year-end predictions on Face the Nation. On theJanuary 3, 2010 edition he predicted the rise of homegrown terror threats from radicals inthe United States reaching out to known operatives.

suburbs, this is the America of"Nixonland"that so many yearn for. This is real America;the best of us; a country that they/we shoulddie to protect.

Of course, this is a memory steeped infalse nostalgia. It is whiteopian dreaming.Nevertheless, such illusions are bothcompelling and compulsive to manyAmericans of a certain age, hue, ideology, andexperience.

Other folks see the family photo of

Barack Obama and his kin as the future.Americans are a cosmopolitan people. Whilethere exists a deep and historic nativist impulse,as well as a fear of the Other, the country'sgreatness has been its ability to include all folksthat want to belong-- what is an all embracingsense of pluralism and "we the people" that isflexible, accommodating, and inclusive.

Citizens use heuristics, memes, cues, andslogans to make sense of politics, and to workthrough their own political decision-making.As such, for many, the photo of Mitt Romney'sfamily is that of "real America," and to deviatefrom this approved model is hazardous to theCommon Good, a decision that is perverse, andone that is "unAmerican."

By implication, for the collectiveconsciousness of the white Tea Party GOPpopulist electorate--and although they may lackthe vocabulary to express this cogently--there issomething inherently wrong with theinterracial, international, and "diverse" natureof Barack Obama's family. In all, the Obamaway is"race suicide": it is a path of destructionfor the United States, as to be American is to bequintessentially and unquestionably "white."

Folks like Pat Buchanan are honestenough to voice such sentiments, feelingswhich are the rotten, beating heart of the Tea

Party GOP. Others who share Buchanan'sanxieties and loyalties are not as courageous;they play around with his themes while notowning their substance.

Ironically, their need to couch suchwickedness in race neutral talk is "progress."However, the concerns of reactionary whitepopulists are centuries-old, near and dear toWhiteness and a country originated as a WhiteRepublic. For them the question remainsunresolved (even in the year 2012): how muchracial equality is "enough?"

The challenge here is that to be whollyinclusive, and to really create a radicallydemocratic society, is to risk the privileges of

Whiteness. It is to create a world in keepingwith Brother King's vision where white peopleare forced to compete on an equal playingground with people of color. Some of us aremore than ready for that world.

Others, those White Dreamers, whoforeground whiteness as "real and "idolized"America, are scared to death of a multiracial, multicultural, pluralistic 21st century.Whiteness is such a valuable currency, onewhose rewards have been outsized for so long,

that to consider further reductions in its returnsis terrifying to many White Americans.

On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, conservatives will mouth breath about hislegacy as they spin an empty story of racialequality, racist Southern Democrats, and whitevictimhood in the Age of Obama. Thesecontortions are to be expected. The joke is--andhas long been--that the real Dr. King, theradical visionary and not the deracialized, apolitical panderer for gross consumerism andempty politics, would be hated byconservatives, Red State America, and many

others fearful of his progressive vision, if helived in the present. This fact is a signal to Dr. King's

    greatness.

All Americans should be reflective on thisday. Sadly, many conservatives, and otherswho hold a deep disdain for people of color, thepoor, unions, the working class, immigrants, and the disadvantaged, will try to find a way tosteal Dr. King's vision. The time is long pastfor such antics to be made obsolete. In the year2012, those on the Right who bastardize andrape Dr. King's legacy, should finally stop suchfoolishness.

Brother Martin does not belong to you.

Sorry. He belongs to us. It is about time that hislegacy and vision were taken back--withoutapology--by those who would stand shoulder toshoulder with him in the present, and that arethe offspring of his struggle and martyrdom.

And Tea Party U.S.A. is not part of thatvision. They never were and could not possiblybe today.

    Hi-de-hi patients,

    it's a private NHSFebruary 1, 2012; by Louise Nousratpour;

    From the Morning Star

    http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/news/content/view/full/114922

Tax-dodging bosses at the first ever NHS

hospital to be privatised set out their plans for its futuretoday, prioritising "value for money" and "patientexperience" but failing to commit to spending onquality public care.

Circle executives made the remarks as theyofficially started managing Hinchingbrooke Hospital inCambridgeshire.

The firm won the management contract inNovember after the government decided to sellHinchingbrooke rather than meet its 40m debt - afraction of the billions authorised for bailing out thebanks.

Circle chief executive and former GoldmanSachs banker Ali Parsa today unveiled plans to turn the"basket case" hospital into "one of the top 10" in thecountry - but made it sound more like a cut-priceholiday camp than a quality institution.

He said that following "unprecedented sessions"with staff he had set four priorities - patient safety, patient experience, staff engagement and value formoney.

"Like John Lewis, Circle are employee co-owned, and have a track record of creating best-in-class hospitals," Mr Parsa boasted.

But in reality Circle is a joint venture betweenCircle Partnership and hedge fund firm CircleHoldings, both registered in the tax havens of theBritish Virgin Islands and Jersey respectively. Healthcampaigners and unions condemned the takeover as asign of things to come under government plans to shredthe NHS into easy prey for profiteers.

Unison assistant general secretary KarenJennings said patients and staff were rightly worriedthat an inexperienced profit-making company takingover could turn the local hospital. "Circle has never runan A&E or maternity ward, and its only other hospitalhas just 16 beds, and provides non-urgent surgery," shenoted.

"In health care patients must always come first, but private companies will always have profits andshareholders at the top of the list." Shadow healthminister Liz Kendall questioned why Circle - whichhas "close links" with the Tory Party and no experienceof running A&E or maternity services - was selected inthe first place. "Patients and the public have seen thisgovernment's true vision for the future of our NHS,with the wholesale transfer to the private sector," sheadded.

Health Emergency campaigns director GeoffMartin added: "With many other hospitals up and

down the country on the brink of financial ruin as aresult of government policy the vultures are hoveringlooking to feed on thecarcass of what used to be the

jewel in the crown of the welfare state."We have to fight back before the Circles and

their like are running the show from top to bottom inthe name of private greed." And TUC deputy generalsecretary Frances O'Grady urged the public to join theAll Together for the NHS campaign on March 7 to stopAndrew Lansley's damaging NHS Bill, currently beingdebated in the Lords.

"We have seen a private company taking overan NHS hospital for the first time. This will be thefuture the NHS has to look forward to if the Bill staysin its current form," she warned.

    Freedom Socialist Party

    launches presidential write-

    in campaign centered on

bold working-class solutionsJanuary 31, 2012; From the Freedom Socialist Party Websitehttp://www.socialism.com/drupal-6.8/?q=node/1839

This election year, the Freedom SocialistParty (FSP) is running New Yorker StephenDurham for U.S. president and SeattleiteChristina Lpez for vice president in anenergetic national write-in campaign.

Says Durham, 64, The FSP ticket is achance for people to vote not only againstsomething, but for something. The campaign isthrilled to be giving people a way to send astrong protest message, find new kindred souls, and strengthen organizing efforts for a futureall workers deserve.

Over the past three years, chargesDurham, The Democratic and Republicanparties have done nothing but cooperate inforcing workers and the poor to pay the costs ofthe Great Recession caused by the banks andWall Street. President Obama may play to thecrowd by criticizing bad apple corporations,as he did in his State of the Union address. Butthe facts show that the program of corporatecoddling, which creates austerity for themasses, is completely bipartisan.

Vice presidential candidate Lpez, 43,explains the campaigns goals: We are

encouraging people to register a protest againstboth the unjust economic system and the riggedelectoral process that keeps it in place. And wewant to generate discussion and action aroundsolutions for peoples immediate survival andfor changing the system for good. We know itcan be done! But it means creating a grass-roots, multiracial movementone thatprioritizes the issues of people who are hurtingmost, for example immigrants, single mothersand their children, and Black teens trying toenter a dismal job market. We have greatmomentum from last years spirit of rebellionto build on.

The FSP campaign platform calls for

taxing corporate wealth, ending all U.S.military involvement abroad, creating fullemployment through a massive public jobsprogram and reducing the standard workweekto 30 hours with no cut in pay. The campaignalso stands for bringing back and expandingsocial services, restoring civil liberties, and ahost of other measures designed to eliminatepoverty and discrimination and raise workersstandard of living.

Durham and Lpez are respected activistswith a wealth of experience gained fighting forreforms like these while popularizing socialist

ideas and the need for radical change.Durham, organizer ofFSPs New YorkCity branch based in Harlem, is a gay

rights pioneer with a strong unionbackground. A student and analyst ofinternational affairs, he has traveledextensively in Latin America. Lpez is animmigrant rights champion and theorganizer for Seattle Radical Women. Asorganizer, she has helped lead a feministcampaign of women and men againstbudget cuts in Washington state for the lastthree years.

According to campaign managerDoug Barnes, the socialist feminist FSP istaking the unconventional route of a write-in campaign because corporate funding ofthe two major parties and restrictive ballotaccess laws stack the deck against minorparties. These hurdles, he notes, arecompounded by mainstream mediadismissal of alternative candidates, resulting in presidential debates thatalmost entirely avoid topics like the socialcosts of war or increasing repression

against political dissenters. In one state, California, where thePeace and Freedom Party (PFP) electoralalliance already has ballot status, Durhamwill compete to be PFPs presidentialcandidate.

The Durham/Lpez campaignlaunches this week with a candidate Webvideo, position statements, Facebook atwww.facebook.com/VoteSocialism2012,Twitter @VoteSocialism, and featuredarticles in theFreedom Socialistnewspaper. With the help of volunteers, the FSP will be spreading the news andideas of the campaign widely. The

    A New

    DeclarationFebruary 1, 2012; Derrick Jensen,

From The Occupy Wall Street Journal

    http://occupiedmedia.us/2012/02/a-new-declaration/

We hold these truths to be self-evident:That the real, physical world is thesource of our own lives, and the lives of others.A weakened planet is less capable ofsupporting life, human or otherwise.

Thus the health of the real world isprimary, more important than any social oreconomic system, because all social oreconomic systems are dependent upon a livingplanet.

It is self-evident that to value a socialsystem that harms the planets capacity tosupport life over life itself is to be out of touchwith physical reality. That any way of lifebased on the use of nonrenewable resources is

by definition not sustainable. That any way of life based on the

hyper-exploitation of renewable resources is bydefinition not sustainable: if, for example, fewer salmon return every year, eventuallythere will be none. This means that for a way oflife to be sustainable, it must not harm nativecommunities: native prairies, native forests, native fisheries, and so on.

That the real world is interdependent, such that harm done to rivers harms thosehumans and nonhumans whose lives depend onthese rivers, harms forests and prairies andwetlands surrounding these rivers, harms theoceans into which these rivers flow. Harm done

to mountains harms the rivers flowing throughthem. Harm done to oceans harms everyonedirectly or indirectly connected to them.

That you cannot argue with physics. Ifyou burn carbon-based fuels, this carbon willgo into the air, and have effects in the realworld.

That creating and releasing poisons intothe world will poison humans and nonhumans. That no one, no matter how rich or powerful, should be allowed to create poisons for whichthere is no antidote. That no one, no matter howrich or powerful, should be allowed to createmesses that cannot be cleaned up. That no one,no matter how rich or powerful, should beallowed to destroy places humans ornonhumans need to survive.

That no one, no matter how rich orpowerful, should be allowed to drive humancultures or nonhuman species extinct. Thatreality trumps all belief systems: what youbelieve is not nearly so important as what isreal. That on a finite planet you cannot have aneconomy based on or requiring growth. At leastyou cannot have one and expect to either have aplanet or a future. That the current way of lifeis not sustainable, and will collapse. The onlyreal questions are what will be left of the worldafter that collapse, and how bad things will be

for the humans and nonhumans who comeafter. We hold it as self-evident that we should

do all that we can to make sure that as much ofthe real, physical world remains intact until thecollapse of the current system, and that humansand nonhumans should be as prepared aspossible for this collapse.

That the health of local economies aremore important than the health of a globaleconomy. That a global economy should not beallowed to harm local economies or land bases. That corporations are not living beings. Theyare certainly not human beings. Thatcorporations do not in any real sense exist. They are legal fictions. Limited liabilitycorporations are institutions created explicitly

to separate humans from the effects of theiractionsmaking them, by definition, inhuman

and inhumane. To the degree that we desire tolive in a human and humane worldand, really, to the degree that we wish to survivelimited liability corporations need to beeliminated. That the health of human andnonhuman communities is more important thanthe profits of corporations.

We hold it as self-evident, as theDeclaration of Independence states, Thatwhenever any Form of Government becomesdestructive of these ends [Life, Liberty, and thePursuit of Happiness], it is the Right of thePeople to alter or abolish it. . . . Further, wehold it as self-evident that it would be more

Weapon of ChoiceBy Dr. Stephen Londe; From an Unknown Source

We are used to the excuses and dissembling of politicians such as Mayors MichaelBloomberg of New York City, Mike McGinn of Seattle, Sam Adams of Portland, Ore., JeanQuan of Oakland and now L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as they collude to use false claimsof health and safety to suppress the right of free speech.

But we in academia are charged with teaching and fostering critical thinking, academicrigor and honesty. So what are we to think of UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau andUC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi, who do not seem to grasp the basic principle of academicfreedom as they unleash repression and violence in response to reasoned dissent and peacefulprotestprotest that represents some of the finest traditions of academic contribution?

The images of university police and sheriffs deputies pepper spraying nonviolent studentsvoicing their opinions on campus grounds, or brutally jabbing them with batons or draggingthem away by the hair, plainly demonstrate these administrators attitude toward criticalthinking.

Is this the America we want?As a physician, I too am concerned about health and safety. Yet I can find no articles online

about the relationship of tents and public health, nor of fires and protest tent camps, nor ofdisease outbreak and unsanitary conditions for lack of waste disposal in public protestencampmentseven encampments 10 times larger than those just disbanded by chemicalweapons, force and arrest.

But in an instant, I find more than 39,000 references to health concerns about the use of so-

called pepper spray (Oleoresin capsicum). Of significant concern to health professionals are:in-custody deaths after the use of pepper spray, corneal abrasions, conjunctivitis, eyeepithelial and nerve damage, respiratory failure, asthma, exacerbated congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, pulmonary edema, pregnancy miscarriage, and short- and long-termpsychological damage caused by the force perpetrated by those who are supposed to protect usand our right to dissent.

Make no mistake, pepper spray is not a food product, as a Fox newscaster recentlydescribed it. It is a chemical weapon described in military manuals that attacks sensory nervesand mucous membranes. The police use of this weapon against peaceful protesters fits thedefinition of torture: The deliberate application of severe pain. It is not benign. When you watcharmored police spray the faces of protesters in Philadelphia, Oakland, Davis and New York, remember they are using torture to silence someone who committed the crime of speaking out.

Again, I am sensitive to health concerns. And, in fact, there are health problems to be foundamong the 99 percent protesters. Volunteer doctors, nurses and other health care workers finduntreated hypertension, diabetes and other chronic illnesses among the protesters. They also find

seizure disorders in people unable to afford their medications. Most of the health problems in this population are due to the lack of health insurance,

inability to pay for expensive medications and lack of proper health care facilities. If our mayorswere honestly interested in the health of their constituents, they would set up facilities wherevolunteer health professionals could care for our citizens. Perhaps they could set up medicationand lab diagnostic funds into which their corporate backers could donate like good citizens, instead of using their wealth to buy political influence.

If we are to encourage education and critical thinking, we must value our students indissent. Punishing them with batons and pepper spray, torturing them, martyring them is toproduce a society of evil and repression. It is anathema to education.

Dissent and peaceful assembly are the hallmarks of democracy. What has happened toours? Our abused students are showing us the way, and I salute them.

precise to say that it is not the Right of thePeople, nor even their responsibility, butinstead something more like breathingsomething that if we fail to do we die.

If we as a People fail to rid ourcommunities of destructive institutions, thoseinstitutions will destroy our communities. Andif we in our communities cannot providemeaningful and nondestructive ways for peopleto gain food, clothing, and shelter then we mustrecognize its not just specific destructive

institutions but the entire economic system thatis pushing the natural world past breakingpoints. Capitalism is killing the planet.Industrial civilization is killing the planet.

Once weve recognized thedestructiveness of capitalism and industrialcivilizationboth of which are based onsystematically converting a living planet intodead commoditiesweve no choice, unlesswe wish to sign our own and our childrensdeath warrants, but to fight for all were worthand in every way we can to overturn it.

Who used the term "vulture capitalism" todescribe the activities of one of America's mostsuccessful venture capital firms and elaborated

as follows: "They sit there until they see adistressed company, then they swoop in, pickthe carcass clean, and then fly away."Was it: A. Sue Bradford; B. Hone Harawira; C.Fidel Castro; D. Barack Obama; E. Rick Perry

The correct answer is Perry, the Texasgovernor who was briefly the frontrunner in therace to become the Republican candidate in thisyear's presidential election. He was talkingabout Bain Capital, the company co-founded byMitt Romney, the firm favourite for theRepublican nomination following his victory inthe Florida primary this week. Romney waschief executive of Bain for 15 years, during

which time he amassed a fortune estimated atmore than a quarter of a billion dollars. Whenhe left in 1999, he became a passive partner in

some Bain entities, an arrangement that giveshim about $16 million a year.

(Notwithstanding his wealth and the factthat he has, to all intents and purposes, beenrunning for president for the better part of adecade, Romney has been known to joke thathe's unemployed.) A venture capital firmprovides funding to companies that needinvestment for expansion or productdevelopment in return for a share of the risksand rewards. A vulture capital firm does prettymuch what Perry said. Bain under Romneyseems to have been both.

Romney claims to have created 100,000jobs by revitalising companies and putting themon the path to prosperity. At other times Bainexecuted leveraged buyouts, forced thecompany concerned to take over its debt and, having extracted huge dividends andconsultancy fees, let it go bankrupt. Somedefenders of slash-and-burn capitalism call this"creative destruction", arguing that over time ithas a positive, Darwinian effect. You mightexpect Perry, as a rock-ribbed Republican andchampion of the free enterprise system, to takethat tack; instead he came at it from theperspective that "I don't believe capitalism is

making a buck under any circumstances".Perry's now out of the race, but this torch willbe carried by the increasingly feral NewtGingrich, who describes Bain's modus operandias "rich people figuring out clever legal ways toloot companies and lay off people".

His supporters have put together a 30-minute film of Bain's greatest hits. AssumingRomney wins the nomination, it will then be theturn of Obama and the Democratic Party. TheRepublicans have been calling Obama asocialist for the past four years, so theyshouldn't be surprised when he bashes their

    Dictatorship of the

MarketPerhaps it seems excessive to say that decisions of rating agencies

interfere directly in people's lives. But this is exactly what happens.January 18, 2012; By Jos Goulo; Jornal de Angola, Angola

Translated By Jane Dorwart; Edited by Laurie Henneman

There are situations which, when described, cannot be spared by beating around the bushor mincing words. Why try to sweeten the word "dictatorship" with another when it is basedexactly on a determined fact?

And the fact is that the decisions of those so-called ratings agencies representinterventions into the lives of people: taking away rights, lowering salaries, forcing layoffs.

Who gave power to these rating agencies? Citizens? Were they elected? Did they presentany plans? Who are they? Do they have faces?

Are they accountable to anyone? Do they even pay taxes? All of the answers that each one of us could give to these questions will be enough to

realize that we are facing an opaque phenomenon which, with absolute certainty, has nothingto do with any democratic mechanism. Perhaps it seems excessive to say that decisions ofthese rating agencies interfere directly in people's lives. But this is exactly what happens. Theagencies rate the debts of countries, which determines the treatment that the market will givethese debts, and which then requires that governments to alter their countries' economies. Asmany know, during the current crisis, these changes fall directly on the most vulnerable sectors

of the population. Most people don't know there are many rating agencies. This is understandable as we only

speak of three: Standard and Poor's, Moody's and Fitch, all of them American, and whoseimportance appears to be a etched in stone.

Last Friday Standard and Poor's downgraded the ratings of nine countries of the EuropeanUnion, even removing the highest (AAA) assessment of France and Austria. Europe was in astate of shock two weeks before a summit about a treaty which will place drastic limits onpublic deficits, institutionalize austerity and wound the same as always. Such a treaty willrepresent the end of the ability of the states to realize investments and to maintain the socialrights of citizens.

Then, in the middle of the general panic, rose the voice of Merkel, spared by theassessors, saying that the best answer to give Standard and Poor's would be to approve andrapidly and vigorously put into effect a new treaty. This is saying in plain language, "Let's notwaste time with doubts and discussions, let's go forward with the treaty," which as we alreadycan see is a creation of Merkel. There is no thought of submitting the treaty to a referendum ofthe populace, as if by doing so time would be lost and and it would become unviable.

However, faced with rising criticism, Standard and Poor's assures people that it is notacting capriciously. They are in the right; the power of money hates whim and only knowsgreed. We would do well to notice that between the downgrading of debt ratings and thesonorous proclamation of Merkel, there is a relationship of cause and effect, which is not ofcourse either whimsical or coincidental, given that the German chancellor is the greatestproponent of neoliberal orthodoxy in the European Union universe.

The ratings agenciesthe American "three sisters," understandare pillars of aneoliberal order which imposes absolute power over the markets: markets of speculation, usury, and of the economy of the casino. They are not elected or chosen by us, but given to us.I have no doubt that the word "dictatorship" is the best one to describe the situation as it is.

candidate with the cudgel so enthusiasticallywielded by leading figures in their own party.

You may shrug and say "Well, that'sAmerican politics for you" - but it might go a bitfurther than that. First, it suggests that even theRepublican Party, the spiritual home of GordonGekko-style capitalism, is immune to theresentment against Wall Street and itscounterparts that has been gathering steam sincethe 2008 global financial crisis. Manifestationsof this backlash range from the Occupy Wall

Street movement and its many off-shoots andimitators to the British Government's decisionthis week to strip a knighthood from the manwho presided over the greatest banking failurein UK history. Second, Romney's candidacywill in effect be a referendum on "new"capitalism, which rationalises and restructures

and plays computer games with other people'smoney, as opposed to benign and paternalistic"old" capitalism which employed people tomake things.

Romney may look and sound like anotherin the long line of privileged Americans whobelieve God wants them to buy their way intothe White House, but he's more than that - he's astandard-bearer for new capitalism. As a profileinNew Yorkmagazine put it: "Romney was abusiness revolutionary ... pioneering the use of

takeovers to change the way a businessfunctioned, remaking it in the name ofefficiency. "What emerged from the processwhen Wall Street reclaimed American businessand remade it in its own image was a systemthat was more productive, nimble and efficient

than the one it replaced. It is also less equal, lessstable and more brutal."

How apt that he has was endorsedyesterday by Donald Trump, America'scelebrity arch-capitalist famed for hiscatchphrase "You're fired!" If Romney becomespresident having had his corporate historydissected and debated throughout thenominating process and election, it willdemonstrate that the mindset and methods herepresents aren't a spent force or an anathema to

the American people. And where America goes, the world still tends to follow. Or perhaps NewZealand's the trailblazer. After all, it wouldmean that the US had followed our example byelecting a financier who will be the country'srichest-ever leader.

Black Voices for Economic Justice Must BeHeardBy Dr. Ron Daniels; From The Institute of the Black World

Struggling to come up for air from a brutalschedule, for several weeks I had been planningto write an article about the necessity of thoseaffected by the Great Recession to take to thestreets to express their outrage. Before I couldput pen to paper it happened. A disparate bandof mostly young protesters from around thecountry, disgusted with the rapacious behaviorof 21stcentury Robber Barons, marched onWall Street and set up a camp called OccupyWall Street. As an organizer one never knowswhat event, what incident or action will be thespark that galvanizes a movement for change. Inthe face of a Great Recession, precipitated bythe greed-driven and reckless behavior of thebandits on Wall Street, there has been growingdiscontent among the American people, butwith rare exception (mass actions by labor and

allies in Wisconsin and Ohio) there has been anoticeable absence of mass action, particularlyon the left. Indeed, over the past couple ofyears, it has been the Tea Party Patriots whohave captured media attention and dominatedthe national discourse with their caravans andprotest demonstrations calling for deepspending cuts, deficit and debt reduction, lowertaxes and limited government. Purportedly bornout of outrage over the bail-out of Wall Street, curiously the Tea Party has leveled its fire atbig government as opposed to the bandits onWall Street who committed the crime.

On the left, President Obama has been theprimary target of outrage for his failure to

articulate and fight for more progressivepolicies, including bailing out the victims of thesub-prime mortgage scam and moreaggressively reining in, even investigating andprosecuting those who caused the crisis. In arecent series of articles on strategy for theprogressive movement in 2012 and beyond, Isuggested that rather than focus exclusively onObama, progressives need to act boldly togalvanize a movement around the vision, valuesand principles of a socially responsibleeconomy where the needs, interests andaspirations of the people take precedent overprofit and property as dictated by corporations

and financial institutionsWall Street. In apolitical environment where a timid President ishampered by the noise and obstructionist tacticsof the reactionaries, we who believe in adifferent definition of freedom and democracythan the conservatives must take to the streetsand mobilize to march on ballot boxes toarticulate and advance our vision and agenda. We must work to unite the many to defeat thefew!

What has now become the Occupy WallStreet movement that is spreading across thenation like wildfire is potentially a gamechanger, a turning point, a social movementwith the potential to impact the politicaldiscourse by refocusing on the urgent need topreserve and expand the budding culture ofrights fought for by generations of progressives.

It is Wall Street that embodies the evils ofunbridled Capitalism with its insatiableappetite for profits at any costs and any means, including scamming millions of Americansthrough the subprime mortgage fiasco andslicing/dicing/packaging paper to make obscenefortunes from exotic schemes outside the viewof the American public; it is Wall Street thatpays its executives exorbitant salaries, in manyinstances hundreds of times more than theaverage worker and provides multi-milliondollar severance packages when vaultedcorporations fail; it is Wall Street whichexpends millions of dollars on lobbyists topurchase policies in Washington favorable to its

interests and vigorously and viciously fightsagainst regulations, no matter how mild (likethe Dodd-Frank bill) to rein in thepractices/behavior harmful to people and thenation. It has been government policiesfavorable to Wall Street coupled with theincremental shredding of the social safety netand relentless assault on labor/unions that haveled to the greatest level of inequality or gapbetween rich and poor since the GreatDepression. According to a recentNew YorkTimes Editorial, the top 1% now accounts fornearly 24% of the nations income, the highestsince 1928. And still Wall Street craves more.

It was this craving, the inexhaustible quest formore and more profit by corporations andfinancial institutions grown too big to failwith the tacit if not explicit approval of the

government, that led to an economic collapse, the Great Recession which brought the U.S. andthe world to the brink of catastrophe.

Occupy Wall Street has exploded onto thescene in this moment of grave crisis in theeconomic and political life of the nation, providing a much needed outlet and target forthe pervasive rage rampant among millionsravished by joblessness, mortgage foreclosuresand financial institutions shamelessly eager torape them with fees calculated to evade theconstraints imposed by the newly createdConsumer Protection Agency. But, thus farOccupy Wall Street is a self-proclaimedleaderless, politically non-aligned movement

with a multiplicity of messages, grievances andrighteous slogans but no coherent set ofgoals/demands. And, there are scant numbers ofBlacks and other people of color in the ranks ofthe protesters. The movement isoverwhelmingly White.

There are some who argue that crafting aspecific set of goals or demands on corporationsor the government would sap the movement ofits creativity, vitality and energy by creatingdivisions among the protesterswho may havediffering views on specific goals or policyrecommendations. It may be that the myriadissues encapsulated in Occupy Wall Street

will be sufficient to produce an unspecifiedpositive outcome. The mass protests in ArabSpring, which apparently inspired theleaderless revolt against Wall Street, had abroad objectiveridding their nations oftyrants/despots and working to create moredemocratic societies. The prolonged hungerstrike by Gandhi protg Anna Hazare in Indiathat provoked mass movement in the streets wasdirected at corruption in the government. Itresulted in the passage of an anti-corruption bill

by the Indian Parliament. The March onWashington produced the Civil Rights Act of1964 and the Selma to Montgomery March ledto the adoption of the historic Voting Rights Actof 1965. Hoovervilles and protests in the streetsby armies of the unemployed helped to createthe political space for Franklin D. Roosevelt tolaunch ambitious public works programs thatput millions of people to work as part of theNew Deal.

Im not certain that anger and outragewithout a message and agenda will ultimatelytransform Wall Street or break the gridlock inWashington that is tantamount to fiddling whilecountless millions suffer. Perhaps labor or otherorganized progressive forces, including theProgressive Caucus in the Congress, willleverage the mass movement in the streets tooutline a short term agenda for jobs and justicethat will put millions of people back to work, provide massive relief for the victims ofmortgage foreclosures and beat back the attemptof reactionaries to stifle the regulation of WallStreet.

The unemployed/jobless, the legionswhose homes are underwater or have beenforeclosed because of the sub-prime mortgagescam and students whose career paths are in

jeopardy because of mounting debt from college

loans or escalating tuition costs, the affected anddisaffected of all races and ethnicities should beflocking to the Occupy Wall Street sites indroves. But, there is also a special need forBlack people to seize upon the momentumcreated by Occupy Wall Street to identify withand mobilize our forces to add fuel to the fire. The Great Recession precipitated by theunconscionable behavior of Wall Street did not

just ruin the lives of White people; it was anequal opportunity destroyer thatdisproportionately wreaked havoc on Blackpeople and Black communities. Alreadyplagued by a wealth gap that has persisted forgenerations, the sub-prime mortgage scam that

targeted Black consumers wiped out billions ofdollars in wealth, liquidating decades of gainsby the Black middle class. George Fraser,President/CEO of FraserNet, estimates that itmay take a century to recoup the wealth lost byBlack America as a consequence of a scam thatpreyed on victims yearning to realize theAmerican dream.

As Vernon Jordon, former President of theNational Urban League once put it, whenWhite America gets a cold, Black America gets

pneumonia. Nothing is more illustrative of thisdictum than the Great Recession. Most politicaleconomists concede that the employment rate in

Black America is at least twice the official rateof 9.1% and perhaps triple when one takes intoaccount the unemployed who have simply givenup the search for work. By some estimates 40-50% of Black youth/young people between theages of 16-30 are jobless! Moreover, thedramatic rise in poverty attributed to the GreatRecession has disproportionately impactedBlack people. White America is experiencing aGreat RecessionBlack America is in thethroes of a debilitating social and economic

Depression borne of decades of benign andblatant neglect, exacerbated by racist andcriminal behavior of the barracudas on WallStreet.

Black Voices for Economic Justice haveevery reason and right to be heard. The fact thatWhite protesters initiated and have led OccupyWall Street should not be a deterrent to Blackengagement. We should view the currentconflagration as an opening to raise our specificissues and demands, as we add our voices to thegrowing amorphous movement to confront andchange Americas capitalist political economyas symbolized by Wall Street. As a peoplewhose leaders and organizations have oftenbeen the conscience of the nation and thevanguard of major social movements, Africansin America should seize every opportunity toexpose the hypocrisy and contradictions of anunjust system as we struggle to create a just andhumane society. The challenge is to find ourown voice to express issues of particular interestto Black people within the context of thebroader struggle for reform and transformation.

By organizingBlack Voices for Peace andJustice, our late beloved Brother Damu Smithdeveloped a principled and creative avenue tomeet this challenge. Damu recognized thatissues of concern to Black people may be

ignored or avoided as divisive even amongWhite liberals and progressive. He alsorecognized that Blacks might not be equitablyincluded in the planning and leadership ofprotests and demonstrations initiated by Whites. As opposition to the War in Iraq grew, DamuorganizedBlack Voices for Peace and Justice toensure that the push to end the war would relateto the urgent need for resources to address theongoing crises in Black America. Rather thandismiss the anti-war movement as a whiteinitiative, Damu created a vehicle for Blackpeople to add their voices to a just strugglewhile simultaneously insisting that Black issuesbe addressed. In one memorable instanceBlack

Voices for Peace organized a parallel marchthrough Black neighborhoods in Washington,D.C. that called attention to Black issues. Aftercompleting the route through the Blackneighborhoods, the March merged with amassive anti-war demonstration across from theWhite House where Damu was one of thespeakers.

We should adopt a similar approach as itrelates to Occupy Wall Street. First, as anexpression of solidarity and acknowledgment ofthe harm inflicted on Black people by WallStreet, we should encourage Black people toattend Occupy protests in New York and

cities across the country. A number of Blackleaders, activists and organizers have alreadymade a conscious commitment to visit Occupysites to express support for rallies anddemonstrations. Equally important, however, inNew York and around the country, Blackleaders, activists and organizers should mobilizebroad based coalitions of Black people toconduct parallel marches and/or have organizedBlack contingents within Occupy protests. Thisis important because Blacks must utilize the

media glare of the moment to shine a light onspecific issues and concerns of importance toBlack people.

Since Bank foreclosures havedisproportionately devastated Black familiesand communities as a result of the sub-primemortgage scam and the onslaught of the GreatRecession, Black Voices for Economic Justiceshould demand a Moratorium on HomeForeclosures and a massive federal and bankindustry sponsored program to Bail OutHomeowners. We should demand that theAttorney General investigate and prosecute thecriminals whose reckless behavior created thecrisesJail the Criminals on Wall Street. Weshould demand that the banks most responsiblefor perpetrating the sub-prime mortgage scamon Black people create Investment Funds toprovide grants and low interest loans forbusiness/economic development in BlackneighborhoodsRebuild BlackNeighborhoods. We should demand a Bailoutfor Students burdened by loans to pay for theescalating cost of a college education. Blackvoices should be heard loud and cleardemanding a Massive Jobs program toimmediately put at least 2 million people towork hired directly by the federal government toperform public sector jobs (something similar to

Congresswoman Jan SchakowskysEmergencyJobs to Restore the American Dream Act)with an emphasis on targetingneighborhoods/communities with the highestlevels of joblessness. And, Black voices shouldalso be sounding the clarion call for aMillionaires Tax to finance the jobs bill andcompel Wall Street to shoulder majorresponsibility for helping Americans to healfrom wounds inflicted by the injurious behaviorof the Robber Barons.

This is not a time for people of Africandescent to sit on the sidelines. Black folks whohave lost their homes to foreclosure or areunderwater because of the sub-prime mortgage

scam, Black students who are drowning in debtfrom student loans and the Black joblessnessshould mount parallel but supportive Occupymarches and rallies all across the nation.Africans in America should heed theadmonition of the Gary Black Political Agenda;our voices must be heard because it is ourpeople who are most deeply hurt and ravaged bythe present systems of society. Black Voicesfor Economic Justice should gear up to OccupyWall Street and march on ballot boxes with avengeance in 2012 to vigorously advance anagenda for reform and fundamental change!

Shell GameBy Thomas Vincent; From The Ethical Spectacle

Interested readers are invited to check out Tom's Political Blog"Certain Doubt

http://www.spectacle.org/0911/vincent.htmlIn an August 14, 2011 New York Times

editorial entitled: Stop Coddling the Super-Rich, Warren Buffett called on Congress pleaded actuallyto raise taxes on the megawealthy:

While the poor and middle class fight forus in Afghanistan, and while most Americansstruggle to make ends meet, we mega-richcontinue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earnbillions from our daily labors but are allowed toclassify our income as carried interest, thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate.Others own stock index futures for 10 minutesand have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15

percent, as if theyd been long-term investors. While on the surface this might seem like

an admirable piece of altruism, Buffets call forhigher taxes on the rich, as noble as it may be,

does nothing to address the real problem in oursociety today: the inequities in our economicsystem that allow billionaires like Buffett toamass their phenomenal wealth in the firstplace. Raising taxes on the super rich, though itwould help raise revenue and reduce the deficit, does nothing to change the rules of the gamethat give those same billionaires hugeadvantages over the average American.

In an August 30th 2011 piece in US Newsand World Report, Tom Sightings presents asclear a summation as you will find of what Imtalking about. In examining Warren Buffetsinvestment in Goldman Sachs for example,Sightings notes:

You, too, could have invested in GoldmanSachs in 2008. But here's the difference betweenyou and Buffett. If you had an extra $12,000,you could have purchased 100 shares ofGoldman common stock at $120 a share.Considering that Goldman had been worth over$200 a share the year before, you might havethought you were getting a pretty good discount. You also would be receiving the Goldmandividend of $1.40 a share, a rate of just over 1percent.

But Buffett had more than $12,000 toinvest. He had $5 billion. So he negotiated amuch better deal. He bought preferred stock thatcame with a special dividend. Instead of 1percent, he negotiated a 10 percent dividend. Sonow every year he receives a check for $500million. Then, only after he gets paid, docommon stockholders get their paltry 1 percent.

This is the real secret to the success ofinvestors like Warren Buffett. With billions ofdollars to throw around, they are able tonegotiate sweetheart deals that not onlyguarantee them a high rate of return, it alsoguarantees that they will get paid beforeordinary folks see a dime in dividends.

Its almost as though you are playingMonopoly and as soon as one player begins toamass a fortune, the game board begins toactually tilt such that money, houses, and

property deeds actually physically slide intotheir lap.So now, three years later, how have we

done? Goldman is selling at roughly $110 ashare, slightly below its 2008 price. If you hadinvested with Buffett, you would have lostabout $1,000. Buffett's lost some capital too, buthe's collected $500 million a year in his specialdividend.

Raising taxes on the super rich is itself ared herring. The real secret, the real scambehind modern Capitalism, is not whether thetax rate on capital gains is 15% or 20% (or evenzero% as one republican presidential candidatehas proposed). The real crime is that once you

get to a certain level of capital accumulation, you are almost assured of amassing an evenmore staggering fortune by virtue of the factthat your vast wealth allows you to not onlydictate to banks and corporations what your rateof return will be, but also to demand that youwill be paid before ordinary shareholders thusreducing your risk to practically nothing.

The rigged nature of the game is even moreinsidious than it appears. As Sightings shows in

his analysis of Buffetts recent investmentinto Bank of America:

Now Buffett is investing in beleagueredBank of America. He invested $5 billion in aspecial preferred stock and will be getting a 6percent dividend, while the regular stock youcan buy pays less than 1 percent. Now I don'tknow whether Bank of America is a good dealat current prices. Maybe it is. But the point is, ifyou buy now, you're not getting the same termsas Buffett. You're just pumping money into hisdividend payment and hoping for the best.

Think about that the next time you openthe financial pages. If youre fortunate enoughto own stock in Bank of America, the fact thatWarren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than hissecretary should not be nearly as galling as thefact that he gets a 6 times higher rate of returnas you do and is guaranteed to receive his

money before you see a dime. Still havingtrouble with this? Consider the numbers in theBOA deal. The math here is not difficult. $5billion at 6% means Warren is getting$300,000,000. If you invest even $10,000 at 1%youll only receive a whopping $100.00! Evenafter taxes (15%) Warren gets $255,000,000 toyour rather pitiful $85 bucks!

This is not to say that Buffets plea forhigher taxes on the rich is not valid. But whereis Buffetts call for fairness in the game ofmaking money itself? It is certainly not fair thatas he has noted, his secretary pays a higher taxrate - and a higher percentage of her income -than he does. But I dont hear Buffett or any

other billionairecomplaining about the factthat they are able to command six times the rateof return that ordinary investors receive andeven less complaints that they get paid beforeeveryone else.

Thus Warren Buffett, while he may seemaltruistic, is really not saying a word aboutchanging the rules of the game which give himan unfair advantage to amass a vast fortune inthe first place.

Hot Off the PressesBush & Obama?

Israeli assassinationsand US PresidentsThere is evidence that in 1991 an Israeli

undercover team planned to assassinate a U.S.

President. The intended victim was George

Herbert Walker Bush. The first person to write

of the plot was a former 11-term Republican

Congressman from Illinois, Paul Findley. In a

1992articlein the Washington Report for Middle

    East Affairs.January 27, 2012, Alison Weir; From Antiwar.comhttp://mycatbirdseat.com/2012/01/bush-obama-israeli-assassinations-and-us-

presidents/On January 13th the Atlanta Jewish Times

featured a column by its owner-publishersuggesting that Israel might someday need toorder a hiton the president of the UnitedStates.

In the column, publisher Andrew Adlerdescribes a scenario in which Israeli PrimeMinister Netanyahu would need to give the go-ahead for U.S. based Mossad agents to take outa president deemed unfriendly to Israel.

The purpose? So that the vice president

could then take office and dictate U.S. policiesthat would help the Jewish state obliterate itsenemies.

Adler writes that it is highly likely that theidea has been discussed in Israels most innercircles.

Numerous Jewish leaders quicklycondemned Adler, who has nowapologizedforthe column, resigned, and there are somereportsthat he plans to put the newspaper up for sale.An Israeli columnistnotedthat the hatred beingstirred up against Obama is similar to conditionsin Israel that led to the murder of Israeli PrimeMinister Yitzhak Rabin by a Jewish extremist.

Many of those criticizing Adler claim thathe had defamed Israel by suggesting that itwould ever do such a thing. Abe Foxman, headof the Jewish Anti-Defamation League (ADL)proclaimed: There is absolutely no excuse, no

justification, no rationalization for this kind ofrhetoric. It doesnt even belong in fiction.

In reality, however, Adlers expectationthat Israels inner circles have explored such acourse of action, and would be willing toundertake it, may be entirely accurate. The factis that Israel has killed and plotted toassassinatepeople throughout the world; a number havebeen Americans. One alleged plot was chillinglysimilar to Adlers suggestion.

    Secret Service warned of Israeli

assassination plansThere is evidence that in 1991

an Israeli undercover team planned toassassinate a U.S. President. Theintended victim was George HerbertWalker Bush.

The first person to write of theplot was a former 11-termRepublican Congressman fromIllinois, Paul Findley. In a 1992

articlein the Washington Report for MiddleEast Affairs, Findley described the allegedscheme and how it was revealed.

Findley writes that the U.S. Secret Servicehad received a warning that elements of Israelsspy agency might target Bush when he went toMadrid for the opening day of the peaceconference to be held that year.

According to Findley, a former Mossadagent named Victor Ostrovsky who had writtenabookexposing Israels spy agency told agroup of Canadian parliamentarians that he hadreceived secret intelligence suggesting that thethe Mossad's hatred of Bushand support forVice President Dan Quaylemight lead to anattempt on the president's life.

Israel considered Quayle much closer toIsrael than Bush. Bush had particularly angeredIsrael by attempting to pressure Israel intoending its illegal settlement expansion onconfiscated Palestinian land by withholdingloan guaranteesuntil Israel ended this practice.

Findley writes that Ostrovskys statementswere relayed to Findleys friend and formercolleaguePaul Pete McCloskey, a prominentformer Republican Congressman fromCalifornia who had recently been named byBush to the National and Community ServiceCommission.

McCloskey, a decorated Marine veteranand graduate of Stanford law school who had atone time been considered a presidentialcontender, flew to Ottawa to debrief Ostrovskyin person and evaluate his information.

Findley reports that Ostrovsky toldMcCloskey that the Mossad wanted "to doeverything possible to preserve a state of warbetween Israel and its neighbors, assassinatingPresident Bush, if necessary." Ostrovsky saidthat a PR campaign was already underway inboth Israel and the United States to "preparepublic acceptance of Dan Quayle as president."

Convinced that Ostrovsky was legitimateand his information significant, McCloskey

jumped on the next flight to Washington, wherehe reported Ostrovskys intelligence to theSecret Service and State Department.

The apparent plot never went forward, perhaps because Ostrovsky and McCloskey hadgiven it away.

Ostrovsky gave more details about the plottwo years later in his 1994 book, The OtherSide of Deception: A Rogue Agent Exposes theMossad's Secret Agenda, published byHarperCollins.

In the book Ostrovsky writes that anextremist group within Mossad was responsiblefor the plan. He says they kept the plan secret

from then Israeli Prime MinisterYitzhakShamir, though they believed that Shamir wouldhave ordered such a hit himself if he hadntbeen constrained by politics. In the lead-up toIsraels 1948 founding war, Shamir had headedup a terrorist group known for itsassassinations.

In hisreviewof Ostrovskys book,Ambassador Andrew Killgore, a retired careerforeign service officer and publisher of theWashington Report, called the book aninsider's probing expos of some Middle East

realities that have been hidden too long from allbut Israeli eyes.

Ostrovsky writes that the Israelis planned afalse flag operation in which they would pinthe assassination on Palestinians. Theykidnapped three Palestinian militants fromBeirut who were to be the scapegoats, tookthem to Israel's Negev desert, and held themincommunicado.

Meanwhile, Killgore writes, Mossad-generated threats on the president's life, seemingly from Palestinians, were leaked. These were designed to throw suspicion on theorganization of rogue Palestinian terrorist AbuNidal. Names and descriptions of the threeterrorists were leaked to Spanish police so that,if the plot was successful, blame wouldautomatically fall on them.

Ostrovsky reports that after theassassination plot was eventually cancelled, thethree Palestinian prisoners were terminated.

Targeting AmericansIf the plot had gone forward, this would

not have been the first time that Israel targetedAmericans for death. Nor would it be the firstfalse flag operation.

In 1954 the Mossad planned to firebombAmerican installations, libraries, and othergathering places in Egypt. The Muslim

Brotherhood was to be blamed for the attacks, thus causing American animosity toward Egypt. An accidental early detonation of one of thedevices caused the plot, known as theLavonAffair, to unravel before it could kill or mutilatethe intended Americans.

In 1967 Israeli air and sea forcesperpetrated an almost two-hour assault in whichthey tried to sink aUS Navy shipwith a crew of294. While the attack failed to sink the ship, itsucceeded in killing 34 Americans and injuring174. Some analysts have conjectured that thiswas also a false-flag operation; it is highlylikely that Egypt would have been blamed forthe attack if the ship had gone down.

In 1973 Israeli fighter pilots were orderedto shoot down an unarmedU.S. reconnaissanceplane(at the time the U.S. was deliveringmassive weaponry to Israel to prevent it fromlosing the Yom Kippur war with Egypt andSyria). While the Israelis were unable to reachthe altitude of the U.S. plane, they did managethat same year to shoot down acivilian Libyanairlinerthat had strayed over Israeli territory, killing 104 men, women, and children. One wasan American.

In 1990 a Canadian-American scientist andfather of seven,Gerald Bull, was assassinated inBelgium. All indications are that it was an

Israeli Mossad hit team that drilledfive bulletsinto the back of his head and neck. (Israel hasassassinated a number of scientists of variousnationalities. The most recent is a32-year-oldIranian father with a young son.)

In 2003 it came out that Israeli leaders hadofficially decided to undertake assassinationoperations onU.S. soil. An FBI spokesman, queried about the Israeli plans, said only: "Thisis a policy matter. We only enforce federallaws."

In recent years a growing number ofAmerican peace activistshave beenintentionally killed, maimed, and injured byIsraeli forces, including 23-year-old RachelCorrie, 21-year-old Brian Avery, 37-year-oldTristan Anderson, 21-year-old EmilyHenoschowitz, and 21-year-oldFurkan Dogan.

All of this has been minimally reported inthe U.S. press. While major news media fromEnglandtoIsraeltoAustraliacovered the

Jewish Times apparent endorsement of apossible Israeli assassination of a U.S.President, the scandal has been largely missingfrom U.S. media. Even Atlantas AP bureauinexplicably initially decided not to write areport on it, only finally sending out a storymany days later.

Such news omissions concerning Israelipartisans are not rare. In 2004 a fanatic Israelloyalist wrote a letter saying that he was goingto burn downPresbyterian churcheswhileworshippers were inside (he was furious at thePresbyterian Churchs decision to divest fromcompanies profiting from the illegal Israelioccupation of Palestinian land). This grislythreat also received minimal media play.

Despite Israeli violence against Americans(even while American taxpayers have givenIsrael far more ofour tax moneythan to any

other nation) American presidential candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, continue to vieover who is most devoted to Israel.

It is ironic that Adler considers Obama sobad for Israel, given thatIsraeli analystshaverated him second only to Mitt Romney in hisfidelity to Israel. And Obama has now releaseda seven-minutevideothat may catapult our firstAfrican-American president into first place inpandering to anapartheidnation.

But perhaps hell be safe from assassins.References
