Following family track to successu by Belinda Cullen-Reid

With her sights set on being the first woman harness driver to win the New Zealand Cup 19-year-old Kimberly Butt of West Melton aims to prove that women can be just as good at racing as men.

Well on her way to driving success, Kimberly already has six wins to her credit after five months as a junior driver.

She was recently awarded Intermediate Cadet of the Year and the Wayne Francis Memorial Trophy for Leadership as part of her studies for the National Certificate in Equine.

Kimberly attributes success to her father, well known harness driver Anthony Butt, who is her greatest role model. She gets motivation from her desire to see women succeed in a once male dominated sport.

“Dad used to say that women can’t drive. It was a male sport. So that was an incentive for me to do it. I’ve always looked up to Dad. I wanted to be like him, and also say that girls can do it too,” Kimberly says.

To be successful Kimberly has had to prove that she can hold her own against the boys.

“Being a girl, the boys think they can push you around. You’ve got to push back and then they know. You’ve got to be able to hold your position. Not get intimidated. They need to realise it’s not going to be easy to get that position off you.”

Kimberly never considered a career choice away from horses, which is

not surprising considering the good racing stock she comes from. With horse breeding achievements from grandparents on both sides, parents in the industry, successful West Melton

Pascoe again in running for top gongu by Kent Caddick

Selwyn swimming sensation Sophie Pascoe is again in the running for the country’s most prestigious sporting honour.

Pascoe, who won five gold medals at the IPC World Championships has been nominated in the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year Award category for the 2013 Halberg Award.

Pascoe was the winner of the category in 2012 and has been named as a finalist again alongside fellow swimmer Mary Fisher, who also won five golds at the world champs.

The pair is joined by blind bowling world champion David Monk and para shooting world record holder Mike Johnson as finalists in the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Disabled Sportsperson of the Year Award category.

The Halberg Awards provide an essential fundraising event for the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, the charity set up by Olympic champion Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ), which aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation.

Halberg Disability Sport Foundation CEO, Geoff Burgess said it was good to see a diverse range of sports represented in the awards finalists.

“It shows just how successful our athletes have been across various sports codes in 2013 and hopefully

Selwyn drivers still using phonesu by Kent Caddick

A survey of Selwyn residents has shown many drivers are still using mobile phones.

Almost all (97%) of the 359 residents who completed the recent Selwyn District Road Safety ‘drive phone free’ survey reported they had seen people using mobile phones when stopped in traffic.

“Under changes to legislation in 2009 using a phone while you are driving or when you are at traffic lights is illegal,” Selwyn road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning said.

“Using a phone when you have stopped at the lights is a bad idea as many drivers are tempted to continue to finish their conversation or texting as they drive off.

“At that time you have a lot of demands on your attention like checking for traffic before you go and putting your car into gear and you shouldn’t also be trying to complete a conversation or send a text.”

The survey was carried out as part of a wider Selwyn District Council campaign to encourage motorists to drive phone free by not using mobile or hands free phones so they were focussed on driving when in a car.

Ms Tinning said many people who took part in the survey reported they took specific actions to ensure they

were not distracted by a phone while driving, such as letting a passenger take a call, turning the phone off or letting it go to voicemail.

inspires the future world, Olympic and Paralympic champions to aim high.”

Overall 25 sports men, women and teams have been named as finalists across six categories in the 2013 Halberg Awards with the winners to be announced at a gala dinner at the Vector Arena in Auckland on Thursday, February 13.

Comedic farce first for yearGreendale’s Sarah Wilson-Coutts and Maurice Barnes, both members of Kirwee Players, will be taking part in Riccarton Players’ first production for 2014, the comedic farce Don’t Get Your Vicars in a Twist.

The play was the winner of the Derek Lomas Playwriting Competition in 2005 for playwrights Ann Gawthorpe and Lesley Brown.

In Don’t Get Your Vicars in a Twist churchwarden George Williams has let the empty vicarage to a travelling theatre company for a Murder Mystery weekend to pay for his daughter’s extravagant wedding.

Meanwhile, Bishop Herbert determined to have the first parish with a female vicar, appoints the Reverend Caroline Timberlake before the event can take place. But when Caroline decides to keep a long-standing reunion with her college friends that very weekend, George grasps the opportunity to cash in.

Mistaken identity, plus every other form of misunderstanding, including cross-dressing, drunkenness and general chaos ensue and will make this a comedy to remember director Garry Thomas says.

“In true farce style, everything builds to a confused and frantic climax, and no less than seven doors through which the characters enter and exit.

“It’s been very challenging for the cast to keep the pace up — and remember which door is which — but the end result is a very funny play.”

p Churchwarden Alan Palmer, played by Geoff Kendall, is surprised by the attention shown by vicarage guest Madeleine Forbes (Karyn Gibson)

Stick to your limitThe Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding recreational fishers in Selwyn to stick to fish limits and size restrictions to avoid potential fines.

MPI compliance director Dean Baigent says it is important recreational fishers fish responsibly and play their part to conserve the resource.

“We want to remind all recreational fishers that the rules can, and do, change and that they need to check the rules before they go out.

“Fishers can check the rules through the free New Zealand Fishing Rules app, the free text service, by picking up a brochure from their local MPI office or through the website www.fish.govt.nz.”

The New Zealand Fishing Rules app, which is available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, helps fishers to identify recreational fish species along with useful information such as the minimum legal size, maximum daily limits and area bag limits.

The app covers the different rules in the different areas and, once downloaded, can be checked anywhere, anytime. Short videos show how to release undersize fish correctly and also how to measure/determine the sex of crayfish. A video demo of the app is available on YouTube.

Fish limits and size restrictions can also be free texted on request. Fishers

can text the name of a fish species eg ‘blue cod’ to 9889 and receive a reply with the size restriction information instantly for free. If they need to know the bag limit, fishers can reply with ‘limit’ and receive that information instantly too.

For those who prefer print, the local MPI office can provide a brochure of the rules for their region.

Maurice Barnes is playing Ronald Harvey, an old ham actor who likes a tipple and who takes the role of the bishop in the Murder Mystery weekend while Sarah Wilson-Coutts plays Freda Andrews, a guest at the vicarage.

Don’t Get Your Vicars in a Twist runs from January 21 to 26 at the Open Stage Theatre at Hagley Community College in Christchurch. Bookings phone 03 338 4699 or visit www.riccartonplayers.co.nz.

Medical Centre patience pays offu by Belinda Cullen-Reid

After years in the planning and construction the new Darfield Medical Centre has finally opened its doors.

Medical centre lessee Dr Johan Vlok said the new building could not compare with the old one which had become dilapidated over the last few years while the new centre was in the final planning stages.

“It’s a fantastic medical centre. It has a lovely feel for patients and staff alike. This will be one of the best medical centres in the region, its design and layout,” Dr Vlok said.

Practice Manager Nancy Dimmock described the building as modern, purpose built and well insulated.

“It’s functional. It’s better organised and there’s somewhere for everything,” Ms Dimmock said.

The centre has four consulting rooms, two nurses’ treatment rooms, a large utility area and a central hub designed for nurses and reception staff. The building was constructed on the

Darfield Hospital grounds and is owned by Selwyn District Council. Ms Dimmock said the old medical centre was built in the 1940s by well-known Darfield builder Trevor Holland and used as a home.

In 1958 Dr Dennis Eason bought the building, lived and worked in it, adding two doctors’ consulting rooms. The building was later sold to the council and continued to be modified over the years.

“I always had an interest in harness racing. I’d go with Dad to races and work in the stables in the holidays and weekends.”

When she was around eight years old Kimberly got her first pony and began formal riding lessons when she was ten. She competed at the local pony club, A&P shows and show jumping events.

“You do get attached to horses. You have your favourites. It’s like people. There’s some you like and there’s some you don’t.”

It was when she was at school at Villa Maria College that she decided to follow in her father’s footstep and become a harness racer. She enrolled in the National Certificate of Equine, a compulsory course for those wanting to enter the harness racing industry. In six months Kimberly hopes to have completed her Level Four certificate.

Kimberly had always helped out around her father and uncle’s stables, Premier Stables in West Melton. In 2012 Kimberly began working for Mark Purdon in Rolleston as a stable hand. She got her trial licence and began driving at trials. The following year Kimberly went to work for

Avoiding the back to work bluesu by Sophia Graham

The sun is shining tantalisingly just outside the window, and you’ve barely had time to brush the sand off your feet. Hard as it is to believe, it’s time to sit back at your desk and tackle your overflowing email inbox.

busy during that time they don’t get a chance to properly relax, take a breath, and recharge their batteries.

“Too many of us dive straight back into work instead of gently easing ourselves back into the swing of things.

“We feel sad that our holiday is over, and don’t take the time to adjust to different sleeping and eating patterns that often change over the holidays. When we do this, we quickly start to feel exhausted, stressed, and depressed.”

Ms Clements says ‘back to work blues’ can come in many forms.

“Some people feel disorientated and have a go-slow attitude. Others lose motivation for their work, or feel resentful about having to return.

“On top of that, many people feel irritable, find themselves in a bad mood, or even suffer headaches or other physical manifestations of stress.

“One way of alleviating the pressure of back to work blues is to have something to look forward to — like booking in your next holiday, usually, that will be enough to help you to focus, think positively about the future, and reduce your current feelings of stress about work.”

The Mental Health Foundation has the following tips to reduce back to work blues:

p Mental Health Foundation chief executive Judi Clements recommends easing back into work after the Christmas break

• Take the first two days slowly — Reply to emails, catch up on phone calls and then head home for some R&R. Plunging straight back into the thick of things will only increase your stress levels.

• Create a harmonious work environment — Organise your workspace; have something personal that you like, or photos of friends and family on your desk. Set a favourite picture as your screen saver.

• Think about your personal growth — Do you have any skills that you would like to develop further? Why not enrol in a learning course this year? It doesn’t have to be work related.

• Review your job — Is it still fulfilling your needs and does it still challenge you? Ask your manager for a job review. Speak about your wants and needs for the role. Discuss any areas of work you are finding difficult.

• Take time out — Make sure you have at least 15 minutes a day to yourself. Go for a short walk or read a bit of a good book.

• Get organised — Get up earlier so you don’t have to rush. Set aside time for processing emails — break large projects into small steps.

Fire restrictions to be setFire restriction controls in Selwyn will now be set by ward allowing restrictions to be more closely linked to identified fire risks in different parts of the district.

The change has been introduced following a review of the Selwyn district’s current Fire Plan, which sets out the measures the Selwyn District Council uses to help manage and control rural fires.

Previously restricted or prohibited fire seasons have only been able to be introduced across the whole of the district.

“Selwyn is a large district and covers over 2,400 square miles, running from the Southern Alps to the coast and fire risk and rainfall levels can vary greatly from one area to another,” Selwyn Principal Rural Fire Officer Wilson Brown said.

“This change will mean that we can introduce a restricted or prohibited fire season in one part of the district while

not imposing unnecessary restrictions on burning in areas of the district where the fire risk is low.

“This will enable farmers to carry out stubble residue burning, a normal part of farming activity, in areas where it is safe to do so,” Mr Brown said.

Fire risk is assessed through a fire build-up index which looks at a range of factors including weather conditions and how dry vegetation is to determine the likelihood of fires starting and the difficulty of controlling fires once they have started.

The index is monitored on a daily basis.

Mt Brown said that if there is a high fire risk across the whole of Selwyn, then district wide restrictions can still be introduced.

Scottish doctor calls New Zealand homeu by Belinda Cullen-Reid

When Scottish doctor Helen McGregor agreed to accompany her newly-wed husband to New Zealand for a year she had no idea how much she would come to love the place.

The general practitioner has spent the last year working at the Darfield Medical Centre while her husband, Dr Matthew Leeman, completed a Fellowship at Christchurch Public Hospital.

“We’d only been married two months before we came out here. We feel more at home here than we did at home,” Dr McGregor said.

Dr McGregor had completed a Fellowship in rural medicine before coming to New Zealand and so was interested in being in a country practice.

“It’s been amazing. I’ve worked in a few practices and Darfield is the nicest place I’ve worked in. The patients are the best of a bunch. They’re a delight. It’s an honour to have looked after them.”

The couple will soon go back to Scotland for several months, but will then return to New Zealand for another year while Dr McGregor’s husband takes up a fixed term contract as a consultant surgeon in Dunedin.

Intelligrogardening without guesswork

We hope that you had a lovely Christmas break and managed to enjoy some sunshine and quality time with family and friends.

As we get back to the daily grind there are still things to do in the garden. With the temperatures yet to reach their peak, water conservation is getting to be vital. South Hort stocks a variety of barks suitable for mulching, with differing looks to suit a variety of gardens. We recommend a good 10cm layer of the bark to get the best results. How do you choose which bark to get? Most barks have the same properties, but a lot will depend on what you like the look of. We suggest you have a look at our website www.intelligro.co.nz to see what we have to offer, or alternatively come to our store at 1394 Main South Road and speak with our sales team.

Watering is going to be vital with the soils drying out faster at this time of year. Early morning or late evening are the best times to water as this reduces the amount of evaporation. Raised garden beds will need frequent watering due to their generally shallower water reservoir. If you find it is drying out too fast, talk with our helpful sales team about how you can combat that with a good quality product.

Looking for a natural plant food? Try out our 3kg Blood and Bone, Chicken Manure and Sheep Manure pellets! They are a great source of nutrients, easy to apply and release over time. The pails are refillable – great for the environment – and sell for only $12.90!

Invest in your roots by doing the ground work before planting. Blend in bags of sheep pellets, tomato mix and tomato food. This will ensure your plants get off to the best possible start.

When watering, it is better to water well every second or third day, rather than a little every day.

Use a seaweed liquid feed and drench your tomatoes once a fortnight. This gives the plants a boost, promotes healthy vigorous growth and increases harvesting capacity.

Make sure your garden is friendly to bees and insects. They do a wonderful job at pollinating tomatoes.

Be mindful particularly when growing tomatoes in a glasshouse where wind can’t really do the job.

Ensure your tomatoes have a good support network. Tomatoes need staking to support the heavy stems of fruit. The trick is to put the stake in the ground or soil before planting where possible.

Follow these tips and you should be in for a great crop of this delicious red fruit.

tomatoes and bake on a medium heat until tomato skins start to come away from the flesh, which is soft when touched.

Halve the French stick and cover with olive all. Bake in the oven until golden and crunchy.

Thinly slice halloumi cheese and fry in a pan on medium heat until lightly browned.

Arrange lettuce leaves on a plate and place warm tomatoes, crumbled pieces of halloumi and basil leaves on top. Season with freshly ground rock salt and black pepper.

Around HometheGetting the right advice on home energyu Article supplied by www.consumer.org.nz

As research has shown too many houses in New Zealand are cold and damp, but the answer is not to go blasting more heat in as that’s too costly, both financially and environmentally.

The answer is to reduce dampness, then insulate and draught proof as much as possible so that moderate heating will keep the house cosy and warm.

Information on achieving this is available from independent organisations, government agencies, and commercial operators. All have their part to play. Independent organisations

Consumer and BRANZ

Consumer is funded independently — we don’t have commercial or political ties. So the advice you get isn’t ‘loaded’. But that means we have to charge for providing information. We have to survive financially.

BRANZ receives a levy on building consents, which it uses to promote, fund and report on building-related science and research.

Consumer’s information is aimed at householders. BRANZ publications, which are orientated to the building industry, are more technical — but they can be a good source of specific information on topics such as insulation or windows. Community Energy Network

Consists of independent non-profit energy trusts and is establishing a national network of energy advice centres. The first energy-advice centres are underway in Wellington, Auckland

and Canterbury, with more planned. Their emphasis is on improving the energy performance of existing homes.

Advice is predominantly free. The advice centres are funded by grants from central and local government, and other sources. Advice centres can found via www.communityenergy.org.nz. Eco Design Advisors

Eco Design Advisors (EDA) services are another initiative made possible by central (through the Ministry for the Environment and EECA) as well as local government funding.

These have been set up in eight local-authority areas (Waitakere, Auckland, North Shore, Hamilton, Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty, Kapiti Coast, Wellington, and Queenstown) and are supported by BRANZ.

The Eco Design Advisors take a broader approach than the Community Energy Network — they cover the design of new houses as well as planned alterations or renovations. They also look at water use, material selection and recovery and at transport planning. Their advice is free.

These networks of advisors are expanding. We hope they will cover the whole country. There’s a lot of work to be done. If you’re in an area that’s not yet covered by one of them, contact the Community Energy Network. It may be able to help with contacts in your area.

What’s good about these programmes is they offer an independent personalised service that can cut though time-consuming searching — and the resulting information-overload.Useful websites: • www.eeca.govt.nz • www.energywise.govt.nz • www.dbh.govt.nz • www.smarterhomes.org.nz • www.ecan.govt.nz

THE RECORD January 15 - 2014 11

Notice is hereby given that the previously advertised Restricted Fire Season, which extended over the Plains area of the Selwyn District, is lifted as from 6am Monday 13 January 2014.

Fires may now be lit in the open air without a Fire Permit. Restrictions may be reimposed at a later date if changed weather conditions create a potentially dangerous fire situation.

All residents are requested to take care when lighting open fires and are reminded that legal liability for costs associated in fighting an uncontrolled fire lie with the person lighting the fire.

Before lighting an open fire, due attention must be given to weather conditions, adequacy of firebreaks, and the patrolling of fires until completely out, and it is requested that fires not be lit after dark.

Notes: 1. A permanent Restricted Fire Season remains in place for the Hill and

High Country of the District.

2. Property owners are reminded that for the Department of Conservation Estate and Fire Control Areas, fire control measures are in place all year and that organisation should be contacted for a Fire Permit prior to any burning.

3. No fires may be lit in residential areas without a Resource Consent from Environmental Canterbury.

Removing those unwanted and unsightly stainsu by Article supplied by www.consumer.org.nz

Some stains come at just the wrong time, late at night and you have run out of your favourite and often expensive commercial cleaner.

Here are a few tips on how to get rid of those unwanted stains with products you may well have in your cupboards, and if you don’t, pick them up next time you are at the supermarket.

Immediate response is the key to successful stain removal — keep these home remedies handy.

• Talcum powder — to soak up excess moisture

• An enzyme detergent — most laundry detergent powders contain enzymes

• Ammonia — you’ll find cloudy ammonia in supermarkets

• White vinegar • Chlorine bleach • Glycerine • An alcohol-based solvent such as meths

• A fat/oil solvent — turps, white spirits or kerosene

• A carpet spot cleaner for carpets or rugs

Common household stain removersBleach kills mildew and mould and

is good at removing coloured stains. Once the stain has gone, wash out the bleach thoroughly.

Downside: Strong bleach may fade or damage the item (chlorine bleach is particularly risky). Always dilute following

the label directions. Solvents remove stains by dissolving them. Nail polish remover works on lacquers and some paints and resins, as well as nail polish.

Methylated spirits (meths) is good on adhesive tape, PVA, latex and water-based paints, ballpoint ink, waxes, makeup, correction fluid and chocolate. White spirits (used in lighter

fluid), turpentine (turps), and kerosene can cope with fat or oil stains, tar and asphalt and some adhesives.

Tip: To remove sticky price labels or tape marks — try heating the sticker with a blow dryer or soaking it in hot water. Mild acids such as white vinegar, cream of tartar or lemon juice help remove rust and some food stains.

• Eucalyptus oil can remove some adhesive glues, fat, wax, gum, and tar.

• Lubricating agents such as glycerine or petroleum jelly help soften old stains.

• Washing agents weaken the bonds holding the stain so it can be washed away. Ammonia and borax are all-round cleaners.

• Enzyme-based laundry detergents, stain removers and soakers target protein-based stains, such as blood and egg-yolk.

Dealing with rural wasteA recent study commissioned by Environment Canterbury has found that while most farmers surveyed were aware of rural waste issues and showed a willingness to do the right thing, the majority still used traditional methods for the disposal of their waste.

people continue to do what they’ve always done in the past, and because the provision of rural waste services is generally poor.

“More than half of those surveyed felt there was definitely room for improvement in the way they managed their wastes. However they did feel it was not just their responsibility to improve things,” said Mr Taylor.

“They want to see a more collective and collaborative approach to dealing with rural waste, such as manufacturers having more accountability for taking back their products and for district councils and waste companies to improve their waste recovery operations outside urban centres. They also wanted more information on what recycling and disposal options are currently available to them.’’

Mr Taylor says most of the participants know about product stewardship schemes such as recycling silage wrap. However, many farmers are confused about how the schemes operate and also cited cost as a barrier to using these schemes.

The study focussed predominantly on non-natural wastes such as scrap metal, treated timber, agrichemicals, plastic wrap as well as demolition and domestic waste. Ninety two per cent of farmers were found to still be using traditional waste disposal methods including burying waste in farm pits, burning it or putting it in bulk store, all of which could potentially have an impact on natural resources including land, air and water.

Canterbury has nearly 9,000 farms covering approximately 2.8 million hectares. Before the study, little was known about the amount of waste generated by these Canterbury farming activities and how this waste is managed. The research shows that

of the 53 different farms surveyed, on average each produces around nine tonnes of non-natural rural waste a year.

An average of just under 24 tonnes of total waste is produced annually per farm, including non-natural, organic and domestic wastes.

Although farmers acknowledged that there has been some improvement in the management and disposal of non-natural rural waste in recent years, there is still room for improvement as much of this waste is being retained on farms.

Ken Taylor, Director Investigations and Monitoring, says the main reasons for continuing with traditional methods appear to be a behaviour legacy where

The next step is to focus on working together with the rural sector, industry and councils to improve waste minimisation through increased re-use, recycling, recovery and better disposal, he says.

“We know that farmers want to engage with councils and industry to help solve the problem. Collaboration between farmers, local and national government, as well as with industry, is the only meaningful way to provide effective, long-term solutions that work for everybody.”

“We want to be solution–focussed, helping to provide practical solutions to waste minimisation and disposal. We needed to know what the current situation was, so we can help find ways to manage it effectively. The trick is to be innovative and to look at the wider issues.’’

Wine estate story relevant for all primary producersOne of New Zealand’s most successful primary producers will share their ideas, learning and innovation at the Lincoln University Foundation’s South Island Farmer of the Year winner’s field day next month.

Peter Yealands, of Yealands Wine Group, won the prestigious title for the 2013 season and will host the field day at the Yealands Estate Winery near Seddon, Marlborough, on Thursday, February 13.

Lincoln University Foundation chairman Ben Todhunter said the informative programme planned for the field day will have practical relevance for farmers and other producers across the primary industries.

“This field day is not just about winemaking, it’s about the clever thinking, entrepreneurship, business strategies and people management that have gone into this business. Participants will get an insight into how

p The new winery at Yealands Wine Estate near Seddon

Yealands, during a period of only some five years, has become New Zealand’s sixth largest wine exporter, collecting along the way a fistful of industry awards for the wines and for such things as tourism, business achievement, environmental management and sustainability.”

Mr Todhunter said that Yealands justifiably won the Farmer of the Year title for the way they had looked at all aspects of their business, often finding better and more environmentally sustainable ways to do them.

“Whether someone is growing crops, wool or meat or producing milk there will be learning opportunities of real value

to their business at this field day. We encourage all farmers and people from allied primary industries to attend.”

When Texco Drilling Ltd installs your new well you can be assured of quality. To ensure this we provide down-hole camera footage at the end of each well. We use experienced operators, with casing joining undertaken by skilled and qualified welders, using formal weld procedures. Environmentally friendly products are also used in all situations where equipment engages or enters the ground (thread grease etc.)

We specialise in: •150mm and 200mm wells to 150 metres • Large diameter wells up to 1.2 diameter for efficient shallow wells • 250mm and 300mm wells to 60 metres • Galleries also installed with excavators up to 35 ton available

Well Development: We pride ourselves in leaving your well correctly screened and developed to its full potential with quality stainless steel wedge wire screens of the correct diameter and aperture size. Correct and full development has a positive impact on pump selection, protects your pump investment, and maximises the overall long-term economics of the well and pump installation.

Each well is unique and requires a different approach, something that we can discuss with you to reach a suitable and economic solution. Texco use primarily mechanical and air development methods depending on what is required in each situation.

Inspection, rehabilitation and repair of existing wells: With our comprehensive range of equipment and high resolution Down Hole Video Camera we can inspect and recommend further action on your existing well or indeed recognise if it has reached the end of its economic life. We can then discuss a solution with you for each case.

Well repair system: We also have a well repair system available to give you a viable option to fix a broken or non-complying well, rather than drilling a new one.

Test Pumping: This can be undertaken with measurements taken by Orifice Weir, V Notch Weir or electronic flow meter with data loggers and down hole measuring done by electronic pressure transducers. We have our own diesel generator if power is not available on site.

Keep it cool on country roadsRural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) is urging drivers to exercise patience when travelling into the countryside over the holiday period.

“Common sense can fly out the car window when families are faced with long, hot journeys on unfamiliar roads,” RWNZ National President Wendy McGowan says.

Rural roads present different conditions from the urban experience. Cars may take longer to stop and handle differently on gravel. Roads can be narrow, with steep faces either side and lack visibility around corners.

“If drivers keep patient and drive to the conditions, then everyone should get to their destinations safely,” Mrs McGowan said.

“Drivers should be on the lookout for other people on the road, even in remote places.

“They need to anticipate a tractor or a logging truck, a musterer driving a mob of sheep behind a team of dogs, or a child riding a horse. While there should be stock movement warning signs visible, sometimes these are missed.

“Some drivers think it’s OK to drive in the middle of a country road instead of keeping left, or drive faster or slower than they normally would.

“We say the same basic road safety rules apply everywhere. It is just as important to use rear view mirrors and indicators while in the rural environment, as it is on the urban motorway.”

Mrs McGowan said people get frustrated and impatient very quickly when drivers on narrow roads will not pull over because they assume no-one will be behind them.

She said driving on rural roads at night presents its own challenges.

“There’s no street lighting, wandering stock can loom out of the darkness unseen until too late and rocks and other debris may slide onto a rural road and cause an unexpected crash.”

Rural Women NZ also strongly urges drivers not to be mugs when it comes to consuming extra jugs of alcoholic drinks this summer. Automobile Association statistics show that many drink

Insecticides and bee healthu Article supplied by www.consumer.org.nz

Insecticides, and specifically a group known as neonicotinoids, are a popular target in debates about bee health.

Imidacloprid, the most widespread neonicotinoid, is licenced for use on 140 crops in 120 countries. In New Zealand, it’s applied to seeds such as grass, potatoes, maize and sweetcorn before they’re sowed.

Neonicotinoids work systemically to protect plants from within. Bees encounter these insecticides at trace levels in pollen and nectar. In these circumstances, the level of insecticide is ‘sub-lethal’, that is it won’t kill bees outright. But two high-profile studies have indicated that sub-lethal levels of neonicotinoids may still harm bumblebees and honey bees.

In the first study, UK researchers fed neonicotinoid-laced sugar water to bumblebee colonies. The affected bees produced fewer queens (which means fewer new colonies in the next generation).

The second study comes from France. Researchers there found the tested neonicotinoid befuddled foraging honey bees, making it harder for them to find their way back to the hive. In unfamiliar territory, 32 per cent of affected bees failed to make it home. Reaction to the studies was mixed.

Five neonicotinoids are approved for use here as pesticides or veterinary medicines. Two of them — imidacloprid and thiamethoxam — were at the centre of the English and French studies.

Peter Fisher from Bayer New Zealand says neonicotinoids are used primarily as a seed dressing on crops that aren’t attractive to bees.

“The highly targeted application reduces the amount used and minimises exposure to non-target organisms such as bees.”

Barry Foster, President of the National Beekeepers’ Association, says that further research into

the impact of insecticides (and fungicides) is necessary if we’re to get a good handle on the health of our bees.

“If we allow bee death-rates to reach levels found in other parts of the world, we’re essentially playing Russian roulette with some of the biggest industries on which this country relies.”
