Unsung Heroes -- Rwanda and Lewis Wynder

The Metro Atlanta Chapter has identified classes that all disaster volunteers are required to take for their basic disaster training. Classes include instructor lead training and web based training. Classes take place on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout the year. For more information on Disaster University contact [email protected].

thing you know, Lewis was popping up all over the place. Now Lewis is a lead in DAT Responses, coordinates and executes logistical support for Home Fire Campaigns, works with fleet management, and anything else that needs to be done in the moment. We never imagined that when Rwanda joined the Red Cross family, we would receive Lewis as a bonus. These amazing people are just two of the volunteers working tirelessly in mission delivery, and what makes them special is that they are tied up in the same beautiful ribbon on the gift they are to us.

The Wynders – Lewis and Rwanda Wynder are a gift to the Red Cross. Rwanda started last year as a casework intern with the American Red Cross of Metro Atlanta. Shortly after completing her internship, she accepted a staff position as a Disaster Program Specialist (DPS). That is when the fun really got started! Her Husband of 39 years, Lewis Wynder, just couldn’t stay behind when she responded to DAT calls. Next

Unsung Heroes -- Eric CorlissEric Corliss – As a Red Cross staff member for more than 19 years, Eric and his family have lived all over the country. The Corliss family has been in Georgia now for 20 months. Recently, Eric was requested to support the South Carolina flooding event. What started out as “a couple of weeks” deployment turned into a month long experience. During that process, not only did we miss him in our daily activities, he left behind a family (wife Allison, and daughters Emily and Abbey). Many of our volunteers and staff leave our state to support other areas of the country, making a huge commitment to our mission. However, it comes at a cost to the family that is left behind. For the Corliss family, this cost has been paid many many times through the years and often comes in increments of several weeks and even months at a stretch. As we are in the holiday season, we are reminded how important family is. We also are reminded that the families of our Red Crossers make a very significant contribution. They give up their family members to support the mission. Some loan their loved ones to us in small pieces of time, a few hours or days and sometimes for many weeks. It is a significant commitment and gift.
