It’s great knowing after the event (ask anyone) and that is just what Strathclyde Police have in mind as they continue their crackdown on Crime, Violence and Anti-social behaviour during their ongoing initiative in North East Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire. Speaking to Chief Inspector Pat O’Callaghan earlier this week the Re-Gen heard that latest results are certainly proving that “Operation Neptune” is making a big impact in the East End. Insp. O’Callaghan told our reporter that during the operation, the number of assaults, robberies and reports of youth related and alcohol fuelled disorder have been driven down due the robust targeting of known offenders. Mr O’Callaghan added “ Local officers have focused on the areas of concern identified by the residents of the communities in this area. The police presence has remained visible and vigilant and the results are now beginning to show” Over 220 focused policing operations have resulted in over 6000 stop/searches in B division. Nearly 900 of them have been positive. In excess of 300 anti-social behaviour fixed penalty notices have been issued for offences ranging from disorderly behaviour, urinating in public and street drinking. Other positive outcomes include a prostitution operation which resulted in 9 arrests of both prostitutes and their clients. Over 130 people have been charged with drugs offences ranging from possession to class A drug dealing. One offender was found loitering near a block of flats in the area in possession of a large quantity of class “A” drugs and a concealed knife. In the Royston area 5 people were arrested in connection with alleged drugs offences and a 44year old man was arrested for alleged possession of a number of offensive weapons and alleged theft. 84 vehicles were stopped and searched resulting in 17 offences being detected with 2 vehicles being taken off the road. Chief Inspector O’Callaghan stated “ This is the reason we have a robust stop and search policy. Decent members of our communities do not want armed drug dealers hanging around in their streets. They expect them to be challenged by the police. That is our job and that is what we will continue to do during “Operation Neptune”. People need to feel safe and secure in B Division. That is our priority” Look out for more updates in the Re-Gen as “Operation Neptune” continues to unfold.

“NEPTUNE” IS A WINNERMANY Punters last Saturday took the tip that the Re-Gen inadvertently gave for the winner of the Grand National, Neptune Collonges and we say inadvertently as our front page story in the last issue referred to “Operation Neptune”. LOCAL CHILDREN RELISH CHANCE TO HONE CYCLING SKILLS ON NEW EAST END ROADChildren from four primary schools in the east end were this week given the chance to try out the newest section of The Clyde Gateway (the East End Regeneration Route) before it opens to traffic at the end of April. More than 100 Primary 6 and 7 pupils from St Michael’s, St Anne’s, Dalmarnock and Quarrybrae primary schools were given the freedom to cycle and take part in an obstacle course set up on part of the new stretch of road that runs from Oatlands new neighbourhood, over Rutherglen Bridge, through Dalmarnock to Gallowgate. The children experienced first hand the route’s new cycling facilities including dedicated cycle lanes on the carriageway and extended footway that are provided along the full length of the route. They also got a chance to brush up on their safety skills with Glasgow City Council road safety officers and Strathclyde Police cyclists and motorcyclists, while Dr Bike was offering advice on maintaining bikes and giving practical demonstrations to

ensure they are fit for the road. As well as providing better facilities for cyclists the new road, funded entirely by the council, will also improve public transport links and accessibility around the east end, opening up the area and benefiting businesses and residents alike. To be officially named The Clyde Gateway when it is opened to traffic (Thursday 26 April), the road will bring development and employment opportunities to the city and is a key piece of infrastructure associated

with Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. With phase one opened as part of the Oatlands new neighbourhood development last year, phase two of the 2.4km stretch runs over Rutherglen Bridge, continues via Dunn Street, Poplin Street, Dalmarnock Road, Mordaunt Street, London Road and Camlachie to join the existing road network at the Parkhead bypass Forge Retail Park.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Titanic Exhibition at Provan Hall HouseAs many local residents know, Provan Hall House is a 15th Centuary Mansion House which sits in the heart of Easterhouse within Auchinlea Park and is one of Glasgows hidden gems. The House itself is steeped in history, and the Friends of Provan Hall run guided tours and hold many events through out the year to keep the history of the house alive with fun and accessible for people of all ages. The event that is currently running in this great venue is about the Titanic and many people may wonder why Provan Hall House would host this event, but the fact of the matter is that Provan Hall House has a wonderful connection to the Titanic. The first caretaker at Provan Hall was appointed back in 1955 by the National Trust of Scotland, and his name was Harold Sydney Bride. Harold was one of the operators on the Titanic and following the tragedy which occurred 100 years ago this week, Harold thankfully survived. He came to Scotland and married a Scottish girl, and in 1955 brought his wife and family to Provan Hall. The exhibition looks at the wireless facilities and charts the journey of the ill-fated ship amongst other details of the voyage. The Event is running for three

weeks and is open to the public, free of charge.

There is a small cafe where you are able to buy tea coffee and some hot or cold snacks, for futher information contact, Linda or Stevie on 0141/773/1202.

BAILLIESTON CARE HOME AIMS HIGHStaff from Baillieston Care Home are setting off on an adventure which they hope will help to raise funds for the Social side of things for the residents at the Muirhead Road complex in Baillieston. Ten of the staff are assembling on the 26th May to try and

climb to the top of Ben Nevis and each one will hopefully be sponsored. The cash raised will go towards getting entertainment and activities for the benefit of those residents who are based in the home. Anyone interested in this cause and feels they could spare a

few bob in sponsorship should contact Angela Reid (Baillieston Care Home manager), on 0141 773 0733. This is an ideal chance to bring a little joy into the lives of the residents so get digging deep and contact Angela to pledge your support.

THOMAS COOK RAISES £200 FOR ABERLOURCOLLEAGUES at a local branch of Thomas Cook have raised more than £200 for two charities, Aberlour and the ROC Children’s Charity. The team from the branch at the Forge Shopping Centre in Glasgow were fundraising at the shopping centre on Thursday 29 March and generous shoppers helped to raise the much-needed funds for Aberlour/

ROC Children’s Charity. Aberlour is the largest, solely Scottish children’s charity which provides help to more than 6,000 of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families each year. Branch manager Alison McNaught said: “We really wanted to be able to support

a local charity and we are very grateful to the generosity of shoppers in the local area who have supported our fundraising.”

ANYONE who answers the telephone in their place of work or even in the confines of their own home must surely be sick to the back teeth with the opening line of a particular call. “This is an important message about being mis-sold insurance/protection by banks.....”. Almost half the day is now being taken up with

these random telephone calls which instead of attracting your attention, just makes your blood boil. If anyone out there doesn’t realise now that there is a method of recompense available (and has been for the past year at least), then they don’t deserve any money back. To be interrupted by the constant spiel about how

you can claim money back becomes a bit of a bore now and there is no way you can get these random calls barred. Even shouting down the phone makes no difference because it is a tape and although you feel a bit daft it at least releases your feelings. So do us all a favour PPI people, PLEASE PACK IT IN!!!

Hi everyone.. Thank goodness Easter is over. A huge sigh of relief could be heard over Glasgow on Monday as all the weans were back at school. I don’t know about you but I feel all summery. Must be the longer nights. I was chatting to an Australian friend the other day and it reminded me of a really great day spent sitting in their garden being waited on hand and foot…heehee. It also reminded me of the great dishes she had made. So try out this wee taste of Australia it really is good.

Chilli Avocado PrawnsPeeled king prawns1 carrot peeled and cut into very thin matchsticks1 red onion sliced wafer thinly1 clove of garlic crushed1 tsp of crushed ginger1 or 2 fresh chillies chopped into tiny dice…discard the seeds2tbsp sweet chilli sauce1tsp oil

Fry off the onion carrot ginger and garlic in the oil for 3-4 min. Add the chilli sauce and prawns and stir quickly until prawns are cooked through. Halve the avocado s and remove skin and stone. Slice and serve with the warm prawns poured over.

Salt and Pepper Steaks1 Large steak per personSaltPepperOil for brushing

Brush a little oil over one side of the steak and season really well. Fry seasoned side down in a searing hot pan for 3-4 min. Whilst the first side is cooking brush the other with oil and again season really well. When steak is almost cooked to your liking remove from the pan onto a warm plate and cover with foil. Allow at least 4 min before slicing along the grain before serving.

Sliced creamy potatoes

Boiled potatoes 1 small tub of single cream2 tbsp of parmesan cheese

Slice the potatoes thickly in the bottom of an oven proof dish. Stir the cheese into the cream and pour over the potatoes and season well. Bake uncovered in a hot oven 190c for about 20 min until bub-bling and golden brown.

Honey Mustard salad

1 bag of mixed salad leaves3 tbsp of honey.1 tbsp of mustard.2 tbsp of olive oil1tsp of vinegarSalt and Pepper.

Combine all the ingredients into an old glass screw top jar and shake really well. Our over the salad.

Rum soaked Madeleine cakes

1 packet of ready Madeleine Rum

Pour a little rum into a flat dish and arrange the Madeleine cakes in one layer. Pour over a little more rum and set aside in the fridge Before serving sprinkle with brown sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream.

BACK in January this year saw the first intake of 20 local young people from the Clyde Gateway and surrounding areas start the training programme dedicated to providing the necessary experi-ence, skills and quali-fications to guarantee interviews for the jobs at the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velo-drome. The programme has proved very successful so much so that a second intake is earmarked for Tuesday May 8th. Thanks to a Partnership between Clyde Gateway and Glasgow Life young persons completing the programme will auto-matically be guaranteed an interview for the position of Leisure Attendants at the new venues in Springfield Road/London Road. The new facility will be one of the biggest and best in Europe and while some of

the experienced staff will be transferred from other centres across the city there will be opportunities for 55 new recruits to take their places as the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games approach. Positive outcomes from the initial January intake are that 4 individuals have already gained employ-ment and although 2 of the group dropped out of the original 20 the other

14 have now completed 2 weeks work experience in Glasgow Sports Centres across the city and the feedback across the board from centre managers has been fantastic. All 14 will now be inter-viewed by Glasgow Sport in the coming weeks for positions in the Arena. For more details on the pro-gramme please check out the main advert on page 14 of this paper.

Jobs Boost continues as NISA recruits again

Dear Re-Gen, Miller Homes development at BailliestonI read your front page story, Planning decision could mean even less for Baillieston (23/3/12) with dismay. You appear to have taken the comments of one local councillor who was not even at the Planning Applications Committee and distorted the situation into some kind of ‘party politics’ issue. The only ‘party politics’ of the Planning Applications Committee that should be questioned is why so few Labour councillors attend this important Council meeting. Where were Cllr Coleman’s chums when this important application was be-ing decided? Found wanting

as per usual. The Committee as a whole were concerned that the de-velopment was over-loading its housing development and paying little regard to the environmental considerations raised in objections from the community. I seconded a mo-tion to continue the matter so that there was a fuller com-mittee to discuss the issue. This was voted down by Cllr Coleman’s chums. Therefore, a decision had to be made that day. Frankly, the devel-oper didn’t bother to turn up and speak to their application so based on the information available to Committee mem-bers at the time we rejected the proposal. This is a regular occurrence at this Committee and developers invariably

return to the table with a development that is more in fitting with the Committee’s expectations. I have every confidence that Miller Homes will return to the table with an enhanced development and that Baillieston will ben-efit enormously. Furthermore, as Convener of the Bailli-eston, Shettleston & Greater Easterhouse Local Housing Forum for the past 3 years, I have never seen Cllr Coleman at a single meeting. If housing was such a concern to him, why does he not come to the appropriate forumof which he is a member? Yours faithfully Cllr Grant Thoms (Ward 21)

Right to Reply . . .

Dear Re-Gen,

As a point of clarification concerning the recent front page story (issue 76 Friday 23rd March), with regards to the Miller Homes development that was refused by the Planning Committee at the behest of the Scottish National Party and other Opposition Parties. I would point out that the reason some of the Labour

Councillors were not present was that three of them were on the interview panel for the post of Executive Director of Development and Regeneration Services. Plus another Member tended her apologies as she was unwell. However, the main issue, as Miller Homes pointed out, was that the decision was completely “irrational” as the Council has already agreed the new neighbourhood

proposals. That means all political parties agreed.Environmental issues, roads etc are discussed at the detailed planning stage. Everyone is well aware of that, as it is common practice. I trust you will publish this letter in your next issue.

Regards Cllr Jim Coleman (Ward 20)

Blackhill Bowling Club mem-bers, Thomas Barbour and his mate Charlie Spiers have been active in their fund raising activities for those taking part in the “Special Olympics” for the past two years and so far they have accumulated over £5000 through various events. Signed Football tops,

Raffles and collections have all raised the cash and just this week Thomas popped into the Re-Gen offices in Baillieston to ask if we could say a few thanks via the pa-per, which we are delighted to do. Those he would like to thank include, John Kerr and his colleagues plus all the

women members at Black-hill Bowling Club for their continued support, Gordon Turner and the members at Claremont BC (Milngavie), Bill McVey and the team at Castlemilk Indoor Bowling club, McLeans Funeral Direc-tors and all the members at Parkhead Bowling Club. At the moment Thomas is in

training for a 10K run and he also has a 12 hour sponsored bowl arranged for June at Blackhill Bowling Club. Meanwhile anyone wishing to donate or sponsor some of the events coming up should contact Thomas on 07922-475400. Keep it up the pair of you You are doing a great job.

Local Men are “Special” HeroesWITH local council elec-tions taking place 3 May, Glasgow City Council is urging voters in the city to make sure they are ready to have their say. “Now’s the time to make sure you have rep-resentation in the council election,” said George Black, the council’s Chief Executive and Returning Officer for the election. “Make sure you are reg-istered to vote, especially if you have changed your name or moved house this year. If you are not regis-tered to vote by 18 April you will not be eligible to vote on 3 May and if you want to vote by post or proxy, rather than by go-ing to the polling station, then this is the time to sort that out too. “Residents can print off the relevant form from www.glasgow.gov.uk/elections, or call 0141 287 4444. It just takes a few minutes, but you need to act now. We don’t want

anyone to miss their chance to have a say in how Glasgow is run.” Many residents also take advantage of the numer-ous holidays in April and May and may not be at home to cast their vote. However, they can ensure their voice is still heard by applying to vote by post or by proxy. The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 18 April and the latest date to apply for a proxy vote is 25 April. Andy O’Neill, Head of the Scotland Office at the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog said: “Even if you will be away on holi-day, or think you might be caught up in work you can make sure you have your say by applying to vote by post or proxy.” Forms are available from the council’s website www.glasgow.gov.uk/elections or the Elec-toral commission’s website www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

WHERE WILL YOU BE ON THURSDAY 3 MAY?

EAST End singing sensa-tion John Fori has just released his latest Album entitled “Motown for the Soul” which features some excellent classics including, “You’re my First, My Last, My Ev-erything, Love Train and I’ll go where the Music takes Me”. The new CD is a culmi-nation of hard work by John and he was assisted by Glasgow favourites Robert and May Miller as he searched the music lists to find songs that mean a lot to him. The 14 track CD was launched last Sunday in 26 Hope Street where John has been the resident singer for a couple of years and it was a packed house as many of his fans heard about the launch and went along to show their support. Initial responses to the CD indicate that this will be the best John Fori has released so far as he was inundated with orders on the night. Not only that John has recently commissioned

Bob Lyle to set up a web-site so that any fans (or indeed any others), can keep on track with where John is perform-ing throughout the area. The address of the new web-site is http://www.johnfori.com/ and it is be-ing updated as we speak. Congratulations on your new release John and we at the Re-Gen tip it for the top. John Fori is appearing at 26 Hope Street Glasgow every Saturday afternoon so why not take a trip along and hear the man himself performing live, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

CARMYLE man Walter Smith who some of you may know as former Rangers and Scot-land manager was delighted to be presented with the Sport Award for services to football and for outstanding personal contributions to the City of Glasgow at a ceremo-ny held in the City Chambers recently. “The Lord Provost’s Awards Evening” was Lord Provost Bob Winter’s last official public event before he steps down from office after five years as Glasgow’s First Citizen. River City star Johnny Beattie received the Loving Cup, which is the city’s high-est honour, to mark his long

and distinguished career in the entertainment and theat-rical profession. Other recipi-ents of medals from the Lord Provost included, Dame Elish Angiolini (Services to the Law and Justice), Robert Booth (Public Services Award) and Bailie Jean McFadden for ser-vices to Local Government. The Lord Provost told the Re-Gen, “This event truly is one of the most reward-ing for me as the city’s Lord Provost. It is such a great occasion and to be able to honour people from diverse walks of life and who all have one thing in common – a commitment to Glasgow and its people. “I can think of no

better way to express our gratitude to these outstand-ing men and women by cel-

ebrating their achievements this way and in presenting them with an award.

Charity night raises funds for Sands LAST month, local resident Sta-cey Lamb, held a charity night for Glasgow Sands in Shettleston Juniors social club. Glasgow Sands are a stillborn/ neo-natal death charity which tries to help raise awareness of stillborn/ neonatal deaths. On the evening there was a raffle with fantastic gifts, which raised over one thousand pounds. Stacey told our reporter it had been a fantas-tic night with a great DJ, who catered for all tastes in music, plus there were also two amazing dancers who stole the show. All profits went to Sands Glasgow. Stacey’s reasons for run-ning this charity night were due to her tragically losing her baby boy Daniel last year, and to raise awareness for this tremendous charity organisa-tion who were there for her and gave valued support during her loss. Stacey said “ I wanted to give something back by helping to raise money for them.

I also wanted to raise awareness and let people know that there is great support and help out there for still-born/ neonatal deaths”. She continued, “Sands are a truly exceptional charity, they run a support group every month and also have a phone line for individuals who need support day and night through such traumatic times. They also donate lovely memory boxes to all maternity hospitals to give to parents who have lost babies, for them to take home and keep all their babies little things in them.” Stacey hopes her story can bring help to lots of parents out there who have had the misfortune and heartbreak of losing a baby. As she says, “ The loss of a baby doesn’t just affect the parents, it affects the

extended family and friends as well.” “Fly High Angel Babies...Gone but not Forgotton.”

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

Pupils from Eastbank Primary are celebrating after winning the Sustainable School award at the Grow Green Awards ceremony. The Grow Green awards, organised by Playbusters, celebrate all the inspiring Eco work being carried out by schools, businesses, groups and individuals in the east and north east of the city. Eastbank Primary gained recognition for their continued promotion of sustainability issues over the years which resulted in it becoming the first school in the east of Glasgow to achieve the highly coveted 4th Green Flag. The school has created grow-ing spaces for fruit, herbs and vegetables and reinstated a wildlife pond. They also pro-mote ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ at school and at home. Head teacher Gayle Harris, said: “We are all delighted to win the award. Everyone – staff, pupils and teachers – work very hard on eco issues and it is wonderful to have this recognised in such a way. “The entire school commu-nity take their eco work very seriously and have great fun doing it. The pupils aim to keep their Glasgow greener for a long time to come.” For more information on the school’s eco work please con-

GLASGOW East Womens Aid took over the audi-torium at the Bridge in Easterhouse to perform a fantastic play written and directed by the children and young people from GEWA, called “Through the Eyes of a Child”. The children were tremendous and certainly tugged at the heart-strings of the audience as they re-lated stories that everyone should be made to listen to. Tam Baillie (Scotland’s Commissioner for Children

and Young People) opened the day with a presenta-tion and this was followed with “Ben’s Story” told by Dr. Mairead Tagg of GEWA. There was then multi cul-tural dancers and a fashion show prior to lunch. During the lunch break there was face-painting, Balloon making and glitter tattoos on offer for the kids and in the second part of the day Ch Insp. Graham Goulding did a presentation followed by a talk from Moira Sugden

(Seasons National Co-ordinator, then came the highlight of the show with the children performing the play. The Event closed with asinging from the children and young people prior to balloons being released to symbolise empowerment for them in having their voice. Overall the staff and members of GEWA should take great credit in what was a certainly a very suc-cessful event.

If you require transport to the Hustings Event please contact your local Housing Association.

Because we are led by local people and held accountable by them, our services are highly responsive to community needs and our housing investment has been sustainable. This contrasts with previous “top down” approaches to area regeneration where major investment was often followed by demolition and the break-up of communities.

Easterhouse’s Community Based Social Housing Providers have a community-controlled approach to housing delivery. Local management and local solutions are critical in Easterhouse, because of the deep-rooted disadvantage and social problems that affect our communities. All eight organisations have gone beyond their original purpose as housing providers and are making a substantial impact in addressing the wider regeneration needs of local communities. The eight EHRA members are: Blairtummock Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/Blairtummock Calvay Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/Calvay Easthall Park Housing Co-operative www.easthallpark.org.ukGardeen Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/GardeenLochfield Park Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/Lochfield-Park Provanhall Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/ProvanhallRuchazie Housing Association www.scottishhousingconnections.org/HA/Ruchazie Wellhouse Housing Association www.wellhouseha.org.uk

BENEFIT WELFARE REFORM

LOCAL CAB SAYS ‘WELFARE REFORMS’ HITTING THE MOST VULNERABLEThe recession has battered households across Glasgow, and we’ve seen a huge increase in the numbers of people needing advice on financial issues, like debt and rent/mortgage arrears. But one of the biggest issues is the people who have been caught in the government’s plans to reform the benefits system. The theory is that the country spends too much on welfare, and that many benefit claimants could actually

work. So, clever people in the government say that if they

stop giving money to benefit claimants they will all go out and get jobs. That’s the theory. But here at the CAB we see the reality every day, and the

reality is that the government’s approach is pushing some of the

most vulnerable people in our society into poverty and misery.

For one thing, there are no jobs out there and for another, the

vast majority of people who are on benefits are actually genuine. The media picture of the scrounger who

is working the system is actually a very tiny minority. I don’t defend them – they should be caught and should absolutely have their benefits removed. But the trouble is that, in chasing that minority, the government is catching out the huge numbers of people who are actually genuinely in need. I’m talking about the sick, elderly, disabled people and young people with no skills and dependence problems. Believe it or not, these people don’t want to be on benefits. It’s not a lifestyle of luxury. To cut their meagre income yet further is making their problems worse. One of the main welfare reforms has been to replace Incapacity Benefit with something called Employment Support Allowance (ESA). It sounds like a nice name. What it means is that if you are too sick or disabled to work, you have to go to a medical assessment to prove you are not a fraud. And these assessments have been shown to be deeply flawed and mis-judging all sorts of very ill people, telling them they have to get a job. Severely disabled people,

those suffering from cancer or MS – thousands are being turned off this conveyer belt and stamped ‘fit for work, get a job’. They can appeal against the decision but this takes months and is deeply distressing for them – we’ve seen cases where people are in tears. Some have talked of suicide. Contribution Based ESA is also set to end after one year for people who are on the Work Related Component which will mean a decrease in income for many households.Employment Support Allowance is just one of the benefit reforms. Others are targeting vulnerable people in similar ways for example cuts in Local Housing Allowance. Anyone who is caught out by these problems should come and get help at the CAB – we’ll do all we can to help you. But the government must listen to what we and other charities are saying, and put a stop to these cruel reforms before they do any more damage.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTThe reform to welfare benefits that are being introduced by the Coalition Government will have profound consequences for Glasgow and its citizens.A report by Glasgow City Council in January 2012 estimated that the impact on the City could be as much as £83m a year when all of the proposed reforms have been introduced. The effect of losing this level of income will be widespread. As well as the most vulnerable households seeing their benefits reduce, local shops and services will suffer because people will have less money to spend. There is also a growing fear that the intended reductions to housing benefit and incorporating this within the new Universal Credit will result in greater homelessness as landlords seek to evict tenants because of increased rent arrears. The coming changes to the benefit system pose particular problems for the network of community based housing associations operating within Glasgow. Many of their tenants receive the type of benefits that will be

reduced as part of the welfare reform measures being implemented by the UK Government. They face the dilemma of seeing vulnerable and disadvantaged households having their incomes cut, but at the same time need to ensure that tenants pay their rent. Alan Benson, Director of Milnbank Housing Association explains. “Housing Associations exist to provide good quality accommodation at affordable rents for local people. However, we are about more than just bricks and mortar and most housing associations provide additional support, social and recreational services and are involved in a variety of local economic initiatives. I’m worried that the impact of welfare reform will be that we are no longer able to provide such services. It’s been estimated that placing housing benefit into Universal Credit could increase rent arrears to between 10-15% as tenants will no longer be able to mandate housing benefit directly to their landlord. The temptation for people on meagre incomes to spend their benefit on things other than

rent is obvious, so the likelihood is that we will have to pursue tenants in arrears more vigorously. To place this in context, a 10% level of rent arrears would, for us, amount to £460k. At that level we would struggle to deliver core services such as repairs let alone the additional social services we provide so it therefore seems inevitable that evictions would occur. Consequently, we are trying to ensure that all of our tenants who currently receive benefits get appropriate advice on what the changes mean for them. Our experience so far indicates that most people are completely unaware of the effect that welfare reform will have and given that benefit reform is imminent this is very worrying”.We at the ReGen would agree that people on benefits get advice in order to fully understand the impact of welfare reform. Although many of these reforms are seen as unfair, the fact is they are going to be introduced and that is why the ReGen is trying to alert anyone affected by the changes!

Although many of these reforms are seen as unfair, the fact is they are going to be introduced and that is why the ReGen is trying to alert anyone affected by the changes!

For help & advice with change to your benefits please speak to a member of staff.

On the 3rd of May one of the most crucial elections the city has seen takes place and it is up to each one of us living in the area to ensure we elect the people we feel, can run Glasgow to the best of their ability for the next five years. What we all really want, is to get away from all the “Hype” that seems to gen-erate as the local elections approach with each party proclaiming just how good they would be for the city, BUT, if you are lucky (or unlucky), enough to get one of the prospective can-didates knocking on your door, then ask questions of them. Attend local Hus-tings meetings (there’s one on in The Bridge in Easter-house on Tuesday 24th 7-00pm till 9-00pm) and see just how they re-act to pertinent questions, meet them in the street as they hand out their leaflets and ask just what their plans are for the city, because “This Is Our Glasgow and We Want The Best For It.” There are a few new candidates running in this election and here we highlight some of

them. In the Calton Ward we have Alexander Belic (SNP) and Yvonne Kucuk (Scottish Labour). In the Baillieston Ward we have Austin Sheridan (SNP) and Maria Garrity (Scottish Labour) and in the North East Ward we have Sohan Singh (Scottish Labour), Maureen Burke (Scottish Labour) and a prospec-tive (SNP) candidate who believes that the Re-Gen is only fit for toilet paper. Now it may surprise you that a prospective candi-date standing to represent you in the local elections

would think of attacking YOUR local newspaper in the run up to an election but hey-ho do we care? Yes of course we do!!! So rest assured you will not get a quote from him in the Re-Gen. The Re-Gen has, since its inception been fair to all parties and, if some-one doesn’t agree with a story we print, (which can happen at times), we have a Right to Reply section where they can voice their opinion in a democratic way, but to go on a social network site and refer to

the paper as, “Only fit to

use as toilet paper” is unacceptable to both the Re-Gen and the East End Community as a whole. Back to the election though and as stated at the top of this story, this coming election is crucial to everyone in Glasgow. There is no point in moaning at the way the city is run if we don’t get out and vote, because at the end of the day, it is up to us to elect those we feel can take this great city forward. Both major parties are sitting at the moment looking for excuses to slag off one-

another, whilst many prospective candidates are full of enthusiasm at the thought of repre-senting you in the City Chambers. A few of us have been let down in the past by “Councillors” who after being elected, thought that their job was done and all they had to do was sit in their city centre office and attend a couple of photo calls, then 6 months before the next election, make their presence known again to get re-elected. That sort of behaviour

doesn’t wash anymore. What every voter in Glasgow wants, nay De-mands, is that anyone who is elected in the forthcom-ing election, gives their all for those people who have put them in a position to run the city. This City has a motto that we all should embrace and that is “Let Glasgow Flourish” let’s hope that those who are about to enter the City Chambers in May have the courage to make our great city “Flour-ish” again.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. V

ictoria Crosse

s have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE –

NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St

. Johnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in

such a short space of tim

e

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their e

motions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

is that a vulnerable group of people who

In less than two weeks time, the people of Glasgow will go to the polls to vote in the Glasgow City Council Elections on May 3rd. These elections are vitally important to the future of our great city and indeed, the future of Scotland.

However, the SNP Council Leader Allison Hunter, has stated that if the SNP win control of Glasgow City Council they will use Glasgow as a stepping stone for separation. I don’t believe that Glasgow should be used as a stepping stone to anything. Glasgow is hugely important to Scotland and

Scottish Labour are showing their commitment to Glasgow by putting Glasgow First.

Glasgow Labour have set out 100 ambitious and exciting policies to transform the city. Gordon Mathieson, the Labour Leader in Glasgow, has pledged to extend the free childcare initiative offered to three year olds by up to five months. Affordable and flexible childcare is one of the most important factors in helping the Scottish economy as it allows parents the ability to get a job and it is right that Glasgow Labour

have decided to make it a priority.

Glasgow Labour is also placing jobs and employment at the heart of the manifesto. The party is promising a “Glasgow Guarantee” of a job, training or an apprenticeship to every 16-24 year old in the city – an important step to help prevent another lost generation to youth unemployment at the hand of the Tories.

As well as prioritising jobs, we have announced plans to recast the public services offered by the city council,

with pledges on school building, help for first-time buyers and additional homes for rent, more action on dog fouling, and extra help for pensioners with the costs of heating.

This manifesto shows Glasgow Labour is committed to putting Glasgow First not only on the 3rd May but in the years to follow.

All elections are important but it is vital that the people of the East End come out and vote and show that they will not be used as a stepping stone towards separation.

Make no mistake, this

election is about Glasgow and the people that live here.

Our priority is to take Glasgow forward, building a future as strong as our past and work to improve the lives of people right across this fantastic city.

In Glasgow Labour, we have a record and a vision to be proud of.

Readers may have noticed it’s election time again! For the first time since 1995 Council elections will be on a day all of their own.

On 3rd May you’ll be asked to vote for local councillors to represent your area. The East End is split into a number of wards, three of which are in the Shettleston constituency. They are:

• Calton - sitting Councillor Alison Thewliss and Alexander Belic (Calton includes Dalmarnock, Bridgeton, and across to Parkhead);

• Baillieston - Councillor David

Turner is up for re-election with Austin Sheridan (including Barlanark, Springboig and Greenfield); and

• Shettleston - Councillor John McLaughlin seeks re-election with Sandyhills man, Adam Miller (which includes Parkhead, Tollcross, Carmyle, and Mount Vernon).

Why two candidates in each ward? That’s because in this election you get to vote 1, 2, 3, and so on for candidates in order of preference. Obviously I hope you’ll put 1 and 2 next to your local SNP candidates. Here’s why:

People want the Council to get the basics right – the streets swept, the bins emptied on time and the potholes fixed. An SNP controlled Council will work to get the basics right – it’s what we pay our council tax for. Glasgow – and the East End – deserves better and the SNP can deliver that.

Education is another top priority; so are care services and better support for the army of unpaid carers across the City. An SNP Council will work to improve education. Labour have had their chance – and failed.

We won’t take decisions without consulting the people who are affected by them. Labour has taken the City for granted for far too long. They don’t listen. We will set up a Petitions Committee which will make it easy for you to get your point across to councillors.

So for these reasons – and many more - the choice is clear. Labour have had their chance – they’ve fallen asleep on the job. It’s time for a fresh start with the SNP, moving Glasgow forward. It’s your vote - please use it for the good of the City.

Giving young people the chance to work should be the main concern of every politician during these difficult times. We cannot afford to put the next generation on a jobless scrapheap. That is why I was delighted to see a “Glasgow Guarantee” announced as part of Glasgow Labour’s manifesto for the council elections on the 3rd of May.

This policy means that every 16 – 24 year old in Glasgow will be entitled to an apprenticeship, employment or training. Having this policy shows the ambition and vision that Glasgow needs to help create opportunities for our young people. Tackling youth unemployment will help the entire Glasgow economy and stop the waste of talent that unemployment causes.

Having a job is not just about earning money. The skills learnt and self esteem that come from having a job help make our communities stronger and more prosperous. That is why I am so supportive of this course of action.

Compare this action plan to the SNP’s. They have already said that winning in Glasgow would be “a stepping stone to independence” and have not announced a single

idea on how to tackle youth unemployment.

The Labour Party

believes that giving young people the chance to fulfil their potential should be the number one priority at these elections.

If you would like to

speak to me about this or any other issue then please do not hesitate in getting in contact with me.

Pictured here are the members of Baillieston Bowling Club who celebrate the club’s centenary later this month. Look out in future editions of the Re-Gen for a little of the history of this well known club which nestles in the heart of Swinton.

Unfortunately last week the club was broken into (along with Garrowhill Bowling Club) and it has set the members back a little as they approach their 100 years milestone. Anyone with any information regarding the break-in should contact the local police on 532 4800 or use Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Finnart Forge OnBridgeton based Finnart football club senior team defeated Shawlands 2-0 at the weekend to keep them ticking over as they ap-proach the culmination of another successful season. Manager Phil Blair cast his eyes over Finnart’s Scottish Cup final opponents Geet on Sunday and although the team will certainly give their opponents the respect they deserve after reaching the final, he is quietly confident of lifting the cup for a record time. The final will be held at Almondvale Livingstone on Sunday 6th May at 2-00pm. Best wishes go to the team from everyone at the Re-Gen. Other Finnart scores at the weekend included the under 16’s drawing 4-4 and the under 15’s drawing 2-2.

Happitots Nursery based in Swinton Road Baillieston had a fun day in November last year in aid of their adopted charity Mary’s Meals. The Fun Day came about after staff discov-ered that to feed a child for a whole school year cost only £10.70. Through consultation with the children, parents and staff they decided to have a day which would involve the whole community, and they invited people from the local area along and take part by having stalls. Staff and parents did face painting and tattoos. There was also a bouncy castle, raffles, tombola, home bak-ing etc.... and everyone had a great day as they raised a tremendous sum of £782.00

for Mary’s Meals. The staff and children would like to extend a big THANK YOU to those who donated and helped us on that day. Representatives from Mary’s Meals attended the Happitots Nursery recently to receive a cheque for the sum and praised the Staff and Kids for their endeavours. The Nursery have now launched a Backpack appeal to continue their fund-raising exploits for the charity. Pictured in Photo from left to right Wilma McFarlane, Joanne Troland, Jeanette Hosie, Alastair Neilson (Mary’s Meals), Alan Rogers (Mary’s Meals) and Julie McIlroy, along with some of the pre school children.

Friday 13th April turned out to be a lucky day for Reidvale Ad-venture Play Association (RAPA) as Biggart Baillie LLP, one of Scot-land’s leading law firms, joined their fun afternoon to present a cheque for £1,207. This is to fund places for five Young Volunteers on a Sports Leadership course. The course will run for 12 weeks and will enable the Young Volunteers to work with other children at RAPA, teaching them a variety of different sports and at the same time, the Young Volunteers will also learn some First Aid. Recently voted Law Firm of the Year at the Scottish Law Awards, Biggart Baillie LLP work with a wide range of clients throughout Scotland, the UK and internation-ally, from their offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh, providing legal advice in respect of private cli-ent matters, property, corporate issues, infrastructure, environ-ment and transport and dispute management. By polling all staff on their preferred charities, the Corporate

Social Responsibility group at Biggart Baillie ensures that their policy has a focus on supporting charities that mean something, both in terms of the work that the charities do and their loca-tion. A decision was reached that the chari-ties supported in 2011/2012 would be Cancer Research UK, as a national charity; Freshstart, a homeless charity in Edinburgh; and RAPA, as their Glasgow charity. Carron Rand, a solicitor at Biggart Baillie LLP, who was at RAPA with her colleagues, Jane Butler, David Paton and Kathryn Gormley, explained that Biggart Baillie LLP have been pleased to be able to support their three chosen charities in different ways across the past year. “The opportunity to sponsor the Sports Leadership

course is particularly significant for Big-gart Baillie LLP as there is a very ac-tive sporting social life at Biggart Baillie organised under the name of “Abigail Gilbert Sports”, with many staff getting together to play sports throughout the year, from touch rugby in the summer months to netball over winter.

Biggart Baillie are even sponsor-ing their own 10K this year!” (See http://www.biggartbaillie.co.uk/about-us/news/news-2012/apr-2012/biggart-baillie-sponsors-10k-road-race if you are interested in entering.)

RAPA delivers a wide range of play activities and services to children and young people, including children and young people with additional support needs, and their families and celebrate their 21st birthday later this year. Based in the heart of the Dennistoun Community in Glasgow’s East End, RAPA promotes integrational play to all children and young people ac-cessing their service by providing a wide range of accessible Play Equipment, Play Activities and Play Resources both outdoors and indoors. Carron said “It’s been a fantas-tic afternoon. We have very much enjoyed coming to RAPA to see for ourselves the amazing work that RAPA do and just how much the children who use the facilities

here enjoy themselves! It was also great to have the opportuni-ty to meet the Young Volunteers who will be taking the course, and also to meet their tutor, Paul, to hear more about what the Sports Leadership course will involve. We look forward to hearing how they get on.”

On Friday 6th April Sergeant Gerry Freil from London Rd Community Policing Team was on foot patrol within Gallowgate when he was approached by a member of the public pointing to and stating that 3 males were in possession of a meat cleaver. As Sergeant Freil approached the males they made off. Sergeant Friel was quickly on his radio and summoned immediate back up.Due to the numbers of resources deployed in OPERATION NEPTUNE II, currently keeping the streets of the East End safe, other officers were quickly in hot pursuit. On hearing this broadcast over their radio, PC’s Kydd and

Dickson who were in the area at the time observed 3 males matching the description passed. The Police Officers observed one of the males throw a meat cleaver onto the grass. After a short foot chase the males were apprehended and the weapon recovered. These three males will be kept in custody and subject of the tough new laws which are helping the police and the justice system come down hard on weapon carriers. This is making a real difference in the fight to keep our communities safe.

Local Officers capture knife wielding thief

Plans to make criminals who assault police officers in the line of duty pay for their crimes have been unveiled by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill. The Scottish Government will also consult shortly on proposals for a victims’ surcharge, to create a fund to help the victims of crime. Assault on police officers is an offence and is currently punishable by fines, imprisonment, a Community Payback Order or a compensation order. Between 1 Jan 2010 and 28 Feb 2012 there were 4,890 convictions on charges of assaulting a police officer.Under the new plans, another option would be a ‘restitution order’ which would see criminals pay cash to good causes.

The police scheme could see the proceeds of restitution orders donated to charities to help injured officers back to work such as the Police Benevolent Fund and the Castlebrae treatment centre in Auchterarder. This would see officers assaulted at work receive the very best care, to allow them to quickly return to duty. The orders would not replace the existing arrangements for compensation direct to victims.Ministers aim to bring forward legislation to create restitution orders and a victims’ surcharge in the forthcoming Victims and Witnesses Bill which will also contain a package or measures to support victims more generally.

Local Community Police Officers McDougal and Keenan were on uniform mobile patrol within Gallowgate when they were flagged down by a female stating that she had observed a male attempt to break into her motor vehicle. She informed the officers and

he was making off on foot in the direction of Glasgow Cross and gave them a description. The Local Police Officers alighted from their vehicle and pursued the male on foot towards Glasgow Cross. The male then turned and ran towards the officers and

brandished a knife at them. At this time the Constable McDougal drew his baton and insisted the male stop immediately and put down his weapon. The male was thereafter safely disarmed and informed of his arrest, handcuffed and conveyed to

London Road Police Office. Great work by the officers to keep the community safe.

Police Officers Assaulted while catching HousebreakersOn 10th April PC’s McGrenera and Jenkins were instructed to attend 153 Main Street, Baillieston in relation to an allegation of housebreaking. On arrival officers observed the door to be ajar, concerned for the welfare of persons within they entered the property, loudly identifying themselves as police officers as they did so. On entering living room two males were found, both had their details noted. The police witnesses then informed

they were being detained for interview in relation to a housebreaking. At this time the males became agitated and aggressive. PC McGrenera attempted to take hold of the accused to place him in handcuffs however the male broke away and took up a fighting stance. PC Leslie then attempted to take hold of the male’s left hand however the accused swung a punch at the PC Leslie’s face which was duly blocked. PC Leslie

drew his baton and shouted for the accused to desist. The accused then lunged toward a table covered with glasses as if to pick one and use it as a weapon. PC McGrenera drew his CS Spray and warned the accused to desist. The accused failed to desist and one short burst of CS Spray was deployed having an immediate effect. The accused was drawn to the ground and handcuffed to the rear. The accused continued to shout and swear and

lash out with arms and legs. Safety information relating to the effects of CS Spray was reiterated to the accused, he was then placed into a marked cell van. After further enquiry both accused were charged with Housebreaking, the accused McKenzie was further charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Both were held custody for court. This is a routine example of the dangers that police Officers face on a daily basis.

SCOTTISH YOUTH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

GLASGOW NIGHTINGALE CYCLING CLUB

TWICE-weekly sessions (Wednesday and Sunday) have proved hugely popular with East End-based club members, who can also enjoy a series of events in the form of time trials against the clock. Membership features a wide range of abilities, from beginners’ level to those successful racers, who compete at open competitions organised by other clubs. Nightingale have already staged the Annual Lake APR Race (Male), which attracted a field of 79, while 36 competed for the APR Feminine - one of the few women-only races in the Scottish Calendar. Glorious spring sunshine marked the ladies’ race and the climb up to Thornhill took its toll on several riders. Penny Phillips (Moray Firth C.C.) finally edged off Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh) and Gabriella Nordin (Sandy Wallace Cycles) to finish in second place. Rhona Grant (Dooley’s Cycles) won in her first competitive road race with a time of 1: 54: 45. Phillips recorded 1: 55: 20, and third-placed Borthwick 1: 55: 25. In the Men’s event, six riders soon emerged to negotiate the fast-twisting descent into Balfron and onto a sprint finish. Although Dominic Hines (Velo

Maher, in only his second season, had a time of 1: 48: 04, and repeated the same club’s victory from a year ago. Well done to junior rider, 17-year-old Gavin Shuttleworth, of Velocity 44 Stirling. He was in the Scottish Youth Cycling Team last season, but requested a place in the scratch group and finished sixth. Malcolm Patterson (GNCC) came in a respectable 15th place from his scratch group. Officials would like to thank race

sponsor Solid Rock Cycles for their continued support, Mark and Robin, who both supplied the mechanical service, and race organiser Alan McIlwraith. Another top-class field of entries is expected for the Sam Robinson Memorial Road Race in late May. Looking further ahead, the new Glasgow Velodrome will increase the growing popularity of cycling. Glasgow Nightingale Cycling Club have their midweek base at Torrance Community Centre, and the Sunday meeting point is Kirkhouse Inn, Blanefield. Why not check out their website and go along - a warm welcome awaits everyone.

SCOTS RETAIN TROPHY IN ULSTER CLASHA second half equaliser from Lewis O’Connor helped the Scottish Youth Football Association Under-19 Combined Regional Squad draw with hosts Mid-Ulster Juveniles - and retain silverware for another year. The 30th anniversary clash - going away back to their first-ever meeting at Glenrothes - will not go down in the record books as a classic. Mid-Ulster will certainly feel they should have won the game after dominating the opening exchanges and around 20 minutes of the second half. The Scots, by comparison, could not retain possession long enough to create many clear-cut openings until the final 15 minutes. Irish striker Carlos Correia created most of the early danger at Dungannon. His net-bound header was cleared off the line, and minutes later

Kris Wilson blasted over. Fully 20 minutes elapsed before the visitors carved out a chance. From Kevin Hamilton’s quickly-taken free kick, Mark Little had a shot blocked, and Lewis O’Connor saw his left-foot effort tipped over. Mid-Ulster deservedly took the lead following a corner kick, and Tower Hearts goalkeeper Justin Smith was left to pick the ball out of the net after what appeared to be an own goal converted by one of his defenders. Smith was the Scots hero minutes later when he managed to block a shot from danger man Correia. Minutes

later, Wilson failed to convert another golden chance from two yards. The Combined Squad introduced substitute ‘keeper Kyle Marley at the start of the second half and he was immediately called into action with an excellent save. Ryan McColl and Stephen Malarkey responded for the visitors with fine efforts. In 75 minutes, Glasgow East End star Mark Little set-up a timely equaliser for team-mate Lewis O’Connor. The initial shot at goal was palmed out but O’Connor followed up to make it 1-1. Ironically, the same player might have snatched a late winner had he

be able to direct a free header from John Robertson’s corner kick on target. Man of the Match awards was presented to Craig Patterson (Mid-Ulster) and Scots captain Mark Logan, of Arsenal Boys’ Club. SYFA officials would like to thank sponsors Dunn Food and Drink Ltd, plus kit backers The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), for their continued support. With Mid-Ulster due to visit Scotland next year, their hosts are already planning ahead. A squad could be in place around December - allowing them an extra two months’ preparation time.
