The Red Tower
St Agatha’s Tower is spectacularly situated at the crest of Marfa ridge overlooking Għadira Bay, the nature reserve and bird sanctuary, as
well as the straits between Comino and Gozo. It is popularly known as the Red Tower because of its distinctive red colour.
Built in 1649 during the reign of French Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar, the Red Tower was paid for through taxes imposed
on the Maltese. At the time it was the only means of defence in the North of the Islands and was still used for defensive purposes during
the British period.
