Entertainment• In today's world the choices, for entertainment, are limited only by our

imagination. Just think about all our electronic options to start with; television, movies, videos and DVD's radio, CD's, MP3 payers, computers and the internet, video games. None of these existed during the Renaissance, but that doesn't mean there was no entertainment available. Renaissance people were also limited only by their imagination.

Instead of movies and TV there were storytellers. At a time when few people could read or write, story telling was a way to teach lessons and preserve history; family history as well as community history. Families would sit around the fire at night and tell stories to each other. Some people made their living traveling from place to place and entertaining all the people in a manor with stories. Stories were also a way for people to learn about far away places, people and events.

Games

• One of the Renaissance games was chess. It was played in Florence at least as early as the beginning of the 14th Century; for there is record of that date of the murder of a certain Brunelleschi, while engaged in the game.

• A game of strength and skill was Pome, and was for a time held in high esteem. It consisted in throwing a spear, while running, at a suspended apple.

• From this partial enumeration we may conclude that the Renaissance games were offering people an agreeable pastime. They made people exercise, and they instilled energy, independence, and manhood.

Jousting

The History of jousting started with the emergence of Knights as a fighting force in Europe of the Middle Ages in the 10th century. The history of the tournament and jousting started as a means for knights to practise his horsemanship skills and his prowess with the use of a lance - a weapon used by knights during the Middle Ages.

History of chess

• Chess is a board game played between two players. It is played on a chessboard, which is a square-checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. At the start, each player controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in "check") and there is no way to remove or defend it from attack on the next move.

Tragedy & Comedy

Tragedy and comedy• Comedy tragedy theatre masks are something we have all seen. You cannot spend more

than a few moments in theatre life without being confronted with the two masks. • For most of us the two masks are all we need to see to know that we are looking at

something theatre related. • And yet, how many of us know the origins of these masks that all of us recognize so

easily?• Comedy tragedy theatre masks, like the concepts of comedy and tragedy in theatre were

born in ancient Greece. • Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ the Greeks were immersed in a culture that

held the theatre as, not only a form of entertainment, but as an integral part of their religious framework.

• Whenever a theatre festival came to a Greek town there was always a great number of ceremonies that were always present. In the evenings there would be a group of men who would wander the streets, along with a musician. This group would be called a "comus" and their fun songs a "comoedia". It doesn't take much to see where our word "comedy" derived.
