Late last week two-term councillor Pat McEvedy became the first to officially announce his intention to contest the Selwyn mayoralty at next year’s local body elections.

Current mayor Kelvin Coe has already signalled he will not to stand for re-election at next October’s election. Mayor Coe has held the position for three terms.

Cr McEvedy is in his second term as a councillor representing the Ellesmere ward and is a cousin of former mayor Michael McEvedy.

Pat McEvedy said he has decided to declare early so as to get any ambiguity out of the way.

It’s the first time Mt Hutt, one of three ski areas owned by New Zealand ski operator NZSki, has won the prestigious award.

The World Ski Awards is the only global initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski hospitality. Over one million votes were received worldwide from ski tourism professionals and consumers around the world.

Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said he was ‘stoked’ about winning the award.

“We are absolutely buzzing. Our staff put everything into delivering the very best guest experience at Mt Hutt this season and this international endorsement is fantastic recognition.”

The awards evening in Kitzbühel was the highlight of a three-day programme attended by an audience of ski tourism

figureheads and market leaders from all around the world.

Mt Hutt general manager of operations James Urquhart and ski instructor Ingrid Zauner received the award on behalf of the ski area at the glitzy gala ceremony dinner.

Mr Urquhart said it was a real honour to be sharing stage with world renowned ski resorts from across Canada, the US and Europe.

“This is the ski industry equivalent of the Academy Awards and while Brad and Ange stayed at home to look after the kids, players from the likes of Whistler and Aspen added some real star quality to the proceedings,” he said.

“We’ve had the opportunity to network and share ideas with representatives from ski areas from all corners of the globe.”

Professor Simmons said the core members of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST) are experts in disciplines such as economics, geography, psychology, sociology and anthropology.

“However, my nomination for the fellowship was based around my background in human geography and Lincoln University’s applied approach to tourism.”

Professor Simmons said he has received great support from Lincoln University over the course of his career, especially the founding years spent with his mentor, Professor Pat Devlin.

“The Government’s previous investments in tourism research for the public good has also been fundamental, as it has allowed my Lincoln-based teams to undertake world leading research,” he said.

International award for Lincoln academicLincoln University’s Professor of Tourism David Simmons has received international acclaim by being elected as a Fellow of the top global organisation for tourism academia.

David Simmons

Professor Simmons was nominated for the fellowship by Professor Larry Dwyer, of the UNSW Australia Business School, and Tourism and Hospitality Management Professor Christopher Ryan, of the University of Waikato.

Mayoral hopefuls lining upSprings ward councillor Malcolm

Lyall, another sitting councillor who has previously contested the mayoralty, is ruling out another tilt at the position.

“At this stage I will not contest the mayoralty but will definitely stand again in the Springs ward as a councillor as there is a lot going on the area at the moment and I want to see that through.

“However, a week is a long time in politics so you never know and it would be good to see an urban candidate contesting the mayoralty.”

Cr Debra Hassan, who stood against Mayor Coe the first time he ran for the position said she is unlikely to contest the mayoralty but will make a decision closer to the time when nominations close.

Former deputy mayor and current Malvern ward councillor John Morten, who also contested the mayoralty when Mayor Coe first took up the mayoral chains, said he will not be a mayoral candidate next year but intends to stand again as a councillor

in the ward. However, he said he will not make a

final decision until closer to the time when nominations close in June.

First term councillor Grant Miller from the Springs ward said he has been approached by a number of ratepayers who have asked him to consider standing for the mayoralty.

“It is my intention to consider these requests and my own commitments with a view to making a decision in the New Year.”

Former Mayor and perennial mayoral candidate Bill Woods of Springfield said there was a “high probability” he will stand again.

“Both Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Mayor Coe have said that ‘it wouldn’t be an election without Bill Woods’, so who am I to disagree.”

Sitting councillors Mark Alexander, Peter Hill and Jeff Bland have all indicated they will not contest the mayoralty but will stand for council while Ellesmere ward councillor Nigel Barnett is not standing for re-election.

Mrs Chesmar referred to board members Bruce Russell and Alan French in the Selwyn Times as “two old chaps who thinks it’s a bit of mana” to be on the community board.

Her comments followed calls by Mr Russell and Mr French for her to resign after she backed a Selwyn District Council representation review decision to scrap the board.

Mrs Chesmar made the apology at the start of last week’s Selwyn Central Community Board (SCCB) meeting. Neither Mr Russell nor Mr French would comment on the apology.

At the meeting Mr French tabled an item of extraordinary general business on the “future of the SCCB” which Mrs Chesmar, under advice from council chief executive David Ward, said would be heard behind closed doors with the

what the subject of the publicly-excluded agenda item was Mrs Chesmar said “me”.

As to holding the discussions without public scrutiny Mr Ward said the reason was, as per the relevant legislation, to “maintain the effective conduct of public affairs through the free and frank expression of opinions by or between or to members or officers or employees of any local authority, or any persons in the course of their duty and to the protection of such members, officers, employees and persons from improper pressure or harassment”.

Meanwhile, Mr Russell and Mr French are pressing forward with an appeal to Local Government Commission to overturn council’s decision to do away with the board.

Mr Russell said they would have their appeal submission to the commission before the end of the year.

“If anyone wishes to support that appeal they can either contact me or Alan,” Mr Russell said.

Back in 2009 a Conversation Café hosted by the Rolleston Youth Action Group showed 25% of attendees thought a designated youth space should be a top priority for Rolleston. Plans are now underway to deliver this in 2016.

Generation House is a shared project between the Selwyn Youth Council, Salvation Army and Selwyn District Council.

When I heard about the Generation House project I was overwhelmed with support for the idea. A space in

Rolleston that will be a shared café, hang out area, offices to provide different types of support, and an art and music studio.

As if that wasn’t awesome enough one of the driving forces behind the project is nine key values; community connection, generational transfer, generosity, expression, social justice, learning, acts of service and environmental awareness.

The space is being created to provide a platform for the community to embrace these values. The space

Youth space proposal gathers momentumOne thing we as teenagers struggle with is talking about how we feel - what we think, what we want, and what we expect from the world we live in. will not only be an area for the youth of Selwyn but anyone in the community who shares these nine key values.

As a firm believer of community connection and expression, I am so excited by the idea of Generation House. It will provide a space where we can be ourselves, learn, grow, and express thoughts and opinions that we may be scared to talk about elsewhere.

I can’t wait to see how people will utilise it and the amazing things that will come out of it. I know I’ll be keen

to check out the facility and get away from the business of life

Everyone involved with the project are doing something that will make a huge difference in our Selwyn community, intertwining the nine values into the heart of the fastest growing township in Selwyn.

Generation House will become the hub of expression, learning, and positive change. This is a new side of Selwyn we are starting to discover, and I can’t wait to uncover more.

Chasing Southbrook’s 148 Ferris scored 123 not out off 60 balls with the three figures coming off just 50 balls.

It was Ferris’ second amazing innings in a month after he smashed a 34-ball century in round four.

South Malvern knocked off the score in 17.3 overs to improve their record to three wins and four losses.

Darryn Boyle was the top scorer for Southbrook, falling one short of a half century on 49. Dave Beatty and Mike McCaughan each took three wickets for South Malvern.

Competition front-runners, Sefton, scored an easy 10-wicket win over Oxford after all their bowlers chipped in to bowl Oxford out for 111.

South Malvern’s James Ferris notched his second spectacular century of the season in premier country cricket to help his side to an upset win over the previously unbeaten Southbrook.

Youngman and Andrew Laffey bagged two each.

The run chase was a formality and Sefton’s openers cruised to victory inside 16 overs. Matt Laffey finished on 61 not out and Tim Harrison on 40 not out.

It was a happy return to Southbridge Domain for Leeston-Southbridge as they defeated Greendale by seven wickets.

The senior side played their first game at Southbridge in close to a decade and rolled Greendale for 139. Opener Nick Jenkins compiled a quick 46 for Greendale before the side collapsed.

Angus Hooper was the pick of the Leeston-Southbridge bowlers taking three for 22 while Tim Field, Ben Roborgh and Sam Chamberlain each snared a brace.

Leeston-Southbridge opener Chris Beatson then anchored the run chase with a 79-ball unbeaten 60 which included 13 boundaries.

Leeston-Southbridge reached the target in the 28th over to record their third win of the season.

Batting first Weedons could only manage 104 all out with Reuben Craw the pick of the Lincoln bowlers taking three for 16.

Weedons’ Josh Watson made life difficult for the Lincoln batsmen taking five for 20 but Lincoln managed to get over the line with two wickets remaining.

The board is warning that people and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the area of the Selwyn River at Coes Ford until the health warning has been lifted.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the algae looks like dark brown or black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.

“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips,” Dr Humphrey said.

“If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown or black algal mats or water in this area.”

Public health warning for Coes FordThe Canterbury District Health Board has issued a health warning for Coes Ford following the discovery of high levels of the potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) in the Selwyn River.

He said reticulated town water supplies are currently safe but no one should drink the water from the river at any time.

“Even after boiling the water from the river, it does not remove the toxin and therefore should not be consumed,” Dr Humphrey said.

“Pets should be taken to a vet immediately if they are showing signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats.”

Dr Humphrey said people and animals should remain out of the waterways until the warnings have been lifted.

Environment Canterbur y is monitoring the sites and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality.

However, there are still maintenance tasks that should be carried out regularly to ensure the deck is safe.

If you think a deck is a safety hazard you should prevent anyone from using it until it has been assessed and repaired. Some common problemsWater ponding against house

This can happen if there’s not enough of a drainage gap between the deck and the house. There should be at least a 6mm gap between the decking boards and a bigger gap, up to 12mm, between the house and the deck structure.

If the boards are too close to the house, lift them and reposition or cut them back. If the deck or deck framing is hard against the cladding this will be a much bigger job. Seek professional advice, particularly if the cladding is likely to be damaged by the work.

Check that flashings take water away from the house and allow it to drain away.Grime, leaves and moss

Grime, leaves and moss collecting in gaps around a timber deck can lead to moisture build-up or ponding which could rot the deck.

Clean and remove leaves, moss and other debris from the deck, paying particular attention to the gaps between the decking boards and outlets. Use a moss remover or solution of one part

Maintenance for your timber decksArticle supplied by Consumer New Zealand

Open timber decks constructed with durable treated timbers should be less of a concern than enclosed balconies.

bleach to four parts water.Rotten timber

This can be a safety hazard and may support toxic mould, which poses health risks.

Check under the deck and any areas where timber meets other timber (eg joists, bearers, decking) as these areas can trap moisture. Carefully check any dark patches as these indicate high levels of moisture.

Sometimes timber appears fine from the outside even when it has started to rot, so use a screwdriver to see if it is soft underneath or in the joint. Replace rotting timbers immediately.Blackish stains

Blackish stains around bolt holes can indicate the bolts are rusting, in which case they’ll need to be replaced. Also check for undersized washers. Bolted connections often require a 50mm x 50mm square washer or a 55mm diameter round washer to be effective.

For decks that are high off the ground, bolts and undersized washers should be replaced by a professional. For a low deck, you may be able to replace the bolts and washers yourself. Use stainless steel bolts if you are near the sea or in a geothermal area.Loose balustrades or posts

These are a safety hazard because they may fail when they are needed to

prevent someone falling.Ensure they are securely connected

to the deck structure and that the barrier doesn’t wobble. If in doubt, ask for professional advice.Corroding steel connectors

Corroding galvanised steel connectors are a safety risk and should be replaced, preferably with stainless steel products.

For decks that are high off the ground, the work should be done by a professional.

For a low deck, you may be able to replace the connectors yourself.Mould

Mould can make the deck slimy and slippery, which is a safety hazard.

Sweep the deck with a stiff-bristled yard brush. Apply hot water and a weak

bleach solution or household products that remove slime and mould. Bleach can damage plants so you may need to protect surrounding vegetation with plastic sheeting while you clean the deck.

Don’t use a water blaster to clean wall cladding materials as these can cause damage. However, lower pressure water blasters may be fine for open timber decks.

Rot, corrosion or movement in the structureThese could all be safety hazards. Address the rot or corrosion as above. Check bolts and other fastenings for movement.Loose nuts and bolts

These can be safety hazards. Tighten bolted connections. These will be between diagonal braces and timber poles or posts, where timber posts and beams are bolted together, or where timber beams are bolted to a concrete anchor point.

Depending on the age of your house, it's when you start removing wallboards and other sections of the house that you discover the true state of things, for example:Wiring

People commonly discover they need to rewire because the electrical wiring and fittings have become unsafe.

This is particularly true for wiring in black or white rubber-like sheathing (pre-1960 houses), timber conduit (pre-1950 houses) or steel conduit (pre-1940 houses).Plumbing

Corrosion of water pipes, particularly old galvanised pipes, can sometimes be so bad that the whole house needs new plumbing, hot water reticulation is likely to be low pressure, or disconnected waste pipes may be emptying into the subfloor.Carpentry

A rotten weatherboard can reveal rotten framing when the board is removed, floors out of level, and serious borer. Corrosion under flashings and under the bottom edge of the laps of galvanised steel roofing.Glazing

In older homes it is often thin, can break easily and is a safety hazard. Asbestos, which could present a

safety risk, may be discovered in some materials such as roofing, sprayed ceilings, cement sheeting, and some floor coverings.

If you are replacing glass, it must be replaced with glass that complies with the Building Code. Acceptable Solution F2/AS1 requires glazing that people may fall against to comply with NZS 4223 Code of Practice for Glazing in Buildings.

A skilled tradesperson should be knowledgeable about Building Code requirements. But when you are renovating make sure that in areas where slips are more likely – such as in bathrooms and kitchen, or where windows are close to the floor or at the end of stairwells - that the right grade of glass is used. Other possible issues:• Unstable brick chimneys• Lack of sub-floor ventilation• No insulation in the walls or ceiling• Floor and framing too close to

the ground• Foundation settlement• Insufficient lateral support (bracing)

in the sub-floor structureIt can be difficult to budget a set figure

because so much of the work is unseen before you start. Your alterations may have to go on hold to deal with more urgent repair work.

ground up. from the Profit startsSubdividing, surveying and engineering are the basics that have a huge impact on the profitability of your project.

Dr Clive Dalton from www.lifestyleblock.co.nz looks at the pros and cons of keeping animals on a lifestyle block and what type of animals may suit.

Pros

Farm animals can be classed as ‘companion animals’ just like dogs and cats but can provide meat, milk, and fibre.

They can also provide manure for fertiliser, and control pasture through grazing, especially in areas which cannot be mechanically mown, and can provide extra income if well managed.

Keeping farm animals is a wonderful educational experience for children, and in the process they learn a great deal about their fellow humans.

Keeping livestock on small farmsLifestyle Block owners often make the move to the country so as to be able to keep more animals, not just for pets, but to reap the benefits these animals may provide such as meat and wool, which can be turned into additional income.

ConsYou are legally responsible for all

animals in your care under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

Keeping livestock will restrict your personal and family activities. For example you will need to make arrangements for their care when you go away.

You will need to work outside in all weathers, regardless of the time of day or night.

Livestock and their trading have a varying requirement for capital, and profits from this investment are by no means guaranteed.

You will have to deal with birth, death, disposal and slaughter of animals. The 'sight of blood' is a common feature on a farm.

You will have to invest in machinery which has associated dangers, as well as using chemicals and veterinary drugs.

Accidents causing death and injuries on farms are very common.

You will need good stock handling facilities (eg yards and pens) to ensure the safety of stock and people.

Animals on a farm will attract vermin such as rats and mice which will have to be poisoned.

Poison baits are a hazard for pets.

Some common optionsCalves

Calves are a very popular starting option for a small farm or lifestyle block.

Calves are easy to obtain, and they bond well with humans due to regular contact at feeding times.

You will need a shed and good pasture for when they start grazing at 4-6 weeks old.

It costs around $300 to rear a calf without the cost of labour so profits are not guaranteed.

You can quit them at any time or keep them on to sell as big cattle.

Cattle grow into large heavy animals and you will need handling facilities - yards, head bail and loading race.

You may be able to share with a neighbour.

They are a good option if you just want paddocks grazed and you can buy and sell to suit your grass growth. Only run heifers or steers for meat and never bulls.

They are relatively easy care - only need pasture and water but large cattle can pug and damage pastures in winter so breed choice is important.

You can keep breeding cows to produce beef calves but it means you have to keep or lease a bull.

SheepMost people dislike sheep as they

consider them a lot of work, and they get all sorts of diseases.

You need good handling facilities for holding and drafting sheep but they do bond well with humans, especially if hand reared.

Breeds vary in their behaviour. For example on a small block with small children, you don't want very active sheep such as Cheviots or Perendales unless you know how to handle them in good facilities.

Sheep also have to be crutched, dagged and shorn and wool returns will hardly pay for the shearing.

They are the best option to keep grass well mown, especially in areas where you cannot get a machine.

Calves are ideal lifestyle block animals but will need a lot of attention when they get bigger.

Installation costs apply. Pricing includes GST.

GoatsGoats bond very well with humans,

especially if hand reared. They are browsers and not grazing

animals, so they love trees and shrubs and regularly risk poisoning.

They don't like clover so pastures will become very clover dominant, and other stock will be needed to graze the pastures.

They are prone to footrot but this can be culled out over time.

Mohair is a good option, but the only other good option is meat.

HorsesHorses are large heavy animals and

are high on the ACC list of causing accidents to people.

These are special interest animals mainly for riding, or breeding for specific markets such as eventing, show jumping, trekking.

You will need special yards and housing and horses are the worst of all grazing animals as they overgraze some areas of their paddocks and use others as a toilet.

You have to control their intake of high-protein pasture to prevent founder of the foot. This means tight grazing control where large amounts of dung will accumulate. This dung needs to be disposed of by regular collection or harrowing.

PigsPigs are intelligent animals and bond

well with humans. To perform well, pigs need to be fed

grain-based feed as kitchen scraps are not enough, so you will find that feed costs are higher than expected.

Pigs thrive well outside but they will pug paddocks, even if they have nose rings. Pigs like to graze, but a nice pasture can soon turn to mud in wet weather and pigs like to wallow in mud holes in the paddock, and will make these if they are not provided.

Pigs are very clean animals if they are allowed to be, but can be very smelly if not and you will have complaints from neighbours.

There's always a good market for weaner pigs. Weaner pigs are very hard to contain as they easily sneak through fences- and find their way into the garden.

PoultryKeeping a few hens is an attractive

option and they quickly become people friendly by regular feeding.

Few if any small farmers keep laying birds in cages, so they roam 'free range'. This can include the garden where they make dust baths (even if these are provided), and they eventually find their way up to the back door and even inside the house.

They often end up having to be restrained in some kind of run, which ends up being an 'intensive' system.

If you work out the cost of eggs produced, it's always cheaper to buy them, so you have to put a different value on your own chooks' eggs to counteract basic economics.

Poultry (hens, turkeys, ducks, geese) kept for meat take a long time to fatten when run outdoors as their feed conversion efficiency is low.

They are best confined if that meets your aims in keeping them but remember ducks need water and their egg laying is very seasonal.

Camelids (Alpacas, Llamas)These are specialist animals and are

kept mainly as companions, although there is a specialist market for alpaca fibre but it is not large.

Up to now they have been very expensive due to short supply and money is made by breeders encouraging others to become breeders so they can sell stock for big money.

Whether you are staying at home or travelling, there are many things to take into account to create a safe and happy festive period for your pets. Many cats and dogs will have already been booked into a boarding facility.

If you are looking for a facility for the first time, it is prudent to visit the premises and see where your pet(s) will be staying. Visit any time during opening hours, ask about what foods they feed, exercise for the animals and vaccination requirements.

Make sure the kennels and catteries are clean, comfortable, not too noisy and well-staffed. If your pet has special needs such as medications and foods, ask whether the staff can accommodate these needs.

Dogs will need to be up to date with

With the school holidays, Christmas and New Year season coming up many of us will be making plans for our holidays.

their vaccinations including kennel cough vaccine, each boarding kennel will have a different requirement so check and make sure you enquire ahead before the stay.

The same applies for cats, but they will need their flu vaccinations up to date. It is a good idea to give your pet worm and flea treatment prior to their stay also. Most catteries that board rabbits don’t have specific vaccination requirements for rabbits but best to check with the staff anyway.

Always provide emergency contact numbers including your vet’s and take your pet’s food, collar, leash, medication, favourite toy, and bed.

If you have several pets that need boarding, it may be more economical to hire a house or pet-sitter, and there

are several of these services around Christchurch and Selwyn.

Ask to meet the people who will be visiting your home, make sure you like them and that they are happy to follow all your instructions because all animals are different. Get references, ask around for feedback.

If you are travelling within New Zealand with your pet these holidays, let your vets know ahead of time; your cat or dog may need their vaccinations up to date and depending on your destination, additional parasite control and vaccines may be required. In addition, there may be other health issues to address.

Make sure your pet is accustomed to travelling, even short trips if not done often may be very stressful for animals.

If you are staying with friends, ensure they have a fenced garden or yard and that their own animals are vaccinated. Some hotels, rental properties or even camp grounds permit pets, look them up online and ask about the fees also. If you are flying, plan ahead, you may need to order a special crate or the airline may ask for other records.

Whether you are driving or flying ensure you bring enough of your pet’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip. If you worry about your pet becoming very stressed during

the trip, speak to your vet. There are options to help your pet during the journey.

For the folks staying home there are ways to safeguard your pets from hazards we commonly have around during the festive seasons.

Christmas decorations may pose a hazard to pets, decorations may be eaten or glass baubles broken. Pets may eat Christmas tree needles or drink water from the base of the tree which may contain preservatives.

Keep decorative lights out of reach and stop your cats from playing with tinsel or long pieces of string or wire. Beware of popular festive plants such as poinsettias, lilies, holly berries and baby’s breath.

Popular foods during the festive season may also be dangerous to your pets, keep chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, sweets and alcohol out of reach. In addition, please refrain yourself from giving human food, these include and not limited to onion, garlic (often in stuffing), left overs and cooked bones (chicken, turkeys, roasts, ham). The above mentioned foods are well known to be dangerous to animals, people seem more likely to offer it to pets when there are guests around or after a few alcoholic beverages.
