Some pieces may be a whimsical creation from the artist’s own imagination, while others are reproductions of a given lesson. Whatever the case, these students put on a show for all to see. High School Art Projects On Display at Museum

The art students at Smith Center High School have the chance in the month of February to have their artwork displayed at the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum in Logan. This is the Museum’s 39th annual High School art exhibit. Every year, the art students from area schools look forward to showing off their unique artistic talents in the Hansen Museum gallery. Area schools participating in this year’s exhibit include Hill City, Plainville, Norton, Phillipsburg, TMP, Wakeeney, Smith Center, Ellis, Oakley, and Stockton.

Students strive to create a piece of art that represents him or her as an artist, whether by personality, creativity, excellence of quality, or even their mood. Some pieces may be a whimsical creation from the artist’s own imagination, while others are reproductions of a given lesson. Whatever the case, these students put on a show for all to see.

High School Vocalists Perform Broadway Night

At Smith Center The High School Choir and Chansonnaires

performed Broadway Night on Sunday, February

12th

at the High School auditorium. The Choir

performed renditions from Grease, You’re a Good

Man Charlie Brown, and Hotel Transylvania to

name a few, while the Chansonnaires sang songs

from The Lion King, Les Miserables, Wizard of Oz,

and Frozen. The students entertained the crowd

with upbeat choreography and several different

costume changes to accompany their performances.

Junior High Wrestling

Junior High Scholar’s Bowl

The Junior High wrestling team hosted four

other schools on their home mats on Thursday,

February 9th

. Teams coming to town included

TMP, Oberlin, Osborne and Trego. The Redmen

wrestlers had 19 wins and 19 losses on the evening.

The following day, the Junior High wrestlers

traveled with the High School wrestlers to Plainville

for another dual. On Saturday, the 11th

, the Junior

High wrestlers turned around and traveled to the Jr.

Panther Classic tournament at Phillipsburg.

Overall, the Redmen team took 8th

, the Junior High

wrestlers traveled to TMP to compete in their dual.

The Redmen wrestlers won 16 and lost 14 at this

dual.

The Junior High wrestlers will wrap up their

season with the MCEL meet at Ellis on Thursday,

March 2nd

.

The 7th

and 8th

grade Scholar’s Bowl team

traveled to Stockton on Monday, February 13th

.

There were a total of 12 teams competing in this

meet. The 8th

grade team competed really well and

placed 2nd

at this meet.

The next tournament was at Hill City on

Tuesday, February 28th

. The Junior High Scholar’s

Bowl team will wrap up their season in March with

one final meet March 7th

at Phillipsburg followed

by the MCEL tournament hosted at Smith Center

FCCLA Students Headed to State Competition

The FCCLA students went to Stockton on

Wednesday, February 15th

to compete in the District

B Star (Students Taking Action with Recognition)

Event competition. A total of 10 groups gave their

demonstrations, and 8 of those 10 groups won the

privilege to advance to the state competition in

April.

Allie Ifland, Maggie Nixon, and Gracen Hutchinson

received a silver in Chapter Service Display. Reece

Buckmaster also received a silver in Career

Investigation.

The following groups will be advancing to the state

competition in April.

Adalynne Haresnape, Sydney Devlin, and Sienna

Wingerson received a silver in Chapter Service

Portfolio. Bree Frieling and Sharon Topel received

a silver in Chapter Service Display.

Lizzy Pfortmiller and Kendra Maydew received

a gold in Jr. Chapter in Review Display. Mikayla

Dietz, Josiah Moore and Katelyn Shellito received a

silver in Chapter in Review Display.

Breanna Knapp and Paris Bailey received a gold in

Interpersonal Communications, and Camden Dietz

received a gold in Illustrated Talk

Rebecca McDowell and Megan Oliver received a

gold in National Programs in Action, Student Body

and Tayln McKenzie received a gold in Chapter

Service Display.

Teacher’s Hold In-Service

Junior High MCEL Music Contest

On Monday, February 20th

USD #237 held

an in-service day for all the teachers. In the

morning the teachers gathered in the lunch room

commons area to hear Chris Dinkel from High

Plains Mental Health Services speak about mental

health issues. In the afternoon, Greg Hobelmann

spent time giving all the teachers a tour of the new

website and showing them how they can add

information to their own class pages.

The Junior High music students traveled

with Ms. DeBey and Mr. Hobelmann to Norton on

Wednesday, February 22nd

to compete in the 2017

MCEL music contest. Several students performed

individual pieces in additional to the choir

High School Wrestling

The wrestling team traveled to Wakeeney to

participate in the 3-2-1A Regional Tournament on

Friday, February 17th

and Saturday, February 18th.

The tournament resulted with the team taking 2nd

place and seven wrestlers qualifying for the state

tournament in Hays the following weekend.

The KSHSAA 3-2-1A State Wrestling

championships were held in Hays on Friday and

Saturday, February 24th

and 25th

. A total of 224

wrestlers competed to medal as one of the top six

wrestlers in the state. The wrestlers performed well

with 5 of the 7 wresters placing in the top 6 in the

state in the 3-2-1A division.

Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season

The Smith Center Redmen and Lady Red hosted Wakeeney on Friday, February 17th for their final regular season home game of the year. The Lady Red won over the Trego Lady Eagles with a score of 62-51. The Redmen also came away with a win over Trego 61-37. The following Senior athletes were also honored between the girls’ and boys’ games.

For the final regular season game of the year, the teams traveled to Beloit on Tuesday, February 21st. The girls met up with a tough Beloit team coming away with a loss 25-48. The boys had a hard fought game vs. the Trojans, but came away with another loss at 59-79.

The Sub-State tournament started on Monday, February 27 with both the Redmen and Lady Redmen matching up with Plainville. The Lady Red ended the regular season with a 6-15 record and entered the Sub-State tournament seated in 5th place. The Redmen ended the season with a regular season record of 7-14 and are seated in 7th place going into the tournament.

The Lady Red had a win over the Plainville Cardinals on the first night of the Sub-State play with a score of 43-26. They will advance on to play Hill City on March 3rd. The Redmen basketball team ended their season during the first round of the Sub-State tournament with a loss to Plainville 34-68.

SC Celebrates National FFA Week

National FFA Week for 2017 was February

18th

through the 27th

. This week gives

FFA members, alumni and sponsors the opportunity

to advocate for agricultural education and FFA. It is

also a time to share with local, state and national

audiences what FFA is and the impact it has on

members every day. FFA week was celebrated by

the members hosting a staff breakfast on Tuesday,

February 12th

, dressing in their western wear on

Wednesday, and all members wearing their FFA t-

shirts to school on Thursday.
